Help Needed ...to Update The Datatable

Jan 8, 2007

hi,

I have my database stored in the sqlserver 2005. Using the table name i am retrieving the table and it is displayed to the user in the form of datagridview.I am allowing the user to modify the contents of the table, including the headers. Is it possible for me to update the table straightway rather than giving a sql update command for each and every row of the table .

Pls reply asap....

Can A DataTable Update An SQL Table?

Jul 24, 2007

Can you use a DataTable to update an SQL Table and can it be done in a batch UPDATE as opposed to incrementing through every row using a stored procedure similar to UPDATE SQLTable SET Position = @Position WHERE ID = @ID?

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Hierarchical Update Dataset - Refresh Datatable After Delete

Feb 5, 2015

Imagine the following scenario: two tables (say, "requests" and "details") are joined in a 1:n relationship on MSSQL 2008. Both tables contain an ID (autoincrement field) and a timestamp field for proper concurrency management. Data access in the frontend is provided by a typed dataset in VS 2010. There are SPs on the server which select, update, insert or delete data in each of the two tables (so, 8 SPs alltogether: uspRequestsSelect, uspDetailsInsert etc.). These SPs are used for data access in the dataset. The GUI is a Windows form with 2 datagridviews, one for request datatable and one for the child-relation-based datatable FK_request_details. So, each request shows its details. The form works well so far.

Now, trouble strikes. A business rule says: "the first details row of a request (=row with lowest ID) always has a 0 in column "additional fee". For additional detail rows, this field has to be set to constant value 45". In short: the first detail row of each request is free, second and later details are charged 45 €.

So, I created a SP "uspRequestFeeManager", which recalculates all (!) detail rows of a request. This SP is called in uspDetailsInsert, uspDetailsUpdate and uspDetailsDelete, as each of this cases causes the additional fee to be recalculated for all rows (as rowcount can change). In Management Studio, this works as well!

But: as the uspRequestFeeManager changes data even for rows the user did NOT touch, there's a concurrency exception in my frontend in the following case:

In a request with 2 detail rows (first row has fee = 0, second = 45), the user deletes the row with fee = 0. Committing via TableAdapterManager calls uspDetailsDelete, which calls uspRequestFeeManager, which sets the remaining single details row to a fee value of 0 (which is correct!). This causes TableAdapterManager.UpdateAll to fail ("concurrency exception; delete command has handled 0 of 1 expected records"), as uspRequestFeeManager has "edited" a row which the user didn't touch, and thus updated its timestamp as well. So, the list is out of sync.

The uspRequestFeeManager looked like a good idea... but it seems not to be.

Approach would be: instead of calling the uspRequestFeeManager from within the SP, call it programmatically after TableAfterManager.UpdateAll, and after that, 're-fill' the details datatable with the updated data. But that would transfer business logic from server to client. I don't like that...

My problem is what is the best way to look for this range (below) in the AnyDx field without multiple like statements?

example:
Update reports.MDC_DRG
SET ChronicOther = CASE When AnyDx like ('%,25000,%') Then 'Chronic' Else 'Other'
etc., etc.....

Update SQL Help Needed - SQL 2005 TSQL

Apr 16, 2008

Per my client, when it creates the qualifier for 'HCPS-DEN"' it needs to create the qualifier as 'AD' not 'HC'. Currently, with the present update script its inserting 'HC' on all. I need it to say when the 'HCPS-DEN' is used, insert the 'AD' not 'HC'. Everything else should be the HC.

I tried using a CASE statement:
CASE WHEN Description = 'HCPC - DEN' THEN 'AD' ELSE 'HC' END

however I get this back:

Msg 207, Level 16, State 1, Line 10
Invalid column name 'Description'.

I was trying to plug this part in where HC is being entered. I think its missing an obvious Join or maybe there is a better way to write this. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

declare @qualid int

Update Table Assistance Needed

May 22, 2008

Hello,
I am trying to update a table based on values that I have imported into a temporary table. Basically I have a list of lab codes (EMR_temp_labtest_configupdate) and each lab has a zseg code tied to it. The definitions for zseg code are in a separate table called (EMR_zseg_code_descriptions)

I need to update the lab_test_add_conf to add in each lab code that does not have any configuration information (not exists in lab_test_add_conf) based on the zsegcode.

For example a zsegcode (defined in the emr_zseg_code_descriptions table) is ZBL and the lab code 003277 fits into the zseg category according to the temp table. For each lab code that first into the ZBL category a row needs to be inserted for

Example of table data:

emr_temp_labtest_config

labtestcode, zsegcode
003277, ZBL

emr_zseg_code_descriptions
zsegcode, valuecode
ZBL, PATRAC
ZBL, HERITG

I want to look at the data in the temp table and determine which category it is in and then insert into the lab_test_add_conf table a row for each lab test each zseg table value code that exists.

My Final Goal:
lab_test_add_conf:

lab test code, valuecode
003277, PATRAC
003277, HERITG

I know I need to do an update statement but I am not sure how to set up the SET statement or if there is anythign that I need to take into consideration. Here is my code so far.....any thoughts?

select a.labtestcode
from EMR_temp_labtest_configupdate a
Where Not Exists
(Select *
From lab_test_add_conf b
where a.labtestcode = b.labtest_key)

update table lab_test_add_conf

select a.labtestcode,b.zsegcode,b.valuecode,b.valuedesc,b.valuetype,b.units,
b.tablename,b.fieldname
from EMR_temp_labtest_configupdate a
join emr_zseg_code_descriptions b on a.zsegcode = b.zsegcode

Help Needed To Implent Automatically Update Table And More....

Sep 3, 2002

Hi guys,

I am new to SQL server, but I need to develop a "big" application with it. Here's my application requirements:

1)Create a table, say TableA, in SQL server 7 or 2000 database,say DB1, based on another Oracle database,say DB2, on a remote server. Update TableA based on DB2 every day in some specific time.
2) If new records are inserted into the TableA,some other tables needed to update in DB1. At the same time, an e-mail will send to three receipts.

I have no idea of which function or method I can use to fulfill the requirements. Can any experts here give me some advice, detail explanation would be grateful.

I appreciate any help you provide.

The Fastest Way To Perform An Update ... Advice Needed :)

Nov 12, 2006

Hi all,

I have a situation where my Visual C# application presents a number of fields. In order to update a student object, I wish to call a stored proc. 1 or more fields can be updated... And If one is left null, then I don't want to update it, but instead I want to keep the old value.

I am really wondering if I am approaching this the right way. The following stored proc does what I want it to do, however I'm thinking there may be a faster way...

Here it is:

-- Update a student, by ID.

DROP PROCEDURE p_UpdateStudent

CREATE PROCEDURE p_UpdateStudent

@ID INT,

@NewFName VARCHAR(25),

@NewOName VARCHAR(25),

@NewLName VARCHAR(25),

@NewDOB DATETIME,

@NewENumber VARCHAR(10),

@NewContactAID INT,

@NewContactBID INT

AS

BEGIN

SET NOCOUNT ON;

-- DECLARE THE OLD VALUES

DECLARE @FName AS VARCHAR(25)

DECLARE @OName AS VARCHAR(25)

DECLARE @LName AS VARCHAR(25)

DECLARE @DOB AS DATETIME

DECLARE @ENumber AS VARCHAR(10)

DECLARE @ContactAID AS INT

DECLARE @ContactBID AS INT

-- Get all of the old values

SELECT @FName = FName FROM TBL_Student WHERE ID = 10000

SELECT @OName = OName FROM TBL_Student WHERE ID = 10000

SELECT @LName = LName FROM TBL_Student WHERE ID = 10000

SELECT @DOB = DOB FROM TBL_Student WHERE ID = 10000

SELECT @ENumber = ENumber FROM TBL_Student WHERE ID = 10000

SELECT @ContactAID = ContactAID FROM TBL_Student WHERE ID = 10000

SELECT @ContactBID = ContactBID FROM TBL_Student WHERE ID = 10000

-- USE ISNULL to set all of the new parameters to the provided values only if they are not null

-- Keep the old ones otherwise.

SET @NewFName = ISNULL(@NewFName, @FName)

SET @NewOName = ISNULL(@NewOName, @OName)

SET @NewLName = ISNULL(@NewLName, @LName)

SET @NewDOB = ISNULL(@NewDOB, @DOB)

SET @NewENumber = ISNULL(@NewENumber, @ENumber)

SET @NewContactAID = ISNULL(@NewContactAID, @ContactAID)

SET @NewContactBID = ISNULL(@NewContactBID, @ContactBID)

-- Do the update

UPDATE TBL_Student

SET FName = @NewFName,

OName = @NewOName,

LName = @NewLName,

DOB = @NewDOB,

ENumber = @NewENumber,

ContactAID = @NewContactAID,

ContactBID = @NewContactBID

WHERE

ID = @ID

END

GO

So yeah it works. But As you can see I wish to keep an old copy of the values to perform checks pre update....

Is there any faster way, or am I on the right track? I need a pro's advice :) (before i write all of my procs!!)

Thanks all.

Help Needed On How To Update Individual Fields When Importing Data Into Tables

Sep 12, 2001

Help -
I need to import data into an existing table. Most import rows were unique, so I had no problem using DTS and appending. However, some import rows match existing rows except for one column/field that contains updated/new data, and I have to either replace the entire row with the imported row, or replace the individual field with the new data. How do I do that when there are many rows to import? It would take forever typing in all the data using UPDATE. Thanks in advance for your help!

Using A Datatable In Sql

Dec 11, 2006

Hi I am trying to use the results of a datatable as an input to a ne SQL statement.
 The datatable is created and populted by the source below after previously creating MyLookupCommand
MyLookupReader = MyLookupCommand.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.CloseConnection)
Dim Mydatatable = New DataTable()
Mydatatable.Load(MyLookupReader)

I now create a new SQL string allong the lines of
SELECT tableA.field1 FROM TableA INNERJOIN Mydatatable ON tableA.field2 = Mydatatable.Filed9
 However I get the following error
 Invalid object name 'Mydatatable'.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this.

possibley of interest is that I would have like to have done this in 1 SQL but the results in Mydatatable are from a SELECT DISTINCT and Field1 is a text filed that can't be used in a DISTINCT statement, hence using two statements.
Many thanks in advance

Constructing A Datatable

Dec 27, 2006

Hi,
I am experimenting to make a datatable in C# code in a page. This table should be a disconected table with Only valid for the present session.
I try the following code:
public partial class Default2 : System.Web.UI.Page
{
    DataTable DT = new DataTable("TEST");

    protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
    {
        if (!IsPostBack)
        {
            DataColumn Col1 = new DataColumn("Col1");
            Col1.DataType = typeof(Int32);
            Col1.AllowDBNull = false;
            DT.Columns.Add(Col1);

            DataColumn Col2 = new DataColumn("Col2");
            Col2.DataType = typeof(string);
            Col2.AllowDBNull = true;
            DT.Columns.Add(Col2);

            DataColumn Col3 = new DataColumn("Col3");
            Col3.DataType = typeof(DateTime);
            Col3.AllowDBNull = true;
            DT.Columns.Add(Col3);

            GridView1.DataSource = DT;
        }
    }

    protected void Button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
    {
        for (int i = 1; i < 20; i++)
        {
            DataRow MyRow = DT.NewRow();
            MyRow["Col1"] = i;
            DT.Rows.Add(MyRow);
        }
    }
}
For one reason or the other. if I click the button I get the message that Col1 dus not make part of the table TEST. It turns out that there are no columns added to the table. altroug the code in the page load part has been run. I suppose I have to do something with the session state to make my DataTable persistent, but I have no idea what. Can somebody help me out?
Thanks!

Using Bulkcopy.WriteToServer(DataTable)

Nov 11, 2007

I'm trying to use the SQL Bulk copy class to bulk import from a text file.I'm getting the following error: Line 24: bulkCopy.WriteToServer(CreateDataTableFromFile()); System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a
connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may
be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow
remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open
a connection to SQL Server) I've even tried to allow remote connections thro pipes and restarted the database engine but to no avail. Any inputs/suggestions?

Updating SQL Database - Using DataTable

Jan 8, 2008

I am quite new to ASP.net 2.0. I have had plenty of experience using ADO.net in standard windows applications.
In my app I am opening a connection to an SQL database and I am creating a DataTable without a DataSet:
Shared m_cnADONetConnection As New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection
Shared m_daDataAdapter As System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter
Shared m_rowPosition As Integer
Shared m_dtContacts As New System.Data.DataTable
I am initializing everything and filling my DataTable when the Page first Loads if it isnt a postback.Protected Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Form1.Load
If Not Page.IsPostBack Then
m_rowPosition = 0
m_cnADONetConnection.ConnectionString = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=C:First ASP DatabaseApp_DataMyFirstDatabase.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True"
m_cnADONetConnection.Open()m_daDataAdapter = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter("Select * From Books", m_cnADONetConnection)m_cbRefillCommand = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand
m_daDataAdapter.Fill(m_dtContacts)
Me.ShowCurrentRecord()
End IfEnd Sub
The Me.ShowCurrentRecord Sub assigns the values of the current record(row) in the DataTable via (m_rowPosition) to TextBox controls on the form:
I also have record navigation buttons on my form: << < > >> Moving me from record to record (row to row) by incrementing or decrementing m_rowPosition
All is good! I am able navigate the DataTable and the textboxes change their text properties accordingly from record to record.
The only other control on my form is a button which I'm coding its click event to save changes that I made to the current row (record) by changing the values in the textboxes then clicking save.
 Here is my code:Protected Sub ButtonSave_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ButtonSave.Click
If m_dtContacts.Rows.Count <> 0 Then
m_dtContacts.Rows(m_rowPosition).BeginEdit()m_dtContacts.Rows(m_rowPosition)("Title") = TBTitle.Text
m_dtContacts.Rows(m_rowPosition)("Author") = TBAuthor.Textm_dtContacts.Rows(m_rowPosition)("YearPublished") = TBYearPublished.Text
m_dtContacts.Rows(m_rowPosition)("Price") = TBPrice.Textm_dtContacts.Rows(m_rowPosition)("LastReadOn") = TBLastReadOn.Textm_dtContacts.Rows(m_rowPosition)("PageCount") = TBPageCount.Text
m_dtContacts.Rows(m_rowPosition).AcceptChanges()
m_dtContacts.Rows(m_rowPosition).EndEdit()
m_dtContacts.AcceptChanges()
m_daDataAdapter.Update(m_dtContacts)
End Sub
After I click save I can navigate through my records and back to the one I just changed and updated and all is well. The changes were made in the table.
However, when I close the page and exit out of Visual Web Developer and reopen the database: THE CHANGES WERENT UPDATED!!!
 This worked all the time in VB2005.net when developing a standard windows app.
Can I use the same approach I was using in my code above or am I missing something.

I have read and searched all over and what I'm thinking is that my UpdateCommand, InsertCommand, DeleteCommand, SelectCommand are empty.
Do I have to do it this way?
