I am working on query performance and tuning.
I want to save current statistics for the latter use. do SQL Server provide any utility or command (like exec dbms_stats in ORACLE and OPTDIAG in sybase) to do this?

I just want to close the window, and not be bothered with the computer's obsessive compulsive need to save everything I do. Dang it all, it sounds like my computer is working for the NSA leaving a paper trail that even a kitten with Attention Deficit Disorder on catnip could follow.
As you can tell, I am weaning myself off of Query Analyzer, and can not find the checkbox for "Don't bother me when I close a window". Anyone else come across it, yet? It does not appear to be under tools->options or query->query options.
I was using the msdn tutorial regarding sql database for vb2005 express. In that tutorial, I followed the steps as listed. But the problem is that the save button in my application during run time, it does not work. Furthermore, the code for for saving a record during run time does not work as well.
I have reinstall sql 2005 server and vb2005 express but of no use.
I have winxp with system of pentium 4.
What I should do to solve this dilemma.

I'm in stage of manually populating a database that requires me to have about a dozen tables open simultaneously. It would be great to be able to save the tables, locations and sizing so that these can be recalled and opened automatically. Currently I do a screen capture, which is pretty lame.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

I have a SQL Server 2005 x64 bit with SP2 applied and patched to KB934458-x64-ENU (9.0.3054)
I am unable to create a maintenance plan via Management Studio or save a plan in Management Studio using the wizard.
If I just try and create a new maintenance plan, then I get the following problem:
"An OLE DB error 0x80004005 (Login timeout expired) occurred while enumerating packages. A SQL statement was issued and failed."
If I try and create any maintenance plan via the wizard, I get the following problem:
"The SaveToSQLServer method has encountered OLE DB error code 0x80004005 (Login timeout expired). The SQL statement that was issued has failed."
I've doen a bit of digging on this and had initially thought it was related to the fact that I have two instances installed on 1 server. I've since updated the MsDtsSrvr.ini.xml file to point at both instances, as I thought that might have been causing the problem. That hasn't helped at all. Edited example of xml file is below:

Hello group.I have an issue, which has bothered me for a while now:I'm wondering why the column statistics, which SQL Server wants me tocreate, if I turn off auto-created statistics, are so important to theoptimizer?Example: from Northwind (with auto create stats off), I do the following:SELECT * FROM Customers WHERE Country = 'Sweden'My query plan show a clustered index scan, which is expected - no indexexists for Country. BUT, the query plan also shows, that the optimizer ismissing a statistic on Country, which tells me, that the optimizer wouldbenefit from knowing this.I cannot see why? (and I've been trying for a while now).If I create the missing statistics, nothing happens in the query plan (andwhy should it?). I could understand it, if the optimizer suggested an indexon Country - this would make sense, but if creating the missing index, queryanalyzer creates the statistics with an empty index, which seems to me to beless than usable.I've been thinking long and hard about this, but haven't been able to reacha conclusion :) It has some relevance to my work, because allowing theoptimizer to create missing statistics limits my options for designingindexes (e.g. covering) for some rather wide tables, so I'm thinking why notturn it off altogether. Currently I get mostly 0īs, but if I try and *** up a query on purpose I can get
it up to around 30... Is it milliseconds or som made up number based on clockcycles or... ?
I would also like to know if itīs possible to change the precision.

I ran the DBCC SHOW_STATISTICS command for all of my indexes; I was told that high density numbers are bad, low numbers good. I have some questions about my results, though; I'm not sure how to interpret them.
Of 48 indexes, 14 have a density of 0. Does this mean that the indexes are not selective enough? Does it mean they're garbage and I should toss them?
6 have a density of NULL. They are all primary keys. I suppose this just means that they're never used because these tables are rarely queried. Would this assumption be correct?
13 have a density of 1. I have no idea what this means.
The others have densities ranging from 0.01210491 to 0.5841165. I was told that the lower this number is, the more selective and thus more useful an index is. I think 0.5841165 is too high a number. Would this be correct?

I have found the node for Triggers in SQL Server 2005's Management Studio and tried to create a 'New Trigger...' but when I save, it saves it to an .sql file but do not attach it to the table.What am I doing wrong here? I can't seem to attach it. And where is this Assisted Editor ...i can't seem to find it anywhere

I am working on a ASP.NET 2.0 project with an SQL 2005 database.
I created a documents table with various columns including:
DocumentId and DocumentUrl
My documents will always be PDF's of SWF's (Flash Paper Files)
I will need to display this files in my web pages.
My question is:
Should I save the DocumentUrl in the database or should I save the file itself in the database?
And how can I save files in an SQL 2005 database?

Can I copy statistics in SQL Server from one environment to another without copying the actual data. For example from production to development. It is possible to copy statistics in other databases, like DB2/UDB, Oracle. Reason is to execute some poor performing SQLs and analyze their execution plan.
Did not find anything on this subject in BOL. Since statistics is stored in the statblob column of sysindexes, I tried updating statblob column of the index and rowcnt columns of table & index to mimic the copy. After my updates to 'TO' table
dbcc show_statistics ( stat_test2, stat_test2_idx)
showed the results that is identical to the statistics of my FROM table.
But when I execute a small SELECT on (FROM) table(which contains the original, required stats) and the (TO) table (where the statistics is now copied), I get 2 different execution plans. This means I am not successful in my attempt to cheat the optimizer.
Is there any more columns to be updated?
Is there another direct way to do this?

When I was using Enterprise Manager (SQL 2000) and stored my query result (to file), it was stored in Ansi Encoding.
After I upgrade to SQL Server Management Studio (2005), it seams that when I store the query result to file it's Unicode Encoded. This give me a lot of trouble, when I use other program who I must read this file. For small result set, I can open it in Notepad, save it as ANSI, and then use it in my other program. When the result set is so big that Notepad not can help me, I can't use the stored result set.
There must be a way to store my Query result in Ansi encoding, but I don't know how I can do it. Hope some one know, and can help me solve this big problem.

I want to change the default directory in sql server management studio express so that when I go to save a query, it is already pointed to the correct one. Where do I change that?

We are inserting huge amount of data (could be several millions) during a fact upload. Therefore after the upload we recomputed the statistics. In oracle this can be done using the following sql statement:
analyze table <table_name> compute statistics
Do you know if there is any equivalent statement in SQL*Server? it has to run via JDBC like a SQL statement.

In using ADO to connect to SQL Server, I'm trying to retrieve multiple datasets AND statistics that are usually returned via the OnInfoMessage event. For those that are familiar with SQL Server, I need the results returned by the SET STATISTICS IO ON and SET STATISTICS PROFILE ON options. Anyone had any luck doing this before?

One of my user was able create DTS package using DTS Wizard, working from his workstation and saved this DTS in Legacy(in Data Transaformation services) on different SQL 2005 EE SP 2(9.0.3042) production server..
At same time he has no access to msdb on this SQL 2005 server(he also not sysadmin for this server).. How this could happen..??
We have a SQL server with many legacy DTS packages. sa and Admins can open them and change them then save them but we need to allow the DTS people (Developers) the rights to save the package after they have opened it and modified it.

auto update statistics option :True,
auto update statistics asynchronously option : False
at database level
we have a weekly job, update statistics running very long time. It is created through maintenance plan using the option full scan.
Previously they tested with sampling but instead of full scan running with the sampling effected the queries.
Is there option to avoid the long time job duration.
If we didn't run the statistics manually what will happen? How do you maintain statistics with large databases
I have been asked to create a report for one of our clients. The report is pretty basic but I am concerned about the overheads with my planned approach.The report is at a table and field grain to include values for:
* Min column value
* Max column value
* Number of discrete values
* Number of populated values (not NULL)
My current plan is to have a cursor over a limited view of sys.tables and sys.columns that will run a dynamic SQL query to import the results into a table that I can then output.There must be a better way of doing this and I don't have access to any DQS services.

I want to be able to reproduce my production execution plans on development with copying data.
I can easily find user created stat in a databaseSELECT * FROM DB.sys.stats WHERE user_created=1But how do I determine what tables those stats are in? with over 6000 tables I don't feel like looking through all the tables.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm working on databases where statistics of some indexes (tables) are changing too frequently. Once I update them manually, one minute after they get 10-20% change, and five minutes after they get over 100% change. Tables get updated very frequently (multiple times in a second).
When I run a query to read from sys.stats, sys.dm_db_stats_properties and other dynamic views, I see that they were last updated when I did it manually, but the change rate overpassed the 500+20% (tables have multiples of 10K rows). Auto create and update statistics are set to true on all databases, and I don't know why sql server does not do that automatically.
I'm looking for a quick script that someone has already written to update statistics (not to rebuild or re-organise) on specific indices in specific databases - I guess loop though a table comprising of a list of databases and the indices.
I know Ola has one but I'm not look for something that is that complicated. If I cannot find one I'm going to have to write one myself - I want to try and avoid re-inventing the wheel as tomorrow I have to do this work and it's about 7K plus indices in about 10+ databases.
If I rebuild some indexes that are above 30% of average fragmentation, should I after that update statistics?
Also, How can I see if I Need to update statistics^on the tables of my database?
