SELECT With UNION And DATEDIFF Does Not Work On SQL Server Compact Edition

Jan 24, 2008

Hi there,

i've tried using the SELECT SQL sentence on PPC with UNION and INNER JOIN in combination with DATEDIFF function which works fine on ordinary SQL but obviously does not work on compact edition. Is there some workaround?

SQL sentence that works:

Code Snippet

SELECT * FROM
(
SELECT 'O' Type, O.Name , OC.Name Contact, Birthday FROM OutletContact OC
INNER JOIN Outlet O ON OC.OutletID=O.OutletID
UNION
SELECT 'W' Type, W.Name,WC.Name Contact, Birthday FROM WholesalerContact WC
INNER JOIN Wholesaler W ON W.WholesalerID=WC.WholesalerID
) S
WHERE Birthday IS NOT NULL AND (DATEDIFF(day,GETDATE(),Birthday) BETWEEN 0 AND 14)

Thanks for any hint or solution to my problem,

Gorazd

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Using Union ALL Or Union Kills Performance On Stored Proc

Jun 12, 2014

SQL Server 2008 r2...

I have a query which does 3 selects and Union ALLs each to get a final result set. The performance is unacceptable - takes around a minute to run. If I remove the Union All so that the result sets are returned individually it returns all 3 from the query in around 6 seconds (acceptable performance).

Any way to join the result sets together without using Union All.

Each result set has exactly the same structure returned...

Query below [for reference]...

WITH cte AS (
SELECT A.[PoleID], ISNULL(B.[IsSpanClear], 0) AS [IsSpanClear], B.[SurveyDate], ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY A.[PoleID] ORDER BY B.[SurveyDate] DESC) rownum
FROM[UT_Pole] A
LEFT OUTER JOIN [UT_Surveyed_Pole] B ON A.[PoleID] = B.[PoleID]

UNION Statement Doesn't Work

Jul 20, 2005

Hi,I have a database stored in MS SQL 2000 and an application written inVB5, which connects the database via JET/ODBC.I have a problem with the UNION statement.When I run a simple query like:"SELECT field1 FROM table1 UNION SELECT field2 FROM table2"I get the following error:"Runtime error 3078 - The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot find theinput table or query 'select field1 from table1'. Make sure it existsand that its name is spelled correctly."I can run the queries separately "SELECT field1 FROM table1" and "SELECTfield1 FROM table2", so that I'm sure table and field names are correctand I have permission to access them.Both field1 and field2 are the same type (int).If I run the query in MS SQL Query Analyzer, it works fine.It doesn't work only when I run it from VB/JET/ODBC.Has anyone already had this kind of problem?Any help will be highly appreciated!Thank you so much for the attention.--Posted via http://dbforums.com

Query Works Fine Outside Union, But Doesn't Work .. .

Mar 31, 2004

hi all

I have the following query which works fine when it's executed as a single query. but when i union the result of this query with other queries, it returns a different set of data.

any one know why that might be the case??

select top 100 max(contact._id) "_id", max(old_trans.date) "callback_date", 7 "priority", max(old_trans.date) "recency", count(*) "frequency" --contact._id, contact.callback_date

where contact.phone_num is not null
and contact.status = 'New Contact'
group by contact._id
order by "recency" desc, "frequency" desc

i've included the union query here for completeness of the question

begin
declare @current_date datetime

UNION For Columns Of CLOB Data Type Does Not Work

May 10, 2007

I have two tables Encounter & Encounter_History. They have same columns. One column is of type CLOB. My requirement is to retrieve all the distinct records from both the tables with order by a date column. But problem is, UNION does not work in case of CLOB data type.

I know it will work if I use UNION ALL, but it returns duplicate records.

Please give me suggestion, how to solve this problem.

For example: The following query does not work since column1 is a CLOB data type

select column1 from table1
union
select column1 from table2

PB Using UNION ALL With VB6 And SQL-server

I've got some error when I'm using the UNION ALL function. This error appears:
"incorrect syntax towards the key word ' union' "

Here is the code in VB6 :

" GOpenLocalDb (FOR_READ) ' open the database

SQLStmt = "select * from ol_table_temp"
SQLStmt = SQLStmt & " where [Subject_no] = " & dlr_subject & " "
ord$ = SQL_Order()
SQLStmt = SQLStmt & ord$

'dalafouzos: 24/09/2002 I added the lines below to include the DLR entries in the ol_old table
SQLStmt = SQLStmt & " union all select * from ol_table_old where [Subject_no] = " & dlr_subject & " "
ord$ = SQL_Order()
SQLStmt = SQLStmt & ord$

'GOpenLocalDb (FOR_READ) ' open the database
Set DLRset = New ADODB.Recordset
DLRset.CursorLocation = adUseClient
DLRset.Open SQLStmt, g_objConn, adOpenKeyset, adLockReadOnly, adCmdText "

when the error appears the value of SQLStmt is :

"select * from ol_table_temp where [Subject_no] = 1020 Order by [Date] DESC, [Time] DESC union all select * from ol_table_old where [Subject_no] = 1020 Order by [Date] DESC, [Time] DESC "

Hi,I'm coming back to Sql Server after 4 years away, using other RDBMS,and there's a few things I'm struggling to remember how to do (if Icould do them in the first place...)Main amongst those is EXCEPT syntax.In DB2, if I have two sets of data and I want to exclude the second setfrom the first, I can do:SELECT col1, col2, col3, ... colNFROM table1EXCEPTSELECT col1, col2, col3, ... colNFROM table2;But SQL Server balks at this. Linked Server SQL UNION ALL Problem

Apr 12, 2008

Hi-

I'm importing an Excel spreadsheet into SQL Server using the spreadsheet as a linked server. I've written the following query to do so:

Use TESTDB
go

SELECT * INTO VTAble FROM LINKSER...[DIST1$]
UNION ALL
SELECT * FROM LINKSER...[DIST2$]
UNION ALL
SELECT * FROM LINKSER...[DIST3$]
UNION ALL
SELECT * FROM LINKSER...[DIST4$]
UNION ALL
SELECT * FROM LINKSER...[DIST5$]
UNION ALL
SELECT * FROM LINKSER...[DIST6$]
UNION ALL
SELECT * FROM LINKSER...[DIST7$]

.... and it continues for 28 tables.

The spreadsheet tables are suposed to be identical, however I receive this error:

Msg 205, Level 16, State 1, Line 2

All queries combined using a UNION, INTERSECT or EXCEPT operator must have an equal number of expressions in their target lists.

I'm guessing that in a couple places in the spreadsheet their is some variance in the data. I've experimented with running the query without SELECT statements for certain tables and have identified that there is something wrong with those tables. Is there a more systematic way I can locate the spreadsheet errors?

SQL Server 2014 :: Union All Statement Hangs Engine?

Sep 9, 2014

I have TSQL query using UNION ALL. First subset returns 92 rows, second subset return 0 (ZERO) rows. Now if I execute them separately they execute subsecond. If I put UNION ALL between them then it hangs forever exactly on 88s row.

I understand I need to provide execution plans, actual queries etc but before going into all this details, why on earth even in theory UNION ALL with empty result will result in a hang of the first subset?

Based on estimated execution plan 2 subqueries are performed in parallel and then CONCATENTION is being used which shall result with just first subset immediately displayed in result.

Estimated execution plan attached, I can not get actual execution plan because query never completes.

SQL Server 2014 :: UNION Vs PIVOT For De-flattening SOME Columns Of A Partially Flat Table

Jan 23, 2015

We have a table with 500+ columns. The data is non-normalized, i.e. there are four groups of fields for for "people", followed by data that applies to all people in the row (a "household").For ad-hoc queries, and because I wanted to index columns within each person (person 1's age, person 2's age, etc.), I used UNION:

SELECT P1Firstname AS FirstName, P1LastName as LastName, P1birthday AS birthday, HouseholdIncome, HouseholdNumber of Children, <other "household" columns>
UNION
SELECT P2Firstname AS FirstName, P2LastName as LastName, P2birthday AS birthday, HouseholdIncome, HouseholdNumber of Children, <other "household" columns>

I could get at least the P1... P2... P3... columns with PIVOT, but then I believe I'd have to JOIN back to the row anyway for the "household" columns. Performance of UNION good, but another person here chose to use PIVOT instead.I can' find any articles on PIVOT vs. UNION for "de-flattening".

SQL Server 2012 :: Have Conditional Join / Union Based On Parameters Passed To Stored Procedure

I am writing a stored procedure that takes in a customer number, a current (most recent) sales order quote, a prior (to most current) sales order quote, a current item 1, and a prior item 1, all of these parameters are required.Then I have current item 2, prior item 2, current item 3, prior item 3, which are optional.

I added an IF to check for the value of current item 2, prior item 2, current item 3, prior item 3, if there are values, then variable tables are created and filled with data, then are retrieved. As it is, my stored procedure returns 3 sets of data when current item 1, prior item 1, current item 2, prior item 2, current item 3, prior item 3 are passed to it, and only one if 2, and 3 are omitted.I would like to learn how can I return this as a one data set, either using a full outer join, or a union all?I am including a copy of my stored procedure as it is.

Use TOP With UNION

Jul 14, 2004

Hi

I just found out that I can do an ORDER BY clause on entire records set retrieve from a query that combines several sub queries with UNION from different tables with the same structure... so this is great to know, BTW, is this a new feature of MSSQL 2K ? I don't recall being able to do this in MSSQL 7 or 6.5.

Anyway, the main question is, can I use the TOP command in a query that has UNION in it?? Meaning, there are two queries (or more) from two tables (or more) and I need to fetch the top 10 records by an ORDER BY clause from the combined results, when I try to add each sub query TOP 10 the results are not correct at all, when I try to add TOP 10 only to the first query hoping that the analyzer will refer to the whole query, it's selecting TOP 10 from the first query and combines it with all the records from the others...

So, can anyone help? I hope the problem is understood.

Thank you,
Inon.

UNION Vs UNION ALL

Dec 15, 2006

Just a pet peeve....

From BOL:

By default, the UNION operator removes duplicate rows from the result set.
If you use ALL, all rows are included in the results and duplicates are not
removed.

Why is it assumed that one would want the duplicates removed by default?
Isn't that what SELECT DISINCT is for?
