Cannot See The SQL Express Instance On The Network Server List...

I have installed SQL Server Express and I can connect with it locally using "localcomputernameSQLEXPRESS". It is configured for remote connection and for some reason, when I browse for this instance on the Network Server, it does not appear in the list. I have unistalled/installed it several times and still I cannot see this instance on the SQL Network server list. Can anyone help troble shoot this frustrating issue...

I have SQL Server Express and VB 2005 Express installed in a Microsoft Windows XP Pro PC that is a terminal PC in our office Network. My Network Administrator has granted my terminal PC for Administrator Use. I tried to do the ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 programming in my terminal PC and I could not get a remote connection in the Window Form Application via Window Authorization. I do not know how to make this kind of remote connection in my Network. Please help and advise.

In my office computer network system (LAN), my Windows XP Pro PC has SQL Server Express and VB 2005 Express installed and I was granted to have the Administrator priviledge to access SQL Server Express. I tried to create a SQLCLR project in my terminal PC.
1) I tried to set up a remote connection to SQL Server Express in the following way: SQL Server EXpress => SQL Server Surface Area Configuration. In the Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connection - local, I clicked on Remote Connection of Database Engine, SQLEXPRESS and I had a "dot" on "Local and remote connections" and "Using TCP/IP only". Then I clicked on "Apply" and "OK" buttons. Then I went to restart my database engine in SQL Server Management. When I went to check SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration, I saw the arrow is pointing to "Service", not to "Remote Connections"!!!??? Is it right/normal? Please comment on this matter and tell me how I can have "Remote Connecton" on after I selected it.
2) After I restarted the database engine (I guess!!), I executed the following project code (copied from a book) in my VB 2005 Express:

I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area":
(1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the

Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option?

I do not understand the concepts and procedures to do Xcopy and User Instances for non-administrators completely-I do not know how to connect to databases and create database diagrams or schemas using the Database Explorer. I have a stand-alone Windows XP Pro PC. I have created a ChemDatabase with 3 dbo tables in the SQL Server Management Studio of my SQL Server Express and a website of my VWD Express application with an App_Data folder. I am not able to proceed to use Xcopy and user instance to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase to my App_Data folder. Please help and give me some detailed procedures/instructions to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase (or ChemDatabase itself) from the SQL Server Management Studio Express to the App_Data folder of the website of my VWD Express project?

im redeveloping my application from using access 2000/DAO to VS2005 professional/SQL server express using ADO.NET (i use VB), and just want to make sure i'm on the right lines about using sql server express 2005 on a network. i've spent hours reading every concievable article on the web after failing to create a database on a network drive, and ive just come across a good artricle here but want to be sure i understand what i need to do properly.
am i correct in the following please:
i only need 1 instance of SQL Server installed on the server, local PC's that will be using my SQL database do not need SQL server/management express installing?
obviously the database resides on the same server as SQL server 2005 on the network.
i dont need any additional software/drivers etc installing on the local pc's (as a miniumum all local pc's will be running w2000 or XP)
In my local pc's, i set the connection string to point to the instance of SQL server on the server PC
i need to enable the tcp/ip connection stuff on the server.
all local PC's need .NET framework 2.0 installing, as well as the server.
as an additional question, what if an end user has another SQL version installed already, say the enterprise version? is it recommended i link my app. to that, or still use SQL express for my own purposes, and are there any issues with having both database engines existing on the same server?
is there a limit on the number of concurrent users. i have read in some places that there is a limit of 4 or 5, and elsewhere that there is not.
is there anything else i should consider?, and any other help or advice is welcome.

Cant Connect To SQL Server Express Over Network
Mar 13, 2008Is there a limitation in sql server 2005 express that it does not accept connections via the network? I am trying to develop a web application running the web server as a VM but I can't connect to the sql server on the host machine. Similarly, I can't create an ODBC connection on the VM, but I can on the host. I could install sql express on the VM, that is probably the next thing I'll try.

On my laptop running Vista Enterprise, I can not connect to these exact same instances via MS SQL Server Management Studio as I am getting the above error. Does anyone else have this problem? Getting Past SQL Network Interface Error 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified
Sep 21, 2006First-time poster (and very new to ASP.NET, so please be patient) - I am using VS 2005. I have an ASP.Net 2.0 app that is using Forms Authentication and a Login server control with AspNetSqlMembershipProvider. I have an instance of ASPNETDB.MDF in the App_Data directory on my local machine and all works well (or at least as expected). I used the Copy Web Site function to port the app (including the ASPNETDB.MDF files) to my production platform, where I encounter the error mentioned in the subject line. I have found posts (both here and other forums) that mention enabling TCP/IP using Surface Area Configuartion Utility, SQL Server Browser are exempt from firewall, and a few other things. My production machine does not have SQL SVR 2005 installed nor SQL SVR Express. Do I have to install SQL Server Express onto my production platform in order to resolve this, or is there another means (something in SQL Server 2005 Management Studio on my local machine) that will enable me to do this on the production machine?Also, I have been told that it is possible to use a database on another machine as the data store for authentication. Does anyone know how to do that? This would make the first question moot.Thanks in advance!

Apr 30, 2008Ok can somebody please explain to me why only 1/2 my project is getting this error. I am working with SQLExpress on a remote windows 2003 box. The sql server has its service running and the browser is also running. The server has been set to allow remote connections and to accept TCP/IP and Named Pipes. Now, the website uses asp.net membership and roles to allow the users to login, which actually works. So I know that there are no errors in that connection string. However, all the data acess code is compliled as a sepeate class library thats referenced in the bin directory. When calling those methods to beind to a control in code, is where i run into this error. The class library connection string in the app.config file is exactly the same as the connection string in the web.config...i have checked permissions as well, im at a loss to the reason why this is not working....its probably something simple, but im not finding it.
On a seperate note - How do i get the remote database to show up in the server explorer on vs2008, i have tried putting in the ip addressinstance name, and a combo of there items, it will not connect. I have a feeling the two issues are connected. Also fyi, on the remote box, I am able to login with the sql studio express, so im not really sure exactly wuts gong on. Both items are really important and i need to be able to use both of them.

I've already done a search on the error 26, which gave me alot of hints about solving the problem.Still I'm gettting this error. I already enabled the remote connections through the sql surface area configuration.Could it have something to do with the fact that I use LINQ? I can't find any connectionstring to modify anywhere ... Help would be appreciated.

Mar 24, 2006I made a simple ASP.NET 2.0 Website that uses memberships, roles, and access to MS SQL Server 2005 database. Everything works fine on my development computer (WinXP Pro). When I deployed this Website on another computer (WinXP Pro) and tried to access the main page from the same computer, I get the error below.
I disabled the Windows Firewall (the only one I use), I ensured that SQL Server Browser is Active and Running, and I changed Remote Connections in SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration to use Local and Remote connections for all the components.
In my Web.Config I used:

Hi,
I have been stuck up with this error.
I am using SQL Srver express edition with asp.net 2.0 on windows XP SP2.
When I open the SQL Management studio and execute queries it works fine.
When I exute query in command prompt using SQLCMD -E -S ServernameInstance
It conect with database and I can freely execute queries in command prompt.
I have also tried to connect with Classical ASP 3.0 It also works fine. No error
I have made all changes that u specified in ur article.
But When I try to connect with asp.net. It gives me error.

Same files are workign fine in my office with SQL Server 2005 enterprise edition and ASp.net 2.0. on Windows server 2003. I do not get this error. But at home I am facing this problem again and again.
Can A SQL Server Express Talk With Other SQL Server Express In The Same Network?

There is a service from SQL Server 2005 that "listens" to the network, if the network is down, all data gets saved within the local instance of the SQL server 2005. And when the network becomes available, the local instance of the sql server will automatically "feed" the local records to the central SQL server 2005.
What is that feature called?

Sep 26, 2007This problem happens on this particular machine and doesn't happen on other machines that I have. And I think this problem belongs to this forum. Because the problem is triggered by a special setting in the connection string.
I followed the steps of threads including Xinwei Hong's instruction for fixing this error(26) but has no luck.
The problem occurs when I call SqlConnection.Open().
I am using window xp, sql2000. the named instance is on local machine, my connection string is like
"Data Source=MSL-1417762\SQL2000;Initial Catalog=PopulateForeignKeys_MSL_1417762_2_5984;Integrated Security=True;Pooling=False;Asynchronous Processing=true"
Whenever I change Asynchronous Processing=true into Asynchronous Processing=false, the problem is gone.
This problem also occurs when I use Visual Studio - Server Explorer - Add Connection dialog - Advanced button - Advanced Properties window where you can set Asynchronous Processing property to true.
Can you please help?

Jun 12, 2006I'm having an issue when moving my site from my laptop that's running VWD Express and SQL 2005 Express to my production Windows 2003 server running SQL 2005 Standard. The site is a portal site that authenticates to my Active Directory, and uses roles bases in SQL. I can open the site on the laptop and everything works fine and I have no problems. Once I copy the site to the production server and try to access the site, I get the login page fine and try to login. The default page never opens so I'm thinking this must be some type of roles issue. Do I need to do anything with my ASPNETDB.MDF file to make it work with SQL 2005 Standard instead of Express version? I've already made sure that the SQL server is accepting remote connections...what other things do I need to do to my SQL server to ensure proper functioning? Any particular security user I need to be running particular services under? Thanks in advance...

After some reading I "Enabled" tcp/ip, named pipes, and shared memory in sql server confiuration manager.
But when I go to "Attach Database" in Sql Express managemnent studio. It does not show the network drives much less allow me to attach anything on a network drive.
What am I missing here?
If I install sql server on the network machine will my local Sql express recognize it?

After the install is done I start the service form the command prompt using
start mssqlserver
I see that the SQL Server service has started under NETWORK SERVICE account!!! when the documentation i Read on MSDN says it starts in Local System account
Can any one explain me the possible reasons

Network Instance Listing

I have installed SQL Server Express on several machines on my network using same command line, configuring remote connections to be allowed. I have also added SQL Server and SQL Browser to the exceptions list in Windows Firewall.
All the installed intances in the network are listed when using SMO enumeration to browse through the servers.
But, in one of the machines, only the local SQL Express Instance is listed. The same is the case when trying from SQL Server Management Studio. But when I manually type the remote instance name it successfully connects.
I also found that adding SQL Management Studio to the list of exceptions in the Firewall solves the problem. But I don't want to install Management Studio in my client machines.
Any alternate solution will be helpful

I have a problem of configuration in SQL server 2005 express train. In fact, I do not know how to make the configuration to tackle the databases SQL server 2005 express train which are on a station has starting from a station B (both being in a network LAN).
But I read in the module of €œconfiguration of the surface of exposure for the services and connections - localhost€? that €œBy defect, the editions Express train, Evaluation and Developer SQL SERVER 2005 authorize only local connections.€?. As it is BY DEFECT, I said myself that it will have to be changed a parameter so that access TCP/IP can go on this version of SQL SERVER.
Here is the message which I have:

sql server 2005 express is giving error
"system.data.sqlclient.sqlErroratabase <dbname> cannot be opened due to inaccessible files
or insufficient memory or disk space (microsoft.sqlserver.express.smo)."
But when I restore database from "C:" or local drive it alows to do so.
Can anyone help.
Can't See The SQL Server Express Instance On SQL Browser

I am using SQL Server Express to connect to the network using VPN on a local machine. I have done the following..
a.) Enabled the remote connections for the Express Instance and rebooted the machine.
b.) Connected to the machine with Express Edition locally and can also connect other SQL Server instances from it to verify connectivity.
c.) Yes, SQL Browser Service is running.
d.) Firewall is not turned on, so I do not have to configure any exceptions.
Now here is the big problem: When I browse for SQL Servers on the network the machine does not show up on the list, i.e "macinenameSQLExpress". I had uninstalled and reinstalled the Express edition and rebooted the machine several times with no luck on the SQL Express Instance showing up on the browser list. I even changed the default instance name to "machinenameMACHINE1" on one of the reinstalls. However, I can connect to other SQL Instances from it. But, I cannot connect to it from other machines since its not registered on the network. I have been working on this for the past few days by looking for a solution via this and other forumns. Is there some setting somewhere that I am missing that prevents this instance from not showing up on the browser list. This issue with SQL Express Edition is baffling as well as frustrating and any ideas that can resolve this issue is very much appreciated.
Database Connection: Mapped Network Drive (VC++ Express, MSSQL SMS Express, XP)

I have VC++ express and MSSQL SMS express and have an application working nicely locally. The Data explorer and data connections part works really easily.
Now, I want to make the application available to my home network.
I mapped the drive where the database is and called it Z: so I could put my "release" on my other network PC and assumed it would find Z: if I mapped the shared network drive on that machine and called it Z:
But: I can't even add the mapped connection on the local machine, I get:
The file "Z:databasescalorie.mdf" is on a network path not supported for database files. An attempt to attach.....etc"
It works fine on the original F drive.......
Am I approaching this the wrong way. How should I distribute to network PCs?
