for example:
- serial no will be increase for each time confirmation has been done, The Serial no will insert into a new field as below:

00000002
00000003
and next...

My problem is one of my query is returing party_codes . now i also want a column which returns serial numbers along with it . the serial numbers are not stored anywhere. they should be autogenerated. My query is combining two different databases and its using union in it so i can not use count in it . Is there any other way i can acheive . for eg Now my query output is party_code ---------- R06048 R06600 R06791 (3 row(s) affected) I want it like party_code serial number ---------- ------------- R06048 1 R06600 2 R06791 3 (3 row(s) affected)
The serial number column should be auto generated in the select statement it self Is there any system rowid i can use . Please suggest

Id is not primary key, but should not duplicates keys, it is just a column want to generate serial number (1,2,3,4...etc) How to generate?

View 1 Replies View RelatedHi, I have the lovely task of overhauling some of our SQL-based systems. I've found many tables that don't have unique identifying numbers that really should have them. I've searched around and people keep mentioning the Identity field as being similar to Autonumber in Access. The only examples I could find involved setting up a new table... but I need to add (and populate) an identity column to an existing database table. Does anyone know the command for this?
Example... my table is called PACountyTown. It currently has 3 columns: County, Town, and Area. I wish to call the identity-ish field RecordID.

I have a field call: password, I want to generates some random chars as
default password for users (so user got something to login, and update
later).
Current Solution I have:
I made myself a trigger and it does generate password on insert, but
the problem with that is I have to allow NULL on that field. I
don't want NULL to be allowed, and if I don't allow null... sql server
won't allow me to insert a record (when leaving password field empty).
Reason i don't wanna allow NULL on that field, is because there may be
more applicaions using the same field from the same database.
Just in case if the other developer gets sloopy, I don't want other
application(s) allow user put to enter a null or leave it blank on my
password field.
My question is:
1) can I put a function or some sort at the "Default" field under "Design Table", if so...how?
2) any suggestions for a better implementation?
3) if (1) doesn't work, what other options would you suggest other then the current trigger i'm using?

I am building a simple table, populated by ASP form, where every record should be assigned a unique ID. When working with Access I used `autonumber` datatype to keep track of every record. Can something like this be done with MS SQL server, if not what do you think is a good way to solve the problem ??

In sybase if we use Number * function. It will automatically generates the serial numbers from 1 to n. similarly i need the same function in SQL server 7.0 so that my problem will be solved...

I have generated a database for my website, I intend on using software that will convert the database into static web pages.
Big problem I have I am not a programmer, but I know a tiny bit about tags etc. for search engines.
The meta tag description is what I want to create using a field in this database.
The software I am about to use has a sql builder is there anyway it could be done be highlighting the relavent field and using sql language.

This problem has been driving me around the twist.
This isn't so much purely a SQL Server question as a question on ASP.NET VB technique. In particular, I have a situation where I am either inserting a NEW row for a "profile table" (name, email, etc.) or Updating an existing one. In both cases, I need to create a new row in a related table which has the identity/serial column of the parent table as the primary key for the data to be inserted into this subsidiary table (for which there may be many rows inserted, all tying back to the parent).
At the time I do the update, of course, I have the identity/serial of the "parent" so it's easy to update/insert. However, if the profile is NEW, I need to capture the identity/serial which was inserted so as to use it for the child table insert. (I remember a call to an obscure function which was -- essentially -- "give me the identity/serial of that which was just INSERTed" but I am unable to locate equivalent functionality. (I have searched various online help files for "Insert serial", "Insert identity" and the like with no results.

I've registered with GoDaddy for my site. I've used Visual Web Dev 2005 with SQL Server Mgmt Express 2005 to create my database etc. Now with GoDaddy, I need to "recreate" the database on their server again, but I don't want to go throug the whole process again. I just want to use their query editor to generate the database online.GoDaddy mentions a "personal-sql" file that SQL Server 2000 generates, but I can't find anything like that with what I have. I am using scptxfr.exe to get the structure of a dababase. Problem is that its creating GRANT statements which I don't want. Also its selecting sysusers object. I have checked the parameters. My parameters look something like this:
dos promptmssql7upgradescptxfr.exe /S(servername) -d (databasename) /P sa /f (filename) -r
How can I run this utility without creating grant statements?
Any thoughts will help!

I have seen in Enterprise manager there is a toll that can script the all tables in a database, but nothing that can generate the insert statements for all the rows in each table in a secified database.
Does any one know of a application, plug in, script that can generate the insert statments for all the tables in a database?

I have a MSSQL database running in a Microsoft cluster. I was working on troubleshooting for another SAP problem when they suggested I change the setting using hte SQL Server Client Network Utility to 'named pipes' from 'tcp/ip'. Every since, despite changing it back I'm unable to start the database in the cluster.
I'm kind of a newbie at this so I'd really appreciate any help in getting this database up and running.
Here is the error message from the event log:
sqsrvres] checkODBCConnectError: sqlstate = HY000; native error = 0; message = [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Cannot generate SSPI context
In SQL 2000, when you generated an SQL script for a database, it was logical and the tables in the script were in alphabetical order. In SQL 2005 they are all mixed up. Am I missing something?
