May 30, 2007i have a client with a windows 2003 server with 4 processors & 32 GB RAM, then MSSQL 2000 SP3. our software seems to run fine on it until the Task Manager shows the MSSQL using 1.7GB of RAM. At this point the whole system seems to slow down to a snails pace. Any ideas as to why 1.7GB and it never goes over that amount no matter how much activity i run on it. Restart mssql and everything seems to run good up until we see the 1.7GB again.

Just Installed SQL2005 - And It's Not Running?

I was using SQL2000, and liked very much the EM tool etc....
But thought that I should maybe give SQL2005 a trial, so I installed same on my box...restarted...and hey, SQL isn't running.
At least there is no icon in the tray. I have checked under Services and it looks like it's up and running....but I have NO server at all?
What did I do wrong, or what do I need to do to "start" SQL2005?

I read other threads with this problem and one solution was to install SP1 on the workstation. Our server is running 9.00.2047(SP1) and my workstation SSMS version is 9.0.2047.00 so I'm assuming it's SP1 and I am still getting this error.
To make matters worse, I have jobs set up to run these packages ON the server, but they aren't working either because I have '...error authenticating proxy...Logon failure unknown user name or bad password'. I'm trying to use my Windows login because it has sysadmin rights; I created credentials, assigned them to a proxy under SSIS Package Execution; in the SQL Agent log I get the error '...SQLServer Error: 22046, Encryption error using CryptProtectData.'.
Any suggestions appreciated.

May 9, 2008Im working on a project to convert a C program from OCI(oracle) to ODBC(MsSQL).
One of the select statements uses oracle julian time:
"Select TO_NUMBER(TO_CHAR(TO_DATE('0101'||:styear,'mmddyyyy'),'J')) STYEAR from dual"
Its not a problem converting the statement, except msSQL uses 10/01/1900 as its origin for the julain calendar, where Oracle uses somewhere around 5000BC. my questions is, because this program is made to use oracle julian and need to keep it that way, how i can make the SQL conversion using oracles origin date?

OS Shutdown With Running MSSQL
Mar 10, 2008I have my suspicions, but I need some proof ...
Is restarting a Windows OS box without first stopping the MSSQL service comparable to a shutdown with nowait command? I know that MSSQL will recover, but wouldn't it recover more nicely if it was shutdown on its own terms prior to the box shutting down? OR. Since it's a Windows service does the OS *know* to stop the service gently, allow the engineto place checkpoints on every db and then shut down the OS?
I've googled plenty and cannot find an exact answer. Lots say it's fine to do - doesn't mean it's right ;)

I lost few days to solve a problem regarding the connection to an Oracle database server (10) with goal to execute a distributed transaction.
The environment was:
Windows Server 2003 Standard
MSSQL Server 2000 Standard
Oracle 10g Production Edition
The connection was quite easy to make with the Microsoft driver, but the error was:
Server: Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'MSDAORA' was unable to begin a distributed transaction.
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'MSDAORA' ITransactionJoin::JoinTransaction returned 0x8004d01b].
I tried to use the oracle odbc driver, but all kinds of errors were raised, regarding the TNS name and stuff like this. The real cause was that when you create the linked server you must to check the €œAllow inbound process€? in the provider options.
The Oracle ODBC driver allow distributed transactions.
Error Running Setup Script For MsSQL 2005

I have installed SQL 2005 and was trying to run one of the Samples. I installed SQL as an instance, but when I run the setup script, it fails because it can not assign permissions to the ASPNET account.
It looks like it thinks the account is ServerNameInstanceNameASPNET, but it should be ServerNameASPNET.

I will try to supply all of the information available to me to help generate some answers to the question I have. I am doing some benchmark testing of an application of how it deals with various database queries, for example oracle 10g, DB2 and MSSQL 2005.
I have a very simple database called "student" that has various tables, with various columns, all as mentioned very simplistic. Each table has a few hundred rows of data, the most being one table with 2000 rows. The same database (structure and dataset), is replicated across all 3 DB's.
In order to do the testing, I have been recording the same queries (select * from table_a, select * from table_b etc etc) for each database at an interface which monitors traffic between the client and db server, the problem starts here; The size of the tcpdumps are vastly greater for MSSQL vs oracle or db2. Some examples:
100 query or transaction dump:
mssql=3.7mb
oracl10g=133kb
50,000 query or transaction dump:
mssql=1.8gb
oracl10g=0.6gb
db2=0.6gb
as mentioned each database's tables and data are identical to my knowledge and all queries are the same. The bloated dumps are making mssql performance numbers look bad.
So my question is: What could be the reason for MSSQLs client/server queries to contain so much information, has anyone else come across this? Is there any setting or something I could try to minimize it?

This sends an automated email to the user with a link to activate the users registration. If the user does not register within 24 hours, his registration must be automatically deleted from the database using a stored procedure.I know how to do this using the global.aspx file, however there must be an alternative way of doing this, especially if the database is an SQL database. I have installed MS SQL Server 2005 and Service Pack 2 on a new Windows 32-bit environment. I also installed the 32-bit 10g client (the Administrator option). The tnsnames.ora file is configured properly and I can tnsping to the Oracle database without any issues. I have created a package in Visual Studio and it runs successfully when I execute the job manually. I saved the package to the MS SQL Server and when I log into Management Studio to create a job for this package, I receive the following error:

I have created the package and logged into the server with the same ID to set up the job. And I have set the ProtectionLevel property to "Don't Save Sensitive Data" since I know this has been an issue in the past when I tried automating the job. I've four posts regarding this error message on the MSDN forums that aren't helpful at this moment - I'm hoping that someone will have found a solution since those posts. Any suggestions are welcomed.
