Getting English Column Names Into A German Database
Jul 23, 2005
I'm currently implementing a German ERP system and I'm having a
terrible time writing reports/SQL statements. The database is MS SQL
Server 2000. I want to set permanant aliases for the columns that I
can use in SQL statements. Is this even possible? All of the research
I've done implies that you can only alias column names in the output of
a SQL statement.

I have developed a tool to allow project developers to easily re-create the entire schema for our base product. The current issue involves setting the correct collation for the customers' region. Our brother company in Germany uses the same db creation tool and scripts, and we here in the US also have customers in South America. My ultimate question is "what subset of collation names would be necessary to provide the project developer?" I could query the database to get all the collation names, but I think it was around 1000 names. Can I query to get a smaller subset of the most relevant collation names?

I'm not a full-time DBA, so excuse my style of expressing my question.I have a database which has 2 tables in SQL 2005. Both these tables have similar column names, EXCEPT for new extra columns in FY2007_DATA. I can visually see the difference in columns in Database Diagrams. My goal is to :- I want to compare FY2007 tbl column names to FY2006 column names and display only those columns as results that do not match.Tbl 1 :- FY2006_DATA Tbl 2:-
FY2007_DATA
With online reading and help I have managed to get this script to do exactly opposite of what i want. Below is the query
/* This query compares the column names from two tables and displays the ones that have an exact match. It does not care for case-sensitiveness */
Select a.Table_Name, a.Column_Name, (b.Table_Name), (b.column_name)
From [2006-2011].INFORMATION_SCHEMA.Columns AS a
Join [2006-2011].INFORMATION_SCHEMA.Columns AS b on a.Column_Name = b.Column_Name
Where a.TABLE_NAME = 'FY2006_DATA'
And b.TABLE_NAME = 'FY2007_DATA'
AND a.Column_Name IN
(Select Column_Name = LEFT(c.column_name, 20) FROM
[H1B_2006-2011].INFORMATION_SCHEMA.Columns AS c WHERE c.TABLE_NAME = 'FY2007_DATA' )
When I change "AND a.Column_Name IN.." to "AND a.Column_Name NOT IN.." so that the results will (should) display the extra columns in FY2007, in fact I do not see any results, but query executes perfect.
How can I achieve my goal.?
Thank you

I have a problem inserting German special chracters into a MSSql table.
üöäÖ works fine, but ßÜÄ are reduced to "_". I'm using a html form and a php script to enter the data into the database. Any idea why this isn't working? Funny thing is, when I use a german version of the SQL Server it also works without a problem... but I need this to work on ANY mssql server. Any help would be very much appreciated.

hi all,
i need to know how to enable my database that is stored on SQLServer 2005 to be able to store German characters, because as you know that when it finds a unique character that is not supported by the Collation language it puts instead a "?" character.
so i need to know the correct Collation item that is equivelant to the German language or if there is any extra download or package i should get to make it work.
Thank you very much.

At my work, we are upgrading a number of MS Access 2000 databases to SQL Server 2000. Many of the columns have names that do not follow the rules for Identifiers. For example there are columns with a numeric names 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. There are also columns with a hyphen in the name and columns that begin with a number and not an underscore or an alpha character. Plus there are columns with names like first, last, position, etc. (There was also columns with reserved words used as the names. I have changed those column names in the databases that I have already converted) Will leaving these names alone create a problem? The database serves as the backend to ASP pages.

All,
I've a VB6 application that writes data to a SQL Server database using ADODB in the VB6 code. My market has been the United States. My application is written for the English language.
I've a new user in Germany. Unfortunately, every number that contains a decimal is now stored in the SQL Server database with the decimal dropped. For example, 29.15 gets stored as 2915. I've done some searching and found the culprit is probably the OS Regional Language setting. The Germany user is using German. So it seems ADODB is expressing "29.15" as "29,15", and SQL Server is having a fit when ADODB is trying to write to the database.
My client is reluctant to changing all their user profile language settings to German (or the other option, changing their German language setting decimal symbol option to "."). They fear other applications may be affected.
Can anyone suggest a solution on my software end? Does ADODB have some options of which I'm unaware that will ignore the regional language setting and express decimal-containing numbers simply as "."? Or is there a setting in SQL Server to compensate?
I appreciate all and any help. Thanx!

Hello,I'm still extremely novice to SQL and I've tried googling how to produce this result but I've been encountering a lot dynamic sql commands which isn't exactly what I want. If this is an ignorant question I do apologize but heres my scenario: I have a table with columns of the day, for instance: Monday_hasData (bit)Monday_DataAnd what I want to do is essentially pass in "Monday" as a parameter and rather than doing an If statement on each row, I would like to just like to do something like assign @dayCheck + "_hasData" to a variable and then use @dayCheck as part of my query. Is this possible or am I going to have to have 7 cases? Thank you for any input,Chance

Hi,
I have a table in which out of 20 columns, there will be data only in a few columns. So, I need to find those column names which have data in them. I was able to do it using the information_schema and using a cursor to loop through all the column names and find out which columns have data in them. But i need to know if there is a more efficient way of doing this without using the cursor. Can somebody please let me know how this can be done without using a cursor? Thank you.

Is there a way that you could get the column names for each table in a database using 1 query?
something like:
tbl colname
t1 catID
t1 catName
t2 prodID
t2 prodDesc
t3 cartID
...
...
I know it would be long, but I would just be searching through the saved output for specific names.

Hi All,
I was wondering how would I get the column names from a table? Not the results just a listing of column names. What is the command to get this information? I am using MS Access, but I posted here because MS SQL is the closest thing on this forum and the syntax is usually similar.
Thanks a bunch.

SQL server throws an exception when I try to run the following code:
ALTER TABLE contacts ADD default ntext NULL;
The reason for that is that "default" is an SQL keyword.
The way I handle this now is I put an underscore at the front:
ALTER TABLE contacts ADD _default ntext NULL
Is there a cleaner way to handle this, i.e. to keep the column name "default" and forse sql server to create a column with this name?
Thank you!

I figured the best way to do this would be using sql-dmo (Sql Server 2000)
Does anyone have any suggestions on getting started with this project?

It works fine except without column names of table. Does any one have idea that can bring out column names from table?
Thanks
