Create A Synonym For A Table Object On Remote Server
Apr 16, 2015I'm using SQL Server 2008R2. I am developing a database which requires access to data from other servers. So far I have been creating views using OPENQUERY (where there's a performance benefit) to select specifically the columns I want. Generally, for my purposes, I find these OPENQUERY based views to perform better (some times significantly so) to simple SELECT <COLUMNS> FROM <SERVER>.<DATABASE>.<SCHEMA>.<TABLE> WHERE <Where clause Statements> format views. My understanding is that this is because an OPENQUERY "pushes" the query processing to the remote server and simply returns the final result set to the local server i.e. there's no cross-server join/synchronization going on.
My question is, if I were to create a Synonym for a table object on the remote server, where does the processing happen if I query from this Synonym or create a join with this synonym to a table in my local database?Essentially, I am trying to understand if there are any "hidden gotcha's" primarily from a performance perspective, to using synonyms.

Apr 23, 2015A heavily-selected database will be in an inconsistent state for several hours during a batch process. For that time, a database snapshot is created and accessed instead. To allow constant client read access to the database, a database that only contains synonyms exists. Those synonyms point to the main database except during the batch process, at which time they point to the database snapshot.
To switch the synonyms, each synonym is dropped and then created pointing to the database snapshot (after its creation, of course). The drop/create occurs inside a transaction. Roughly, the SQL looks like this:

BEGIN TRANSACTION;
DROP SYNONYM [dbo].[some_proc];
CREATE SYNONYM [dbo].[some_proc] FOR [snapshot_db].[dbo].[some_proc];
GRANT EXECUTE, SELECT ON [dbo].[some_proc] TO public;
COMMIT TRANSACTION;
When the batch update is completed, the process is reversed with "snapshot_db" replaced with "regular_db". The SQL snippet above is dynamic SQL. What I've pasted is the dynamic SQL that is executed as a single batch.
While this switch is happening, clients are accessing the procedures through the synonyms, potentially at a high request rate. Testing reveals that clients can get the error:

I have a restore procedure and it will execute WITH EXECUTE AS 'domainmy username', for all the developers have exec permissions to this procedure. But newly installed server this procedure was failing with the following message. But the same procedure executing fine on other servers.

Once I've created thedatabase, I am able to immediately create tables and populate lookupdata, provided I remain connected to the server. If, however, Idisconnect and attempt to reconnect immediately, I'll get an errorsaying that my login is invalid for the new database.I can get around this by having my code simply wait 5 seconds beforeattempting to reconnect, but I'm curious to see if anybody here cangive an explaination for why this is happening. I'm using Visual Studio 2005 Pro and SQLExpress that comes with it.
I have my program running fine in XP Pro OS using a window user "Glen" (Computer administrator) with Administrator rights. This means that I installed VS 2005 using this window user "Glen"
I created another windows user "TestUser" (Limited account) in the same physical PC.
I tried to run the program and on the part that I need to access SQL table, I got the error [CREATE DATABASE permission denied in database 'master']
At the same time while using "TestUser" and running sqlcmd (to check if I can connect to SQL), I also got error HResult 0x2, Level 16, State 1.
I read alot on MSDN discussions and related links but it seems that I can't get the solution that I need.
SO HERE ARE MY QUESTIONS :
1. Am I allowed to run my program using user "TestUser" since SQL is installed using "Glen" windows user?
2. Do I need to add access rights to "TestUser" to allow the user to have CREATE rights? (Note : for security reason, I can add other access rights except Administrator)

BOL is very terse on the subject of creating a login with a hashed password. I need to store a script file with a create login for a sql server login, and I don't want the password as plain text. Here is what I've tried:

How Can I Get Actual Operation Cost From Actual Execution Plan?
Jul 25, 2006I have a view in SQLServer 2005. It took 30 sec. to finish. Then I deleted 4500 records from one table that is used in view. It took 90 sec. to finish now. I did a comparison on Actual Execution Plan between before I deleted data and after I deleted data, they are almost same, only different is Actual Number Rows become less after deleted data. So, I wonder why data become less but time become more. When I look closely on the Actual Execution Plan, the ridiculous thing is, there are only Estimated Operation Cost on each step, no Actual Operation Cost. I guess there are something wrong with optimizer because reuse same Execution Plan, but how can I tell which step wrong without Actual Operation Cost.

I'm new to using SSIS and have been reading and learning slowly how to use it. I'm trying to create an identical copy of our database for reporting. I've used the Import/Export wizard, but have had some issues with foreign keys and with sql_variant columns.
I've tried searching for anything but haven't had any luck as of yet. I guess I don't even know where to start or what to look for.

May 29, 2006I am getting the following message while creating SQL Database on my local machine in Visual Studio:An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Sever 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Sever does not allow remote connections.
