Does Sql Server Collect Stats On Full Table Scans?

Jul 20, 2005

Hi all. Anyone know if sql server collects stats on how many fulltable scans a table gets and if so how do I get at those stats? Tryingto track down poorly indexed tables / processes and I am guessing thatsql server does have this data secreted away somewhere much like mydb2 and informix databases do.

Tracking Down Full Scans

Sep 21, 2001

Hi,

Full scans are bad, and I know this. I am seeing some on my database, and I know that some are unavoidable....but what I would like to do is find out which queries are causing them. I have over 500 users in my DB at any one time, and SQL Profiler doesn't seem to help me.....it shows me what objects are being scanned, but not if the scan is a full-scan or an index scan.

Does anyone have a way to find out what is causing my full scans?

Table Scans - More Rows Brought Back Than In Table

Jul 20, 2005

I have a query which is quite complex. It's based on a set of data ina complex view which takes the data from several tables. In this complex query, if I allow the various parts of the query towork on the results of the view (MISView), it can take 15 minutes torun (eek !), however, if I create a temporary table with the data fromthe view and then use that for the remainder of the query, it runs inapprox 20 seconds. Now, I have examined the execution plan (my new favourite toy) andthere is a difference (as expected). However when looking at the partof the query that takes up most of the time, it shows that it bringsback 109,645,866 records from a table (Credit) that contains 13,002records. This table is one that is referenced in the view (MISView)which contains 13,653 records and does get some of it's data from thetable which is scanned (Credit). For the record, we don't have any tables with over 100,000 records in,so 109 million rows is going some for us. The part of the query thatruns slow does reference another copy of itself but this is necessaryfor the equation that is being run.Now I'm OK with why it's doing the table scan, but why does it bringback substantially more data than is in the table ? Is it somemultiple of the number of records that it's trying to work out. Iassume it tries to run a seperate plan for the view as part of it'sprocess.Ideally, I'm still going to go down the route of the temporary table, but I would like to understand more about what it does first as Idon't like leaving things unanswered.Any help would be appreciated.

Behavior Of SQL Server On Table Scans

Jun 29, 2007

Hi All,

if someone can point me to documentation on this I would appreciate it.....

If there isn't any....

I am wondering about the behavior of SQL Server for table scans. In other databases tables scans are not really table scans, they are scans of the underlying tablespace for all the rows that are in the table.....and if many tables are placed into the same tablespace then the obvious slowdown occurs as rows are scanned that are not in the table.

This used to be the case in server 7......but is it still the case in 2005 that if the explain says 'table scan' it will in fact scan the filegroup the table is in?

Some other databases also have a map of the row numbers and the table it is in and the optimiser decides whether to scan the data itself or to navigate through the map and fetch a row at a time depending on the stats....

It seems that the grahical explain does not tell me more than 'table scan'. Is there any way to see down to the physical level of what the optimiser is going to do?

Thank You in Advance

Peter

Setup And Upgrade :: Activity Monitor Shuts Down If Connect To Instance Its Monitoring With Performance Monitor

Aug 19, 2015

If I'm on a remote machine, meaning a computer not in the WSFC cluster, and I open SSMS 2014, point it to a SQL Instance, and open activity monitor:

1.  I get all the panes and charts except % Processor Time.

2.  Then, if I authenticate to the cluster's domain by mapping a drive with valid domain credentials, I'm free to put performance counters in the Perfmon - - - but SQL Activity Monitor shuts down with“The Activity Monitor is unable to execute queries against server SQL-V01INSTANCE1..Activity monitor for this instance will be placed into a paused state.Use the context menu in the overview pane to resume the activity monitor.

Additional information:  Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED))(Mscorlib)”

3.  Of course, the Activity monitor can't be resumed via the context menu. Removing counters and closing the perfmon do not work.  I dropped the mapped drive and rebooted the machine.  That brought back 95% of the information in the Activity monitor.

4.  Further experimentation showed that any mapping of drive shares present on the SQL Server to the computer running SSMS cut off functionality of the 'overview' pane in the remote machine's SQL Activity monitor -- the monitor that had been trying to watch the server offering the shares.

Transact SQL :: Monitor When A Table Becomes Empty

May 12, 2015

I am trying to work with a developer test a code change in their application. The db basically has a workload table and as it finishes processing each row in the table, it gets deleted from the table. I want to monitor when the db becomes empty/no rows in it to test how much the code changes have worked, how long does it take to process all rows in the table. Any quick way to do it at the db level instead of having to put something in the code just for this testing.

Can't Create A Full-text Index Or Catalogue On My Sql Table.

Sep 28, 2006

I am trying to run an SELECT statement with a CONTAINS statement from a aspx.net solution built using Visual Web Developer 2005 express edition. When I try to run the thing it throws an error saying

"Cannot use a CONTAINS or FREETEXT predicate on table or indexed view 'JournalArticle' because it is not full-text indexed.".

I don't have access to the SQL Express server, I interface through Server Management Studio Express. There is an option to create a full-text index from the menu, but it is greyed out, presumably because there is no full-text catalogue. This is my real question, How do I create a full-text catalogue using Server Management Studio Express? The help function only provides examples of sql code, which I assume must be performed using sql server (which I don't have access to). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers,

Bernie

Full Text Index For AdventureWorks Document Table

May 29, 2006

I am working the Books Online documentation for the full-text search feature of SQL Server 2005 Express Advanced and having a problem following the instructions.

I made sure to choose the "Full Text Search" option during installation of VB 2005 Express Advanced.

I downloaded, installed, and attached the AdventureWorks database successfully.

I checked to ensure that the database was enabled for full-text search, but could not follow the instructions for indexing a table within the database. Here are the instructions from Books Online:
To enable a table for full-text indexing

Expand the server group, expand Databases, expand User Databases, and expand the database that contains the table you want to enable for full-text indexing.

Right-click the table that you want to enable for full-text indexing.

Select Full-Text index, and then click Enable Full-Text indexing.

Another document notes:

To create a full-text index on a table, the table must have a single, unique not null column. For example, consider a full-text index for the Document table in Adventure Works in which the DocumentID column is the primary key column.

When I right-click the Document table (Production.Document) in the AdventureWorks database, there is no option to "Select Full-Text Index" or "Enable Full Text indexing".

Am I missing something here?

How do I get the the table indexed for full text search?

Creating Full-text Indexes On A Table In A Publication

Sep 13, 2006

I have a table that is in a one way transactional publication. I need to create a full-text catalog on this table and have that catalog exist on the subscriber as well. I understand simply creating a FTC for an object in a publication will not cause that FTC to be replicated to the subscribers. I have scripted out the command and tried to use sp_addscriptexec to push it to the subscriber. When I do this, I get the following error:

Last 183 characters in 'sqlcmd' output buffer: Changed database context to 'database'.
Msg 574, Level 16, State 1, Server SQLSERVER, Line 2
CREATE FULLTEXT CATALOG statement cannot be used inside a user transaction.

Also, when this script is run directly from the subscriber, it works fine (but since the subscriber is our production machine, I'd prefer to not have to do it that way). I believe I can reinitialize the publication and have the FTC pushed to the subscriber, but this is not ideal either, since some of our databases can be very large and take a long time to initialize.

Is there a better way to accomplishing this other then connecting directly to the subscriber and running the script or by reinitializing the publication? Thanks for your help!

DB Engine :: DBCC Error In Full Text Internal Table?

Jul 23, 2015

I have a database that has had a full text index at some point in it's history - but no longer does. The database is currently at SQL 2012 compatibility, but it was created on SQL2000. It still appears to have a row in the internal table sys.sysftinds - but some of the column values are NULL, and NULLs are not allowed. The database fails DBCC checks because of this.

Msg 8970, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
Row error: Object ID 25, index ID 1, partition ID xxxx,
alloc unit ID xxxx (type In-row data),
page ID (1:xxxx), row ID 0. Column 'sensitivity' was created NOT NULL, but is NULL in the row.
DBCC results for 'sys.sysftinds'.

There are 1 rows in 1 pages for object "sys.sysftinds".

CHECKTABLE found 0 allocation errors and 1 consistency errors in table 'sys.sysftinds' (object ID 25).

repair_allow_data_loss is the minimum repair level for the errors found by DBCC CHECKTABLE (xxxx.sys.sysftinds).

DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator.

Running DBCC with repair_allow_data_loss has not worked.

Full-index Does Not Fully Populate When Doing Start Full Population

Nov 5, 2007

I have sql server 2000. I copied a database from one server to another. I have one table that has a full-text index. When I transferred over the database, the index still existed, but was not populated. I made sure the path for the file is pointing to a new correct location. I did "start full population". It only populated one entry @ 1MB. On the old server the index is 100MB with more than 3 million records.

I tried rebuilding, re-creating, and it all works, but when I run "start full population", it only populates 1 record. I double checked the table in question and it has over 3 million records and proper primary key.

How do I resolve this.

[MSSQL] Blob-upload In Table With Full Text Index Goes Slow

Oct 31, 2005

i have a MSSQL 2000 database with about 30 tables in it. On one of those tables i've defined an full text index on an image field. In this table are around 500 records with binary files.

it functioned well for a time but now when i try to upload a file into the table this goes extremely slow (300 KB takes over 3 minutes).

i tried disabling "change tracking" but this didn't help a thing

adding blobs to other tables (without fulltext index on it) still goes fast.

what could be a reason that the uploading goes so slow??
