As you all know, in Framework 2.0 on the desktop platform you have the convenient "abstract" Db* classes that can be used to write more generic code. For instance System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection inherits from System.Data.Common.DbConnection, and so forth. Now the docs clearly say that this applies to the corresponding classes in the Compact Framework. And i have seen this implied by other web searchs I've done. However this does not seem to be the case -- or, I'm missing something somewhere.
The following simple code on the desktop platform compiles OK:
using System.Data; using System.Data.Common; using System.Data.SqlClient; DbConnection conn = new SqlConnection();
However it doesn't compile in a compact framework project: "Cannot implicitly convert type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection' to 'System.Data.Common.DbConnection'".
Reflector also indicates that the Compact Framework class doesn't inherit from DbConnection.
OK, so am I missing something here, or what was the reason that Microsoft did it differently??
Anyone have a recommendation on SSIS classes (providers and instructors)? It looks like Brian Knight's classes must be at the top of the list. His classes are always full!
I just recently updated to SSDT 12.0.50512.0 using Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate. I typically use SSDT Schema Compare to synchronize my schema across multiple databases and different environments. After updating i encountered a major bug while updating our production schema.Typically during schema compare, the compare will prompt me to drop users and user roles from the database as they are not present in the project. I will exclude these so they database users and their roles aren't affected. After the update to SSDT I noticed that schema compare was only prompting me to drop the User, but didn't show anything about the user's roles. Not thinking much of it I went through my usual task of updating all the production databases. I soon found out that this did in fact remove the user roles even though it showed NOTHING in the schema compare UI indicating it would do so.
GO PRINT N'Dropping <unnamed>...';
GO EXECUTE sp_droprolemember @rolename = N'db_datareader', @membername = N'dbuser';
GO PRINT N'Dropping <unnamed>...';
GO EXECUTE sp_droprolemember @rolename = N'db_datawriter', @membername = N'dbuser';
You could say this is partially my fault for not checking the generated script before running it, but after months of this routine task I've never had an issue until this update.i'm not seeing the changes that will happen to my user roles in the schema compare UI?Â
I used SSEUtil to add a schema to my database but I am having problems. Used these steps:SSEUtil -c> USE "c:Rich.mdf"> GO>!RUN Resume.SQL//indicates success>SELECT * FROM SYS.XML_SCHEMA_COLLECTIONS>GO//schema not shown in list> USE master>GO>SELECT * FROM SYS.XML_SCHEMA_COLLECTIONS>GO//schema is shown in the queryIt appears that the schema is not added to the desired database, so when I try to use the schema in Visual Studio, the schema does not appear when I connect to the Rich.mdf database. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong or why this might be happening?ThanksKevin
I have following data in my table. In some of the elements there can be missing nodes. I need to find out missing nodes from each element and insert default node if it doesnt exist so it validates with schena.from below exmaple in the third element location node is missing and i would like to add default node if we see any of these.
Input CREATE TABLE #t (xmlfile XML) INSERT INTO #t        [code]....
Some times Location tag name can be Location10. like <Location10>NY</Location10>.In this case i need to update <Location10> to <Location> to validate with XML schema.
I seem to having a really hard time when making schema changes. Adding a new fact table, renaming a dimension column, adding a new measure or renaming an existing one. Somehow these things tend to cause problems at one or more stages - either running the schema wizard or processing the cube.So I ask, what is your overall strategy for adding or updating new schema updates into your DB with regards to the SSAS project?
Another way to ask this - is how often do you find yourself deleting the the DSV and / or the whole cube and starting over because some schema change lead to a cascade of issues that just didnt seem to want to let you correct them?
I'm still trying to transition from a DB-centric view to an OO view, and I could use some help from any of you OO-design wizards out there. A very common db representation is Table A, Table B, and Table A_B, which maps the two in a one-to-many relation. E.g., create table Companies ( companyId int, name varchar ); create table Products ( productId int, name varchar ); create table Companies_Products ( companyId int, productId int ); So how does this translate into object-land? I started with: public class Product public id as integer public name as string end class public clas Company public id as integer public name as string public products as generic.list(of Product) end class OK, so far, so good -- I've represented most of my data. But I've lost some important information: given a Product object, I have no easy way to find out which company sells it. SQL: scan the Companies_Products table OO: iterate through companies, nested iteration through company.products. Do I just add a function to my data access layer that does the lookup? Is that allowed? On a side note: can anyone recommend a good intro to OO design specifically for database programmers? It seems like most of my confusion comes from issues of translating tables into classes. Thanks!
I am using SQLXML to pass data back and forth, well I am trying to. Itry to follow a tutorial but it didn't work completely. Here is myproblem. After everything executes with NO errors, my class has nodata. Here were my steps.1. In Query Analyzer, I ran my Select statement....Select * From Notifications Where UserID = '4192' and ParentID ISNULL for XML AUTOIt returned...<Notifications ID="1" UserID="4192"CreatedWhen="2004-08-31T00:00:00" ModifiedWhen="2004-08-31T00:00:00"ModifiedBy="1" Class="1" Name="CONSILIUMSOFT" Enabled="1"/>2. I saved the result in Test.xml.3. Ran XSD on it. C:Test>XSD TEST.XMLThis MS utility wrote out the schema file, TEST.XSD4. Ran XSD on it to create the class. C:Test>XSD TEST.XSD /classes/language:csThis MS utility wrote out the CS class file, TEST.cs5. Added the CS file to my project, create a class around it and thecode is below.My problem is that when I put a break point where is says BR (in thecode below), pNotifications has no data in it. All the values areNULL.ANY ideas? I getting desperate....I should mention that I am doingthis in ASP.NET and SQL 2000 sp3Ralph Kraussewww.consiliumsoft.comUse the START button? I am trying to use VB.NET to run SSIS packages. However I don't have the various dts namespaces available. When I attempt to import them I only have Microsoft.SqlServer.Server in intellisense.
I am running on XP sp2, VS 2005 (full install) and even went so far as to install sql 2005 sp1 full install on my local machine.
What gives with only having Microsoft.SqlServer.Server available?
I show business objects in the ReportViewer as it is described in the MSDN article [1]. In the article they only use intrinsic types like int and string as properties of the business object.
My business objects contains also structs and classes (e.g. Point) as Properties. I expected the Reporting Services to call the ToString() method if it is not an intrinsic type. But it only shows the error string "#Error" in the TextBox.
How can I show a Struct property of my business object as a report value?

I work on the Clinical Surgery Department Data Application. The patient gets through the Admission, Surgery, PostSurgery and Discharge stages during his staying in the department. The Doctors just insert their medical data in to the different tables. I have three main classes: User, Patient and Portfolio ( patients portfolio ) and all the business bases on these classes. The problem is with the Classes per Medical Data Tables. The Medical tables should exist cause it includes the medical data about the patient however what is not clear: Whether I should create Business and Entity classes per each medical data table ( and this is something like 50 tables ) or I should insert all the functions in the Portfolio class and then there will be a mess of functions in one class? What is the accepted way to perform it ?
Hopefully someone out there will be able to help me with this question. I'm trying to setup my C# program to use the Backup and Restore classes to perform backups and restores on an SQL Express 2005 database.
From the documentation I've read... it seems that when you go to restore the database, it's a good idea to backup the current transaction log. But when I do this using the Backup.SqlBackup method I get an error saying that no database backup is detected so a log backup can't occur. I'm not sure if this has something to do with the fact that I moved my backup files from the default SQL Express/Server Backup folder to a different location. Shouldn't it know I've already performed a backup though?
And does anyone know how to set a parameter to backup to a different file location than the default? I've been doing a backup then a file move. Works the same, but it would be nice to have everything together in the Backup object.
Locally I develop in SQL server 2005 enterprise. Recently I recreated my db on the server of my hosting company (in sql server 2005 express).I basically recreated the tables and copied the data in it.I now receive the following error when I hit the DB:The 'System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider' requires a database schema compatible with schema version '1'. However, the current database schema is not compatible with this version. You may need to either install a compatible schema with aspnet_regsql.exe (available in the framework installation directory), or upgrade the provider to a newer version.I heard something about running aspnet_regsql.exe, but I dont have that access to the DB. Also I dont know if this command does anything more than creating the membership tables and filling it with some default data...Any other solutions/thought on what this can be?Thanks!
Hello everybody!I'm using ASP.NET 3.5, MSSQL 2005I bought virtual web hosting .On new user registrations i have an error =(The 'System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider' requires a database schema compatible with schema version '1'. However, the current database schema is not compatible with this version. You may need to either install a compatible schema with aspnet_regsql.exe (available in the framework installation directory), or upgrade the provider to a newer version. On my virtual machine it work fine but on web hosting i have an error =(What can you propose to me?
I would like to use SSIS tool to move the data from one database schema to another database schema.
For example:
Source table has
1. UserName (varchar 20) (no null)
2. Email (varchar 50) (can be null)
Destination table has
1. UserID (uniqueidentifier - GUID)
2. UserName (varchar 50) (no null)
3. EmailAddress (nvarchar 50) (can be null)
4. DateTime
Questions:
1. What controls do I use in my Data Flow to make data move between databases with different data types and include new value in UserID as a new GUID and DateTime as a date (GETDATE)?
OLE DB Source, OLE DB Destination, Data Converson and .....
How do I insert Guid and Date at the same time?
2. I have many tables to do data moving. Any sugestions? How do I architect my project? If I create many data flows for each table - it will look complicated.
Hello! I try to get a list of ConditionsVersion where Version is MAX for each ConditionsVersion. I tried something like this (as seen on http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vcsharp/aa336747.aspx#maxGrouped):
1 List<ConditionsVersion> list = (from cv in ConditionsVersions2 group cv by cv.FKConditions into cv3 select new { 4 PKConditions = cv.PKConditions,5 FKConditions = cv.FKConditions,6 MaxVersion = cv.GroupBy.Max(cv => cv.Version)7 CTimestamp = cv.Timestamp8 }).ToList();
But it doesn't work. It would be great if someone knows why. Thank you!
Well, just played a little bit with that new thing from Microsoft. Genius! Microsoft presented that step backwards as a step forward.
Say good bye to the 3-tier architecture, now any programmer, after 1 week training, will be able to put SELECT * into the source code. No more stored procedures and logic on a server. No more ugly WHERE clauses. Just SELECT * and pass all records in a loop :)
When I looked at the queries, generated by LINQ in SQL profiler, I noticed that they are generated automatically using the same pattern. It is obvious, of course, but now it would be really difficult to trace a problematic query back to the C# code. All updates to table X will look like as identical twins!
On the other side, it is not so bad. We will have soon a lot of projects, failing when they go to the production and face the real volumes of data. And a long queue of companies, crying and asking to save them. Perfect “job security. Please, use LINQ! Port all your code to LINQ immediately (Laughing demonically like Dr. Evil)
Hm… a second thought, but what could we suggest to these companies, having performance problems with LINQ 3rd party applications, when there is no source code? Now we could at least modify some stored procedures, and with LINQ looks like the only recommendation could be “contact a developer of that application or buy more a powerful server.
Hullo am using Asp.Net 3.5, I want to create a usercontrol that is supported to all projects to upload file into sqlserver, the user just give the database connection string, tablename, column name depending upon their need, here I develop the code using LINQ technology. I Write a class with simple format like below,
using System; using System.Data; using System.Configuration; using System.Linq; using System.Web; using System.Web.Security; using System.Web.UI; using System.Web.UI.HtmlControls; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; using System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts; using System.Xml.Linq; using System.Data.Linq;
This is working but, this is suitable only for single table, I expect depending upon the user input automaticaly the tablename, column name will change in the yellow block codes . Is there any way to update the tablename , columnname from any other class?
I'm new to ASP/VS/Linq and I'm having a small problem. I have one table setup in SQL Server Express 2005 through Visual Studio 2008. The table name is "Users" and has three columns (accountID, userName, email). AccountID is the primary key and set to auto incriment. I've added a couple of records by hand and it works. I have a single form with a button, a label, and two text boxes. The button code is below. After entering some fake data that does not already exist in the database and clicking the button I get this. Cannot insert explicit value for identity column in table 'Users' when IDENTITY_INSERT is set to OFF. I understand that it is trying to insert something into the accountID field but I don't understand why since I'm only providing a username and e-mail address to insert. Your help is greatly appreciated.protected void Button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { MyDatabaseDataContext db = new MyDatabaseDataContext(); var query = from u in db.Users where u.email == txtEmail.Text select u;
var count = query.Count(); if (count == 0) { //Create a new user object. User newUser = new User();
//Add the user to the User table. db.Users.InsertOnSubmit(newUser); db.SubmitChanges(); } else { Label1.Text = txtEmail.Text + " already exists in the database."; }
I have a supplier table with all my suppliers in it. I list them in a gridview. In this gridview, there is a link next to each record to an edit page. Below is the code for the edit page. Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load Dim db As New orderLinqDataContext
Dim q = db.selectSupplierByID(Request.QueryString("id")) Dim r As New System.Data.DataTable
txtFriend.Text = q(0).friendlyName txtAdd1.Text = q(0).address1 txtAdd2.Text = q(0).address2 txtAdd3.Text = q(0).address3 txtAdd4.Text = q(0).address4 txtName.Text = q(0).supplierName txtPhone.Text = q(0).phone txtFax.Text = q(0).fax txtPostCode.Text = q(0).postCode End Sub This causes a runtime error. The error is: "The query results cannot be enumerated more than once." and the txtAdd1.text line is highlighted. How am I supposed to get at the data so I can fill my text boxes this way? Thanks,
var query = from cloc in context.t_companylocs where (cloc.ref_company == companyid) && (cloc.street == attributes["Street"]) && (cloc.postalcode == attributes["Postalcode"]) && (cloc.country in countrylist) && (cloc.city in citylist) select cloc; attributes is a Dictionary<string, string> object.countrylist and citylist are List<string> objects.Of course the syntax above doesn't work. It's basically what I'm trying to achieve :-)A quick and dirty solution would be to just drop the two where constraints containing the "where in" statement and handle that part in the following foreach() loop.Can anyone please explain how you would do it properly?regards
Does anyone have a good example of how to insert data using System.Data.Linq? All the examples I've seen do something likeNorthwindDataContext db = new NorthwindDataContext();var x = new Product() {...}; db.Products.Add(x);db.SubmitChanges(); However I'm not seeing an Add method on System.Data.Linq.Table<T>. Has this changed? Could I somehow not be generating my model correctly?
I would like to use LINQ to generate a sql statement that does not use LIKE, but rather uses CONTAINS. Is this possible? If not, my second question is whether or not I can parameterize a SqlCommand that uses CONTAINS. For example the following statement works just fine when I pass in the parameter via SqlCommand.Parameters.AddWithValue()SELECT * FROM [event] WHERE CONTAINS(comments, @searchTerm1)However, the following results in a variable not defined error.SELECT * FROM [event] WHERE (comments LIKE @searchTerm1)Any ideas? Thanks for your help.
Hi there, In 2005.NET, if I used an asp:repeater, I would load the data from source and then manipulate it like so://load the data from source using a predefined connection and SQL Statement.private void LoadMyDataFromSource(){ try { connection.Open(); OleDbDataReader myReader = comm.ExecuteReader(); rptrCatList.DataSource = myReader; rptrCatList.DataBind(); myReader.Close(); } finally { connection.Close(); }} //catch the ItemDataBound event and manipulate the data how I wish before it's loaded into the Repeater.protected void rptrCatList_ItemDataBound(object sender, RepeaterItemEventArgs e) { if (e.Item.ItemType == ListItemType.Item || e.Item.ItemType == ListItemType.AlternatingItem) { int title = 4; //this is the index of the column I wish to manipulate((Label)e.Item.FindControl("lblTitle")).Text = ((IDataRecord)e.Item.DataItem).GetString(title) + ":" } }This would give me all the flexbility I ever needed. But now I wish to use linq and since the IDataRecord relies on dataReader sources, I cannot obtain the same flexbility. Can anyone point me in the right direction for obtaining the same kind of flexbility but using a linq-to-SQL dataContext? I wish to manipulate mostData that comes through from my source, so: //loadng the data in via my linq-to-sql context.private void LoadProducts() { MyDataContext db = new MyDataContext (); var all = from p in db.Products_IncontinenceStandards where p.Product_Cat == "Category1" select p; rpterCat.DataSource = all; rpterCat.DataBind(); }This is where I get stuck because, even though I can still capture the ItemDataBound event since I have databound the Repeater to the linqSource, I can't access the individual fields (or this is what I think I can't do!), Does anyone know how to relate to this so I can create the same effect? Many Thanks,Nathan Channon
