SQL Express Beta To SQL Express Current Version

Apr 1, 2006

I have a database which was created in a beta release of SQL Server Express. It was also create when I had the .Net Framework 2.0 Beta installed.

Since then, I have installed .Net Framework 2.0 (Current Release) because that is what was required for MS SQL Server Management Studio Express.

When I try to connect to the DB now it says Cannot connect to server.

I also have the mdf/ldf files. When I try to attach them on another computer running the latest version of SQL Server Express it says:

Database 'Name' connot be upgraded because its non-release version (587) is not supported by this version of SQL Server. You cannot open a database that is incompatible with this vertion of sqlservr.exe. You must re-create the database....

Any ideas how i can get the mdf/ldf files converted over? Or how I can attach the the ealier version of sql server express?? thanks.

Distinguish Between The Publisher And The Subscribers

Nov 10, 2006

I have a database on SQL Sever 2005 SP1 against which a Publication has been defined and to which many servers (both Workgroup and Express editions - SP1) Subscribe to.

I would like to be able to distinguish between the Publisher and the Subscribers programmatically via T-SQL.

From reading BoL and various forums it appears that the IsPublished, IsMergePublished and IsSubscribed options of the DatabasePropertyEx function should give me this information.

However within all our tested environments, whilst the IsMergePublished option returns expected values. IsPublished and IsSubscribed both return 0 on all servers (the Publisher and Subscribers).

Is this a know issue and how can I rectify the problem or alternatively does anyone know of another method to distinguishing between the Publishers and Subscribers.

Thanks

How To Distinguish Operation Type In Trigger?

May 31, 2007

Hi,I want to have all-in-one trigger, defined like this:CREATE TRIGGER MyInsertDeleteUpdateHandlerON MyTableFOR DELETE, INSERT, UPDATEASBEGIN(...)ENDNow, how can I tell why this trigger was fired (what event causedtrigger to be fired) - was it DELETE, INSERT or UPDATE?Is there something like this: @@event_type,so I could do for example IF (@@event_type = DELETE) (...)Of course I can create 3 triggers instead of 1, to be sure what eventfired my trigger.I can also count records in _deleted_, _inserted_ tables or to doJOINs with it. But, _inserted_ table is common for UPDATE and INSERTevents..Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.Hubert

Is this a problem to be concerned about?

SQL Server Express - Version And SP1

Oct 11, 2006

Sorry if this is going over old ground. I am trying to establish which version of SQL Express I have (Sounds daft I know!)

From Server Management app it tells me the following:

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.2047.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2000.085.1117.00 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Microsoft MSXML 2.6 3.0 4.0 5.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.42
Operating System 5.1.2600

Is SP! appropriate, or am I there already?

Best regards (ever so 'umble!)

MS SQL Express Advanced Vs MS SQL Full Version Vs MySQL

Jul 23, 2007

I'm planning to transport a desktop application to the web. A spin-off ofthis application has already been put on the web by another programmer. Heused ColdFusion with MS SQL, Access, VC, and Java. It is faster than thedesktop application (written in VFP).1. Can I get the same results using MS SQL Express Advanced and Access forthe internet version if used with .net?2. Are the select statements limited in power, accuracy, size, etc. for MSSQL Express Advanced when compared to SQL?3. If Access will perform poorly, can VFP be used instead with .net? Ialready know it can't be used with ColdFusion. 4. If MS Express Advancedwill not sufficiently replace SQL, will MySQL do the job better? Thanks

Upgrading SQL Express: Is It Possible To Restrict To Which Version Upgrade Is Possible?

Aug 15, 2007

Greetings,

I am about to let users upgrade their SQL Express installations to Standard Edition. They will all run the upgrade program by a command line argument that I will supply along with a setup.ini that I will supply. Is it possible by simple means "hack" the setup.ini file in order to only allow upgrade to x86 Standard Edition? We have DVDs with all kinds of editions for both x86 and 64-bit and I would not want the users to accidentally upgrade to Enterprise Edition or a 64-bit Standard edition.

Is this possible to attain by simply means or do I have to upgrade all clients myself?

Vista 64 Bit Machine With 64 Bit Version Of SQL Server Express 2005

May 28, 2008

Hi

I have a PC running the 64 bit version of vista home premium (will be soon upgrading to ultimate).

On the download page http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-au/express/bb410792.aspx for SQL Server Express under the section entitled SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 it mentions at the bottom of the page (referred by * & **) that there is a 64 bit install version available for both SQL Server & management Studio.

However, under the section entitled SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2, there is no * or **. As far as I can tell, the Advanced services has Reporting Services as well.

So, what I am wondering is, can I specifically download the 64 bit versions of SQL server express & management studio and as well, download just the reporting services part of Advanced Services?

Kind regards

What Version: Enterprise Manager Or Management Studio Express

Feb 12, 2007

This may be a dumb question but I have searched and haven't found an answer to it here yet.

We are planing to get SQL Server 2005 for a specific purpose. We have several existing stand alone SQL Server 2000 database servers already. I have Enterprise Manager (2000) client installed on my PC. I recently installed SQL Server Express (2005) on my PC to get to know about new features.

I have run into problems (BCP specifically) with having two versions of C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server80... and C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90... on my PC.

Is there any point before or after we purchase Standard version of SQL Server 2005 when I can do away with C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server80... and/or uninstall Enterprise manager?

In other words can I manage SQL Server 2000 databases using only Management Studio(SQL Server 2005 client)? If not, how do I manage the two different versions of the client software on a single PC.

Thanks,

Dave K.

SQL Express Error When Installing On Non-English Version Of Vista

Oct 9, 2007

Hello all,

I'm getting this error when installing SQL Express 2005 on a non-English version of Vista.

"SQL Server Setup could not validate the service accounts. Either the service accounts have not been provided for all of the services being installed, or the specified username or password is incorrect. For each service, specify a valid username, passowrd, and domain, or specify a built-in system account."

Using Wise I get this error only when installing on a non-English version of Windows Vista, I can get the install to complete if I remove nt/authority. I've tried changing the non-English versions of Vista localization to English but I still get the same error.

Any help would be great.

Thank you

Server 2005 Express Vs Advanced SErvices Version

Sep 7, 2007

Our new version of a VB.net 2005 program uses

Install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

While upgrading a client over PCAnywhere in another state, I inadvertantly installed

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services

I have had an absolute nightmare with SQL 2005 uninstalling it from a laptop on my desk, so you can understand why I don't want to try uninstalling the Advanced Services version on a computer over PCAnywhere.

However, the remote computer does not have IIS on it, which prompts a warning form Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services.

So, the simple question is, if the program works Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition then I assume it will work with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services, since it doesn't use any advance services.

Please advise.

Confused As To Which SQL Server Version The Express Languages Work With

Apr 6, 2006

I have SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition installed on my PC. I also have the Express Editions of VB and C# installed. Is there any purpose served in my installing SQL Express, also?

I've read comments that the Express languages can only connect to SQL Express databases and not SQL Server 2005 databases; however, I'm not sure how that is enforced. The 'connect to database' wizard does seem to be different in the Express IDE than it is in Visual Studio.

I've read other Express language references that say that they can only connect to SQL Server databases via something called User Instances; however, it's not clear to me if that infers that only SQL Express supports User Instances.

Regarding User Instances, it's not clear to me whether this technology is for single-user (i.e., exclusive) access or not. What scenarios are User Instances good for?

Install Both SQL Server 2005 Full Version && Express Edition

May 8, 2008

SQL Server 2005 full version is installed on a server computer. I installed MS VS 2005 Express edition on the server. As VS 2005 Express edition can only access to SQL Server 2005 Express edition, so a SQL Server 2005 Express edition has to be installed on the server. I wonder if both SQL Server 2005 full version and Express edition can be installed in the same computer.

Managing SQL Express Databases With Standard Version Of SQL Server Management Studio

I have a windows 2003 server which has SQL 2005 Express with advanced services installed on it. So is there a way i can connect to the Express Instance from management studio(that comes with the standard edition of sql) and have all its functions available when working with a SQL express database. SQL Server SP2 Command Line Upgrade Switch And Express Version Detection

Mar 9, 2007

Our application installation setup needs to be able to detect:

Is SQL Server 2005 Express Installed?

If false, run the SP2 Installation
Is SQL Server 2005 Express or SQL Express SP1 Installed?

If false, run the SP2 Installation with Update Switch
Is SQL Server 2005 (not Express) Installed

If true, abort installation with a mesage.

Can you direct me to some documentation about testing for these environments or just if someone has some scripts that will run in InstallShield, that would be great.

ALSO, can you direct me to information about using the command line update switch for the Express SP2 Installer?

Thanks.

SQL Server 2005 Express Installation Problem: Incompatible Components From Beta Version Of .NET Framework

Oct 21, 2005

Hi all,
Yesterday, I just downloaded the SQL Server 2005 Express (SQLEXPR.EXE) and tried to install it in my Windows XP Pro PC that is on Microsoft NT 4 LAN System. I got the following error: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CTP setup The Microfost .NET Framework 2.0 is not installed. Please install before running setup.
This morning, I downloaded the NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package Beta 2 (x86) from the Microsoft Download Center and installed it in my Windows XP Pro PC. Then I tried to install the SQL Server 2005 Express (SQLEXPR.EXE) again. This time I got a new error: SQL Server 2005 Setup has detected incompatible components from beta versions of Visual Studio, .NET Framework, or SQL Server 2005. Use ADD or Remove Programs to remove these components, and then run SQL Server 2005 Setup again.
I am confused and lost in this installation problem. Was the .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package Beta 2 (x86) a wrong Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 I downloaded and installed in my PC? Where is the right Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 for the SQL Server 2005 Express? Please help and advise.
Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang
