How To Optimize Database Size In SQL Server 2000
Sep 4, 2006
I designed a database for daily reporting system. It involves mainly INSERT operations and data retrieval. The problem here is the size of database is growing rapidly beyond the estimation. I changed the datatypes from int to tinyint, even after that i didn't find any difference in size of the database. Please suggest me solution by which i can optimize the database size also suggest me some tips by which i can estimate the database size. Please respond at the earliest possible.

Thanks in advance.

I am having a bit of a mare on the database backup front - i.e. monster
DB, not a great deal of space to back it up into.
As I do the backup, the file on the disk seems to stay at 2KB
How does the file get written? Is there a temp somewhere first?
Cheers in advance - Dave

Am running several databases on SQL server 2000.
Have several overnight jobs for interface and maintenance, etc.
Log file on one specific database increases in size 10 fold overnight. Unable to trace why.
I have a job to truncate the logs before the final overnight backup. Several times a week the job hangs - on nights when log file expands, so it is a pain. Able to resolve the issue after the event, but do not understand why the log file increases in size (at that time) in the first place. No other activity on the server at the time.

Hi all.
On the MS website (at this URL: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/evaluation/overview/default.asp) it says that the Standard edition of SQL Server 2000 has a database size limit of 1,048,516 terabytes.
Talking to a friend, he tells me this is not true, and that it has a database size limit of 12gb.
Is Microsofts site incorrect, or is my friend lost?
Cheers! :-)

Good evening,
I have a SQL Server 2005 database installed, serving as back-end DB, for an ASP.Net 2 application. Currently the database size is nearly 800Mb with recovery mode set to Simple. Every single day a maintenance job runs shrinking the db size, reorganizing indexes and statistics, etc.
Since I'm not an expert in SQL Server Administration I'm trying to figure out if this space is really necessary. The previous version of this application was running under PHP5 and MySql 4. After a year, with pretty much the same load as the current version, the database size was arround 370Mb. With the SQL Server it's already -800Mb after 3 months.
Pretty much my guess is that I'm doing something wrong. I just don't have any idea of what might be going on. If one of you guys could throw in some ideas on how to check if this size was really necessary and, if not, how to reduce it, I'd be very thankful.
Best regards,
ahkaru

Hi,We are in the process of selecting a database for a data warehouse typeapplication. I want to get a feel for how big can a SQL Server databaseget. As per Microsoft, it can be multiple terabytes. Can you tell meWhat is the biggest size SQL server database you manage? (I understandbig is a relative term. I consider 500+ Gig as big).Do you see any major performance problems due to size of the database?(Given that the database is designed optimally).Really appreciate your help. Thanks,Joseph

Hi,
i use this script that show me the size of each table and do the sum of all the table size.
SELECT
X.[name],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[rows]), 1), '.00', '') AS [rows],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[reserved]), 1), '.00', '') AS [reserved],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[data]), 1), '.00', '') AS [data],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[index_size]), 1), '.00', '') AS [index_size],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[unused]), 1), '.00', '') AS [unused]
FROM
(SELECT
CAST(object_name(id) AS varchar(50)) AS [name],
SUM(CASE WHEN indid < 2 THEN CONVERT(bigint, [rows]) END) AS [rows],
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, reserved)) * 8 AS reserved,
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, dpages)) * 8 AS data,
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, used) - CONVERT(bigint, dpages)) * 8 AS index_size,
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, reserved) - CONVERT(bigint, used)) * 8 AS unused
FROM sysindexes WITH (NOLOCK)
WHERE sysindexes.indid IN (0, 1, 255)
AND sysindexes.id > 100
AND object_name(sysindexes.id) <> 'dtproperties'
GROUP BY sysindexes.id WITH ROLLUP) AS X
ORDER BY X.[name]
the problem is that the sum of all tables is not the same size when i make a full database backup.
example of this is when i run this query against my database i see a sum of 111,899 KB that they are 111MB,but when
i do full backup to that database the size of this full backup is 1.5GB,why is that and where this size come from?

I am having an issue in determining the correct size of a table.
I have a tableA in some DB on transaction server (Enterprise Edition), this table is being replicated in reporting server DB (Standard edition).
When I check the space used by this table in both the databases i see noticeable difference.
I am using EXEC sp_spaceused 'tableA' to determine the space.
Transaction Server
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
name rows reserveddata index_size unused
TableA1439999 695416 KB507048 KB182912 KB 5456 KB
Reporting Server
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
name rows reserveddata index_size unused
TableA1439999 656904 KB483664 KB172680 KB 560 KB
So I wanted to know what could be the possible reasons for this difference ?

I have an application that calculates a bunch of numbers and then inserts them into a table (or updates a record in the table if it exists). In my test environment it is issuing 100 insert or update requests to the server per second and it could run for several hours. After a the first several hundred requests, the SQL server is bogging down (processor at 90-100%) and the application slows down while it waits on SQL to update the database. What would be the best way to optimize this app? Would it help to loop through all my insert/update requests and then send them as one big batch of statements to the server (per 1000 requests or something)? Is there a better way of doing this? Thanks!

I am building a table change log that will track each attribute update and include the original and new values.
[BatchYearMonthKey] [int] NULL,
[BatchYearMonthDayKey] [int] NULL,
[AccountID] [varchar](200) NULL,
[Attribute] [varchar] (200) NULL,
[Old_ValueAtrDefault] [varchar] (200) NULL,
[New_ValueAtrDefault] [varchar] (200) NULL,
[Old_ValueAtrLong] [varchar] (max) NULL,
[New_ValueAtrLong] [varchar] (max) NULL
The challenge that the spectrum of varchar lengths across the table. I have one attribute that requires varchar(max) and all other attributes (about 40) are varchar (200).
I am trying to accomplish the following:
Account ID Status
1 Enabled
Now changed to
AccountID Status
1 Disabled
My log table will look like the following:
[BatchYearMonthKey] BatchYearMonthDayKey] [AccountID] [Attribute] [Old_ValueAtrDefault] [New_ValueAtrDefault] [Old_ValueAtrLong] [New_ValueAtrLong]
201504 20150409 1 Status Enabled Disabled NULL NULL
My question:
I created two fields (Old_ValueAtrLong and New_ValueAtrLong) dedicated for the one attribute that is a varchar (max). I was trying to avoid storing [Status] for example that's a varchar(200) in a field that is varchar(max). Is this the right approach? Or are there other recommendations in how to handle storing the data in the most efficient manner?

Problem description
There are two sql servers with the same database in different locations with replication running on them. Users in the two locations insert or update date on there own database through an ms access application . The data are replicated to both servers.
Someone wanted a copy of the database and they dropped replication, but users continue to modify and add data on both servers and so replication could not be back again without merging the two databases as one again and restarting replication.
My job was to merge the databases and make replication work and after allot of work all is fine.
I copy and attached the database on my pc that I set up as a server and did the job. Then I went back on both servers that had replication running before I attached the database and set the subscriber and publisher and all was fine to that point.
The database has six groups with permissions on them and many database users on each location. Both the groups and the users show on the database.
I create a new login and user and I add him to the groups to get the permissions.
Now back on a user pc I login with the new user name run the ms access application and try to add some new records, but I get errors that I cannot insert null values to two of the fields in several tables in the database.
This was not happening before and the database was recording the values in those fields namely the user name and the date that the new record was created.
After some reading I found out that I might need to set the groups and permissions on the views and tables from the beging but Im not an expert.
Any ideas?
Thanks allot
George
