How Can I Insert A Semicolon As User Data?
Sep 27, 2005
I'm working with an existing program that crafts an insert statement
from user input. The data is machine generated, though, and some
of it has semicolons. How can I "escape" those semicolons so that
I can insert them into the database? Does the ESCAPE key work
with the insert statement, too? Can I just replace the ";" with
some other character(s) to escape it? I'm not finding much in the
online help. Thanks!

Hi all......
I have an issue
There are 2 tables... source and target...
Data from source goes into target table under same field...
ISSUE IS -
Data from 'n' no. of records from source table goes into a single record in the target table with delimiter being a semi colon (;)...
where(n >=2)...
For example - if the source table has 'src1', 'src2' and 'src3' as the data then target table will have a single record with semicolon as delimiter as 'src1;src2;src3'
How do we compare the data under this particular field now...
Do we have to use a if then loop for identifying when the ; ends in target data...
kindly help by giving a example...
Thanks,
Avi.

Is it possible to allow a user to insert and update data in a table but prevent them from performing deletes against that same table? For auditing purposes I need to prevent the end users from being able to delete data.

I have a UDF called 'GetTable1()'. In this function, the return value are the rows selected from table 'Table1'.
But, before returning, I would like to check if the table is empty, and if it is then insert a dummy row into this table. How would I do this within a function?

Dim strSQLRead As String
Dim objCmd As New OleDbCommand
strSQLRead ="Select Quantity from tblCart Where (Productid=" & intProdidHold & ") AND (Cartid='" & strCartid & "')"

Ok, here's my setup. I've got a named instance in a SQL 2000 cluster. I only have dbo rights on my database, because it is a shared infrastructure. Here's my current web.config connection string (the meat, anyway):
When I'm at the office, this is my connection string, pretty normal:
connectionString="Data Source=ServerNameInstanceName;Initial Catalog=blah..."
But, when I connect through the VPN, I can't just connect through the named instance - I have a specific port. This is where things get odd.
First, if I try to connect through SQL Server Management Studio (2005), i get nothing. If I try to connect using "ServerNameInstanceName, (comma) Port Number" it connects, but not to my instance. I get a seperate set of databases that I believe are in the default instance. So, I changed the comma to a semicolon (;) - and it still connected to the same thing - connected to the database, but to the wrong set of databases. So, on a whim, I tried plunking my string, which was now "ServerNameInstanceName;(semicolon) PortNumber" into the SQL 2000 Tools and it worked in both Query Analyzer and in Enterprise Manager. So, I thought, I'll just slam this into my connection string and all will be well. No. I can't use a semicolon in my connection string, and I can't find an escape character to use. Double semicolons don't work, a comma doesn't connect me properly, double colons don't work, the JDBC brackets don't work {} - so I'm at a loss. I'm out of ideas. I've set up aliases, and those don't work earlier.
I'm using ASP.net 2 with VB & C# and Visual Studio 2005 Professional. Thanks for any help anyone can give on this!

Hello friends,
I am designing an ETL process in which I have a source column which contains names seprated by semicolon( i.e Rajat Kr Sharma;Mr Sammer;Mr Ravi;Mr Ankur Bhatnagar) in each row.
ETL process should create n records, one for each single name in destination table as n numbers of name apprear
in each row of source table.
The number of names can vary in each row of source table as per no. of delimited character semicolon.
So Can some one suggest me to lay out some plan and what controls of SSIS I should use?
Here I m giving the pictorial view of activity I'm trying to carryout.
Source Table Row

Changes to Destination Table

Hi, I'd like to know if there's a way to get sql server NOT to ignore the colon when performing a full text search (CONTAINS) for a string "sometext:". At this moment the query works, only the results are not narrowed to the ones containing the specified colon. I've read about this and I saw that these kind of characters (word breakers and stemmers) are ignored and want to know if there's a way to work around this (obviously performing well - so LIKE fails the test). Thanks

This SQL is meant to show the changes that will be made, when removing a selected user's email address from a batch.
However, when executed, each row is duplicated, and in the duplication, the semi-colon or comma isn't removed. For example, if I wanted to remove user "sam@mail.com"
The table results displayed would be:
Row 1:
BatchID: 50
ParamName:EmailTo
ParamValue: jack@mail.com;sam@mail.com;frank@mail.com
NewParamValue: jack@mail.com;frank@mail.com
Row 2:
BatchID: 50
ParamName:EmailTo
ParamValue: jack@mail.com;sam@mail.com;john@mail.com
NewParamValue: jack@mail.com;;frank@mail.com
Ideally, it should only display each row once, and not have the semicolon error. It seems to be a union error, because when I comment out the First and second union statements, it runs fine.
-- Delete email address from a.Batch
IF(@EmailAddress IS NOT NULL)
BEGIN
IF(LEN(@EmailAddress) > 0)
BEGIN
IF(@ShowOnly = 1)
[Code] ......

I can retrieve all the source data i need easily but when i come to insert it into the table variable i need to insert 1 record if its a single part or 2 records if its a twin part. I know could use a cursor but im sure there has to be an easier way !
Below is the code i have at the moment

declare @enddate as datetime
declare @Line as Integer
DECLARE @count INT

Here's a weird one:
We are setting up a job for the SQL Server Agent via SSMS. The Job Step Type is SSIS.
In the Job Step Properties window, on the Set values tab, you can enter Values to override your package variables - normally all well and good.
However in this particular case, the variable Value contains semicolons ( - it is a Connection String for an ODBC driver. Eg: Driver={Client Access ODBC Driver (32-bit)};system=MYSERVER;...
The behaviour for this Value is weird:
If the Value is not surrounded with double quotes ("), the job fails with "The command line parameters are invalid."
If the Value is surrounded with double quotes ("), the job will run as intended. The catch is: that entry and any subsequent "Set Values" entries disappear next time the Job Step Properties window is opened.
This looks like a bug with the parsing of those strings by the Job Step Properties window?
Or am I missing something?

I installed my asp.net 2.0 web application and sql express june editon on my windows 2003 server. When the application tries to reach the database i am getting the following error"Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed."I can understand that it has something to do with user right but more than that I am pretty lost. Can anyone translate this error for me and give me some tips on what do to.I checked first the user running the sql express service and saw it was the NETWORK SERVICE user. I changed it to be the local system account but that did not make any difference. The application is running just fine on my local computer(Win XP sp2). This one has SQL express April edition though.

Hi all
Recently i was asked to design and implement an On-line WebSite for a Shop Store.I decided to define some Category for this Shop's Products such as MP3-Players,Mobiles,Televisions,Monitors and so on....and then Assign each product to a certain Category.Something like Amazon.Com , So i designed my Category and Product Table as follow:
Category Table----------------CatID int Primary-KeyCatDesc varchar(50)
Product Table-------------ProductIDProductDescCatID
After that i noticed that each category has its own Fields and Property and sometimes somecategories have common Fields for example , Price ,Color are two Common Property or Fieldsfor all Categories that i mentioned earlier But , Size is a special property for only[Monitor] or [Television] Categories and isn't useable for [Mice] or [KeyBoard] categories for example. So i Added a table for Keeping each category's Fields as follow:
Category Fields Table---------------------FieldID intCatID intFieldDesc varchar(50)FieldType tinyint --> 0=Numeric 1=String 2=Boolean...
After that i should save each Field's Value somewhere for each product so i added thefollowing Table(Product-Field-Value Table) for this purpose:
Product-Field-Value Table-------------------------ProductIDFieldIDValue
So far every thing is ok But i've faced with a new issue!!!.As you have realized so far , each productbelongs to certain category and each category has its own Fields List , in the other hand one category maybe has only 3 to 6 Fields but another Category might has 10 or more fields,So my problem here is when user wants to Add new product to Databse ,how should i get the Field's value for each product in an ASPX page ?in the other hand i'm dealing with a dynamic structure as you can see, so how should i Render the appropriate User Entries for getting Values of each product dynamically and then Saving these values in the Database? what Asp.Net Components should i use for this purpose? Could anyone help me?
Thanks in advance.Kind Regards.

Hello, I'm new to the forum and new to SQL, ASP.NET, etc. I am creating an intranet site for my company in VS 2005 and have run into a very annoying problem that I can't seem to solve. I have tried Googling it and came up empty. I have a database in SQL Express 2005 and my website will be accessing several tables within the database. I can retrieve info just fine and I can update, delete, etc just fine using gridview or other prebuilt tools, but when I add a few text boxes and wire a button to the SqlDataSource.Insert() command, I get a new record that is full of null values except for the identity key I have set. The kicker is that I am also using a master page and when I duplicate the web page without the master page link, everything works just fine. The following snippets show what I'm doing:<InsertParameters><asp:FormParameter Name="Name" Type="String" FormField="txtName" /><asp:FormParameter Name="Location" Type="String" FormField="ddlLocation" /><asp:FormParameter Name="Issue" Type="String" FormField="txtProblem" /></InsertParameters>Of course I match the formfields to the text boxes, create an onclick event for my button, the sqldatasource is configured correctly, it just doesn't work with the master page no matter what I do. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I change to the connection string to localhost ( WindowsAurthentication) and it works so i conclude that the problem lies on the sql user access. However I had already ticks everything on object explorer > security > logins > my user properties > Server Roles & User Mapping. What should i do inorder to grant insert/create database access to my sql user? Thanks.

I have a create user wizard. On the created user event. I am calling a datasource.insert to insert the email, userid, and opt in to newsletter option into another table.
For some reason it is inserting the value twice into the database. I have checked possibilities for why this might be happening. I am pulling my hair out.
Any ideas?

How do I insert the UserName of the Logged in user into the DB field UserID. I created a web form page, and added a form view control set the page default to Insert Mode. The Page is used to insert data. I have a hidden field called UserID that I would like to capture the Logged in user. I have logged in to the default page with userID and password, added a new record, and the db table field UserID is empty. I have been trying to figure out what I am doing worng, but no luck, Please suggest the best way to do this. I have listed what I have done thus far?
I have added the login Control from Login and added it to the page as a hidden field thinking that I needed to have this field on the page to get this to work where you copy the value in the Loginname field to the useridTextbox on the formview1 insert template. I read on line where the method below is better. Please tell me what I am doint wrong.

I am having issues getting this to work. I have the user login to a page to
put in a request for vacation. When they login, I have a label that isn't
visible that is equal to their User.Identity.Name.
I select the user from the employee table where the username = the label User
Identity Name and pull in the emp_id which is the primary key that identifies
the user.
I need to insert the request into the request table with the emp_id from the
select statement, without showing the em_id on the screen. I tried using a
hidden field and assigning the emp_id as the value, but it isn't working.
Not sure if this is the best way to do this. Really new to ASP.NET 2.0 so I
really appreciate any help.
Thank you!

Is there a way to adjust a date and time depending on the users locale before inserting into the database?
Users login in and their country of residence is stored in the database on signup. My server is in the US and I want to reset part of the users db record when it's the end of the day in their country so I need to enter the date and time into the db plus or minus the time difference, is there a function written to do this already or would i need to write my own?

I'm using a legacy application built using VB5 and SQL Server 7. After recompiling it, and putting the database in SQL Server 2012. I want to access the current login user using the SQL function SUSER_SNAME().
This is the code.
Set rdoRes = goDatabase.Connection.OpenResultset("select suser_sname()")
But I'm unable to get the current user login in the application. If I write any other SQL statement instead of this, then it runs. But only this statement is not running. Is there any security reasons for this?
