Storing Pictures In Image Data Type

Apr 17, 2001

Hey all,

Just starting to investigate this. I need to store digital pictures in my database for use in claims and disputes. I have played a bit with the image datatype but notice that one picture takes up 1Mb as a TIFF and 3Mb as a JPEG. Does anybody work with this stuff and if you do what is the best picture format to use in regards to keeping clarity but minimizing size used in the db. Is there any load conversion routines that would shrink the size of the file.

Any suggestions or comments on this topic are appreciated.

Thx. Kelsey

Image Type Storing

May 6, 2000

1. How can I upload new pictures into the database through the browser.
2. Can you describe how the new picture of the product would be uploaded into the database.
3. How do you handle different formats that pictures come in gif, tif, jpeg,
etc.

4. How can you say that SQL server does support images well, because on
microsoft site they loaded up the satellite data of the earth into sqlserver
which is only picture data

Sending Uploaded Image To Data Access Class When Storing Image In SQL Server 2005

Apr 20, 2007

I am using the 3-tiered architecture design (presentation, business laws, and data acess layers). I am stuck on how to send the image the user selects in the upload file control to the BLL and then to the DAL because the DAL does all the inserts into the database. I would like to be able to check the file type in the BLL to make sure the file being uploaded is indeed a picture. Is there a way I can send the location of the file to the BLL, check the filetype, then upload the file and have the DAL insert the image into the database? I have seen examples where people use streams to upload the file directly from their presentation layer, but I would like to keep everything seperated in the three classes if possible. I also wasn't sure what variable type the image would be in the function in the BLL that receive the image from the PL. If there are any examples or tips anyone can give me that would be appreciated.

OPENXML And Binary/Image Data

Aug 17, 2005

I seem to be getting very annoying behaviour from SQL Server and was wondering what the correct method should be...I want to store some binary data in the database and I want to use a stored procedure.  I also want to pass some XML to the stored procedure where this XML contains the binary data. I will then use OPENXML to grab the binary data and stick in the table. In order to ensure the safe transmission of the binary through XML I Base64 encode it. Ok so far. The problem is that although OPENXML is supposed to assume that anything marked as Image/Binary will be Base64 encoded it then proceeds to Base64 encode it again and put that result into the database! So what am I missing, am I supposed use a CDATA section or something rather than Base64 encode my XML?

Get Binary Data From Image Column

May 13, 2008

Hi I have an image column (Spectrum) in a Table (ParticleEDS) which is populated with an array of a bunch of INT32's (4 bytes each)

Using TSQL is there any way that I can read each 4 bytes (convert this to an INT) and return this data for a given record (based on ParticleEDSID).

I know that there are 2048 x 4 bytes that make up the image column.

I would like the output of the query/stored procedure to be:

Value
------------
1 2342
2 2334
3 3343
.....
2048 1001

thanks!

Storing BitmapSource Image Data Into SQL CE

Jan 30, 2008

Hi,

I'm storing thumbnails in SQL CE and accessing them from my WPF application. The save seems to take place ok and there's binary data in the image field however when it comes back out it appears to be corrupted somehow. Can someone have a look at the code below and verify I'm doing the conversion correctly before storing in my image field? Thanks!

- Roland

Code Snippet
private byte[] GetArrayOfPixels(BitmapSource bitmapsource)
{
Int32 stride = bitmapsource.PixelWidth * bitmapsource.Format.BitsPerPixel / 8;
Int32 ByteSize = stride * bitmapsource.PixelHeight * bitmapsource.Format.BitsPerPixel / 8;
byte[] arrayofpixel = new byte[ByteSize];
bitmapsource.CopyPixels(arrayofpixel, stride, 0);
return arrayofpixel;
}

//I assign the byte array returned to my datatable like so:

MediaAsset asset = new MediaAsset(){

Thumbnail =
new Binary(GetArrayOfPixels(Thumbnail as BitmapSource));
}

//then I insert it into my tables collection
myDB.MediaAssets.InsertOnSubmit(asset);

//and submit the change
myDB.SubmitChanges();

Am I not getting that pixel array correctly for storage?

Thanks for the help!

Accessing Image Files Stored As Binary Data

Jul 11, 2006

Hi
When images are uploaded and stored directly into a sql database as binary data (eg in the club starter kit) how can those images be accessed and displayed.
When I open the images table in VWD  and select display data, the cells holding the image data hold a <binary data> tag. What I want to be able to do is get at that data, or actually get at the image so that it is displayed. My reason is this, at the moment the only way to access the images in the sql database after they have been uploaded is to log into the website and view them as an administrator of the site. It would be much simpler if I could access the database directly and view the contents of the images table.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Binary Data Type

Jan 23, 2006

I am trying to store a byte array in a database. I want to use binary to store the data but I am confused about the type. The byte array I am trying to store is a password hash from SHA512.
I hash a plain text value then store the result in a byte array. I then want to store the byte array in the database as binary but I am confused when its asking for the size of the binary field. In nvarchar a size of 2 would mean 2 characters.
How should I choose the size of this binary field, and what does the size mean. If I choose a size of 6 does that mean 6 characters, like 010110. Or is it stored differently?
The maximum size of a plain text password is 30 characters, and the salt used to generate the SHA512 hash has a maximum size of 16, but I don't know the exact size of the salt because its randomly picked when the salt is generated.
I need to make sure the size of my binary field will hold the largest possible password hash, but I don't want it too large so its never completely used.
How is this data stored in the binary field, and what size binary field should I choose to make sure there are no problems with the password hash being truncated, yet making sure I'm not just wasting by creating a field thats too large.
Thanks!

What MS SQL Data Type Should Be Used For Storing Things Like Forum Posts ?

Mar 31, 2008

Let's say a user profile page on a website contains a description about a car that the user wants to sell.  The user could try to be wise and write something very short like "buy my car" or the user could write a very lengthy description of his car to convince the buyer to make the purchase.
Or somebody creates a thread in a forum or replies to a topic (much like what we do here).
In these instances, what is the most efficient manner of storing the high-character content in these examples with SQL Server 2005?  Keep in mind that a user could make a 2-character post like "OK" or could write a long reply or create a huge profile.  So the data type has to be efficient and flexible.  Judging from the list of available types in my Express 2005, I would guess the varchar(MAX) or the text data types could be used.  Or would I use some other data type?
TIA.

Image Data Type

Sep 29, 2006

hi, i'm a student doing my final year project. during the user requirements stage, my client proposed storing all files (.doc, .jpg, .mp3) into the sql database. i found out that the way to do this is to write the files as binary data in order to store them in the database. my concern is will this data storage overload the database server? i read somewhere that the retrieval of data as binary data is the same as retrieving text. but the estimation of users is around 27,000.. if i'm not wrong, the sql database server should be MS SQL Server 2005, or at least 2003.

Boolean Data Type Not Available (workaround For Checkbox.checked Storing?)

Sep 2, 2006

I have a page for inventory price entry that I have used for a while. Now I need to add a checkbox for whether or not the price includes shipping. I added the checkbox to the form and had it posting 'True' or 'False' to the database as nchar(10) data type. When the gridview pulls up the data, I have the Item Template like this, so it shows a disabled checkbox either checked or not: <asp:CheckBox ID="CheckBox2" runat="server" Checked='<%# Convert.ToBoolean(Eval("Shipping")) %>' Enabled="False" /> This works fine for displaying the values, but I copied the checkbox to the Edit Item Template, but did not disabled this one. At first, I didn't change the databindings, leaving it Convert.ToBoolean(Eval("Shipping")), which allowed me to go into Edit mode, change the checkbox, then click update. At which point it would return to it's original state (meaning Update wasn't actually updating). However if I change the databindings, then the page won't display. I checked the SQL statement, and sure enough, it has theUpdateCommand="UPDATE [PartsTable] ... SET [Shipping] = @Shipping... WHERE [PartID] = @original_PartIDAfter fiddling with the sql statement, now I get Object cannot be cast from DBNull to other types. I think that means that the checkbox is sending a null value to the database.Any insight as to how to get this to work is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Move Text Data (not A File) Into An Image Data Type

Mar 11, 2008

The ERP manufacturer used an image data type to store large text data fields. I am trying to move these data types from one database to another database using either Sql Queries or MS Access. I can cast them as an 8000 char varchar to read them directly but have no luck importing into these image data fields.

Access and Crystal are not able to read these fields directly.

Any suggestions? Most information about these fields has to do with loading files but I am just moving data.

Thanks,

Ray
