How Can I Get Vb6 To Update Offline Recordset When View Has Defined An Attribute As AdFldUnknownUpdatable?

Aug 21, 2006

hopefully, someone has already solved this problem

I have been assigned an application that maps data from access databases into a view in Sql Server 2005. A vb6 application does a select on the view. The recordset is then modified by the application, and eventually, the original tables will be updated with the new data. Some of the fields in the view are the result of calculations ( i.e. adding multiple varchar fields together to produce one complex varchar result ). Any of the fields that are calculated in the manner previously described have the adFldUnknownUpdatable bit set in the attributes of the recordset, and consequently, you get a -2147217887 error ( multiple-step operation .... ) when you try to change the value of the field in the recordset. Does anyone know how to get around this problem?

Migrating SqlServer2000-&&>2005 And Classic ADO: Problem With AddNew To Recordset, Related To AdFldUnknownUpdatable Attribute?

Mar 26, 2006

The application is running ADO (MDAC) version 2.81.1117.0.

The application gets an recordset created by SQLServer by an select statement. In this case the recordset is empty.

The application adds a record to the recordset by AddNew(). Works fine. But when assigning the first field (smalldatetime in database) I get ADO error -2147217887.

I have inspected the recordset and I found a difference between the working one from SQLServer2000 and the new one from SQLServer2005: The Attributes item for the fields in the recordset has the flag adFldUnknownUpdatable set in the working SQL2000 version but is not set from SQL2005.

The database on SQL2005 is copied from the SQL2000 system and attatched to the SQL2005 system. I Have checket that the compability flag for the database on the SQL2005 system is set to SQL2000 compability.

Get Column Alias From View AND Phisical Attribute

May 27, 2008

Hello Everyone,

I am creating a Metadata management application for a business intelligence platform on SQL Server 2005.

For this purpose, I've set out to consolidate all DB-object metadata (Databases, Tables, Columns, Views) into a single repository that business users can browse through. It has been fairly straightforward so far, but I've hit a wall in the views department.

In fairly simple terms, I want to know which physical columns are selected in a view, with the twist of also knowing the columns' alias. This seems to be impossible as far as I can tell, it is easy enough to get both of these independently, but I can't figure out how to connect an alias to an actual column.

(I prefer to use the metadata catalog views to the INFORMATION_SCHEMA as I need to know the object_id's)

Aliases are easy enough to obtain:

select object_id, column_id, name
from sys.columns
where object_id = object_id('SomeViewsName');

As are the 'physical' columns:
SELECT
t.object_id as TABLE_OID,
c.column_id as COLUMN_OID,
c.name
FROM
sys.views v
JOIN sys.sql_dependencies d
ON d.object_id = v.object_id
JOIN .sys.objects t
ON t.object_id = d.referenced_major_id
JOIN sys.columns c
ON c.object_id = d.referenced_major_id
AND c.column_id = d.referenced_minor_id
WHERE
d.class < 2 AND
v.name = 'SomeViewsName';

As I've said before, the problem is joining these two datasets. One of the problems associated with this is that the latter query also returns columns used in JOIN statements, even if they are not projected in the select part of the view definition.

Ultimately I'd like to get this result:

Alias used in View, physical table's object id, physical column's id

Am I missing something?

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Offline Command Hangs When I Try To Take Database Offline

Hi, I am relative newbie to SQLServer. When I try to take a user database offline, the query "hangs," with the query processing circle spinning. The Sharepoint 7 application is running on top of the Enterprise SQL Server 2005 db with several logins sleeping and awaiting commands. No errors are generated until I kill the offline command. Anyone have any ideas? Do I need to kill all the connections?

How To Get Identity Field Value After Recordset Update

May 19, 2004

I want to add a record and then get the automatically generated identifier(ReqChildID in this case). Is there a better way? Why won't this one work.

This is what I have:

rsRec.AddNew
rsRec("RequisitionID") = intReqNum
rsRec("CreatedBy") = cint(session("empno"))
rsRec("DateCreated") = Now
rsRec.Update
intItemId = rsRec("ReqChildID")
rsRec.Close

Forgive me if this has already been posted, but I couldn't find it.

[edit to add:]

rsRec is an ADODB.Recordset in case that wasn't clear.

Error Message With Recordset.Update

Feb 9, 2007

Hi,

I am converting a VB6 application to C# using ADO. I have the following code:

private ADODB.Connection cn = new ADODB.Connection();
private ADODB.Recordset rs = new ADODB.Recordset();

private connectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data source= " + stdDir;
strClientSQL = "SELECT * FROM Client ORDER BY casename, renldate, product, fundingcode";

cn.CursorLocation = ADODB.CursorLocationEnum.adUseClient;
cn.Open(Utilities.connectionString,null,null,0);

rs.CursorLocation = ADODB.CursorLocationEnum.adUseServer;
rs.Open(strClientSQL,cn, ADODB.CursorTypeEnum.adOpenStatic, ADODB.LockTypeEnum.adLockOptimistic,-1);
rs.Fields["CaseName"].Value = this.txtCaseName.Text;

rs.Fields["CaseNo"].Value = this.txtCaseNumber.Text;

rs.Update();

When I try to compile and run it I get the following error message:
"No overload for method 'Update' takes '0' arguments"

I am not sure if I need to enter information in the update command or do something else. This seems pretty straight forward but I can't figure out how to do it. Can someone please help me?

Thanks,

Mark

Measure Group Attribute Key Column Does Not Match Source Attribute

May 16, 2008

HI,

I had to change the key columns of a dimension attribute to fix an error. I did this in BIDS. The change was from a single key column to a composite key column. Now I am getting these error when I process the cube:

Measure group attribute key column x does not match source attribute ..

I looked at the cube XMLA definition under mesaure groups and it still shows a single key column with inherited binding. However, the BIDS does not give me an option correct this in any way. I have had to do this once before and the only option seems to be removing the dimension from the cube and add it back in. But that is very error prone since I lose any specific settings at the cube dimension level not to mention aggregations no longer include the dimension, etc.

Not seeing an alternative, I went through each measure group (I have 7) and changed the key columns manually in the XMLA and saved the cube. This worked, but I don't understand why BIDS automatically doesn't do it.

Is this a flaw in the BIDS or I should be missing something.

thanks
MJ

Recordset.update With SQL Native Client Doesn't Work

Dec 4, 2006

We recently migrated from SQL Server 7 to SQL Server 2005. Now there's a curious thing with some legacy applications. I have pasted some code below. Don't judge me, because like I said, it's legacy.

You can see, that I have two connection strings. One is commented and accessing via SQL Native Client. The other one is doing this through the old SQL Server driver. Funnily enough, when I use the new Native Client driver, the exception "Run-time error '-2147467259 (80004005)' [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Invalid attribute value" is thrown in the rsPorder2.Update line. With the old driver, this works just alright.

Is this a bug? Is there a way, to make the code run, because we don't want to search the whole application for other occurances, if not necessary.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
DD

Update Certain Fields From A Grid View ?

Sep 25, 2006

Hi all,I asked a similar question a few weeks ago but I didn't explain myself to well so I was hoping for some more input.I have created a webpage in Visual web developer that contains a gridview that points to an SQL table.All works well as far as searching the table and sorting.  The SQL table itself is Droped ( deleted ) and then re-created every 1 minute from a query to a linked DB2 database  so that we have a "live" table of our DB2 system but in SQL.....However,There is now a requirement to be able to ADD data to this SQL table. eg: a comments field.. from the website.My procedure for re-creating the SQL DB is now useless as any data added through the website would be lost when the table gets re-created.What is the best way for me to achieve a permanent table in SQL that gets updated from the Linked server DB2 but that I can also add comments from the front end (Website Gridview)..I'm assuming some sort of update query and a join to a seperate, permanent table that contains the comments?.Please help. Ray..
