How Do I Escape A New Line Character Thats Been Stored In Sql Server
May 30, 2008
Not sure if this is the right forums to ask this question..
I have a website in which i have a text box that has multiline = true... So suppose if if the user enter absbsbcjd and then hits enter and then again enter jfkdjf in my database i been stored as abscbabc twoboxes (new line) and then jfdkf and then sometime later i am taking that plan name and sending it as a subject to an email but since it has a new line character in that field.. i get an error..
I tried searching for "escape character", "quotes", etc, but they didn't work.
I'm having troubling inserting data into my tables, if they have an apostrophe or double quotes. I know that MySQL's escape character is "", but I tried it for MS SQL and it didn't work. HOW DO I INSERT DATA INTO MY DB THAT HAS AN APOSTROPHE OR DOUBLE QUOTE? Thanks.
alter proc [ProGeneral_College_Structure] @Year nvarchar(4) as begin DECLARE @SQLStatement nvarchar(1000)
Set @SQLStatement = 'SELECT School AS Level1Code, DIVISIONS.Div AS Level2Code, DIVISIONS.ProgArea AS Level3Code, DIVISIONS.progName AS LevelName , ' + SUBSTRING(@Year,1,2) + '/' + SUBSTRING(@Year,3,2) + ' AS AcademicYearID FROM DIVISIONS WHERE (((DIVISIONS.[' + @Year + '])=1)) ORDER BY DIVISIONS.School, DIVISIONS.Div, DIVISIONS.ProgArea'
EXEC(@SQLStatement) end
It's something to do with the / concatenation I think, is it an escape character or something tried // obviously and CHAR(47). before I get comments I know it's dynamic sql and it's not great but I can't edit the divisions table so have to use a dynamic column.
I have a problem setting some variables in a package using the /SET option of dtexec. Specifically when the value I want to set contains a semi-colon. I get an error like:
Argument ""Package.Variables[User::Delim].Properties[Value];^;"" for option "set" is not valid.
I am guessing that I will have to escape the semi-colons somehow, but with what?
I am attempting to import a flat file and have come accross and issue that I do not know how to fix in SSIS. The issue is that some of the text fields use quoted identifiers. This is not an issue in itself. The problem is they also use quotes as escape character if quotes are on the field.
So I see instances of "" because inside the quoted field is a quote. How do i specify an escape character?

I have a need to have new line character in some data. I am trying to insert and retrieve the data with the new lines char in it, but it does work. I need the new line char in the data as I need to do some further processing whenever the new line starts. Any ideas on how I can achieve this? Thanks for the help.
This are the ways I have already tried, but does not work
I am writing a string to a text file using the below code:
DECLARE @MyText nvarchar(500) SET @MyText = 'type This is my text >> c:MyLog.txt' exec master..xp_cmdshell @MyText
What I want to know is. how do I write multiple lines to MyLog.txt without having to call out xp_cmdshell each time I want a new line in my log? Do I use newline character in @MyText like SET @MyText = 'type This is my text line 1</n>This is line2 >> c:MyLog.txt'
What is the escape sequence in a stored procedure?
Here is what I'm trying to achieve:
ALTER PROCEDURE Test ( @Func VarChar(1000) )
AS DECLARE @SQL VarChar(8000) SELECT @SQL = 'SELECT DISTINCT TNAME FROM TABLE WHERE FUNC LIKE ' + @Func
Now, my goal is to add single quote (') before @Func and another one after that. For eg, if @Func is "Test", I want my query to be SELECT DISTINCT TNAME FROM TABLE WHERE FUNC LIKE 'Test'
and NOT SELECT DISTINCT TNAME FROM TABLE WHERE FUNC LIKE Test
I have a stacked bar chart which i notice a vertical line char. how can i removed this vertical line? I already modified the properties under smart labels under calloutlineanchor, calloutlinestyle, calloutstyle to None but still getting this vertical lines. another things is the data label as you can see in the the first column the 1.8% should be place under the gray color but its already shown before the orange color.

Any better way to query SQL 2012 to display the code of a stored proc to a single line. I'm trying to write a script to insert the contents of the procs between my devestprod environments. So people can query a single table for any proc that is different between environments. At the moment I am using the syscomments view and the text column but the problem here is if you get a lengthy proc it cuts it up into multiple rows.
I can get around it by converting the text to a varchar(max) and outer joining the query, but as you can see by my code below I have to try and guess what the maximum number of rows I'm going to get back for my largest proc. If someone adds a new one that returns 8 rows I'm going to miss it with this query.
I have a table like this below and it doesn't only contain English Names but it also contain Chinese Name. CREATE TABLE Names (FirstName NVARCHAR (50), LastName NVARCHAR (50)); I tried to view the column using SQL Query Analyzer, It didn't display Chinese Character. I know that SQL Server 2005 is using UCS-2 Encoding and Chinese Character uses Double Byte Character Set (DBCS) Encoding. I want to read the FirstName and LastName columns and display in Window Form Data Grid and ASP.NET Grid View. I tried to use this code below and it didn't work. It convert some of the English Name to Chinese Character and it display the chinese character and some still in the original unreadable characters. Does anybody know how to read those character from SQL Table and display the correct Chinese Character without converting the English Name into Chinese also? Thanks
int codePage = 950; StringBuilder message = new StringBuilder(); Encoding targetEncoding = Encoding.GetEncoding(codePage); byte[] encodedChars= targetEncoding.GetBytes(str); . message.AppendLine("Byte representation of '" + str + "' in Code Page '" + codePage + "':"); for (int i = 0; i < encodedChars.Length; i++) { message.Append("Byte " + i + ": " + encodedChars); }
message.AppendLine(" RESULT : " + System.Text.Encoding.Unicode.GetString(encodedChars)); Console.Writeline(message.ToString());
Select * From Users Where account = @account And password = @password GO
When calling this sp from my app (VS2005) it works fine for most passwords. However it fails if the password contains a plus sign e.g. tXke4572Wd+IbRmjmcGexw==
If I use a View to test this password then the password is split up as 'tXke4572Wd' + 'IbRmjmcGexw==' I assume that SQL server does the splitting but correct me if I'm wrong.
How can I get this sp to work with passwords containing plus signs (or any other characters).
I have a stored procedure with a input parameter ( xml block).
sp: spGetAddr @xmlText
the style of parameter @xmlText looks like
<Param RestricBy="UserName IN ('Mayá', 'Bob')"/>
If I use non-basic ASCII character, just like 'á' in the parameter, the execution fails and I get 'The error description is 'An invalid character was found in text content.''
But this kind of special characters should be allowed in the name column of the database table.
If I use the htlm code 'á" to replace 'á' in the parameter, then the execution of the stored procedure is fine. but how can I change all of the possible sepcial characters?
If somebody knows how to handle this issue, please help me. I'm pre-appreciated for all the idea and suggestion!
I need to execute a dts package from a stored procedure. I can call up the command prompt, enter the dts command, and it executes perfectly. Here is what I am attempting to do from the stored procecure:
When a self-developed CLR stored procedure throws an Exception and the Exception is caught in the code and for example logged, there only are class and method names in the stack trace lines, but not the line numbers. Can the line numbers somehow be included in the stack trace?
I'm not familiar with .NET framework stack traces, but when I tried to find out more information I hit concepts like PDB files, are such things somehow needed to enable line numbers in stack traces?
Hello,Is it possible to EXEC stored procedure from a query?I want to execute stored procedure for every line of SELECT resulttable.I guess it's possible with cursors, but maybe it's possible to make iteasier.Give an example, please.Thank you in advance.Hubert
I have an extremely annoying problem when debugging stored procedures in SQL Server 2014 with SSDT or SSMS. When calling a SP thru EXECUTE in Debug mode, 9 out of 10 SPs are traced with a wrong yellow arrow-pointer to the line currently reached.
The offset is between 6 to 15 lines downward. Tracing itself and update of the "Locals"-view works as expected. All SPs contain comments also before the Create Procedure statement. The SP shown when tracing show exactly the same content as the stored SQL in the SSDT project under work incl. Create procedure and all comments.
The picture here show the first line selected after the debugger has traced into the SP. The first line really executed with "Next" will be SET NOCOUNT ON.
If this does not turns out as my fault and some of you would support that, I would like to post this to SQL Connect.
Hi, for some AP issue, the file I upload must be without the line feed/carriage return in the last line. for example:
original fixed-length file (exported from SSIS) line NO DATA 1 AA123456 50 60 2 BB123456 30 40 3 CC123456 80 90 4 <-- with line feed/carriage return in the last line
The file format that AP request. The file only has 3 records, so it should end in the third line. line NO DATA 1 AA123456 50 60 2 BB123456 30 40 3 CC123456 80 90
Should I use script component to do it ? I am new for VB . Anyone would help me ?
I need the Trend line for the following data in Line chart they are the following data. The following are the graph are my output and i need the trend line for these Key_gap value.
This is the link [URL] ....
I need the same trend line for the Bar-Chart in SSRS 2005.
I hope I'm posting this in the correct forum (forgive me if I'm not) since I'm not sure if this is an issue with inserting an item into a db or the processing of what I get out of it. I wrote a basic commenting system in which someone my post a comment about something written on the site. I wanted to keep it very simple, but I at least want the ability for a user to have newlines in their comment without having to hardcode a <br /> or something like that. Is there a way for me to detect a newline if someone, for example, is going to their next paragraph? Let me know if you need a better explanation. Thanks in advance!
