Identifying What Is Using My Hard Disk Cycles

Jul 25, 2001

Hello,

I monitor a few "perfmon" counters which includes under the "system" object, "bytes transmitted/sec" and "file read bytes/sec". Every once in awhile, these counters will skyrocket, which can also be verified by the hard drive lights flickering like mad.

The only software installed on the machine is SQL Server 2K.

I was wondering if anyone knew how I could monitor within SQL 2K what process or user is using all of these cycles. If anyone could shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated. Specifically, I would like to find out which database/query is doing this to minimize in the future as this affects all of the other connections.

Thanks in advance,
Brent.

Export Data Onto Hard Disk

Mar 10, 2004

Hello People,

I have began to store binary data in my database, for example word documents, PDF's....etc.

But now my database file is growing beyond what I want, and I need to move all of the files out of the DB onto normal hard disk space.

Is there anyway, say by using a bulk copy command, that I can write all the contents of the table into a folder on my hard disk...???

My database table consists of ID(int), Filename(varchar), Filetype(varchar), Filesize(varchar), Filebody(image)

Any help would be extremely appreciated.....

Many Thanks,

Jul 20, 2007

Hi All,

We have here a WinForms Application on laptops that uses SQL Express as its database. Initially all was going well, then it was decided that the laptop Hard Drive should be encrypted. Thats when the fun started.

It is now very hit and miss as to whether we can connect to SQL and service pack 2 will not install.

So now to the question :-

Does anyone know if there are any compatablity issues with SQL 2005 Express and hard disk encryption (particularly BeCrypt).

Thanks

Hello,I am trying to recover a SQL Server 7 database from another hard diskdrive that has a corrupted Windows 2000 Advanced Server installation. Iam not able to repair the corrupted Windows 2000 Advanced Serverinstallation but the file system is intact. I have installed a new copyof SQL Server 7 onto a new hard disk and have used the sp_attach_dbsystem stored procedure to attach the database from the old hard driveinto the new installation of SQL Server 7 on the new hard drive. Thedatabase shows up in the Enterprise Manager View and all the data andstructure are there, but when I try to run a Web site that uses ODBCconnections to the database I get the following error:ODBC Error Code = 08001 (Unable to connect to data source)[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Named Pipes]Specified SQL servernot found.I have double-checked that all the NTFS permissions, ODBC DSNs, and WebServer settings are correct and when I run the SQL Server ODBC drivertest at the completion of each ODBC DSN setup, it is successfull.1) Why am I getting this ODBC error?2) What steps have I missed in the recovery process?3) If I have done something wrong recovering my database, can I stillrecover it since I still have: a) The old master database file and logfile; b) The old database (non-master) file and log file; c)A backed-up(Enterprise Manager -> Right Click A Database -> All Tasks -> BackupDatabase) copy of the old database (non-master) file; ?My System Specifications:-Windows 2000 Advanced Server-SQL Server 7-IIS 5.0-Cold Fusion Server 4.5 Professional Full EditionThanks For Your Time,Nathan

Cycles Or Multiple Cascade Paths Error

Sep 11, 2006

Hi there.I've been searching for this error specifically but I haven't found anything yet.I have these two tables (USERS and REQUESTS):USERS ( [LOGIN] [varchar] (10) NOT NULL , [NAME] [varchar] (20) NOT NULL)where LOGIN is the primary key.The problem comes when I try to create the "REQUESTS" table. In these requests there's one user who types the request. After one or two days, there's other user who aproves the request. The problem is that I need two foreign keys referencing the table "USERS".CREATE TABLE REQUESTS ([ID] [numeric](5, 0) NOT NULL ,[DATE] [datetime] NOT NULL ,[NOTES] [varchar] (100) NOT NULL ,[TYPED_BY] [varchar] (10) NOT NULL ,[APROVED BY] [varchar] (10) NULL) ON [PRIMARY]GOALTER TABLE REQUESTS ADD CONSTRAINT [PK__REQUESTS__07DE5BCC] PRIMARY KEY ( [ID]) ON [PRIMARY] GOALTER TABLE REQUESTS ADD CONSTRAINT [FK__REQUESTS__TYP__15702E88] FOREIGN KEY ([TYPED_BY]) REFERENCES [USERS] ([LOGIN]) ON UPDATE CASCADE ,CONSTRAINT [FK__REQUESTS__APR__12742E08] FOREIGN KEY ([APROVED_BY]) REFERENCES [USERS] ([LOGIN]) ON UPDATE CASCADEAnd SQL returns:Introducing FOREIGN KEY constraint 'FK__REQUESTS__APR__12742E08' on table 'REQUESTS' may cause cycles or multiple cascade paths. Specify ON DELETE NO ACTION or ON UPDATE NO ACTION, or modify other FOREIGN KEY constraints.Could not create constraint. See previous errors.Ok, after that, I tried creating a new table to store aprovals (Table with two fields: "REQUEST_ID" and "APROVED_BY").So, I removed "APROVED_BY" field from "REQUESTS" and its FK constraint. The same error comes up.I don't think this structure goes into "cycles" or "multiple cascades".How can I do this? Thanks in advanceRegardsRoland

May Cause Cycles Or Multiple Cascade Paths Error With Only Two Tables

Apr 11, 2008

Hi,

I have two tables called a and b. a has one row called aId where aId is the PK. b has bId, aId_1 and aId_2 where bId is the PK and aId_1 and aId_2 both allow nulls.

If I have a relationship between aId and aId_1, and another relationship between aId and aId_2, where I set the delete rule for both to SET_NULL, then I get the error -

"may cause cycles or multiple cascade paths"

But its completely reasonable that I might wish to do this.

The funny thing is that under Visual Studio, I can create a Data Set with these tables and using the designer, I can set the both foreign key relationships to Delete Rule Set Null and everything works as expected.

So, I'm unsure now if I just need to set the Delete rules using the Dataset designer and not bother with them in the database itself.

Any comments?

Thanks,

Barry.

Should The Quorum Disk Be A Physical Disk Or Majority Node Set?

Nov 15, 2006

Hello,

I am trying to setup a test cluster and am having an issue. When I try to create the resource of a physical disk it takes both the drive e: and drive q: and doesn't seperate them into two physical disks as resources. This means when I try to associate the quorum disk it links the to physcial disk resource of drive e and q. Then when I try to install SQL2k5 I get the warning about installing SQL on the quorum disk. Am I missing something? Is there a way to seperate e and q onto two physical disk resources so I can specifically associate the quorum to q and the sql to e or should I be setting the quorum disk to a majority node set? Thanks in advance.

SQL Server, Disk Arrays And Disk IO

May 7, 2004

Hi all,

Ok here goes,

I have a three tier system using SQL server 2000, we are currently experiencing IO bottle necks on our SCSI Raid 10 array, which holds the Data and the logs in separate partitions.

So my options as I understand it are:

Get Enterprise edition

or

Get another physical raid 10 array and separate the logs and data i.e. data on one array and logs on the other array.

I would like to try the latter but I am totally unsure how much difference this will make or whether it will make any difference at all.

Does anyone know how much performance increase I will get from using two arrays as opposed to one?

Any other advice on this scenario would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Identifying Index Use

Aug 20, 2001

Hello,

I have recently started working on a OLAP application. The database is around 35 gig, with over half of that space being taken by the indexes. What has happened is previous developers have added indexes to attempt to improve the performance of a select statement (for reporting). Some of the indexes work, but many do not.

I would like to drop the ineffective indices. What I would like is a way to find if indexes are being used, preferably by object name. Is there a third party vendor that can monitor objects and how much they are used? Is there another way to do this using SQL?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

How can get an object's dependencies in SQL Server. For example it I have written a procedure which accesses some tables inside it then the procedure is said to be dependent on that table. Or one procedure might call another procedure and hence dependent.

Can I know an object's dependent objects from any system table. I think Oracle has a table USER_DEPENDENCIES which provides this info (I may be wrong :-().

Identifying Filler

Mar 14, 2006

Some columns in transaction tables are "mandatory fields" on the dataentry screens, and as a result tend to accumulate junk entries, wherethe user puts something, anything, in the window in order to get theGUI to accept the screen. This filler isn't as elaborate as LoremIpsum, but more likely characters from adjacent keys on the second rowof the keyboard, like "lkjkljl". This non-data gets in the way ofapplications that use the data. I wonder if there is a way torecognize and ignore this stuff -- I would assume it's a well-knownproblem, but I haven't found any literature on it. Any pointerswelcome. And sorry if this is off-topic for a DB group. Thanks,Jim Geissman

Identifying Quotes

Mar 23, 2007

Has previous work been done on this? Is their a library one can download? Here's the problem. In an aricle a person or author may make a statement about a subject or a person. I am making a database on this.

For example, here in Israel, PM Olmert may make a statement on the teacher's strike or on Abu Mazen. The article may say, speaking of Mazen, Olmert said such and such. PM Olmert said, "xxxxxxx......." with the previous material making it clear whathe was speaking of.

Right now I have ugly code. Is there a neat way of doing this?

If this is the wrong forum, can somebody direct me to the right forum?

Thanks.
