I just want a simple datareader, that i can read the value returned from a select statement executed on a SQL server 2005 db.
The code below should work in, but email[calc]= rdr[0].ToString(); when i want to read some data a get a exception saying:
System.InvalidOperationException was unhandled by user code
Message="Invalid attempt to read when no data is present."
  Source="System.Data"

SQL Server 2012 :: Create Dynamic Update Statement Based On Return Values In Select Statement

Jan 9, 2015

Ok I have a query "SELECT ColumnNames FROM tbl1" let's say the values returned are "age, sex, race".

Now I want to be able to create an "update" statement like "UPATE tbl2 SET Col2 = age + sex + race" dynamically and execute this UPDATE statement. So, if the next select statement returns "age, sex, race, gender" then the script should create "UPDATE tbl2 SET Col2 = age + sex + race + gender" and execute it.

Using A Datareader In A SQL Helper Select Query

Jan 28, 2005

Hi,

I am trying to retrieve a value from a SQL Server table based on the results of a datareader. This is the string i am trying to create

Me.ViewState("Make") = SqlHelper.ExecuteScalar(MyConnectionString, "usp_GetMake", (dr("MakeID")).To String)

Im not sure of the syntax as I know that it is basically using two different ways of reading a database. Is there an equivalent for the datreader which can be used with SQL Helper?

Thank you for your help

Select Case Does Not Evaluate The Value Returned By Datareader Or Dataset

Sep 13, 2006

I am working on a company sign out sheet for our Intranet. The application accesses a sql database.  I tried using a datareader as well as a dataset to access a small piece of information regarding the group that each employee belongs to in the company.  My last attempt was to assign the value to the text property of a text box and evaluate the text from the text box with the Select Case but that did not work either. The application is supposed to generate an email to our receptionist as well as to the group technical assistant responsible for each group according to the value that is passed into the Select Case statement.  With the datareader as well as the dataset and even now with creating a text box and accessing the text property, I was able to assign the group value to a variable (I can see the value in the subject of the email), but when the variable is supposed to be evaluated by the select case statement it skips right through all of the cases to case else and uses only the receptionist's address in the email as if it doesn't even see the value of the variable.   I have searched for a possible answer to the problem I am but so far have had no luck.  Any ideas?   I included the part of the code that I am having trouble with: '********************************************************************************************' New DataSet is created to determine the group the employee belongs to so that the appropriate' group technical assistant is emailed when employee signs out'******************************************************************************************** ' declare variablesDim sqlGroup As String ' string variable to store sql statement for datasetDim BLGroup As String ' string variable to store the bl group of the employeeDim emailAddress As String ' string variable to store resulting email address Dim groupDS As DataSet ' dataset variableDim groupAdapter As SqlDataAdapter ' sql data adapter variable' sql statement to access group value from the databasesqlGroup = "SELECT BLGroup FROM BLGroupsView WHERE (RTRIM(fname) + ' ' + LTRIM(lname)='" & employee & "')" ' repopen the connection (leftover from working with the datareader)Connection.Open()' create new SqlDataAdapter applying sql statement and connectiongroupAdapter = New SqlDataAdapter(sqlGroup, Connection)' create new dataset groupDS = New DataSet()' populate the datasetgroupAdapter.Fill(groupDS, "BLGroupsView") ' get the value stored in the BLGroup column (only one row is returned at a time) BLGroup = groupDS!BLGroup' Create GroupTextBox TextBox control.Dim GroupTextBox As New TextBox()' Set options for the UserTextBox TextBox control.GroupTextBox.ID = "GroupTextBox"GroupTextBox.Visible = "False"GroupTextBox.Text = BLGroup' just trying anything with this next line, even when i didn't set this the select case statement did not seem to see the value returned by the variableGroupTextBox.runat = "server"  ' use a select case statement to evaluate the value of the group (didn't work when I passed in the BLGroup variable eitherSelect Case GroupTextBox.TextCase "bh"emailAddress = "receptionist@myaddress.com; bhassistant@myaddress.com"Case "env"emailAddress = "receptionist@myaddress.com; envassistant@myaddress.com"Case "sw"emailAddress = "receptionist@myaddress.com; swassistant@myaddress.com"Case "fac"emailAddress = "receptionist@myaddress.com; facassistant@myaddress.com"Case "www"emailAddress = "receptionist@myaddress.com; wwwassistant@myaddress.com"Case ElseemailAddress = "receptionist@myaddress.com"End Select '*************************************************************************************************' set new message objectDim myMessage As System.Web.Mail.MailMessage = New System.Web.Mail.MailMessage()'**********************************************************' set message properties'********************************************************** myMessage. From = "me@myaddress.com"myMessage.To = emailAddressmyMessage.Subject = employee & " Signing Out at " & TimeOut.Text & " " & BLGroupmyMessage.Body = employee & " Signing Out at " & TimeOut.Text & " for " & Destination.Text & " will potentially return at " & EstTimeIn.Text'***********************************************************' set smtp server namesmtpMail.SmtpServer = "mailserver1"' send email using smtpsmtpMail.Send(myMessage) It sends the message and returns the BLGroup value everytime but only sends to the receptionist.  Thanks for your time!

Select Statement Works In 2000 But Not In 2005

Jan 2, 2008

I hope this is a easy one. We are trying to find a fix for a select statement that works in 2000 but not in 2005 with a simple select statement.

The easiest statement that will duplicate the error is:

TestTable has 3 columns: Primary, strTest, strTest2

SELECT strTest, strTest AS Name
FROM TestTable
ORDER BY strTest2

If you sort by the Primary column you will not receive an error.

How can you select the same column twice and then sort in the SQL statement?

Select And UPDATE Statement Help! (Using SQL Server)

May 7, 2007

I have a table which I need to obtain data from but am having a problem with select statement.
Specifically, I have a table that has multiple records for a particular hostName where the name of the host is either a shortname (say "Larry") or a long name (say "Larry's").
I need to display only the long names (NOT THE SHORT NAME records with the similar hostName).
Select winsHostName, len(winsHostName) from winsData where winsClientIPAddress IN                     (SELECT winsClientIPAddress                      from winsData                     Group By winsClientIPAddress                     Having count(winsClientIpAddress) > 1)                     Order by winsHostName
   Which returns data
                    Name               Length
                    ATVDDR          6                   ATVDDR1         7
This is a s far as I can get but,
Now, I need to list all remaining table fields based on the Name with the longer length and this is where I run into trouble.
The output should read per below with the remaining table fields which I cannot seem to extract with nested select statement
                            Name              IP Addr     Location
                            ATVDDR1       1.1.1.1     2ndFloor
I tried adding another GROUP BY by this gets me no where because I do not need to execute another aggregate in select statement. Maybe I need to use INNER JOIN
 Please advise any assistance.

Multiple Tables Used In Select Statement Makes My Update Statement Not Work?

Aug 29, 2006

I am currently having this problem with gridview and detailview. When I drag either onto the page and set my select statement to pick from one table and then update that data through the gridview (lets say), the update works perfectly.  My problem is that the table I am pulling data from is mainly foreign keys.  So in order to hide the number values of the foreign keys, I select the string value columns from the tables that contain the primary keys.  I then use INNER JOIN in my SELECT so that I only get the data that pertains to the user I am looking to list and edit.  I run the "test query" and everything I need shows up as I want it.  I then go back to the gridview and change the fields which are foreign keys to templates.  When I edit the templates I bind the field that contains the string value of the given foreign key to the template.  This works great, because now the user will see string representation instead of the ID numbers that coinside with the string value.  So I run my webpage and everything show up as I want it to, all the data is correct and I get no errors.  I then click edit (as I have checked the "enable editing" box) and the gridview changes to edit mode.  I make my changes and then select "update."  When the page refreshes, and the gridview returns, the data is not updated and the original data is shown. I am sorry for so much typing, but I want to be as clear as possible with what I am doing.  The only thing I can see being the issue is that when I setup my SELECT and FROM to contain fields from multiple tables, the UPDATE then does not work.  When I remove all of my JOIN's and go back to foreign keys and one table the update works again.  Below is what I have for my SQL statements:------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SELECT:SELECT People.FirstName, People.LastName, People.FullName, People.PropertyID, People.InviteTypeID, People.RSVP, People.Wheelchair, Property.[House/Day Hab], InviteType.InviteTypeName FROM (InviteType INNER JOIN (Property INNER JOIN People ON Property.PropertyID = People.PropertyID) ON InviteType.InviteTypeID = People.InviteTypeID) WHERE (People.PersonID = ?)UPDATE:UPDATE [People] SET [FirstName] = ?, [LastName] = ?, [FullName] = ?, [PropertyID] = ?, [InviteTypeID] = ?, [RSVP] = ?, [Wheelchair] = ? WHERE [PersonID] = ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The only fields I want to update are in [People].  My WHERE is based on a control that I use to select a person from a drop down list.  If I run the test query for the update while setting up my data source the query will update the record in the database.  It is when I try to make the update from the gridview that the data is not changed.  If anything is not clear please let me know and I will clarify as much as I can.  This is my first project using ASP and working with databases so I am completely learning as I go.  I took some database courses in college but I have never interacted with them with a web based front end.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.Thank you in advance for any time, help, and/or advice you can give.Brian

TSQL - Use ORDER BY Statement Without Insertin The Field Name Into The SELECT Statement

Hi guys,
I have the query below (running okay):

Code Block
SELECT DISTINCT Field01 AS 'Field01', Field02 AS 'Field02'
FROM myTables
WHERE Conditions are true
ORDER BY Field01

The results are just as I need:

Field01 Field02

------------- ----------------------

192473 8461760

192474 22810

Because other reasons. I need to modify that query to:

Code Block
SELECT DISTINCT Field01 AS 'Field01', Field02 AS 'Field02'
INTO AuxiliaryTable
FROM myTables
WHERE Conditions are true
ORDER BY Field01
SELECT DISTINCT [Field02] FROM AuxTable
The the results are:

Field02

----------------------

22810
8461760

And what I need is (without showing any other field):

Field02

----------------------

8461760
22810

Is there any good suggestion?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Aldo.

SQL Server 2012 :: Stored Procedure Argument For Select Where Value IN Statement

The result when I execute this from within Management Studio is a single column of 1 to n rows. I want to use these values in another stored procedure like this:

Select @userCount = COUNT(*) from permissions where UserID = @userID and
(projectid = @projectID or projectid=0) and
clientid = @clientID and
folderpermissions in (dbo.sp_FoldersOfFile(@fileID))

The Stored Procedure compiles but it does not query the folderpermissions in the selected values from the sp_FoldersOfFile procedure. I'm sure it is a syntax issue.

SELECT Statement Works In SQL Server Management Studio But Not In SSRS

Mar 14, 2008

Hi,

I'm attempting to extract some yearly average figures from our DB. I've written a SELECT statement in SQL Server MS which returns exactly what I need:

SELECT YEAR, CAllSource, AVG(CallTotal) AS [Average calls per day]

FROM (SELECT COUNT(CallID) AS CallTotal, DATEPART(YEAR, Recvddate) AS Year, CASE WHEN CallSource IN ('Auto Ticket', 'Email')

THEN 'Email' WHEN CallSource IN ('Phone') THEN 'Phone' ELSE 'Other' END AS CallSource

FROM Calllog where

DATEPART(MONTH, Recvddate) = 3

AND DATEPART(dw, RecvdDate) NOT IN ('7', '1')

GROUP BY RecvdDATE, callsource) as sub

GROUP BY YEAR, CallSource

ORDER BY YEAR, CallSource

The problem is that when I attempt to use this in SSRS I get the following error:

"sub.Year is not a recognised DATEPART Option".

Now as you can see, "sub.Year" is not even mentioned in the expression. However I noticed that when running the query, SSRS automatically adds "sub." before the YEAR in the section highlighted in yellow above. a) Why is it doing this, and b) does anyone know of a workaround/fix?

Thanks
Matt

SQL Server 2012 :: Stored Procedure - How To Join Another Table Into Select Statement

Jan 7, 2014

I have a stored procedure that I have written that manipulates date fields in order to produce certain reports. I would like to add a column in the dataset that will be a join from another table (the table name is Periods).

The structure of the periods table is as follows:

[ID] [int] NOT NULL,
[Period] [int] NULL,
[Quarter] [int] NULL,
[Year] [int] NULL,
[PeriodStarts] [date] NULL,
[PeriodEnds] [date] NULL

The stored procedure is currently:

USE [International_Forecast_New]
GO
/****** Object: StoredProcedure [dbo].[GetOpenResult] Script Date: 01/07/2014 11:41:35 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO

[Code] ....

What I need is to add the period, quarter and year to the dataset based on the "Store_Open" value.

For example Period 2 looks like this
Period Quarter Year Period Start Period End
2 1 20142014-01-27 2014-02-23

So if the store_open value is 02/05/2014, it would populate Period 2, Quarter 1, Year 2014.

SQL Server 2012 :: Insert Multiple Rows In A Table With A Single Select Statement?

Feb 12, 2014

I have created a trigger that is set off every time a new item has been added to TableA.The trigger then inserts 4 rows into TableB that contains two columns (item, task type).

Each row will have the same item, but with a different task type.ie.

TableA.item, 'Planning'
TableA.item, 'Design'
TableA.item, 'Program'
TableA.item, 'Production'

How can I do this with tSQL using a single select statement?

SQL Server 2014 :: Select Statement Returning Too Many Rows For Backup Start Date

Jun 3, 2015

Here's my statement below. What I'm trying to get is joining the name column in master.sys.databases with a sub query for the database name, file location and backup start date from the MSDB database. The reason for this, if a new database has never been backed up, It should be returning as a NULL value, which is my goal. However, I'm getting multiple results for the backups.

select CONVERT(CHAR(100), SERVERPROPERTY('Servername')) AS Server,a.name,File_Location=b.physical_device_name,backup_start_date=max(backup_start_date)
from master.sys.databases a
left join(select c.database_name,backup_start_date=max(backup_start_date),b.physical_device_name
from msdb.dbo.backupmediafamily b join msdb.dbo.backupset c on c.media_set_id=c.backup_set_id
where c.type='D'

[Code] .....
