How To Move One Database File From One Server To Another Withour Restoring
May 13, 2004
I am moving a database from one server to another. I am going to replace the old server to the new one. I heard that you can move the datfiles and put them in the same directory, and sql server will pickup the datafiles based on the system tables. Is this possible, and what are the steps to get this to work. Thanks for the help in advance.

I want to move my database file to a new directory, I search in MS and I use the following steps:
USE master;
SELECT name, physical_name AS CurrentLocation, state_desc
FROM sys.master_files
WHERE database_id = DB_ID(N'test');
ALTER DATABASE test SET OFFLINE;
ALTER DATABASE test
MODIFY FILE ( NAME = test_Log,
FILENAME = 'D:Databases est_log.ldf');
ALTER DATABASE test
MODIFY FILE ( NAME = test,
FILENAME = 'D:Databases est.mdf');
ALTER DATABASE test
MODIFY FILE ( NAME = test_Log,
FILENAME = 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData est_log.ldf');
ALTER DATABASE test SET ONLINE;
But I had the following errors:
Msg 5120, Level 16, State 101, Line 1
Unable to open the physical file "D:Databases est.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(error not found)".
Msg 5120, Level 16, State 101, Line 1
Unable to open the physical file "D:Databases est_log.ldf". Operating system error 5: "5(error not found)".
File activation failure. The physical file name "D:Databases est_log.ldf" may be incorrect.
Msg 945, Level 14, State 2, Line 1
Database 'test' cannot be opened due to inaccessible files or insufficient memory or disk space. See the SQL Server errorlog for details.
Msg 5069, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
ALTER DATABASE statement failed.
Can someone tell me how to move my database to another directory (in the same server instance)?
Thanks ina dvance

I am trying to restore a database called BCC_DB (I'm actually just needing one table opened to find some data in one column) so I created a blank database called BCCrestore.
I have a .bak file called BCC_DB_backup_201505020017.bak.
I placed it in my local drive C:BCC_DB_backup_201505020017.bak and tried the SQL:
RESTORE DATABASE BCCrestore FROM DISK = 'C:BCC_DB_backup_201505020017.bak'
GO
I get an error:
Msg 3201, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot open backup device 'C:BCC_DB_backup_201505020017.bak'. Operating system error 2(The system cannot find the file specified.).

Hello Everyone,
I am trying to restore a bak file which came with code for a tutorial. I think it is safe to restore, but sql server 2005 express has the following problem when I try to restore it.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express------------------------------
Restore failed for Server 'BOBSQLEXPRESS'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.3042.00&EvtSrc=Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.ExceptionTemplates.FailedOperationExceptionText&EvtID=Restore+Server&LinkId=20476
------------------------------ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The operating system returned the error '5(Access is denied.)' while attempting 'RestoreContainer::ValidateTargetForCreation' on 'C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDashboard.mdf'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.3042.00&LinkId=20476
The links given for help have no information about the problem and I'm not really sure where I should be looking to solve this. I'm a newbie to databases so if you could provide a step-by-step answer that would be best. Thanks in advance.

I'm using SQL Server 2000 and need to restore a large database onto a different node. The problem is the original database has a 74 gb first datafile and the node where I need to restore it doesn't have a single drive that big. I'm trying to use a backup of the original database and restore it into an existing database on another node and am using the move options to put the files in the right places.
Is there a way I run the restore to split the 74 gb datafile across drives on my target node?
Thanks for any help.

I'm working on a restore procedure for the case where all MDF filesare missing, but the LDF files are all intact. A full backup is doneevery 24 hours, and a log backup is done every 3 hours. Afterrestoring the last full + log backups, is it at all possible to usethe LDF files to recover data from that point up to a newer point intime?I've found a post which explains how to do this on SQL Server 2000<http://groups.google.com/group/comp...s.ms-sqlserver/browse_thread/thread/3ef5c7cbc0a83334/f3b0c70811d35ed7>, but step 4fails with the following error message:BACKUP LOG cannot be performed because there is no current databasebackup.

Is this even possible? I tried to move an existing Sql Server Express .mdf file to SQL Server 2000 by copying the .mdf file to the server's folder and then tried to attach it. I get:
Error 602: Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID 9, object ID 1, index ID1. Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes.
I realize that I'm moving back a version in SQL, however the structure of the database is very simple. Does anyone know?
Even if I can just script the thing to SQL 2000 would be helpful, however the .mdf is a file within my ASP.Net site, and does not show up in my Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express under the appropriate SERVERNAMESQLEXPRESS either, so I can't figure out how to script it out?

I did tried the encryption on server "A" for database "AdventureWorks2012". Then I tried to restore to server "B". There was the certificate issue, and I thought "of course : it's encrypted ! Let's deactivate it". So here I go "ALTER DATABASE AdventureWorks2012 SET ENCYRPTION OFF".I look at sys.databases : not encrypted.I backup using no encryption, I verify using msdb.dbo.backupset : not encrypted.
I move my backup to my other server where encryption was never configured (so no certificate, nothing...), and I have the error :
Msg 33111, Level 16, State 3, Line 1

I want to restore a database (from an encrypted .bak file) - but *not* over the live original if you take my meaning. Encryption is the standard AES-256 that comes with Sql Server 2014 btw. I don't want the original touched/altered in any way. I would like to capture a success message if possible.I can extract the physical device name of the database in question using the following code:
SELECT physical_device_name, *
FROM msdb.dbo.backupmediafamily
WHERE media_set_id =(SELECT TOP 1 media_set_id
FROM msdb.dbo.backupset
WHERE database_name='MyDatabase'
AND type='D'
ORDER BY backup_start_date DESC)
I would like if the newly restored database was rename to something different than 'MyDatabase' (as shown above) and has different logs than the original. If possible, and capture a success message when restored.

I did a full backup of a db from one server(Express2005) and trying to restore it to a different instance of SQL2005 on the same development machine. (Also had some fulltext columns if that means anything)
Many failures but finally got it to report all was successful except the icon in Object Explorer shows (Restoring...) with no indication of any real activity going on. It's a tiny database with hardly any data in it.
Just not sure what the heck is going on there. It also won't let me into the database until this the (Restoring...) goes away.
Any advice on how to get this thing finished out?

Now I installed a new box with SQL server on it (box B).
How do I move the database from box A to box B?
What are the steps involved? What is the easiest way to do it?
What files need to be copied over?
Thanks,

I am running SQL Server 2000.
I have about 300 tables scattered across 3 databases that I am trying to consolidate into a single database. There are other tables within these 3 databases that I don't wish to consolidate (so I don't want to copy the full database).
What are my options to move these tables to the consolidated database?
Are there options beyond, the pain and extensive run-time of copying from the DTS wizard into the new database (plus the indices won't copy will they?) or writing code that creates tables in the new database, populates them with data from the old tables and then deletes the old tables?
My understanding is sp_rename won't work with two separate databases --i.e., your destination db must be the same as the db of the object you are renaming. (if my understanding is wrong, that would seem to be the easiest way to accomplish this)
Thanks,

Hi!
I attempted to backup a database on server x and restore it on a database on server y. The details are as follows.
Server X
Database name : dbx
Size :263.88MB (Unrestricted filegrowth option set)
Logical files : dbx_data, dbx_log
Physical files : e:mssql7datadbx_data.mdf, f:databaselogsdbx_log.ldf
Server Y
Database name : dby
Size :1MB (Unrestricted filegrowth option set)
Logical files : dby_data, dby_log
Physical files : d:mssql7datadby_data.mdf, d:mssql7datadby_log.ldf
I created a full database backup of dbx on server x at the location, f:ackupsdbx_083099_10.30AM. The size of the file is 272MB. I zipped the file. Copied the file, dbx_083099_10.30AM.xip over to d:ackups of server y. I unzipped the file at server y to the location, d:ackupsdbx_083099_10.30AMdbx_083099_10.30AM.
I now tried to restore this backup on server y using the statement,
restore database dby from disk = 'd:ackupsdbx_083099_10.30AMdbx_083099_10.30AM
with replace,
move 'dbx_data' to 'd:mssql7datadby_data.mdf',
move 'dbx_log' to 'd:mssql7datadby_log.ldf'
I get the following errors :
Server: Msg 3257, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
There is insufficient free space on disk volume 'd:' to create the database. The database requires 3219128320 additional free bytes, while only 2047102976 bytes are available.
Server: Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Backup or restore operation terminating abnormally.
Error log shows,
