Grouping On Date Without Time
Apr 5, 2007
Hello,
I have the following problem.
I a making reports based on a database that i do not control.
In that database i have a table with statistical data including a field with datetime informtion.
The format of the data I receive is "5/04/2007 7:43:27".
In my report i want to create a group which groups my event by date : "05/04/2007"
In my output i always get subgroups by date & time so "5/04/2007 7:43:27", "5/04/2007 7:43:28", ....
How can i group only on the date.

I'm adding up quantities of an item that are entered in one after another, so the date is the same, but the time differs.
I used the "first" function in access which works the way I want, but sql7 doesn't use the same function. The "convert" function does not work in access but Here is the gist of the query:
SELECT first(CONVERT(varchar,transactions.tran_date,101)) AS [trandate], transactions.tran_type,
SUM(transactions.qty) AS totqty,...etc.
thanx,

This is driving me nuts..
I'm trying to extract some data from a table in oracle. The oracle table stores date and time seperately in 2 different columns. I need to merge these two columns and import to sql server database.
I'm struggling with this for a quite a while and I'm not able to get it working.
I tried the oracle query something like this,
SELECT
(TO_CHAR(ASOFDATE,'YYYYMMDD')||' '||TO_CHAR(ASOFTIME,'HH24:MM : SS')||':000') AS ASOFDATE
FROM TBLA
this gives me an output of 20070511 23:06:30:000
the space in MM : SS is intentional here, since without that space it appread as smiley
I'm trying to map this to datetime field in sql server 2005. It keeps failing with this error
The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data
I'm struck with error for hours now. Any pointers would be helpful.
Thanks

I'm looking for a way of taking a query which returns a set of date time fields (probable maximum of 20 rows) and looping through each value to see if it exists in a separate table.
E.g.
Query 1
Select ID, Person, ProposedEvent, DayField, TimeField
from MyOptions
where person = 'me'
Table
Select Person, ExistingEvent, DayField, TimeField
from MyTimetable
where person ='me'
Loop through Query 1 and if it finds ANY matching Dayfield AND Timefield in Query/Table 2, return the ProposedEvent (just as a message, the loop could stop there), if no match a message saying all is fine can proceed to process form blah blah.
I'm essentially wanting somebody to select a bunch of events in a form, query 1 then finds all the days and times those events happen and check that none of them exist in the MyTimetable table.

Hi Guys,
I want to group the records on the time difference
declare @tbl as table(id int,intid int,val int,dt datetime)
insert into @tbl
select 1,1,10,'03/31/2006 15:05:22' union all
select 2,1,12,'03/31/2006 15:10:22' union all
select 3,1,15,'03/31/2006 15:15:22' union all
select 4,1,12,'03/31/2006 15:25:22' union all
select 5,1,8,'03/31/2006 15:30:22' union all
select 6,1,6,'03/31/2006 15:35:22' union all
select 7,1,4,'03/31/2006 15:40:22' union all
select 8,1,3,'03/31/2006 15:45:22' union all
select 9,1,10,'03/31/2006 15:50:22'
declare @tbl1 as table(intid int,Tm int,val int)
insert into @tbl1
select 1,5,10
I want a output such that when the val in @tbl goes below the val in @tbl1 for the Tm mentioned in @tbl1
then the time difference should be shown. For example record 1 it starts with 10 the records remain more than 10 till
record number 5.From 5 the records remains lower than 10 till record number 9.So I need to show the the time
difference from record number 5 till 9.
But there is a catch. In @tbl1 there is column named Tm.The time difference sould be calculated only if the diff
more than Tm value in @tbl1.
For example if the value of Tm is changed to say 25 then the there is no need to show the time difference since the
time difference value from record 5 to record 9 is less than 25.
Hope I am clear.
Please help me out.

In SQL Server 2005, I want to do a set query on the following data that results in 3 groups:
Id
EventName
EventTime
1
First
41:40.2
2
First
41:41.6
3
First
41:43.1
4
First
41:44.4
5
Second
41:46.4
6
Second
41:48.3
7
Second
41:49.7
8
First
41:51.2
9
First
41:53.3
10
First
41:55.0
So, I want to have a query that returns one aggregate row for each of rows 1-4, 5-7 and 8-10 based on the EventName. Every time EventName 'changes' in the order that I sort it, I want to start a new grouping:
Group
EventName
Count
1
First
4
2
Second
3
3
First
3
With this query, I could also get the Min() and Max() EventTime for each group, etc.
However, this is proving difficult to do in set SQL. Obviously, if I group on EventName, then rows 1-4 *and* 8-10 will be rolled into my 'First' group. However, there is no other partitioning information that I can factor in that splits this data into *only* 3 groups, based on the order of the Event Time.
I have tried the various ranking functions, but the problem persists through any combination of function, PARTITION BY and ORDER BY that I can find.
Any insights would be appreciated!

Hello All,
Noob here. Trying to group by date in report and it is not working as expected. The date fields include a date/times i.e. 12/23/2006 9:45:00 AM. I can change the date properties to make the data appear as 12/23/2006, but when I group on date, it returns multiple rows showing the same date instead of just one row with the one date. The data is aggregated for the grouping so it seems like it should work properly. Here is an example of what I am trying to do.
Current...
Date Data
12/23/2006 9:45:00 AM 12
12/23/2006 10:00:00 AM 8
12/23/2006 10:15:00 AM 5
Want it to be...
Date Data
12/23/2006 25
Using SQL Server 2000 and RS2000
Thanks,

To give you some context we have a new amendments application (nothing fancy, excel based with SQL Server back end) that allows users to submit amendments to product data (Product Info, PO Prices, Dates etc.). There is also an admin tool that a team uses to action these amendments in the various systems.
The old version of this tool, users submitted amendments by style and could if need be submit multiple amendments against one product at the same time. The new tool, I believe for audit reasons, users submit by amendment type, so for example I would submit a cost price change for a given style.
The issue now is that on the occasions where a user has multiple amendments, they now come through separately. So cost price would be Amendment 1 and a date change would be amendment 2 even though they could be the same product. This could potentially mean that the admin team would be duplicating work if the paperwork is updated and sent after each amendment, whereas before they would make both changes and only send the paperwork once.
Having not built either of these tools, I've been tasked with trying to fix this, my two thoughts being either to amend the user form to somehow capture/ allow users to submit amendments together or try to use the existing data and doing the grouping dynamically in the back end. Use that lag to look at grouping any submitted amendments that occur within 30mins of the first occurrence of that style
This grouping would then be given a joint time so when the 'time lag' period passes the amendments will be visible together.I've tried a few things and a few head on desk moments trying to get a set based approach but haven't been able to get where i want, its either an issue where amendments span an hour, such as 9:59 and then 10:03 or grouping together amendments that happen after the 30mins of the first one.
Here is some sample data
USE FF_Winning_Together;
IF OBJECT_ID(N'tempdb..#AmendTest',N'U') IS NOT NULL
DROP TABLE #AmendTest;
CREATE TABLE #AmendTest
(
AmendmentIDINT IDENTITY(1,1)NOT NULL,

If they have a % work of 0, I do not want to see anything. But if the % changes, from say .5 to .75, I would need the first and last month they were at .5, and the first and last month they were at .75

I'm using SQL Server 2000.
Example table:
PeopleID Date Status
1 2004-01-01 True
1 2005-01-01 True
1 2006-01-01 True
2 2004-01-01 True
2 2005-01-01 False
2 2006-01-01 True
I'm trying to find a way to query whether or not someone has had a specific status for 3 years in a row. As you can see from the table above, PeopleID 1 has had a "Status" of "True" for 3 years in a row, whereas PeopleID 2 hasn't--there was one year where they had "False".
I'm wondering I can query this, or if I'm going to have to scan the records manually. :(
I suppose I could write a stored procedure and do some looping too.
Appreciate any help, thanks!

My company is unusual in that our accounting periods are not actual months. We have what we call "Red Fridays." These are spaced 3-5 weeks apart. So, my company doesn't care what happened in the month of April, but they care what happened between April 4 and May 2 because these are the Red Fridays.
So, I have created a database with a table called "RedFridays" with the dates for this year. I want to combine this with various tables in our ERP database. I use a Left Outer Join between the Red Friday Dates and the corresponding date in the ERP database.
I need to create a custom grouping formula which accomplishes the following:
1. Subtract a certain number of months from today's date to determine which Red Friday would be the correct starting date.
2. Group records by date between that Red Friday and the second one. This would be listed as something like "Month 1".
3. Continue grouping in this way to the present date and that Red Friday range.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Now, as this job runs at 3 am, and I set the variable as GETDATE() - 1, it excluded the data from 12 am to 3 am in the resultset as Date is set as YYYY-MM-DD 03:00:00:000 I need this to be set as YYYY-MM-DD 00:00:00:000

Hi,
I have a requirement to be able to select and group records by the date portion of a datetime field. ie ignore the time when grouping so that all records lodged on a particular day are seen together.
I have been able to do this by
- converting the datetime data to the number of days since a given date
- inserting this into a temporary table
- retrieving the the data from the temporary table
- convert the data back to a date using DATEPART to display dd/mm/yy
This then gives me the data grouped as required but seems to be a very difficult solution - Is there an easier way??
Thanks in advance

In SQL 2005 I have the following view:
SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT StockCode, Warehouse, QtyOnHand, QtyAllocated, QtyOnOrder, QtyOnBackOrder, DateLastSale, DateLastStockMove,
DateLastPurchase
FROM dbo.MBL_VW_AgedStock_Sales
ORDER BY StockCode
This basically shows a list of stock codes (there are multiple stock codes the same) and the last sold date. What i need to do is group the stock codes which are the same together, and show the latest date.
For example I could have the following:
STOCK CODE Last Date Sold
PC1113 11/01/2007
PC1104 15/03/2007
PC1113 15/02/2007
What I want to see is a list that shows PC1113 with its latest sold date, i.e.
STOCK CODE Last Date Sold
PC1113 15/02/2007
PC1104 15/03/2007
Any ideas?

Hi there.
I'm trying to extract data from my SQL server & everything in the script I've got is working (extracting correct data) except for one field - which is for the most part it's off by +2 days (on a few occasions - I see it off by just +1 day or even +3, but it's usually the +2 days).
I'm told that it's due to the conversion formula - but - since SQL is not my native language, I'm at a bit of a loss.
The DB table has the date field stored as a type: CHAR (as opposed to 'DATE')
Can anyone out there help?
Please advise. Thanks.
Best.

Dear Expert!
A server with SQL 2005 sp2, Reporting Services and Sharepoint services (ver 3.0) (in integrated mode) gives an odd error. When viewing a Reporting Services report with a Date Time Picker, the date chosen is wrong. The preferred setting is Danish with the date format dd-mm-yyyy. The date picker shows the months in Danish but when selecting a date, and clicking on the Apply-button, the date reformats to US (mm-dd-yyyy).
Example:
When choosing 5th of September 2007 and clicking apply, it shows in the picker, 9th of May 2007.
When choosing 26th of September 2007 and clicking apply, it shows, again in US format, the RIGHT date but adds a timestamp 12:00 AM? in the end, making further enquiries to fail.
The report itself receives the right date and shows correctly. The only case it fails is, when the time stamp appears.
The server is a 32-bit one with 4 GB RAM. A testserver with identical collation on the Reportserver database cannot recreate the error. The site containing the reports has been set to Danish in the regional settings. To Reinstall is not an option.
The test report has no database connection whatsoever.
When setting the site to US, the timestamp wont appear at all.
The server has been restarted and the installation procedure was of the simple kind. No special tweaks at all.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards
Johan Rastenberger

Hello,
we need to track date/time of last update for each record in a table.
As we understand it, we can't use field type Timestamp as this type does
not use dates/times.
Is there any SQL function available which we can bind to a column or
do we really have to use triggers?
Greetings from Mannheim, Germany

Hi
i have the following situation. in my database i have a datetime field (dd/mm/yy hh:mms) and i also have a field timezone.
the timezone field has values in minutes that i should add to my datetime field so i have the actual time.
afterwards i split the datetime into date and time.
the last part i can accomplish (CONVERT (varchar, datetime, 103) as DATEVALUE and CONVERT (varchar, DATETIME, 108) as TIMEVALUE).
could anybody tell me how i can add the timezone value (in minutes) to my datetime value ?
i do all the calculations in my datasource (sql).
Thanks
V.

I want to display only the date part of a date field which contains both date & time information.
For example I have the value '2013-11-14 00:00:00.000' in my result set, and ideally I would like to show only '2013-11-14'.
I have looked up the datepart() command, however I can't work out how to return all parts of the date, rather than just the year, month, or day.
