How To Delete Records When Disk Drive Is Full

Jul 7, 2015

My data folder of SQL as filled up the space of my local drive. I have 150KB free space left in the drive. So I have to delete some records to regain space. But when I run the delete query it says transaction log is full and stops halfway. How can I free space? How can I delete the records? There is no available space to shrink as well.

2 Servers 1 Disk Drive

Sep 10, 1999

I've been asked to configure a "hot-backup" server configuration.
However, I'm coming into the situation a bit later, and they would like me to accomplish the hot-backup with their hardware and their methodology.

Here goes.

We have two identical servers. They will both have a SCSI connection to a device refered to as an "EMC". It will be seen as a single drive letter "E:" to both boxes. Only 1 server will be "up" and using the drive at a time.

The idea is to have SQL devices - (oops, database files) located on the "EMC" drives and in the event of a failure of one server, we bring up the backup and it will take right off using the existing Database files (*.mdf, *.ldf files).

1. Can Sql server 2 come up using databases that have been modified
by server 1. (Provided Master database is on this common drive?

2. What about MSDB, can it be located on a drive different than
where SQL program files are located?

3. How about installing all of SQL application and DB's onto
the Shared Drive? Can a different server come up using the same files?

Anyone out there done/seen/heard of a similar configuration?
Any caveats

Also if I cannot move the indexes during restore, how would I move them afterwards to a different filegroup/disk drive? Thanks in advance for all the help.

Do/can Multiple Filegroups Really Make A Difference When Only One Disk Drive Is Involve?

Sep 27, 2007

outside of restore manageability, can multiple filegroups enhance performance when only one disk is attached? I guess I should also ask if it can hurt?

I have two use cases and am a bit unclear after reading lots of material on the subject.

My first use case is an OLTP consisting of a very stable set of "configuration" tables and a volatile transaction intake table with RI on the stable tables. I thought about putting the volatile table in it's own filegroup due to it's behavior but am second guessing myself after seeing that every author on the subject seems to hint that filegroups are only relevant when they map to different disks.

My second use case is an archive (readonly) that I will "range" partition due to volume. My first instinct was to create one filegroup for each partition but again I'm wondering what that will buy me in an environment with only a single disk.

Server Disk Space Is Getting Close To Full Capacity

Feb 18, 2015

My SQL server disk space is getting close to full capacity which is causing certain reports that we run via the SQL server to time out because I don't think there is enough space on the server.

Any tips on cleaning out a SQL server? Are there any folders that can absolutely be deleted to clear space? I know on a local computer that the %temp% folder can be cleaned out. I know when dealing with servers you do not want to make to many changes because it can cause major problems down the road.

Data Flow Task To Delete Records And Then Insert Records In Transaction

Aug 6, 2007

HI,

I have been trying to solve the locking problem from past couple of days. Please help mee!!

Scenario:
--------------
I have a SSIS package in which 2 data flow tasks. 1st data flow task deletes records from a 5 tables and the 2nd data flow task should insert records into 1 of the five tables after the success of 1st data flow task. This scenario runs in Transacation.

The above scenrio in the 2nd data flow task hangs in runtime. It does not complete. with sp_who2 command i could see that there is an intent share lock(LK_M_IS) on the table and the status is SUSPENDED.

I dont know how to come out of this locking. Please help.

Delete Records ?

Jan 31, 2007

Hello, its hard to explain, i have a table like this: --userpage_visitors-- id bigint owner nvarchar(20) visitor nvarchar(20) created datetime
Then i have some code like this:  (@Visitor is send to the stored proc)DECLARE @lastuser nvarchar(20)SELECT TOP 1 @lastuser = visitor FROM userpage_visitors WHERE (owner = @UserName) ORDER BY created DESCIF (@lastuser <> @Visitor)BEGININSERT INTO userpage_visitors (owner, visitor, created) VALUES (@UserName, @Visitor, @Created)-- delete hereEND
Now after i have inserted the new visitor into the table, i need to clean the table... so each user should have maximum of 30 visitors, so if the user i inserted above is the 31st user then i need to delete the first user, so i always have 30 fresch visitors,, if they have less then 30 visitors then nothing should happen. The question is, how can i get the 31th post? in mysql you can say that you want post 30, 31, but in mssql you only have the TOP to select limited posts, any ideas?

Full Text Searching....THOUSANDS Of Records!

Sep 12, 2005

Hope I am in the correct section.

I am installing a FTS system on an existing system (that used LIKE % queries!!  hahaha)

Anyway, it is working pretty well (AND FAST!) but when I type in a
common word like "damage" I get like 32,000 records.  Now, the
server handles those records in about one second but the ASP page that
returns the results takes about one MINUTE to download.  When I
save the source, it is almost 12 MEGS!!

So, basically, I am streaming 12 megs across the pipe and I want to reduce that.

I would like the system to detect over maybe 500 records and cancel the search.

I have put a "TOP 500" into the search and that actually works pretty well but is there a better/smarter method?

Thanks!

How Do I Delete One Of A Pair Of Records.

Sep 8, 2007

I have a table, gdbdoc,  that contains record-key pairs, linking records in another table.   There is no significance in the order of the link: if records A and B are linked, then I don't care whether the link is A -> B or B -> A, and my normal query logic is     SELECT ... Where DCIindiid = A ...     union     SELECT ... Where DCILinkid = A(DCIindiid = key1, DCILinkid = Key2)
The link-creation process normally checks whether there is already a link in either direction.  Thus before creating a link A->B the logic checks to see whether either the A->B or B->A link record exists, and a new link is not created if the link already exists in either direction.  However recently one of my processes bypassed the reverse-link check, and I've ended up with a few hundred cases where there is both an A->B link and a B->A link.
If I run a query: -      select gd1.* from gdbdoc as gd1 join gdbdoc as gd2 on gd1.dciindiid = gd2.dcilinkid and gd1.dcilinkid = gd2.dciindiid
this displays all the records where one record links A -> B and there is also another record that links B -> A.
How do I write a query to delete ONE of the pair of duplicate records?  I have two problems: -
Problem 1:  Table gdbdoc is keyed on (DCIindiid, DCILinkid).  Both guids are needed to create a unique key, and the table does not have a single key field.  You can't write    DELETE gdbdoc where DCIIndiid, DCILinkid IN select gd1.dciindiid, gd1.linkid                             from gdbdoc as gd1 join gdbdoc as gd2 on gd1.dciindiid = gd2.dcilinkid and gd1.dcilinkid = gd2.dciindiid
as the DELETE ... SELECT ... syntax only seems to support a single returned value.
Problem 2.  If we solved problem 1, we would (I think) delete BOTH the A->B link and the B->A link , whereas I only want to delete one of these links.
Afterthought:  Problem 2 seems easily solvable:  add "Where gd1.DCIindiid < gd1.DCILinkid" to the DELETE ... statement.  Although the concept of "<" doesn't really mean anything with a guid, this is accepted by SQL, and halves the number of records returned by the select.  Obviously I don't care which of the two links (A->B or B->A) is deleted.
Regards, Robert Barnes
