File Share

Feb 25, 2007

Can someone please tell me what is meant by a file share?

I'm doing a little reading on MS Sql Server and they talk about how
you can connect to the sql server through a named pipe.
I'm guessing that a file share means a specific service running on a
server. Is this correct?
The book says the following:
When you connect to a file share you use a Universal Naming Convention
path to a file server: \FILESERVERSharename.

To connect to a named pipe, you connect to a share of the form:
\COMPUTERpipesqlquery

Thanks Hope you can clear this up for me.

How To: Variable File Names When Exporting A Report To A File Share

Jan 19, 2007

I'm exporting reports daily to a file share and I need to rename the reports with a pseudo time stamp.

Example: I have a report named "Disk Usage" and when I export (using a data-driven subscription) I want to rename it "Disk Usage - (Jan07)" - or something to that effect.

Can anybody tell me how to accomplish this.

An Attempt To Attach An Auto-named Database For File (file Location).../Database.mdf Failed. A Database With The Same Name Exists, Or Specified File Cannot Be Opened, Or It Is Located On UNC Share.

Sep 2, 2007

Greetings, I have just arrived back into the country (NZ) and back into ASP.NET.
I am having trouble with the following:An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file (file location).../Database.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
It has only begun since i decided i wanted to use IIS, I realise VWD comes with its own localhost, but since it is only temporary, i wanted a permanent shortcut on my desktop to link to my intranet page.
Anyone have any ideas why i am getting the above error? have searched many places on the internet and not getting any closer.
Cheers ~ J

Flat File Connection - Network Share - SQL Agent - HELP!

Jun 19, 2007

SQL Agent will not successfully execute my package as a job. Bids executes the package correctly as well as when I run the package manually (right click, run package) through SQL Server Management Studio. This is a permissions issue with the flat file any help will be much appreciated. Background Information:OS: SQL 2005 on Windows Server 2003Flat File Connection: \servernamefolderfile.txt (If I change the flat file location to a local file the package will run as a job successfully)Domain: The package is running on a Windows machine that is not on any domain. The network location is a Windows machine on a domain.Security: The network location folder (\servernamefolderfile.txt) has no security, namely anyone can access any file to read/write/delete/etc. I can manually add and delete files as well as add and delete files when the package runs through BIDS or when I manually run it through management studio.Permissions: I have created a login, security credential, and proxy which I am using to run the package. The security credential is tied to the Administrator account on the local machine.

(note: I replaced the fileconnection strings with FILECONNECTION and the serverpath with "servernamefolder" for privacy reasons.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is some sort of security issue with SQL Agent. But, the error claims that the user is running as localmachineAdministrator. Isn't this how the package would run if I manually execute it?

Flustered... A Database With The Same Name Exists, Or Specified File Cannot Be Opened, Or It Is Located On UNC Share.

Dec 5, 2006

Hello everyone,

I have been playing with a Standard Version of VS 2005 and SSE 2005 and I just cannot get these two to interact together well. I am sure it is a noob problem but I have seen this error addressed on this forum and I am just not getting it. Here is exactly what I am doing.

I want to create a database within SSE using the Management Studio. Then, I want to connect to it with VS2005. Both SSE and VS2005 are local. I just cant seem to get this to work.

I always seem to get this error "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataSecond.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."

One thing... I create the website with Location: HTTP. I don't even know anymore why I do this.. I think because I like to be able to pull up a browser and get to my app. Other than that I am doing nothing special. However, I get the above error when I hit F5 to run the app inside VS2005.

Is there someplace where a complete noob can find a thorough and simple covering of this? Again, I have read through some of the previous posts on this and I don't understand too many of them and it seems as if there are at least 13 causes of which I don't know which one I have. Help!

Thanks.

SSIS Package Cannot Access Remote UNC File Via The Admin Share

Mar 6, 2008

I am developing a package to restore a database from backup file on a remote server. I am having problems accessing the remote backup file when it is addressed via the admin share, in this case N$. It runs okay if a specific share is created but for some unknown reason fails via the adminshare.

I am executing the package job with a proxy account that is a member of the local administrators group on the remote server.

It appears that access via a remote admin share isn't possible from within a SSIS package. Is this the case?

Transact SQL :: Bulk Insert When Data File Is On Network Share

Dec 3, 2015

I am running Microsoft SQL Server 2012 SP on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1 box. The SQL Server service is running as a simple windows domain user (nothing special, no admin rights, etc.) I am having some issues with using Bulk Insert when the data file is on a network share when using Windows Authentication. What is known is that the SQL Server service account has access to the network resource, which is shown by logging into SQL Server with a SQL account and doing the Bulk Insert. I also have rights to the files on the share, as shown by the fact that I put the files there. My SQL is in the form of:

Bulk Insert [table name] From '[server][share][filename]' With (FirstRow = 2, FormatFile='FormatFile.xml')

Now, when connecting to SQL Server with Windows Authentication and running the Bulk Insert I get the following error:

Msg 4861, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 Cannot bulk load because the file "[server][share][filename]" could not be opened. Operating system error code 5(Access is denied.).

I found this snip at

BULK INSERT (Transact-SQL)Security Account Delegation (Impersonation), which says, in part (emphasis mine):

To resolve this error [4861], use SQL Server Authentication and specify a SQL Server login that uses the security profile of the SQL Server process account, or configure Windows to enable security account delegation. For information about how to enable a user account to be trusted for delegation.

How to Configure the Server to be Trusted for Delegation, and we tried the unconstrained delegation and I rebooted the SQL server, but it still does not work. Later we tried constrained delegation and it still does not work.

I have verified the SPNs:

C:>setspn adsvc_sqlRegistered ServicePrincipalNames for CN=SVC_SQL,OU=Service Accounts,OU=Users,OU=ad domain,DC=ad,DC=local:        MSSQLSvc/SQLQA.ad.local:1433        MSSQLSvc/SQLDev.ad.local:1433        MSSQLSvc/SQLQA.ad.local        MSSQLSvc/SQLDev.ad.local
I have verified that my SQL connection is TCP and I am getting/using a Kerberos security token.
C:>sqlcmd -S tcp:SQLQA.ad.local,1433 -E1> Select dec.net_transport, dec.auth_scheme From sys.dm_exec_connections As dec Where session_id = @@Spid;2>
gonet_transport auth_scheme------------- -----------TCP KERBEROS(1 rows affected)1>

If I move the source file to a local drive (on the SQL server), all works fine, but I must be able to read from a file share?

Recovery :: AlwaysOn Cluster Reboot Due To File Share Witness Unavailability

Apr 23, 2015

Came across this scenario in AlwaysOn Availability Group (two node), file share witness times out and RHS terminate and cause the cluster node to reboot. File share witness is for continuous failover and if the resource is unavailable my expectation was that it should go offline and should not impact Server or Sql Server. But its rebooting the cluster node to rectify the issue.

Configuration
Windows Server 2012 R2 (VMs)
Sql Server 2012 SP2
Errors

A component on the server did not respond in a timely fashion. This caused the cluster resource 'File Share Witness' (resource type 'File Share Witness', DLL 'clusres2.dll') to exceed its time-out threshold. As part of cluster health detection, recovery actions will be taken. The cluster will try to automatically recover by terminating and restarting the Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS) process that is running this resource. Verify that the underlying infrastructure (such as storage, networking, or services) that are associated with the resource are functioning correctly.

The cluster Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS) process was terminated and will be restarted. This is typically associated with cluster health detection and recovery of a resource. Refer to the System event log to determine which resource and resource DLL is causing the issue.

SQL 2005 Maintenance Cleanup Task Is Not Deleting Files On Remote File Share

Jan 16, 2008

I have the following issue with Maintenance plan backups that work for BAK DIF and TRN to a remote server share.
When I try and remove the old files with a clean up task I get an error and the files don't get deleted.

The version is as follows
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3054.00 (X64) Mar 23 2007 18:41:50
Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition (64-bit) on
Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)

The error result is as follows,

Failed-1073548784) Executing the query "EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_delete_file
0,N'\\EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_delete_file 0,N'\ABCD-A1\BACKUPS\ABCD_BACKUP\ABC_DAILY\ABCD',N'trn',N'2008-01-13T12:52:49'" failed with the following error: "xp_delete_file() returned error 2, 'The
system cannot find the file specified.'". Possible failure reasons: Problems
with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set
correctly, or connection not established correctly.

The maintenance plan seems to be adding extra "" though when i enter the
code directly in a query i get same error.

Query:

EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_delete_file 0,N'\ABCD-A1BACKUPSABCD_BACKUPABC_DAILYABCD',N'trn',N'2008-01-13T12:52:49'

Error:

xp_delete_file() returned error 2, 'The system cannot find the file specified.'

The servers belong to the same domain and are using the same Service account which has all the necessary rights to the share and the file directory location. The backups work but i get the error on the cleanup task.

Trying to figure out how to get the Cleanup task to delete old files. The same happens for all file extensions and I have tried other locations with simpler file paths same error.

Scott

Allow you navigate in folders.

Where Do You Put A Share?

May 24, 2004

Environment:
Windows Server 2003.
2 node Cluster single instance of SQL Server 2K sp3a.
1 SAN.

Cluster groups are:
- Cluster group with its own default resources.
- Oracle group with its own resources.
- SQL Server group with its own resources (Server, services, disks,ip address....)
Disk v: is for SQL Server databases
Disk w: is for SQL Server logs
Disk x: is for SQL Server backups.

SO now I have to create a shared folder where the clients need to connect in order to launch the program (executable file *.exe) and maybe tomorrow I will also need to create others shared folders where to put others executable.
Questions:
1)Is it correct to create theses shared folders in the SQL Server group?
2) In wich one of the tree disks?
3) If I have 20 differents programs with differents security will I end up in having a SQL Server group with 20 different resources (file shares)?
Please advise.
Kind regards.

Backup To UNC Or Share?

May 24, 2004

Hi All,

Hopefully a painless and quick question to answer:

Am backing up the SQL2000 database(s) using the maintenance plan's under management in the Enterprise Manager.
All is fine however, we are running out of diskspace as the database grows, which is causing the backup to fail if I don't manually remove the nights before.

I have selected to delete old backup files however these files are deleted after the new file is generated and due to the lack of space the new one is not being generated....so in effect the older ones never get a chance to be deleted.

So I was wanting to know if it is at all possible to backup to a UNC path or share . I have tried however it raises an error saying it is not a valid path.

Any assistance here is hugly appreciated (asides from getting new disk - as this isn't a short term option at the moment)...

Cheers all
Troy

Backup To Network Share

Nov 27, 2005

I would like to backup my databases to a network share (NAS) instead of local disk using Maintenance Plans created by Enterprise Manager. I have successfully used a UNC path to target the destination network share but have not been to figure out how to submit a logon to the network share before the backup is executed.

The SQL Server instance is running in the context of the local system account.

Can I insert a step in the SQL SQL job that is created by the Maintenance Plans that changes the Windows account that the backup runs under? If yes what command syntax would I use in the inserted step or is there another way to accomplish that I'm attempting to do?

thanks

The database involves tables storing photo images and thumb impressions along with the textual data and other needed information in a single table. I have a application accessing and updating about 5 tables and reading most of the master tables. I need a strategy to design the database such that performance improves. Once the photo and thumb are inserted for a particular party it is not required for retrieval immediately at any circumstance. In this scenario how should I design the database and keep data volume in check. Can I archive photo and thumb impressions in CDs. Will it be reliable and feasible. Please clarify on this issue. Project In Share Point

Aug 27, 2007

Hello,

I have got a project where I am asked to utilize SharePoint features as much as possible. This project is earlier developed in .Net using Sharepoint Object Model. But now .Net should be eliminated as much as possible.

The requirements are :
Display a list of projects for the logged in user (windows logged in user). The list should have search criteria: project name, customer, project manager, project period.

On click of a project in the list, project details should be displayed Details like customer, team, start date, highlights, news. On click of a team member's name, Details of the team member (Name, office location, project joining, releaving dates, photo ) should be displayed.

To do this in Sharepoint my major hurdle is to display project list for windows logged in user. How do I do this in Sharepoint???

Expecting ideas/workarounds from all... Please be kind enough for that.

How To Share Read Only Data

Jun 15, 2007

Hi,

I'm new to replication. Can anyone help with the following?

I want to publish the specific rows of data that are created on the publisher without accepting changes to those rows from subscribers, but do accept new rows (and changes to those rows) from subscribers.

EG. publisher creates rows 1 and 2 which are published to the subscriber

subscriber creates rows 3 and 4 which are merged back to the publisher

subscriber's updates (or delets) to rows 1 and 2 are not merged back to the publisher

So basically I want the publisher created rows to be published but remain as is whilst allowing subscriber created rows to be merged back to the publisher.

Hope is makes sense.

Thanks in advance,
