I have a root domain and child domain.
After using ADMT to migrate the domain user or group into the root domain, when I use enterprise manager to try and change the permissions allocated to that domain user/group, i get the 'Error 15401 NT user or Group not found'.
This is a correct error as the user is now in the root domain, however sql (in sysxlogins) still thinks its in the child domain.
Is there a simpler way, other than collecting the users permissions, deleting the user from SQL then adding back in with the correct domainusername format, then adding the permissions back?
I tried renaming the 'name' in sysxlogins (not recommended) and while that worked, whenever I tried to add the migrated user to another database, the login name was missing and would not resolve.
I believe it is something to do with the SID not matching.
Any ideas on how to fix this ?

I didn't know exactly which forum to post this in, so if I need to post it into another one, please let me know. Also, I have absolutely no SQL or DB experience. I am learning as I go.
The Situation:
I created a virtual network for my company which included MS CRM, which uses SQL Server 2005. Everything was working fine until today. My company asked me to make a change to the domain name, as we are changing company names. I followed the processes through microsoft's documentation that I found online. The rename went fine. Since then, we can no longer access CRM. When I run the environment checks, it gets hung up on the SQL Server components. It says that it can't confirm the MSSQLSERVER service is running (it is) and it can't connect to the database. As best as I can tell, the database is looking for the old domain name, which doesn't exist. How do I edit or configure the existing database to reflect the new domain name. It's important to do this as we have data in that database that we need to access. Any help in this matter is very much appreciated!!!

Is it possible to rename Logins and users in SQL Server 6.5. I can find no provided way of doing this although the only references to the name I can find is the login name in syslogins table and the user name in sysusers (in each database). The system catalog diagram implies that all joins are done via the SUID field within each table. Can I simply update each entry to the new name and proceed? I have tried it on a test server and have seen no ill effects thus far. Anyone else tried this?

We have an Sql Server 2008R2 Clustered production instance by name 'ProdVir' configured in 2 nodes(Active-passive) withWIndows Server 2008 R2. We also have another clustered instance as disaster recovery by name 'VirDr' configured again in another 2 nodes of Windows Server 2008 R2. Every day morning there is mainatenace plan which backups all the database in production and another maintenace plan in the disaster recovery server 'VirDr' which restores the backups into the VirDr instance.
I would like to know that in an eventuality of a disaster in the clustered production instance of 'ProdVir'. could we rename the the instance VirDr(meant for disaster recovery) to ProdVir and also change the Ip addresses accordingly so that the application programs do not have to change the details for the datasource in the connection strings.

I have a client who we are upgrading from ms sql 7 to 2000. At the same time we are doing this, we are moving off an old domain, and old servers.
When I try to use DTS to move the whole database, it fails becaue the users don't exist on the new domain ( ie.. olddomainjay is not a user. That user is now newdomainjay).
What can I do to migrate the databases and not the permissions?

Any help will be appreciated.
To clarify few things I have no previous MS SQL experience, did some Oracle and MySQL work.
I will have to move one Win 2000 server with MS SQL 2005 running one database to our AD 2003 environment. I was wondering if anybody already went through that kind of scenario, and what was the procedure.
Thanks

Hi There
I am trying to find resources of comsiderations / steps to take when changing a sql server instatnce's domain, the name will be the same but it is being moved to a new domain.
One thing i have realised is that replciation must be completely removed and reconfigured , since the sunscriber / distributor are all going to the new domain.
replcation still obviously referencing the old domain.
But what are all the other things that may be affected. A link to an article with details of how to move a sql server 2005 instance to a new domain would be great i just cant find one.
Thanx

Our network guys created a new domain as part of their migration from NT4 to active directory. They are asking us to modify our sql servers (2000) to use the new domain accounts. For example domain1/user is now domain2/user. Once this is complete the old domain will be disabled. My question is how difficult is this to accomplish in SQL? SQL has startup accounts, logins, DTS packages, Scheduled jobs, maintenance plans, etc. It seems to me that this is a major effort? Any help on the do's and don'ts would be greatly appreciated. Any articles would be helpful too. I could sure benefit from anyone who has been down this path before.

Within our Exchange Environment we use Blackberry. Our Blackberry Server is using SQL Server 2005 Express. We're migrating from Exch 5.5 to Exch 2003 (new server for 2003). Now the new Exch Server is in our new Active Directory Domain to which is not named the same as our NT Domain for obvious reasons.
Anyway, after I decomission the 5.5 Exch Server, I want to rename the Blackberry Server and move it to the new domain.
Will SQL Server 2005 Express squak at me for doing this??
Thanks All

I have a server that belongs to domain 'a'. The server is neither a PDC or BDC.
This server has SQL Server 7 installed. I wanted security set up so the
Domain Administrator could select/update rows in the database and administer
the database as well as the local administrator of the Sql Server. From a
workstation the domain administrator can create tables but cannot insert rows.
From the Server in question the domain administrator can create tables and
insert rows. Why does it make a different what box the domain adminstator logs on to?

This is a two part question. We are currently using the ODBC method SQLConnect to connect to an existing DSN:
m_retcode = SQLConnect(
m_hDbc,
(SQLTCHAR*)datasource,
(SWORD)_tcslen(datasource),
(SQLTCHAR*)username,
(SWORD)_tcslen(username),
(SQLTCHAR*)password,
(SWORD)_tcslen(password) );
using a SQL user created for that purpose (and yes the password is encrypted elsewhere). I have had a request to be able to use a Windows domain account in the same setting however it does not appear that i can simply enter either "domainusername" or "username" (SQL Server and the login machine are in the same domain.
Is it possible to accomplish this with this function or should I use a different routine to obtain a connection? How would I accomplish this if I instead wanted to use integrated login?
The "client" is running Windows XP, 2000, 2003, or Vista (Business). The database server is running SQL 200 or 2005 on Windows 2003 Server (or possibly Windows 2000 Server).
Hope this description is not too murky.
Cheers,
Lyman Hurd

Hi everyone, We currently have a server running SQL server 2000 and 2005 instances on our domain. The servers are used for a couple of different applications. Our network manager is implementing a domain change in the next few months, but isn't familiar with SQL servers. I was wondering if anyone knew about any possible issues with changing the domain the database server machine is connected to. The computer name won't change, and neither will the server instances. Many thanks in advance for any ideas / help on this

Hi folks,
For the past couple of days, I have been trying to get my SQL Server to work with Distributed Views. I am created linked servers, linked server logins, set XACT Abort ON.
I am successful in running a select against the distributed view, but was unable to run an "INSERT"
When I try a simple insert, the query took 3:14 minutes. Then I get an error message like:
Server: Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: New transaction cannot enlist in the specified transaction coordinator. ]
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'SQLOLEDB' ITransactionJoin::JoinTransaction returned 0x8004d00a].
I have checked that MSDTC is running and configured under a domain account on both machines - running sQL 2000 and win2K
I have been unsuccessful still after tinkering for several days. I have checked my network configurations and noticed that when I try to ping the other machine by name, I don't get a response. I can only get a response to a ping when I enter the IP address directly.
Could this be a problem? Also, I noticed that for some strange reason, whenever I ping from either machine it is showing an external IP - always the same one no matter which computer name I try to ping. Something like 209.xxx.xxx.xxx instead of the 192.xxx.xxx.xxx that I expect.
Finally, I thought that problem was possibly due to incorrect Active Directory configuration. I tried to remove both machines from the domain by changing them to a workgroup "TEST" instead of the domain.
When I restarted the PC, I am unable to start SQL Server. It shows the Red Stop sign. When I try to start it, it gives an error like: Service could not start because one or more dependencies failed.
When I add the machine back to the domain, SQL server starts working on reboot.
Can anyone help me please.
Thanks.

Folks,
I have read the posts concerning login failures for the ASPNET user. I have a slightly different problem, as you can see from the title of this post.
My environment is a private domain that has two machines:
1) Windows 2000 server on which SQL Server is running. Let's call it FOO_SERVER.
2) Windows XP Professional on which I am running my IIS and .NET development environment. Let's call it FOO_WORK.
3) Let's call the domain, FOO_DOMAIN.
The user, ASPNET, is not a domain user, but a local user, so I do not know how to establish it as a valid login for SQL Server. But this is beside the point, anyway, as the error I am getting has nothing to do with the ASPNET user. It appears that a different username is being used to access SQL Server.
My connection string is:
"server=FOO_SERVER;database=pubs;Trusted_Connection=yes"
The error I receive is:
"Login failed for user FOO_DOMAINFOO_WORK$"
I am using the default settings in machine.config. Specifically <processModel> userName="machine" password="AutoGenerate" </processModel>
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
-Joel

The title says it all. Given that I have created a login for a domain group, and a database user for that login. What I want to do is retrieving the domain username for the active user. USER_NAME retrieves the database username, suser_name returns (of course) NULL as this is not a sql user.
The goal is to use domain group logins, while still allowing for logging what user performed which action.

Has anyone ever done this inthe past?

I have setup a SQL 2014 server with mixed authentication. Below is sequence.
1. Created a server. Added server to a domain & logged out.
2. RDP to the server using a local account. Installed SQL 2014. Kept the services to run using default NT Authority accounts during initial setup. SQL was installed in mixed mode (SQL & windows authentication). a specific 'sa' pwd was set.
3. After initial setup, I changed all SQL services Logon account to be respective domain accounts. Made sure all services restarted, up & running.
Now, for the same 'sa' SQL login account -
--> if I RDP to the server using local system admin & connect to SQL studio with 'sa' (SQL authentication) - it works.
but --> if I RDP to the server using my domain account (which is already an admin on SQL & windows), but connect SQL studio with the Same 'sa' (SQL authentication) - it fails & gives - unable to login 'sa'... ; standard error code : 18456.
Question : How can be the same 'sa' login, is acting different based on with what user context I RDP to the server ?

In an attempt to improve security for our web server/db server setup, we have a SQL Server 2005 server set for Windows authentication only and a web server (both behind a firewall together on a single local domain).
The web server is using IIS7, and the default NetworkService account to run the ASP.NET processes.
I've given the NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE account access to the database in question.
The SQL authentication fails, but the account failing is NOT the NetworkService account, but the <DOMAIN><COMPUTER>$ account.
Note that if I use identity impersonation with a specific domain account, I can get the app to work. However, I do NOT want to use impersonation, I want the default NetworkService account to work.
Does anyone know why IIS, which is supposed to be using NetworkService, is instead using the <DOMAIN><COMPUTER>$ account to connect to SQL, which is then failing?

Is SQL Server sensitive to Domain group name? Like "Domain Admin"?
I have user that belong to "myDomainDomain Admin" group. Group is in SQL as sysadmin but user cannot login using domain credentials. When I move that user to a different domain group which that group is in SQL again as sysadmin my user is able to login.
Environment: SQL 2008 Standard Edition.
