Using @@IDENTITY In The Sqldatasource Insert Command

Jan 11, 2008

I apologise if i have not posted this in the correct Topic before i start. But was uncertain where to post this query.
This is my first project in ASP.NET, MS Visual Web Developer 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express. I have relatively little experience, so please bare with me.
I have managed to create a form that inserts data into a table and then inserts the Automatically Created Primary Key(as a foreign key) in another table. I have done this by inserting what is highlighted in red in the code of my InsertCommand below (Please scroll across to the end of the code):-InsertCommand="INSERT INTO [PrinterModel] ([Model], [PrinterMakeID], [CartridgeCode], [PartCode], [Duplex], [NIC], [Wireless], [Parallel], [USB], [Colour], [PrinterTypeID]) VALUES (@Model, @PrinterMakeID, @CartridgeCode, @PartCode, @Duplex, @NIC, @Wireless, @Parallel, @USB, @Colour, @PrinterTypeID) INSERT INTO [Model] ([PrinterModelID],[TypeID]) VALUES (@@IDENTITY, 3)" Can you see any problems that may arise from using this method. This project is an Asset Management System and will be used by no more than a handful of users. My Concern is the use of the @@IDENTITY (As it only stores the last Key used). Should I be using it here? If there is more than one user inserting into tables (Chances of this happening are very low), will the correct Primary key be insert to the table in the above code?Thank you for your comments.

Problem With @@identity Return In Stored Procedure Insert.

Nov 24, 2003

I'm having a problem I do an insert into a table but I want to return the value of the identity field of that insert so I can email a confirmation. For some reason this code doesn't work.
Below is the stored procedure I'm calling and below that the code I'm using. What am I doing wrong. The value I have returned is null when it should be a number. Any suggestions. Why does finalMagicNum2 come back null when it should grab the identity field of the inserted record.

CREATE PROCEDURE addMagicRecTest

@theSubject int,
@theFirstName nvarchar(50)=null
@theLastName nvarchar(75)=null

' Subject for new Wac Ticket

' Last Name Field
magicCommand.SelectCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@theLastName", SqlDbType.NVarChar, 75))
magicCommand.SelectCommand.Parameters("@theLastName").Value = orderLastName

DSMagic = new DataSet()
magicCommand.Fill(DSMagic,"employees")

If DSMagic.Tables("_smdba_._telmaste_").Rows.Count > 0 Then
finalMagicNum2 = DSMagic.Tables("_smdba_._telmaste_").Rows(0)("finalMagic").toString
End If

ExecuteScalar Returns 0 (null) But INSERT Is Successful.

Sep 25, 2007

I have code that has worked just fine for some time, and now all of the sudden I am having an issue. I have a simple INSERT statement built and then make the following call:

RecordID = cmd.ExecuteScalar

I have never had a problem with this before. The RecordID of the newly inserted record is returned into the RecordID Integer varibale. All of the sudden, the varibale has a value of 0 (null I assume is being returned), but yet the INSERT worked just fine. I can check the table in SQL and it is populated with no issues.

No exception is thrown of any type or anything. Does anybody know what may be happening?

Last GASP On Insert Row In Table With Identity Field, And Get New Identity Back ?

Jul 9, 2006

While I have learned a lot from this thread I am still basically confused about the issues involved.

.I wanted to INSERT a record in a parent table, get the Identity back and use it in a child table. Seems simple.

To my knowledge, mine would be the only process running that would update these tables. I was told that there is no guarantee, because the OLEDB provider could write the second destination row before the first, that the proper parent-child relationship would be generated as expected. It was recommended that I create my own variable in memory to hold the Identity value and use that in my SSIS package.

1. A simple example SSIS .dts example illustrating the approach of using a variable for identity would be helpful.

2. Suppose I actually had two processes updating these tables, running at the same time. Then it seems the "variable" method will also have its problems. Is there a final solution other than locking the tables involved prior to updating them or doing something crazy like using a GUID for the primary key!

3. We have done the type of parent-child inserts I originally described from t-sql for years without any apparent problems. (Maybe we were just lucky.) Is the entire issue simply a t-sql one or does SSIS add a layer of complexity beyond t-sql that needs to be addressed?

TIA,

Insert Row In Table With Identity Field, And Get New Identity Back

Jun 30, 2006

I want to insert a new record into a table with an Identity field and return the new Identify field value back to the data stream (for later insertion as a foreign key in another table).

What is the most direct way to do this in SSIS?

TIA,

P.S. Or should I pass the identity value back in a variable and not make it part of the data stream?

Is there a way to drop a column identity using TSQL?

Also, does this code look correct?

alter table cms_3a add cwid int identity(@max1, 1) <------ Error
select @max2 = max(cwid) from cms_3a
alter table cms_4a add cwtid int identity(@max2, 1) <------ Error

I do not have identities on tables cms_3a and cms_4a, but I do have an identity on cms_2a.

Return Identity In Stored Procedure

Mar 23, 1999

I have a stored procedure where I am passing in several strings which are concatenated to form an Insert SQL statement. I then return the identity value from the insert - problem is, the identity value is coming back NULL.

Here is the sp. Any ideas?

CREATE PROCEDURE sp_ExecuteInsert
@pIdentity int OUTPUT,
@pSQL1 varchar(255),
@pSQL2 varchar(255) = NULL,
@pSQL3 varchar(255) = NULL,
@pSQL4 varchar(255) = NULL,
@pSQL5 varchar(255) = NULL,
@pSQL6 varchar(255) = NULL,
@pSQL7 varchar(255) = NULL,
@pSQL8 varchar(255) = NULL
AS

EXECUTE (@pSQL1 + @pSQL2 + @pSQL3 + @pSQL4 + @pSQL5 + @pSQL6 + @pSQL7 + @pSQL8)

SELECT @pIdentity = @@IDENTITY
GO

FYI, the real problem I am trying to solve is simply to return the identity after an insert. I could write a simple insert sp that returns the identity, but my code is written to handle generic situations and build an INSERT statement as needed. So if there are any other ideas of executing an insert statement and getting the identity, please let me know.

Thanks...

SP Syntax Help - Return New Identity Value As Output Param

Feb 4, 1999

I have a stored proc that will insert a new row into a table
with the values of the parameters you pass in. I need it to
return the value of the ID that's generated by an Identity
column once the row has been written and that value has
been generated. If I just do a SELECT Max(), I could
accidentally grab a row written by someone else, right?

My current sp looks like this:

CREATE PROCEDURE sp_SaveNewLabel

-- @LabelID int output
@LabelType int
, @Logo int
, @Field01 char(30)

AS

INSERT INTO tbLabel
(LabelType
, Logo
, Field01)

VALUES
(@LabelType
, @Logo
, @PrintCC
, @Field01)

How do I grab the new LabelID (the column is int, Identity) and return
it from the stored proc. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

select @cmd = 'select uid from ' + ltrim(rtrim(@db))'..sysusers where name = ' + "'" + ltrim(rtrim(@OldOwner)) + "'"
exec (@cmd)

How can I use @OldID to hold on UID return from this statement.

When I try use:
select @cmd = 'select @OldID = uid from ' + ltrim(rtrim(@db))'..sysusers where name = ' + "'" + ltrim(rtrim(@OldOwner)) + "'"
then I'm getting a error message: @OldID not declare.

Thanks.

Insert Statement Which Uses A Return Value From An SP As An Insert Value

Jul 20, 2005

I'm quite stuck with this:I have an import table called ReferenceMatchingImport which containsdata that has been sucked from a data submission. The contents ofthis table have to be imported into another table ExternalReferencewhich has various foreign keys.This is simple but one of these keys says that the value inExternalReference.CompanyRef must be in the CompanyReference table.Of course if this is an initial import then it will not be so as partof my script I must insert a new row into CompanyReference andpopulate ExternalReference.CompanyRef with the identity column of thistable.I thought a good idea would be to use an SP which inserts a new rowand returns @@Identity as the value to insert. However this doesn'twork as far as I can tell. Is there a approved way to perform thissort of opperation? My code is below.Thanks.ALTER PROCEDURE SP00ReferenceMatchingImportAS/*Just some integrity checking going on here*/INSERT ExternalReference(ExternalSourceRef,AssetGroupRef,CompanyUnitRef,EntityTypeCode,CompanyRef, --this is the unknown ref which is returned by the spExternalReferenceTypeCode,ExternalReferenceCompanyReferenceMapTypeCode,StartDate,EndDate,LastUpdateBy,LastUpdateDate)SELECT rmi.ExternalDataSourcePropertyRef,rmi.AssetGroup,rmi.CompanyUnit,rmi.EntityType,SP01InsertIPDReference rmi.EntityType, --here I'm trying to run thesp so that I can use the return value as the insert value1,1,GETDATE(),GETDATE(),'RefMatch',GETDATE()FROM ReferenceMatchingImport rmiWHERE rmi.ExternalDataSourcePropertyRef NOT IN (SELECT ExternalSourceRefFROM ExternalReference)

How Do You Use An Identity Column When Doing A Bulk Insert Using The Bulk Insert Task Editor

Apr 18, 2008

Hello,

I'm just learning SSIS and I've hit my first bump. I am doing a bulk import from a tab delimited text file to an empty sql table that has a Idendity column defined. How do I tell the bulk insert task to skip that column when inserting from the text file. If I remove the identity column it imports the data fine, but I want to create the indentity column in the table too.

Thanks.

Need Insert Cannot Use Identity

May 6, 2002

Let me start off by saying I have posted this on:
comp.databases.ms-sqlserver

My apologies, try not to do that again.

I have a table that I am trying to insert into with data from another
table. Here is that Query:

INSERT INTO item (identifier, name, customlgtxt1, weight,mainprice,
customnumber3, customnumber4)
Select partno, name, description, weight,price, qtyprice, qty
From Import2

This seems to work fine.

My dilemma has to do with an 'id' column in that item table. This is
incrementally updated by one..ie Natural Key. I have set it to
Identity and used Set @@IDENTITY AS 'id'...worked like a charm. But
for reasons that have to do with a front end admin tool used by the
home office I can't set this column to have an Indentity property.
Screws up the insert done with the admin tool.

This is a item/price database by the way. Name of item, price,
description, qty price..etc.

So I've tried to put this trigger on the item table
CREATE TRIGGER auto_fill ON [dbo].[item]
FOR INSERT, UPDATE
AS
BEGIN
declare @maxc int
set @maxc = (select Max(id) from item)
set @maxc = @maxc +1
Select 'id' AS '@maxc',
notorderable = '0',
createdon = getdate(),
createdat = getdate(),
createdby = 'Steve',
modifiedon = getdate(),
modifiedat= getdate(),
modifiedby = 'Steve'

END

But the Insert Into statement (see above) will not work...giving the
error
"Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'id', table
'new_Catalog1v1.dbo.item"
Which I know...that's why I set it to Identity..but that cannot be.

So the question is how to set an autonumber (or natural key or I'm not
sure of the name) that updated from the max(id)table when inserting from another table.

And then...one more.

I have to update a table named UNIQUEIDS with the lastest value of the
id column (max(ID))..UNIQUEIDS keeps track of the latest value inserted
into the id column for a number of tables. Here is another trigger I
put on the item table to update the UNIQUEIDS table.

create trigger upUniqueIds_item on [dbo].[item]
for update,Insert, delete
as
begin
Select @@Identity as 'id' from inserted
Update uniqueids
set id = @@identity
Where tablename = 'item'
End

But of course this doesn't work if I can't set the columns to
IDENTITY.

I hope someone can help and I hope my explanation had made sense.
Need to increment the id field using max(id) and update another table with the last imported value of max(id). One occurs during insert..another after the insert..i think?
