How To Return The Result Of An EXEC From A Function

Sep 21, 2007

Hi,

I am trying to find a way to return the result of an EXEC(*sqlstring*) from a function. I can return the tsql but not the result of an execute.

This is my function:

ALTER FUNCTION [dbo].[ReturnPickItemValue]
(
-- Add the parameters for the function here
@TypeID int,
@CaseID int
)
RETURNS varchar(max)
AS
BEGIN
-- Declare the return variable here
DECLARE @RTN varchar(max)

IF(SELECT IncludeDates FROM TBL_LU_PICK WHERE PickTypeID = @TypeID) = 1
BEGIN
SET @RTN = 'SELECT PickItem I +
CASE D.IsStartDateEstimated
WHEN 0 THEN CAST(StartDate as varchar)
ELSE CAST(dbo.ReturnEstimatedDate(D.IsStartDateEstimated, 0) as varchar)
END +
CASE D.IsEndDateEstimated
WHEN 0 THEN CAST(EndDate as varchar)
ELSE CAST(dbo.ReturnEstimatedDate(D.IsEndDateEstimated, 1) as varchar)
END

FROM TBL_LU_PICK L
INNER JOIN TBL_Pick_Items I ON I.PickTypeID = L.PickTypeID
INNER JOIN TBL_PICK P ON P.PickItemID = I.PickItemID
LEFT JOIN TBL_PickDates D ON D.PickID = P.PickID
WHERE L.PickTypeID = ' + CAST(@TypeID as varchar) + '
AND P.CaseID = ' + CAST(@CaseID as varchar)
END
ELSE
BEGIN
SET @RTN=
'SELECT I.PickItem
FROM TBL_LU_PICK L
INNER JOIN TBL_Pick_Items I ON I.PickTypeID = L.PickTypeID
INNER JOIN TBL_Pick P ON P.PickItemID = I.PickItemID
WHERE L.PickTypeID = ' + CAST(@TypeID as varchar) + '
AND CaseID = ' + CAST(@CaseID as varchar)
END

RETURN @RTN

END

Each time I try " RETURN EXEC(@RTN) " or something similar I get an error.

I have tried executing the tsql and assigning the result to a varchar and returning that varchar but i get an error.

Anyone with any ideas?

Can The Result From An EXEC(@sqlcommand) Be Returned To A Variable

Apr 11, 1999

Is it possible to get the result from an EXEC(@sqlcommand) statement into a variable?

As part of a SQL loop, it is necessary for me to run an EXEC() command to process an SQL statement. I have succesfully implemented this, but have been unable to get the results from the EXEC() statement into a variable to allow this data to be inserted into a table. Is this possible?

For Example (I know this doesn't work, but it is effectively what I am trying to achieve):

select @result = EXEC(@sqlcommand)

I could then use the @result variable in an insert statement to update a table with the results from the EXEC command.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...

Regards,
Wayne

Linked Server Problem With Exec @result=myproc

Jan 31, 2002

I'm having some weird problems with calling remote stored procedures.

Two servers, both windows 2000 sp2, both running sql 7 version 7.00.961.

Server A is actually a cluster, but server B is a development server and not a cluster.

First off, server B can link to server A, but server A can't link to server B. We get a can't create connection error. We've used the client network utility to specify tcp/ip for both. I'm using the link settings as SQL Server connection (rather than an odbc connection) mapped to the sa user id and password. The password is blank on server B though.

I can run a remote stored procedure on server A from server B fine. I get the proper response back too. I can select anything from any database on A from B without trouble.

But here's my problem: If I use exec @result=ServerA.MyDB.dbo.myproc from server B, @result is always null. If I run MyDB.dbo.myproc from server A directly, @result comes back with the proper value.

I tried using an OUTPUT argument but it has the identical results. If I run it on server A, it works. If I run it from server B, the output argument is null.

Just for grins, I tried setting the @result value to 0 before calling MyProc. It didn't come back null, but it came back as the same value I set it before calling the procedure.

I verified that the sqlagent user has full permissions to the temp directory. TMP and TEMP both point to the same ..localemp directory, and it has full permissions in that directory.

Does anyone have any idea of things I can try? Is there a known bug with cluster services? I don't think this is happening when server B links to another server that isn't clustered.

Transact SQL :: How To Store Result Of Exec Command Into Temp Table

Apr 7, 2013

I wanted to insert the result-set of a Exec(@sqlcommand) into a temp table. I can do that by using:

Insert into #temp
Exec(@sqlcommand)

For this to accomplish we need to define the table structure in advance. But am preparing a dynamic-sql command and storing that in variable @sqlcommand and the output changes for each query execution. So my question is how to insert/capture the result-set of Exec(@sqlcommand) into a temp table when we don't know the table structure.

Problem Assigning SQL Task Result To A Variable - Select Count(*) Result From Oracle Connection

I have an Execute SQL Task that executes "select count(*) as Row_Count from xyztable" from an Oracle Server. I'm trying to assign the result to a variable. However when I try to execute I get an error:

Which data type should I use for the variable, RowCount? I've tried Int16, Int32, Int64.

End Result Is Main Query Results Ordered By Nested Result

May 1, 2008

As the topic suggests I need the end results to show a list of shows and their dates ordered by date DESC.
Tables I have are structured as follows:

SHOWS
showID
showTitle

SHOWACCESS
showID
remoteID

VIDEOS
videoDate
showID

SQL is as follows:

SELECT shows.showID AS showID, shows.showTitle AS showTitle,
(SELECT MAX(videos.videoFilmDate) AS vidDate FROM videos WHERE videos.showID = shows.showID)
FROM shows, showAccess
WHERE shows.showID = showAccess.showID
AND showAccess.remoteID=21
ORDER BY vidDate DESC;

I had it ordering by showTitle and it worked fine, but I need it to order by vidDate.
Can anyone shed some light on where I am going wrong?

thanks

CASE Function Result With Result Expression Values (for IN Keyword)

Aug 2, 2007

I am trying to code a WHERE xxxx IN ('aaa','bbb','ccc') requirement but it the return values for the IN keyword changes according to another column, thus the need for a CASE function.

WHERE GROUP.GROUP_ID = 2 AND DEPT.DEPT_ID = 'D' AND WORK_TYPE_ID IN ( CASE DEPT_ID WHEN 'D' THEN 'A','B','C' <---- ERROR WHEN 'F' THEN 'C','D ELSE 'A','B','C','D' END )

I kept on getting errors, like

Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 44Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'WHERE'.
which leads me to assume that the CASE ... WHEN ... THEN statement does not allow mutiple values for result expression. Is there a way to get the SQL above to work or code the same logic in a different manner in just one simple SQL, and not a procedure or T-SQL script.

Return Subquery Result For Only First Row In Result

Apr 7, 2015

I'm using a subquery to return a delivery charge line as a column in the result set. I want to see this delivery charge only on the first line of the results for each contract. Code and results are below.

declare @start smalldatetime
declare @end smalldatetime
set @start = '2015-03-22 00:00' -- this should be a Sunday
set @end = '2015-03-28 23:59' -- this should be the following Saturday

select di.dticket [Contract], di.ddate [Delivered], di.item [Fleet_No], di.descr [Description], dd.min_chg [Delivery_Chg], dd.last_invc_date [Delivery_Invoiced],

[code]....

In this example, I only want to see the delivery charge of 125.00 for the first line of contract HU004377. For simplicity I have only shown the lines for 1 contract here, but there would normally be many different contracts with varying numbers of lines, and I only want to see the delivery charge once for each contract.

Fetch Last 2 Bills

Apr 2, 2015

I want to fetch all bills (except cancelled bills) for a given month and fetch the previous bill date.

This is to find out the frequency of a vehicle visit to a workshop.

Sample Data

Division,ChasNo,BillDt,Status
D1,C1,01/01/2015,Null
D1,C1,15/01/2015,Null
D1,C1,23/02/2015,Null
D2,C1,26/02/2015,Null
D2,C2,02/01/2015,Null
D2,C2,16/01/2015,Null
D2,C2,21/02/2015,Null
D1,C3,24/01/2015,Cancelled

Result Expected

D1,C1,23/01/2015,15/01/2015
D2,C1,26/02/2015,Null
D2,C2,21/02/2015,16/01/2015

What I tried is

Declare @Mh smallint,@Yr smallint
Select @Mh=2,@Yr=2015

Select Division,ChasNo,BillDt Into #CMBills from Service_Bills Where Month(BillDt)=@Mh and Year(BillDt)=@Yr and Status Is Null

Select SB.Division,SB.ChasNo,CMB.BillDt as CurBillDt,Max(SB.BillDt) as PreBillDt,Datediff(day,Max(SB.BillDt),Max(CMB.BillDt)) as DiffDays from #CMBills CMB
Left Join Service_Bills SB On SB.Division=CMB.Division and SB.ChasNo=CMB.ChasNo and SB.Status Is Null and SB.BillDt<CMB.BillDt
Group By SB.Division,SB.ChasNo,CMB.BillDt

But I'm not getting details for all the bills I fetched.

Problem With FETCH LAST

Jul 20, 2005

Hello everyone, hope someone can help me with this.I have a SQL stored procedure that inserts a record into a table, creates a cursor to fetch the last record that was added to get theunique key that was created and then writes that and other info to aseparate table. This procedure was working fine at our ISP under NT 4and SQL 7.We recently moved to another ISP on servers that are windows 2000 andSQL 2000. Now this code is going kerplooey. It actually worked finein the staging area but now that it was moved into production, it isnot working. also wanted to mention that the production database wasrestored from a backup. below is the code.the first time this is run it is ok, for example the transactionnumber is 1. the next time it is run, a new record is created in thesweep results with a transaction number of 2. but for some reason, when i declare the cursor to fetch the last record, it goes back tothe transaction number 1 record. so the counts from transaction 1don't match counts from transaction 2 and the next step has an errorcondition and doesn't work.thanks in advance for any help you can provideAnn Williams-- update the sweep results tableINSERT tbl_sweepresults (del_wrkfeedback_count,updnull_feedback_count, swp_feedback_count,swp_count_error, del_error, updnull_error, swp_error, init_error,sweep_date)VALUES (@var_del_wrkfeedback_count, @var_updnull_feedback_count,@var_swp_feedback_count,@var_swp_count_error, @var_del_error, @var_updnull_error,@var_swp_error, @var_init_error, GETDATE())-- create cursorDECLARE tbl_sweepresults_cursor SCROLL CURSOR FORSELECT transaction_no, sweep_date, init_error, updnull_feedback_countFROM tbl_sweepresultsOPEN tbl_sweepresults_cursor-- get transaction number, sweep date, init error, feedback sweepcount and pass to tbl_currentTrans for OPAL comparisonFETCH LAST FROM tbl_sweepresults_cursor INTO @var_transaction_no,@var_sweep_date, @var_init_error, @var_swp_countzeroDELETE tbl_currentTransINSERT tbl_currentTrans (current_transaction_no, current_sweep_date,current_init_error, current_swp_countzero)VALUES (@var_transaction_no, @var_sweep_date, @var_init_error,@var_swp_countzero)-- close the cursorCLOSE tbl_sweepresults_cursorDEALLOCATE tbl_sweepresults_cursor

Data Fetch

Apr 13, 2007

Hi,

I'm using a remote SQL Server Express database with a C# app, and to do so as most of you already know, there's no DataSource available, it's all around SQL. This poses a problem as when I want to browse (1 by 1 in my app, with search utility) the contents of a given table, I have to perform a Select command. Well the problem is when I do this it loads all records into a DataSet (or DataTable), which is fine by me, but one of my tables is expected to reach 400 or 500 records in a few months time. This will mean a lot of loading from the db once the app is launched. Is there a way to make this connection more efective? Thanks

Can't Fetch Record From Cursor

Nov 4, 2007

Hi,
I'm relatively inexperienced in sql, and am having trouble interpreting the behavior of a cursor in some code I have inherited.  When there is a record in both the Filters and FilterElements tables, the fetch_status is 0.  If there is a record in Filters, but no child record in FilterElements, the fetch_status is -1.  Since the tables are joined with a RIGHT OUTER JOIN, even when there is no corresponding record in FilterElements, a record is returned (I have verified running the select in a query window).  But when used in a cursor, the record is not fetched.  The fetch_status is -1.  Can anyone tell me why the fetch doesn't work in this case.  Thanks
----
DECLARE @CreatedByUser nchar(100), @WorkflowIDs varchar(50);
DECLARE @MyVariable CURSOR;
SET @MyVariable = CURSOR FOR
SELECT isnull(Filters.WorkflowIDs, ''),
isnull(FilterElements.CreatedByUser, '')

FROM Filters RIGHT OUTER JOINFilterElements ON Filters.ItemID = FilterElements.FiltersItemID
WHERE FiltersItemID = @FilterID;
OPEN @MyVariable;FETCH NEXT FROM @MyVariable
INTO @WorkflowIDs, @CreatedByUser;
