Help With Sql Query Selecting Quizes That Have Not Been Taken

Hello,
The following tables exist
QuizTable
QuizID (primary key)
Title
Description
IsAvailable

UserQuizTable
UserQuizID (PK)
QuizID (FK)
DateTimeComplete
Score
UserName

I need to develop a stored procedure that will return all of the quizes from the QuizTable that are available and that a particular user has not yet taken.

To return a list of quizes with no entries at all in the UserQuiz table, I'm using the following SQL:
select Quiz.QuizID, Quiz.Title, Quiz.Description,
Quiz.IsAvailable FROM Quiz Left Outer Join
UserQuiz ON Quiz.QuizID = UserQuiz.QuizID
Where UserQuiz.QuizID is null
AND Quiz.IsAvailable=0

This is only getting me 1/2 the way to where I need to end up.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Help Selecting A Value From SQL To Pass To Query

I am trying to do the following. I am capturing the logged in username from Windows Authentication then stripping the domain name using the following codeProtected Sub SqlDataSource1_Selecting(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSourceSelectingEventArgs) Handles SqlDataSource1.Selecting Dim Bareusername e.Command.Parameters("@strusername").Value = My.User.Name Bareusername = My.User.Name.Replace("MyDomain", "") e.Command.Parameters("@LoginName").Value = Bareusername End Sub I use the derived value as the where clause in a select query Select * from Master Where AccountName = @LoginName. This allows a user to only see their own information in DetailsView1. This is working as desired. I have another column in the Master table named ID. This ID is the key that I need to reference to allow users to see and edit data in other tables. So I would like to be able to do something like Select ID from Master where AccountName = @LoginName and be able to pass this value to a Select statement against another table(Awards) for a DetailsView2 on the same page. Alternatively the value that I am trying to query is in the first row of DetailsView1. Is it possible to access the value in that field and pass it in the query for DetailsView2? This would be simpler if possible.I am not sure how to go about this and would appreciate any guidance that you could provide. I have found a lot on the web regarding this based on a selected value but not through the method that I am trying to use. Thanks in advance,Ken

Selecting A Distinct Row Query

I am trying to append data from a source table to a destination table, the only difference between the tables is that a primary key has been established on the destination table. Problem is, the source table has a handful of duplicate values in the column that corresponds to primary on destination table; so when I run the query I get a primary key conflict. What I'd like to do is select distinct values from the source table to avoid the conflict, but am having trouble getting it to run. Here is the statement-

INSERT INTO cust_master
SELECT DISTINCT cust_master_temp.*
FROM cust_mast_temp LEFT OUTER JOIN
cust_master ON cust_master.temp.CUST_NUMBER = cust_master.CUST_NUMBER

Doesn't seem to be understanding "Distinct"

Any Ideas?

Selecting Only Earliest Record - Query Help

I'm no SQL whizz yet but I'm learning hard, and need to get some information from our DB rather urgently so have resorted to this fantastic forum, only I can't find what I'm looking for.

Basically I'm selecting a whole load of entries that have a (admission)date field after 2001, but I only want to return the Earliest (admission) for each (patients number).

Here is the script I have created to select all the data, but how can I limit the results to just the earliest (admission date) for each (patient).

SELECT
Admission_Year, Admission_Month, Age_On_Admission, [Length of stay(continuing)], [Patient's Number], [Cons epis seq no], Sex, [Main Primary Pas Diag], [Date of Death], [Epi duration], [OP Code1], [Admission date], [Date of Death] - [Admission date] AS [days before death],[Intended Management]
FROM dbo.Admissions
WHERE (Admission_Year > 2001) AND (Age_On_Admission > '64') AND ([Intended Management] = 'inpatient') AND ([Date of Death] IS NULL)

I would really appreciate it if anyone can help with this, I'm sorry I can't really contribute to this forum as an SQL expert as .net is really my forte and I usually spend my time contributing to the asp.net forums. :)

Help With A Query (Selecting Distinct Rows As Well As How To Use NOW())

Hi All,

I'm a beginner in SQL and would like some help with writing a query that needs to:

a) Return the latest time that an event happened (along with the event), and also

b) Determine if this event occurred more than 30mins ago.

For example, Table EVENT consists of the following data:

EVENT DateTime,

A 16/1/08, 14:03:55

B 16/1/08, 14:30:27

A 16/1/08, 17:42:18

I would like the results for the first part of query to be:

EVENT DateTime,

A 16/1/08, 17:42:18

B 16/1/08, 14:30:27

I have tried creating a query based off this thread, but for some reason it kept complaining that the EVENT column in Table EVENT didn't exist.

For the part b), I have no clue as to what I should do apart from that I would need to use NOW().

Any help would be appreciated.

Selecting Multiple Column From Sub Query.

Hi,
I am having two tables Products and Transaction

In products I have ProductID and Description. (10 Records)
In Transaction I have ProductID, Lot, Quantity and ListID . ( 4 Million Records)

When I use the inner join between these tables as below query its taking lot of time to give output.

select ProductID, Desc, Lot, qty from Products inner join Transactions on Products.ProductID = Transactions.ProductID
where ListID = '9090909'

otherwise, if I use the below query its takes very few milli seconds to give output but I am not able to get the description from the product table.
select * from Transactions TR where TR.ListID= '9090909' and TR.ProductID in

(select NDC from Products where Products.ProductID = TR.ProductID)

Any from can help me to get the description too at very few times.

Selecting The Most Recently Edited Item AND Selecting A Certain Type If Another Doesn't Exist

I've got a big problem that I'm trying to figure out:
I have an address table out-of-which I am trying to select mailing addresses for companies UNLESS a mailing address doesn't exist; then I want to select the physical addresses for that company. If I get multiple mailing or physical addresses returned I only want the most recently edited out of those.

I don't need this for an individual ID select, I need it applied to every record from the table.

My address table has some columns that look like:
[AddressID] [int]
[LocationID] [int]

[Type] [nvarchar](10)
[Address] [varchar](50)
[City] [varchar](50)
[State] [char](2)
[Zip] [varchar](5)
[AddDate] [datetime]
[EditDate] [datetime]

AddressID is a primary-key non-null column to the address table and the LocationID is a foreign key value from a seperate Companies table.
So there will be multiple addresses to one LocationID, but each address will have it's own AddressID.

How can I do this efficiently with perfomance in mind???

Hi. I have an sql query that i use to insert articles to a sql databse table and for that i use addWithValue to select witch textboxes etc goes where in the database.
Now i need to retrive these values and place them back into some other textboxes (some of them multiline) ,and i wonder if there are any similar ways to retrive values like AddWithparameter so i can easily do textBox.text = //whatever goes here ?

that's what I have, and I need to find all instances where parent_key=child_key.

I've been trying something similiar to...

[SELECT name, count(name), name2, count(name2)
FROM people
GROUP BY name, name2
HAVING (count(name)>1 AND count(name2)>1)]

The problem is that I keep getting error messages because I can't use
the alias' or sum(coalesce(.....)).

I was hoping you guys might have a suggestion for me. Thanks ahead of time.

Selecting A View And Selecting FROM A View Is Wildly Different

A colleague of mine has a view that returns approx 100000 rows in about 60 seconds.

He wants to use the data returned from that view in an OLE DB Source component.

When he selects the view from the drop-down list of available tables then SSIS seems to hang without any data being returned (he waited for about 15 mins).

He then changed the OLE DB Source component to use a SQL statement and the SQL statement was: SELECT * FROM <viewname>

In this instance all the data was returned in approx 60 seconds (as expected).

This makes no sense. One would think that selecting a view from the drop-down and doing a SELECT *... from that view would be exactly the same. Evidently that isn't the case.

Can anyone explain why?

In the selecting event, I make sure that an actual select has been performed (and not on null data); however, I have cancelselectonnullparameters set to true to stop it, because initially it will be null.However, the selecting event runs, even when I cancel it, the emptydatatemplate shows up. How do I prevent that from occuring?

I have one table and it contains a column named ID Number, and a column named Date. I have a Do While statement that runs a SQL select statement a few times based on the number of records with the same ID Number. During the Do While statement the information is copied into another table and deleted from the old table. After I look at the results, I see that at the second Do While loop, the data was not selected and the Select statement did not run... so the old variable value from varValue is used again... Any reasons on why?

Selecting * WHILE Converting

I have a tbale with maybe 30 columns and I'm selecting all where a
record number matches a parameter I've passed. That works fine,
however is there any way to do some conversions to fields when
selecting without having to list out each column? For instance
this is what it looks like now:

SELECT *
FROM Losses
WHERE @AppRecord = AppRecord
ORDER BY Record ASC

But I want to convert say one column, is there a way to keep similar syntax instead of listing out each column?

SELECT *, CONVERT(varchar(15), [Losses]) as [Losses]
FROM Losses
WHERE @AppRecord = AppRecord
ORDER BY Record ASC

And the column I'm converting is of type 'money'. I'm converting
it to get rid of the extra zeroes at the end. If you know a

Selecting Fields On The Fly

Hi

I have a content management system that I am building. My CMS has a
pages table which contains 60 fields, some are varchars, some are ntext
some are dates etc. They have field names which match their purpose
like varchar1, ntext3 etc. These fields are used up depending on which
template is applied to the page.

The templatefields table holds holds the information about each field
in a template. It's control type (rich text control, date control etc)
and the field in the pages table that the data will be stored in
(varchar1,ntext3 etc)

What I want to be able to do is loop through the templatefeilds table
for a particular template and then using the field name for the pages
table, go to the pages table and get the value to populate the control.

So to clarify, I would like to produce a stored procedure which outputs
the page field name (varchar1) from the templatefields table and
varchar1's value in the pages table. Maybe in a temporary table.

Is this possible?

Any guidance would be appreciated..

We are developing an Access application that will be used to run adhoc reports against a SQL Server table. Selection criteria is entered on a form, a passthru query is built on the fly, and the results are formatted for output via an Access report.

There are 16 different fields on the query form. Two are date fields (from / to), the rest are text. The user is required to supply a date range for the report. They may specify any combination of the remaining query fields.

Examples:
From/To dates, part number, work order number
From/To dates, location, operation, sales order number, operator

What is the best scheme to use for the indexes? One index for each potential query field? Or, a single index that includes ALL query fields? Or, some other combination?

I should also mention that there will be no realtime updates to the table. On a weekly basis, we will import updates from a mainframe extract (dropping the indexes prior to the import, rebuilding them afterwards).

Selecting The Database Name.

Can anyone help me in finding out the database name?
For example, @@SERVERNAME gives you the name of the server
on which you SQL Server is running.
In the same way, is there any global variable which gives me the
name of the database in the context in which I am running my queries or stored procs?

I have a query that returns a certain amount of results. How do I select the last row??? I know I can do the top row by doing (top 1). Basically I need the complete opposite. Please help...

I looked around and couldn't find anything on it.
