I have some problems with the assignment from my professor.
Suppose there are two tables storing first names and last names, one table with column of first name and gender, the other with last name.
how to write stored procedures to get a random first name + random last name for Males or Female. like you got a list of all M & F first name and last name, then you try to match first name with any other last name (I believe this is random).
and the task is to write a script so each time when a female or male full name is need, it will return a random name for the requested gender.
I am totally struck and no idea how to deal with it, in fact I am just a beginning in SQL server, and I know there is a stored procedure to generate random number, however, I can't see the use of it here,,,,:eek:

I need to generate random strings each of length 7 characters and update it in a table that contains employee data.For example. There is table called as Employee. I need to generate a random 10 digit alphanumeric string that is also unique within a table. My application will be calling a stored procedure to insert this number into the table. This number will be associated with a id from another table. Is it better to generate the random number within sql (and perform the lookup at the same time), then just pass the number back to the calling application ?
If the calling application generates the number, it will also need to make a call to check if its unique. So im thinking it would be best to simply have sql generate this random number, check the number against the table and then insert the new record.

I have a field call: password, I want to generates some random chars as
default password for users (so user got something to login, and update
later).
Current Solution I have:
I made myself a trigger and it does generate password on insert, but
the problem with that is I have to allow NULL on that field. I
don't want NULL to be allowed, and if I don't allow null... sql server
won't allow me to insert a record (when leaving password field empty).
Reason i don't wanna allow NULL on that field, is because there may be
more applicaions using the same field from the same database.
Just in case if the other developer gets sloopy, I don't want other
application(s) allow user put to enter a null or leave it blank on my
password field.
My question is:
1) can I put a function or some sort at the "Default" field under "Design Table", if so...how?
2) any suggestions for a better implementation?
3) if (1) doesn't work, what other options would you suggest other then the current trigger i'm using?

I need to select a random record from TABLE. It might look easy with using RAND() function, but the tricky part is that ID's which are the PRIMARY KEY, were assigned as a random number.
So right now ID's in that TABLE look some thing like that: -18745, 45809, 129, -5890023, 487910943, -209, etc...

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to generate a single record that shows the status of an accounting period for multiple groups. For a single accounting period they could all be the same, or all be different (open, closed, hold, etc)
What I want to do is select the accounting period with a group by that says if all the groups are in the same status, then that's the status. But if there are different status' for the period, I just want to have a single line that says 'Mixed' The query below returns 3 records, but I only want 2. I tried a CASE WHEN Having COUNT > 1 but it blew up with an aggregate subquery in a group by error.

Then through Database Explorer I created a table named "info"Then while configuring the SqlDataSource control I used the SQL Authentication mode and attached the "testdb.mdf" database file.Test Connection showed success. But when I hit the Ok button of the wizard it displayed the following error message:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance.While configuring the SqlDataSource control I clicked "New Connection". Under Data Source section I tried both Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft SQL Server Database File. And in both the cases I attached a databese file(testdb.mdf). Sorry for the less then descriptive post title but I didn't find a better way to describe it. I'm developing an app in the express editions of VB and SQLserver. The application is a task/resource scheduler. The main form will have a datepicker or weekly overview and show all tasks scheduled per day. The problem is, I've got one or more people assigned to tasks and I wonder what's the best way to design this. Personally, I'd go for one Task table, a People table and a table that provides a link between them (several record per task, one for each person assigned linking TaskID and PplID). However, I don't see a nice way of showing this data to the end user, allowing him to edit/add etc on ONE screen.
To fix that the only way I see is just add columns to the Task table for every person with select boxes. This way everything can be done on one simple screen. This obviously does present some future issues.
On top of this, which people are available on a day varies and there should be an option to allow a user to set who is available on a specific day. Which would lead me to my first idea and add another table that would provide this. but then I'm having design issues again for the form.
I'm kinda stuck atm, can anyone shed some light on this. I'm sure there is an elegant way of doing this but I'm failing at finding it.

We're running a Sage CRM install with a SQL Server 2000 database at the back end. We're using the Sage web services API for updating data and a JDBC connection to retrieve data as it's so much quicker.
If I retrieve a record using the JDBC connection and then try and update the same record through the web services, the query times out as if the record is locked for updates. Has anyone experienced anything similar or know what I'm doing wrong? If I just use DriverManager.getConnection() to establish the connection instead of the datasource, and then continue with the same code I don't get these record locking problems. Please find more details below.

The JDBC provider for the datasource is a WebSphere embedded ConnectJDBC for SQL Server DataSource, using an implementation type of 'connection pool datasource'. We are using a container managed J2C authentication alias for logging on.
This is running on a Websphere Application Server v6.1.

I would like to link the two tables and receive all records from table2 joined on ID and the record from table1 that has the most recent date.
Example:

The first record in table2 would only link to the first record in table1
