Expression Syntax Behavior
May 9, 2007
I have a variable that I'm storing in a database. The variable is a server name "servernamepub". When I watch this variable in the locals it becomes "servername\pub". Is there something going on in the expression/variable syntax which is changing this?
Thanks,
Phil

Hello all,
I have a question concerning properties, variables, expressions, and their interactions within a for each loop. I'm still hammering out some details with the SSIS package I have been posting about recently, and I came across this bit of what may or may not be odd behavior (and it may only be odd because it's not doing what I expect).
I have a number of execute sql and script tasks inside a for each container. I am using one of the script tasks to flip a couple of variables on and off that I thought I could use to disable or enable later tasks during run time. What seems to be happening is that when I set disable on those tasks to true, I can no longer run them again in later iterations of the loop.
In other words: I can loop through it three times, with disable set to false via an expression - then the fourth iteration evaluates to true and disables the appropriate tasks, and then any later iterations no longer run any of the disabled tasks whether the expression evaluates true or false. Once disabled, they stay disabled, regardless of expression.
Is this a bug, or is there a "proper" way to do this? Am I foolish to assume that a "dynamic" run-time property is actually changeable with each iteration of a loop?

Hi,
This is a follow up to an earlier question. I'm having a heck of a time here. What I'm doing is reading a value into a SSIS variable and trying to evaluate it. I know the value is huge (over 4000 chars) and what I think should happen in my package isn't (I guess because this variable is so big).
What I WANTED to do is a straight character check:
@[User::xml_output] == "ABC"
but that wasn't working... so I deceided to try the len function.
However xml_output is too big and it's also not working. How would I check to see if the len is greater than 17 characters? Here is what I have so far...and none of it works.
len(trim(DT_WSTR,18,1252)@[User::xml_output])) > 17
len(trim(@[User::xml_output])) > 17
(DT_WSTR,18)@[User::xml_output] > 17
I just want to trim @[User::xml_output] and see if it's greater than 17 characters. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Phil

Hi,
I'm having some trouble with this syntax:
@[User::xml_output] != "<ROOT></ROOT>"
I have a variable that I KNOW is = '<ROOT></ROOT>' and I've set up a precendence constraint to only go to the next step if the above not true, correct?
Do I need to convert the right side of the equation to a string or something first? Does anybody know that syntax off hand?
Thanks,
Phil

Hi,
I would like to know how I can indicate a NULL value in a report expression in SSRS / Report Designer.
I am trying to code :
IIF(Value_A = 0, <NULL>, Value_A)
It may look weird but I am trying to return NULL values when Value_A is 0 (zero), in the sample scenario above.
I have tried using the keyword "NULL", but it is highlighted as a syntax error, and suggested to use System.DBNull. I tried it and then it says that components of the System collection cannot be used in an expression, so I am left drawing blanks.
Thanks.
regards,
Kenny

I'm getting the error listed above. To create this I used the wizard in VS2005 for the datagrid. The delete works but not the updating. I can't seem to find what's wrong. In the update parameters I've removed eventID and added it, neither works. Delete does work. Here's the code:

Chaps,
apologies for the drip-drip approach......
Is it possible to do pattern matching against a string using FINDSTRING or similar in a derived column expression without recourse to including 3rd party regexp style plugins?
I want to seach for a reference in a string which will have the format ANNNNNAAA ie. an alpha with a certain value followed by 5 digits followed by three alphas with specific values.
eg Z00001YYY or X00022HHH
thanks for your assistance,

Chris

Hi everyone,
I am a newbie to SSIS and looking for answer to a simple search/replace style question.
I am building a derived column and looking for some expression syntax that can search for several strings in one column and set a value in a new column.
A bit like a case statement:
CASE ProductLine
WHEN 'R1' THEN 'Road'
WHEN 'M1' THEN 'Mountain'
WHEN 'T1' THEN 'Touring'
WHEN 'S1' THEN 'Other sale items'
ELSE 'Not for sale'
END,
The twist is that 'R1','M1','T1','S1' could feature anywhere in the string that is ProductLine.
Thanks for all your help,
regards,
Chris

So if my Parameter value is...
MCCL, MCMA, MCPL, MCPR, MCRE, MCSE, MCSN, MCVA, MCCL, MCEP, MCMA, MCRE out of 43 possible choices,
What is the expression syntax to hide my tablix column based on my parameter value?
=iif(instr(Join(Parameters!ColumnVisibility.Value,","),"MCCL","MCMA","MCPL"...)>0,false,true)
Just not sure of the syntax...or do I have to qualify each one???
= IIf(Parameter!PF1.Value = "MCCL" OR Parameter!PF1.Value = "MCMA"..., TRUE, FALSE)

Hi guys,
I am looking for some syntax to help me with a traditional search/replace style requirement. I am wanting to examine the contents of one column and populate another.
similar to this SQL case statement
CASE ProductLine
WHEN 'R1' THEN 'Road'
WHEN 'M1' THEN 'Mountain'
WHEN 'T1' THEN 'Touring'
WHEN 'S2' THEN 'Other sale items'
ELSE 'Not for sale'
END,
the twist is that R1, M1 etc. can appear anywhere in the ProductLine column.
thanks for any assistance you can provide.

I have created 1 report with 2 datasets. This report is attached to the 1st dataset. For example,1st one is "Smallappliances", 2nd is "Largeappliances".
I created a tablix and, the 1st column extracts Total sales per Sales person between 2 dates from 1st dataset (Small appliances). I used running values expression and it works fine.
Now, I would like to add another column that extracts Total sales per sales person between 2 dates from 2nd dataset (Large appliances). I am aware that I need to use Lookup expression and it is giving me the single sales value rather than the total sales values. So, I wanted to use RunningValue expression within lookup table to get total sales for large appliances.
This is the lookup expression that I added for the 2nd column.
=Lookup(Fields!salesperson.Value,Fields!sales_person.Value,RunningValue(Fields!sales_amount.Value,
sum, " sales_person"),
"Largeappliances").
I get this error when I preview the report. An error occurred during local report processing. The definition of the report is invalid. An unexpected error occurred in report processing.

Forgive the noob question, but i'm still learning SQL everyday and was wondering which of the following is faster? I'm just gonna post parts of the SELECT statement that i've made changes to:
INNER JOIN Facilities f ON e.Facility = f.FacilityID AND f.Name = @FacilityName
OR
WHERE f.Name = @FacilityName
My question is whether or not the query runs faster if i put the condition within the JOIN line as opposed to putting in the WHERE line? Both ways seems to return the same results but the time difference between methods is staggering? Putting the condition within the JOIN line makes the query run about 3 times faster?
Again, forgive my lack of understanding, but could someone agree or disagree and give me the cliff-notes version of why or why not?
Thanks!

how can you convert it to sql syntax
I need to have a nested If statment which I can't do in sql (in sql I have to have select and from Together for example ( I can't do this in sql):
select ID, FName, LName
if(SUBSTRING(FirstName, 1, 4)= 'Mike')
Begin
Replace(FirstNam,'Mike','MikeTest')
if(SUBSTRING(LastName, 1, 4)= 'Kong')
Begin
Replace(LastNam,'Kong,'KongTest')
if(SUBSTRING(Address, 1, 4)= '1245')
Begin
.........
End
End
end
Case Statement might be the solution but i could not do it.
Your input will be appreciated
Thank you

This was originally posted on DBForums.com, so here is the link:
http://www.dbforums.com/showthread.php?t=1614086
Since some of the Microsoft staff come around here occasionally, I figured I should at least link to it here. This is the gist of the problem, though. I was asked to come up with a script to create all required data directories in case an emergency was declared, and someone had to rebuild one of our database servers. Most of you are probably thinking of hitting up the sysaltfiles table about now, but this will turn into a cautionary tale. Try it if you dare. The one requirement is that you install the data for SQL Server in a non-standard directory that has a short path (such as C:MSSQL8, instead of the whole C:Program files...).
What I am unclear on is whether this is a problem in the reverse function, the r(l)trim function, or the fixed-width datatype. I have confirmed that transferring the data to a temp table did not eliminate the...oddity.
select filename
from master..sysaltfiles
where dbid = 2
go
select reverse(rtrim(filename)), filename
from sysaltfiles
where dbid = 2
go
select reverse(rtrim(filename))
from sysaltfiles
where dbid = 2
I have also had two independent DBAs confirm this oddity exists, so this should be relatively easy to replicate.

I have three tables I am using, aspnet_Users, Stories,
CustomizedStory. Stories and
CustomizedStory are related via a foreign key StoryID. I’ve setup the tables so that when I delete a
Story row it cascade deletes the corresponding row from CustomizedStory.
Each CustomizedStory row has a reference to UserID from aspnet_Users.
Since, I didn’t want to mess with the table definition by adding a cascade
delete option on aspnet_Users, I decide to use a trigger, essentially delete all customized stories and associated stories if a user is deleted:ALTER
TRIGGER [dbo].[DeleteCustomizedStories] ON [dbo].[aspnet_Users] FOR DELETEAS
BEGIN DELETE FROM dbo.Story
WHERE StoryID
= (SELECT StoryID FROM dbo.CustomizedStory WHERE
UserID = (SELECT UserID FROM deleted))END
The problem I am having is that it deletes all of the
CustomizedStory rows as specified by the cascading option, but doesn’t delete
the Story rows. I can’t seem to understand
why this is happening, especially when I
explicitly told it to delete story rows.

Error message:InvalidCastExceptionI connect to the same source in both cases.Any one with an Idee ?

I'd like to understant the Percent Log Used behavior...
I monitored the Percent Log Used. For a specific database, it was 50 % used. I backup up the transaction log and the Percent Log Used was still 50 % used. For another database, the log was 60 % used. After the backup, it was 80 % used!!!!
Would you help me to understant this situation?
Thank you,
Fabio

Hi all,
I have a question regarding some very odd NT/SQL behavior that is exhibited when running a shell command through xp_cmdshell. If I do a 'net use z: servernamesharename' from the xp_cmdshell, it shows up in Explorer with the icon for a local drive! This would not be more than an ordinary M$ bug, except for the fact if go to a command line, I can't do a 'net use z: /delete' because it says that the network drive isn't there! Can someone shed some light on this?
Thanks,
Ed Molinari

Hi
I'm using MSSQL 2000 (with SP3) on Win2000.
Now, before installing the service pack I encountered with several strange bugs in the MSSQL mostly in queries that used TOP, gladly they were all fixed when installing the service pack... or so I thought...
So yesterday while trying to optimize a heavy query (7 joins - 2 of them are left joins from different tables crossed to the same table) I encountered yet again and with the latest service pack with an even stranger bug.
First the returned records are just not always the same, meaning, for example when I use TOP 465 in the SELECT statement, the last record which is 465 contains some value, when using TOP 466 the record before the last which is record 465 contains different value!... of course both with the same ORDER BY clause.
Also when I view the execution plan it's also not same in both cases, with TOP 465 it's one way (and much much faster) and with TOP 466 the plan is completely different and much slower...
Does anyone encountered with this phenomenon? Any suggestions?
BTW, don't pay too much attention to the number 465, in my case this is the border of the problem, after trying this query on different tables I found that each has it's own border that after it the TOP starts to freak out.
Thanks for the help!
Inon.

I've scheduled a job to run on a certain schedule, but the Last Run Status date comes back very oddly, a couple years out of synch, the other jobs scheduled report back just fine.
Anyone seen this behavior?

I have a SP that usually works fine (0-16 CPU time, 40 ms Duration), but from time to time the server hangs with apparently no reason. The SP has a lock timeout set to 500, so it should abort if a lock timeout error (1222) occurs but it doesn't. The Profiler reports very long execution time (over 30 sec), and because of that all other SP calls are blocked, 'cause the transaction opened by the first sp execution is not finished yet.
Any other attempts to identify other blocking queries did not show me anything suspect (sp_lock, dbcc opentran) other then the usual blocked chain. I'm starting to think about an IO bottleneck, or IO failure, that could block the disk access and cause the delay. The status of RAID 5 is healthy.
The server is used as storage system for a website (approx. 2000 concurrent users), and occasionally I noticed an ASP queue, but this strange behavior occurs even during the peak-off hours.
Any thoughts ?

I would like to ask for help. We had no problems with dynamic queries in SQL 2000, which were very fast. But when we ran the same queries in SQL 2005, it was many times slower lasting several seconds. I guess it has something to do with creating execution plan, because when I run it second time, it is suddenly extremely fast. But after just a little change (like adding space character), the speed is very slow again. If it is caused by execution plan in SQL 2005, is it somehow possible to change its settings so that it will behave like in sql 2000?
Thank you for answers!
