SQL Server 2012 :: Returning Value For Foreign Key

Dec 5, 2013

I have a table tbl_rules. This table will define rules for each role. I have not yet defined the fields for the rules. But the table definition is as below:

Create table tbl_Rules
(
ID int identity(1,1) not null,
Role_ID int not null,
primary key (ID),
constraint fk_RoleName foreign key (Role_ID)
references tbl_Role(ID)
)

The table tbl_role has two columns as below:

ID RoleName
1 Manager
2 Analyst
3 Admin

So far so good. I created the tbl_rules.

But what i want to do is when I do select * from tbl_Rules, i want to show as below:

ID Role_ID
1 Manager
2 Admin

Instead it shows:

ID Role_ID
1 1
2 3

Is there a way to do this? The goal is to return the select * from tbl_Rules results to a gridview to enable adds and changes. I could do this by doing queries for each column, but I was hoping to make it easier. Not sure if this is even possible.

Foreign Key From Another Table In A Linked Server

Apr 19, 2008

Hi,

We're having a few linked servers in our company. some tables in one of the linked servers include columns (better saying, foreign keys) of tables in another server. I wonder if there's a way to create a foreign key referencing one column in another server. That is, suppose there's Column A in table A in Server A which references Column B in table B in server B, is there a way to create column A as foreign key referencing column B?

Any idea is appreciated.

SQL Server, Master Detail Without Foreign Keys

Mar 27, 2007

As part of a project, I'm not allowed to use foreign keys, well can't.   But I have a problem with this master detail relationship (and a very simple one too).
Tables to begin with:
Invoice:
invoiceid : bigint indentity autoincrement primarykey
Detail:
invoiceid: bigint  -  detailnumber:bigint  -  desc : char20
Okay - I want to set these two tables up such than when I create a new invoice, and subsequently get the new invoiceid, and I start to add detail records to the detail table, I want the detailnumber to autoincrement when I do an SQL Insert.  Right now I have detailnumber as the primary key, so when you view the detail records, it looks like:
(invoiceid, detailnumber, desc) 1,1,text - 1,2,text - 1,3,text - 2,4, text on another invoice - 3,5, text
I want it to work like:
(invoiceid, detailnumber, desc) 1,1,text - 1,2,text - 1,3,text - 2,1, text on another invoice - 3,1, text
where the invoiceid and the detail number make up the primary key.
I seem to recall you could do this is PHP before it had foreign keys & such, and I'm completely drawing a blank on this.  BTW - I'm using enterprise manager to set this up, but I can use QA with a sample script to acheive the same.
I realize this may be (and probably is) off-topic here, but I can't figure out where to ask.
Thanks in advance.

SQL Server Compact Edition/ Foreign Key Did Not Show

May 29, 2007

Hi,

I have tried to convert my SQL Server Express Database file to SQL Server Compact Edition database file and it successfully. But I have some problem with the FK, I could not see the FK symbol in my new SQL Server Compact Edition database file. So i tried another method to implement the FK which is this code of line here

ALTER TABLE EQMetaData ADD CONSTRAINT Reference FOREIGN KEY ([EQID]) REFERENCES Equipments ([ID])

The second method also has no error but I could not see any FK show. Does anyone has this problem? Any suggestion to solve it? Please do share with me.

Thanks,

Bombie

ps: I attached to sreen shots of my DB, 1 is (SQL Express DB) and another is SQL Compact DB.

SQL Server 2012 :: Efficient Way To Insert From Foreign Key Lookups

Feb 17, 2015

An SSIS task imports data from a flat file and inserts the data into a staging table. The staging table holds the data in its raw form. A second process then selects the data from the staging table, looking up the foreign key id's for raw data values, and then inserts the data into the live table.

SQL - Only key columns shown for clarity
-- Staging Table
CREATE TABLE Staging
(Information VARCHAR(10),
MachineName VARCHAR(10),
Status VARCHAR(10))

[code]...

The insert into the live table should look up the id for machine 1, and the id of status success and insert the foreign key values into the live table for the row. There could be 1000's of rows for the output of machine 1 all with different status's - (all pre set in the Status table, i.e success, failure, rerun) and the same for lots of other machines held in the machine table.

What is the best to insert this data all in one go, rather than reading each row of the staging table one by one, looking up the foreign key values depending on the machine and status values, then inserting the data.

I was thinking along the lines of:

INSERT INTO dbo.LiveTable
(Information, MachineID, StatusId)
SELECT Staging.Information, dbo.Machine.MachineId, dbo.Status.StatusId
FROM dbo.Staging
JOIN Machine ON Machine.MachineName = Staging.MachineName
JOIN STATUS ON Status.Status = Staging.Status But I notice the problem with this is, it doubles up the inserts!

SQL Server 2012 :: Insert Foreign Key Value Into Primary Table?

Oct 2, 2015

In a special request run, I need to update locker and lock tables in a sql server 2012 database, I have the following 2 table definitiions:

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Locker](
[lockerID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[schoolID] [int] NOT NULL,
[number] [varchar](10) NOT NULL,
[lockID] [int] NULL
CONSTRAINT [PK_Locker] PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED

[code]....

The locker table is the main table and the lock table is the secondary table. I need to add 500 new locker numbers that the user has given to me to place in the locker table and is uniquely defined by LockerID. I also need to add 500 new rows to the corresponding lock table that is uniquely defined in the lock table and identified by the lockid.

Since lockid is a key value in the lock table and is uniquely defined in the locker table, I would like to know how to update the lock table with the 500 new rows. I would then like to take value of lockid (from lock table for the 500 new rows that were created) and uniquely place those 500 lockids uniquely into the 500 rows that were created for the lock table.

I have sql that looks like the following so far:

declare @SchoolID int = 999
insert into test.dbo.Locker ( [schoolID], [number])
select distinct LKR.schoolID, A.lockerNumber
FROM [InputTable] A
JOIN test.dbo.School SCH ON A.schoolnumber = SCH.type and A.schoolnumber = @SchoolNumber
JOIN test.dbo.Locker LKR ON SCH.schoolID = LKR.schoolID
AND A.lockerNumber not in (select number from test.dbo.Locker where schoolID = @SchoolID)
order by LKR.schoolID, A.lockerNumber

I am not certain how to complete the rest of the task of placing lockerid uniquely into lock and locker tables?

DB Design :: Foreign Key Referencing Non Unique Field In Server

Oct 12, 2012

I ran into an interesting situation.  I'm working on contract and was looking at creating an ERD for an existing database when I ran into a problem.  I found FK's that are referencing columns that do not have a unique constraint or a unique index.

I don't know the history of the database but was there a time in SQL Server history where this would have been possible?  I scripted out the tables and created it in a test database.  When I run the script to create the FK I get the following message.

I double checked the original tables and this FK does exist in table1 and there is no unique anything in the referenced table, table2.  Currently the database is running on SQL Server 2008 Ent.

ALTER TABLE [dbo].[table1] WITH CHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_table1] FOREIGN KEY([Col1])
REFERENCES [dbo].[table2] ([col2])

There are no primary or candidate keys in the referenced table 'dbo.table2' that match the referencing column list in the foreign key 'FK_table1'.

SQL Server 2008 :: When Renaming A Table / It Doesn't Rename Foreign Key Constraints

Sep 21, 2015

I'm working on creating a new version of an existing table. I want to keep the old table around, only with a different name. In looking this up I found there's a system routine named sp_rename, which looks like it will work fine. However in thinking about this I realized that the foreign key constraints defined on the table (there's 3 of them) are likely to not be renamed, correct?

If I'm correct, then I suppose I could rename the table, then drop the 3 foreign key constraints, and create them new using different names for those foreign key constraints.

Transfer Sql Server Objects Task Truncate Table Fails Due To Foreign Key

Aug 10, 2006

Hi

We used to used Sql Server 2000 DTS to perform daily backups to remote servers very successfully but just cannot do the same with SSIS.

I set my Transfer Sql Transfer Objects Task to use the following settings:

CopyData = true

ObjectsTocopy = All Tables

As soon as it hits a table that has a foreign key, I get the following error:

"Truncate data failed for Table nnn"

I've tried setting DropObjectsFirst = True but this fails too with foreign key violations.

First of all, am I doing something obviously wrong? Is SSIS not smart enough to drop tables in the right order so that we don't get foreign key violations?

Am I totally barking up the wrong tree with this and can anyone suggest a better way of doing remote backups?

Kind regards

Ben

Ex: table 1: id int , language char(2), description varchar(100) PK = ID + language

table 2 : id int, idlanguage int PK = id FK (idLanguage refers to id from table 1)

This cause an error because the foreign key does not include all part of the primary key.
