How To Compare Image/varbinary Column

May 5, 2008

what is the best way of comparing image/varbinary and nullable column in sql server?
this is what i do to find out the different in image column in 2 tables sharing the same structure:
Select *
From TblA s
Left Join TblB c On

s.Id = c.Id And Coalesce(Convert(VARBINARY(MAX), c.Image),'') <> Coalesce(Convert(VARBINARY(MAX), s.Image),'')
Where c.Id IS NULL

alternatively, i was thinking to compare the column with the size, but worry about the accuracy:
Select *
From TblA s
Left Join TblB c On

s.Id = c.Id And ISNULL(Datalength(c.Image),0) <> ISNULL(Datalength(s.Image),0) Where c.Id IS NULL

any suggestion/advise will be appreciated ~

From 'image' To 'varbinary(max)'

Apr 1, 2008

HiI moved to SQL Server 2005 (from 2000) and noticed there is a bettervariable to deal with binary arrays.I hava a table that hold 9 columns of images (BLOB). each array has adifferent size and can be larger than 4k.I've changed the column data type from image to varbinary(max). After the chnage, the size of the table grew from 22MB to 26MB.Any idea why? I though the new variable should be better.I have another table where there are 3 columns with binaries, the sizeof the arrays there is much smaller and vary from 32bytes to 150byteslong. when I changed the data type to varbinary the size of the tableshrunk by half!!now I'm completely confused...Gilad.

Image Datatype In SQL 2000 To Varbinary(max) In SQL 2005

May 9, 2008

We used SSIS to move data from a table in SQL 2000 which had a column with the image datatype to a column in a table in SQL 2005 that has a datatype of varbinary(max). No errors were produced from the SSIS package.

There were a number of records where the DATALENGTH of the column with the image datatype was greater than 8000. Was the data truncated for these records?

This is probably a very elementary question, but I am not familiar with the application or the data.

Below is the source table in SQL 2000 and a select count(*) ...

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[LSCHANNELCUTDATA](
[UIDCHANNELCUT] [numeric](19, 0) NOT NULL,
[VALUECODES] [image] NULL,
...

selectcount(*)
from[LSCHANNELCUTDATA]
whereDATALENGTH ( [VALUECODES] )> 8000

Timeouts On Delete With Image And Varbinary(max) Data

Oct 8, 2007

I have a database that I am using as an archive for emails and am storing them in varbinary(max) data types. The database works fine for inserts and retrieval but I cannot delete large sets of records ( > 30K) without it timing out. I assume this is because SQL server isn't simply releasing the handle to the blob but is instead doing a lot of work reclaiming the space.
Is there any flag I can set or approach I can use to resolve this issue?

I was considering moving the blobs into a seperate simple table and putting async triggers on the primary to delete the blobs, will this work?

Any ideas are appreciated. Besides the "store files in the file system" idea.

Insert Null Value Into Varbinary(max) Column

Apr 20, 2008

Hello,
I'm working on a website that allows users to upload small JPEG files. I followed the article at http://aspnet.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/120606-1.aspx. On the webpage I'm using a formview control to insert new records in the database. As suggested in the article I removed the "type='object'" from the insert parameters for the image column. The data is saved by using a sqldatasource with stored procedures. The image column is of type varbinary(max) and allows null values. Everythings works fine as long as the user uploads an image. The data is saved correctly and on another page the image can be viewed. However if the user does not upload a picture and tries to save the new record the following error is thrown:
Implicit conversion from data type nvarchar to varbinary(max) is not allowed. Use the CONVERT function to run this query.
In the formviews iteminserting event I have the following code: Dim imageBytes(fileupload1.PostedFile.InputStream.Length) As Byte            fileupload1.PostedFile.InputStream.Read(imageBytes, 0, imageBytes.Length)            e.Values("Image") = imageBytes What code should I use in case the fileupload1 has no file?  I tried something like:                        e.values("Image") = dbnull.value  But that doesn't work.  Any suggestions?

SqlException Inserting NULL Into A Varbinary(MAX) Column.

Jul 12, 2007

I get the following error when my insert has a DBNull value for a column of type varbinary(MAX). "Implicit conversion from data type nvarchar to varbinary(max) is not allowed. Use the CONVERT function to run this query." In my opinion, the .NET SqlDataAdapter is attempting to convert the null value to a nvarchar. Is it possible to insert a null value in varbinary(max)? I didn't have this problem with the image datatype. Is this a bug or is there a work around to this problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

No Results Returned For Full Text Search On Varbinary(max) Column

Jul 10, 2007

Hi, I was wondering if any SQL Server gurus out there could help me...I
have a table which contains text resources for my application. The text
resources are multi-lingual so I've read that if I add a html language
indicator meta tag e.g.<META NAME="MS.LOCALE" CONTENT="ES">and
store the text in a varbinary column with a supporting Document Type
column containing ".html" of varchar(5) then the full text index
service should be intelligent about the language word breakers it
applies when indexing the text. (I hope this is correct technique for
best multi-lingual support in a single table?)However, when I come to query this data the results always return 0 rows (no errors are encountered). e.g.DECLARE @SearchWord nvarchar(256)SET @SearchWord = 'search' -- Yes, this word is definitely present in my resources.SELECT * FROM Resource WHERE CONTAINS(Document, @SearchWord)I'm a little puzzled as Full Text search is working fine on another table that employs an nvarchar column.Any pointers / suggestions would be greatly appreciated. SQL 2005 Bug? Cannot Create Full Text Index For VARBINARY Column That's Populated With Converted NVARCHAR Values

Jul 11, 2007

Hi, I was wondering if any SQL Server gurus out there could help me...I have a table I'm trying to apply a full text catalog to, however no results are ever returned due to the text column being cataloged being of varbinary(max) that's being populated from a converted nvarchar(max) value - I've narrowed it down to this specifically, populating with non nvarchar text seems to work fine.To re-create the problem quickly...If I populate the column viaCONVERT(varbinary(max), 'test text')then there is no problem, I get results as expected. However if I populate the column viaCONVERT(varbinary(max), CAST('test text' as nvarchar(max)))no results are ever returned. Is this a bug with SQL Server 2005 Full Text Indexing? I'm happily creating full text catalogs when an nvarchar is not getting converted into a varbinary.I'm setting the Document Type column to '.html' (I've tried changing this to '.txt' in case it was a fault with the html ifilter but the problem persists so I believe I can rule this out). The reason I need to convert an nvarchar to varbinary is that the table holds multi-lingual text and I'm adding a html meta tag <META NAME="MS.LOCALE" CONTENT="ES"> to the beginning in order for the full text indexing word breaker to select the correct language to catalog the text with. The aim being to provide more relevant searches in users native languages (I've read a few articles that describe this technique, but it's the first time I've tried to apply it).Any pointers / suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers,Gavin.

UPDATE: Below is a T-SQL script you can run to demonstrate the effect I'm experiencing...

Code Snippet

-- Create test database

-- Create test data table
CREATE TABLE TestTable

varbinarycol VARBINARY(MAX),
documentExtension VARCHAR(5),

GO

-- The below single entry WILL BE FOUND (the text source is being entered directly)
INSERT INTO TestTable (pk, varbinarycol, documentExtension) VALUES (NEWID(), CONVERT(VARBINARY(MAX),'<META NAME="MS.LOCALE" CONTENT="EN">test entry 1'), '.html')

-- The bellow two entries below WILL NOT BE FOUND (the text source is taken from an NVARCHAR(MAX) value)
INSERT INTO TestTable (pk, varbinarycol, documentExtension) VALUES (NEWID(), CONVERT(VARBINARY(MAX), CAST('<META NAME="MS.LOCALE" CONTENT="EN">test entry 2' AS NVARCHAR(MAX))), '.html')
INSERT INTO TestTable (pk, varbinarycol, documentExtension) VALUES (NEWID(), CONVERT(VARBINARY(MAX), CAST('<META NAME="MS.LOCALE" CONTENT="EN">test entry 3' AS NVARCHAR(MAX))), '.html')
GO

-- Create the full text catalog

GO
CREATE FULLTEXT CATALOG TEST AS DEFAULT
GO
CREATE FULLTEXT INDEX ON TestTable (varbinarycol TYPE COLUMN documentExtension LANGUAGE 1033)
KEY INDEX tablePK
GO

-- NOTE: You might need to give the catalog a chance to build before running the script below.

-- Now do a search that SHOULD RETURN 3 ROWS of data, but ONLY 1 ROW IS RETURNED
SELECT CAST(varbinarycol AS NVARCHAR(MAX)) FROM TestTable WHERE CONTAINS(varbinarycol, 'test')

Compare Rows To Determine If Column Values Are Different?

Mar 2, 2011

I need to determine if a value for a group of rows is the same or different and I am not sure where to begin. I am fairly new to writing T-Sql code. I am working with SQL Server 2005. This is a work assignment; I am not a student.

I have two tables: One for Course and another for CourseDays. As the Course table implies, it lists courses for a school. The CourseDays tables has a row for each day a course is held. For instance, one course maybe held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, so there would be three rows, one row for each day. A given course could be held in a different room for each day. I am trying to write a query that returns one row for each course, and if the room number is the same for each day the class is held, return that room number in the row, else return 'Various'.

Course table:
CourseID, Desc
1 English
2 History
3 Science

CourseDays table:
CourseID, Day, RoomID
1 M 320
1 W 445
1 F 680
2 T 123
2 Th 123
3 M 514
3 T 514
3 W 521
3 Th 901
3 F 521

Expected results:
CourseID, Desc, RoomID
1 English Various
2 History 123
3 Science Various

I simplified the example, as there are about 30 columns in the table and about half a million rows.
