How To Access Output Column Length Within Script Component?
Mar 7, 2007
My script component defines a (DT_WSTR, 450) output column named keyword. How can I access its length within the script, instead of hard-coding 450 as a constant?
My feeble attempts to tease this out through Visual Studio got me this far:
Output0Buffer.keyword.GetType.GetProperty("Length").GetValue(
but now I'm stuck. Also, if it matters, this is an asynchronous transformation component.
Thanks!

To simulate problem do follows:
1. Add Script source component.
2. Add 2 string output collumns: F1 length 50, F2 length 110
3. Add Union All component connected to Script source component
4. Add Script transformation component connected to Union All component
5. Mark F1 and F2 as input collumns
6. In the Input and Output section of the script transformation component check that length of the fields is 50 and 110 correspondingly
7. Edit Union All component: change Union All Input 1 to <ignore> for Output collumns F1, and F2; change Union All Input 1 to F2 for F1 and F1 for F2; change back <ignore> for F1, <ignore> for F2; set back F1 for F1, F2 for F2; Click OK to save
8. In the Input and Output section of the script transformation component check that length of the both fields is 110 now.
So, be careful to select output columns values in Union All component. If you choose wrong field by accident, and replaced it with correct one straight away, the length of output column could be stored not as you expect an need.

Hello,
I have an ODBC connection manager to a Progress database. In that database there is a column declared as a string of 10 characters long.
However, some data in this column is actually up to 15 characters long.
This makes my DataReader Source fail everytime I try to run my package because it sets the output column like this :
Datatype : Unicode string [DT_WSTR]
Length : 10
Is there any way to solve this without changing the datatype in the Progress database (that is beyond my control) ?
tanks in advance ...

Hi,
I have created a program that imports a csv into the sql server. but during that import I need to track all the errors that occured for some malformed rows. I think I need to use the error output collection of the dataflow components to track the errors. I figured out that every dataflow component has a error output collection along with the data output collection. I want to write those error outputs into a separete database. So, I have created a SQL server data destination component and created a path between derived columns error output and it input collection. But it is not working as expected. can any body help on this?
or can anyone give me any example how to use/handle error output collection in SSIS?
I will appreciate all kind of suggestions.
thanks

Would anyone happen to have any pointers or know of any good code examples to either programmatically change the type of an input column when it is passed through the component, or add a new column to the output? I am extracting data from an Oracle database which is in Julian date format (represented within SSIS as a DT_NUMERIC column) and I need to to either transform the input column holding it into a date column, or to dynamically add a new output column holding the transformed data.
Many thanks

I'm writing a custom source component that reads data from a SharePoint list with dynamic mapping to output columns. It's my first custom component and it's based on several samples and tutorials from Internet
Output columns are not created by the component itself, they must be added by user at design time. The component makes dynamically an association between SharePoint fields and available output columns at run-time (based on an mapping table).
I made a very basic skeleton and I encounter a problem when I add a column to output: it has no datatype and when I try to set one I have an the error Property value is not valid, The component xxxxxx does not allow setting output column datatype properties.

Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline
Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.Wrapper
Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Wrapper

I have a data flow that consists of
OLE DB source which calls a stored proc that returns a result set
data conversion
Excel destination
I am in design mode in Business Intelligence studio. My excel destination (with an Excel Connection) shows no sheet name though I have an execute SQL task before the data flow to create the excel table called SHEET1. Needless to say, there are no output columns visible to do any mappings. I did go to the ExcelConnection to set the OpenRowset Property to SHEET1 but it seems to have no effect.
I can do the export in SQL Server Management studio and that works fine, but it is basic and does not meet my requirements. I have to customize the package to allow dynamic Excel filenames based on account names and have to split my result set into multiple excel sheets because excel 2003 has a max of 65536 rows per sheet. Also when I use the export wizard, I have the source as a table and eventually the source has to be a stored proc with input parms.
What am I missing or doing wrong? Thanks in advance

is there any way or a tool to identify if in procedure the Parameter length was declarated less than table Column length ..
I have a table

CREATE PROCEDURE SpFindNames ( @KeyName VARCHAR(40) )
AS
BEGIN
SELECT KeyName FROM TEST001
WHERE KeyName = @KeyName

KeyName = @KeyName
Here table Column with 100 char length "KeyName" was compared with SP parameter "@KeyName" with length 40 char ..
IS there any way to find out all such usage on the ALL Procedures in the Database ?

Hi,
I am sending the output of a query to a file and unfortunately every row is containing only a certain number of characters. My query has rows having length of 1500 characters for each row. When I get the query and send it to a file I am seeing only the first 250 characters for each row instead of 1500 characters.
I will be grateful if anyone can help me suggesting a solution for this problem.
I appreciate your help in advance.

Sravan.

I have found not very good behavior of Union All Data Flow Component.
I have Script component and about 30 Union All Data Flow Components. I have string field named 'MyField'. Legth of the field is 15 characters. The field appears first in Script component (defined as 'MyField' Output collumn) and present in all Union All Data Flow Components. I need to change field length from 15 to 10. In Script Transformator Editor of Script component I changed 'MyField' Output collumn Length property value set it to 10. But length of the field remains 20 in all Union All Data Flow Component downstream and no errors no warnings appears. To fix this i recreated (deleted and added again) 'MyField' in all Union All 30 Data Flow Components.
If extend length from, say, 15 to 20 in the first of Union All Data Flow Components error sign appears
"Error 1 Validation error. Data Flow Task: Union All [22]: The metadata for "input column "MyField" (144)" does not match the metadata for the associated output column."
and only recreation of the field in all Union All Data Flow Components can help to fix it.
May be someone knows other solution to fix such behavior?

I need to write data into a fixed column length file and was wondering the best (most efficient) way to tackle this. For example, the first few pieces of the report I'm working on now would be:
PacketID - Starting position 1, Field length 9
TransactionID - Starting position 10, Field length 9
Group number - Starting position 19, field length 10
PID/SSN - Starting position 29, field length 10
For the PID/SSN, if I have a PID it'll be 10 digits and fill the field length, if I don't I use SSN which is only 9 digits and enter a space as the 10th digit. Obviously if I don't have certain pieces of information I'll just need spaces of the specified length to satisfy the file format. I'm using SQL 2005. Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Hi Guys,
I have a Data Flow which consist in a Flat File Source connected to a Derived Column that is connected to an Ole DB Destination
In the same Data Flow i have an script source task which i want to connect to the same Ole DB Destination mentioned before.
I cannot do that because it says that the destination component does not have any available imputs for use in creating a path.
I know the Script Source Task has an Output Column because i verified it.
Is it possible to connect a flat file source AND a script source to the same Ole DB Destination?

I am working with the Data Flow Task Script Component for the first time. I have created a second Output. In my script I add rows to this output.
I have found that Ssis does not release those rows to the second Output until it has processed all of the incomine pipeline records. This will not work for me as there are going to be a few million records coming down the pipe, so I need the Script Component to as soon as possible release these records downstream for insert into the destination component Ole Db component.
Any help would be greatly appreciated?

For the Custome source Component ErrorOutput, should I go for asynchronous / synchronous Output.
If i go for synchronous output
// Create the error output.
IDTSOutput90 errorOutput = ComponentMetaData.OutputCollection.New();
errorOutput.IsErrorOut = true;
errorOutput.Name = "ErrorOutput";
errorOutput.SynchronousInputID = What Id is required here;
errorOutput.ExclusionGroup = 1;
Is it the IDTSOutput90 InPut.ID / OutPut.ID which should be assigned.

HI,
I have a script component in my SSIS solution that transforms a URL that points to a picture to an URL that points to a thumbnail of that picture.
I've added an output called Picture to the component, and an outputcolumn called ThumbnailUrl, the code in the component is as follows:
PictureBuffer.AddRow()
PictureBuffer.ItemID = Row.ItemID
PictureBuffer.Url = Row.CopyoffotText
PictureBuffer.ThumbnailUrl = Row.CopyoffotText.Replace("-220.jpg", "-68.jpg")
VS then gives the following error: "Name 'PictureBuffer' is not declared"
What did I miss?

I am working on an OLAP modeled database.
I have a Lookup Transformation that matches the natural key of a dimension member and returns the dimension key for that member (surrogate key pipeline stuff).
I am using an OLE DB Command as the Error flow of the Lookup Transformation to insert an "Inferred Member" (new row) into a dimension table if the Lookup fails.
The OLE DB Command calls a stored procedure (dbo.InsertNewDimensionMember) that inserts the new member and returns the key of the new member (using scope_identity) as an output.
What is the syntax in the SQL Command line of the OLE DB Command Transformation to set the output of the stored procedure as an Output Column?
I know that I can 1) add a second Lookup with "Enable memory restriction" on (no caching) in the Success data flow after the OLE DB Command, 2) find the newly inserted member, and 3) Union both Lookup results together, but this is a large dimension table (several million rows) and searching for the newly inserted dimension member seems excessive, especially since I have the ID I want returned as output from the stored procedure that inserted it.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Hi all,
I saw a couple of other posts here on this topic, but none quite got to my issue.
I'm trying to add error output to a custom source component (not a script, a custom component). The samples all seem to deal with transform components, and my issues seem to be unique to source components.
I have the following code related to error handling ...
Public Overloads Overrides Sub ProvideComponentProperties()
...
Dim output As IDTSOutput90 = ComponentMetaData.OutputCollection.New
output.Name = OUTPUTCOLUMNNAME
output.ExternalMetadataColumnCollection.IsUsed = True
ComponentMetaData.UsesDispositions = True
output.ErrorRowDisposition = DTSRowDisposition.RD_NotUsed
output.ErrorOrTruncationOperation = "Something got truncated or blew up"
Dim errorOutput As IDTSOutput90 = ComponentMetaData.OutputCollection.New
errorOutput.Name = ERRORCOLUMNNAME
errorOutput.IsErrorOut = True
...
End Sub
Public Overloads Overrides Sub ReinitializeMetaData()
Dim output As IDTSOutput90 = ComponentMetaData.OutputCollection(OUTPUTCOLUMNNAME)
Dim outColumn As IDTSOutputColumn90 = output.OutputColumnCollection.New
outColumn.Name = strName
outColumn.SetDataTypeProperties(DataType.DT_I4, 0, 0, 0, 0)
Dim metadataColumn As IDTSExternalMetadataColumn90 = output.ExternalMetadataColumnCollection.New
metadataColumn.Name = outColumn.Name
metadataColumn.DataType = outColumn.DataType
metadataColumn.Precision = outColumn.Precision
metadataColumn.Length = outColumn.Length
metadataColumn.Scale = outColumn.Scale
metadataColumn.CodePage = outColumn.CodePage
outColumn.ExternalMetadataColumnID = metadataColumn.ID
outColumn.ErrorRowDisposition = DTSRowDisposition.RD_NotUsed
outColumn.ErrorOrTruncationOperation = "Something Truncated!"
outColumn.TruncationRowDisposition = DTSRowDisposition.RD_NotUsed
Dim errorOutput As IDTSOutput90 = ComponentMetaData.OutputCollection(ERRORCOLUMNNAME)
Dim errorColumn As IDTSOutputColumn90 = errorOutput.OutputColumnCollection.New
errorColumn.Name = outColumn.Name
errorColumn.SetDataTypeProperties(DataType.DT_I4, 0, 0, 0, 0)
...
End Sub
The confusions I have are:
a) the stock advanced properties editor (I haven't provided a custom one) doesn't seem to "realize" that I have an error output, so provides no method to configure. I am believing it would need to know which Output columns can have their error/truncation redirected. I'd have thought setting ErrorRowDisposition on my output column would have been enough to trigger this ??
b) since I don't have any means of configuring, not surprisingly, when I try to connect my error output, designer complains that, "Ths error output cannot receive any error rows. This occurs for several reasons: Input columns or output columns are not yet defined. Error handling is not supported by the component. Error handling is not configured for the component."
c) UsesDispoistions would seem to be appropriate only for a transform component
Thanks for reading, and appreciate any help or pointers.
Bill

Wanted to enquire how this is done. Tried doing it in the setUsageType method I have overwritten but only allows description to be changed. Basically need to change "Name".
Best option would be to change it instantly when a user selects a column from the inputs in the custom component, ie. it changes the Output Alias to a desired value. (Input tab in advanced editor)
All this is being done in a custom component which I would like to be synchronous, can achieve a similar result asynchronously.
Thanks

Hi Guys,
I created a SSIS custom component, transformation (Asynchronous) with one Input collection and 2 output collections.
The SSIS Package which includes the Component I created works well in the Business Intelligence Studio, but when the same Package is run in the 'Execute Package utility' It fails to run. ( when you Double click on the dtsx file)
The cause of the failiure is
public override void PrimeOutput(int outputs, int[] outputIDs, PipelineBuffer[] buffers)
method receives only one output buffer when executed using the 'Execute Package Utility' { outputs = 1 , buffer.Length = 1 } ( when executed in the BI studio, the method receives parameters of both the output buffers that I expect { outputs = 2 , buffer.Length = 2 } )
The property ComponentMetaData.OutputCollection.Count = 2 as well. Yet the PrimeOutput method provides only 1 buffer.
The Validation Succeeds on both instances, which I assume means that Meta Data is Provided Properly.
What would be the reason for the same pakage to run in 2 different ways like this,
What might I have missed out to do, to make the package run in different ways on 'Business Intelligence Studio' and 'Execute Package Utility'
Thanks a lot
Below are some of the lines from the ProvideComonentProperties Method which deals with the output Collection, Isn't this sufficient for the PrimeOutput to provide 2 output buffers?
ProvideComponentProperties()
public override void ProvideComponentProperties()
{
RemoveAllInputsOutputsAndCustomProperties();
base.RemoveAllInputsOutputsAndCustomProperties();
base.ProvideComponentProperties();
//other function calls
IDTSOutput90 output1 = ComponentMetaData.OutputCollection[0];
output1.Name = "Output1";
output1.Description = ".......................";
extracted.SynchronousInputID =0;
IDTSOutput90 output2 = ComponentMetaData.OutputCollection.New();
output2.Name = "Output2";
output2.Description = "..........................";
output2.SynchronousInputID = 0;
//other function calls
}

I'm having a tad bit of trouble getting output from an asynchronous component that I've written and am looking for some insight.
This component takes in a name string passed from upstream and parses the name components into standardized output fields. I'm using an asynchronous component because if the name string contains two names ("Fred & Wilma Flintstone") I'm outputting one row for Fred and one for Wilma. I've gotten it to run and with debugging have observed what appeared to me to be proper execution, but zero rows are flowing out of it.
In my ProvideComponentProperties method, I add the three fields and there associated metadata to the OutputColumnCollection. Is this method where this should occur? It's before the PrimeOutput method, so I didn't know if I should be creating the output columns in ProcessInput (i.e., after the output buffer is provided by PrimeOutput.)
In ProcessInput, I'm using AddRow for each input row and another if it contains a second name, setting the value for each index using the buffer's SetString method, to no avail. I can observe it to this point, but then don't know what's in that output buffer (if I'm using the wrong buffer index value, etc)
Thanks.

I'm trying to create a fairly simple custom transform component (because I've read that's the easiest one to create) which will take one column from a flat file source and based on the first row create the output columns.
I'm actually trying to write a component that will solve the now well known problem with parsing CSV files in SSIS. I have a lot of source files and all have many columns so a component that can read in the first line from the CSV file and create the output columns automatically will save me lots of time when migrating the old DTS packages.
I have the basic component set up but I'm stuck when trying to override the OnInputPathAttached method because I don't know how to use the inputID to get the first line from the input (the buffer).
Are there any good examples for creating output columns dynamically based on the input buffer?
Should I just give up on on the transform and create a custom source component instead?

I have a table this is populated by a flat file. In the desc field from the flat file some of the data is very long up to 150 characters in length. I have to export this data after some transformations to a fixed width file. I need to check the length of the data in the desc field and any thing that is to long needs to be put in a desc2 field, however any values in desc that are shorter than 36 characters in length needs to have spaces padding it up to 36 characters as well as the desc2 field. Any help would be great. I am not the best T-SQL programmer in the world and have limited time to get this done.

Hello Friends,
I am working on a web application and using Sql Server 2005 as a Databasew. I want to define a variable with the datatype as defined in the database. Let me give an example.
In my web say there is a field "First Name" and for that I had created a TextBox "txtFirstName" in code behind to get this value I have defined a variable
String getFirstName;
Now this variable has to be stored into the table "Person" into the column "FirstName" which is of type "nvarchar" and having length "20" So I want to get this length programatically so that I can assign this number (20) to the maxlength property of the textbox "txtFirstName" so that in future if the legth of the database column changes it should no be needed to change in code also.
Caqn it be done? If yes please let me know.
