Hi, i've question about how to import an ascii-file in a sql 2005 table.
I want to import this file also with an unique key. There i first have to get the last key form the table and then raise this key. Next step is to use this key during the import.

SSIS Flat File Import Help

Aug 28, 2007

I am trying to import a flat file into SQL Server 2005 using SSIS. I have never used it before and I am getting confused by the error I am receiving.

I have a link to a flat file, that gets sent through a Derived Column flow where dates in YYYYMMDD are changed to MM/DD/YYYY format. Then the string MM/DD/YYYY is converted to a date in a Data Conversion flow. And finally the data is put into a SQL Server table (currently with no rows).

The problem I am having is with a text field with the email address in it. The error I am getting is:

[Import Allstate Auto Club [1]] Error: Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "email_source" returned status value 4 and status text "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page.".

The problem is I can't see where in the flow the problem is. The field length is 20 wherever I look and the codepage is 1252 wherever I look. Does anyone have an insight? Keep in mind, I have never used SSIS before and I consider myself an amateur with SQL Server. It could easily be a data type conflict or something easy. Any help will be appreciated.

SSIS - Import Flat File

Apr 17, 2006

I have a fixed width flat file I'm trying to insert into an SQL 2005 table using SSIS -- it's a recurring task. One of the columns in the flat file has to go to a column of type Numeric. No matter what I try : a data conversion, defining the field as DT_NUMERIC in the connection,... I always get "The conversion returned status value 2 and status text :The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data". It is driving me bonkers, up to the point that I find myself wishing for the 'good old' DTS days of SQL 2000. And I dread to think what will happen when I try to port some serious, much more complex DTS packages on my SQL 2000 to SQL 2005.

The data in question represents longitudes and latitudes so quite often there is a leading white space in the data : ex. : " 95.15". Surely that cannot be the cause ?

I've spent hours doing the RTFM-thing and searching the newsgroups, fora...you name it. Apart from ending up running in circles in the MS documentation, the only thing I've really learned so far is that I'm aparently not the only one driven to dispair by the new SSIS thing.

I can think of a number of ways to hack my way around this thing, but that's not the kind of 'progress' I had in mind when I started the move to SQL 2005.

Intelligent suggestions would be most welcome.

SSIS Import/Export Flat File

Oct 11, 2006

Firstly, I hope this question isn't asked too frequently but I found no existing reference to this situation....

I had a bunch of stored procedures in SQL 2k which imported and exported data to and from flat files using TEXTPTR, READTEXT, UPDATETEXT etc... The flat files were continuously changing so the filepath was a parameter for the sp.

The reason I used the pointer to flat files is because I didn't want to
load the files in memory before commiting them ie. with TEXTPTR and
UPDATETEXT I can import a 1Gb binary file 80000 bytes at a time and
keep (precious) memory usage down.

I was accessing this procs from a C# application.

Since these methods are going to be phased out by the guys at MS what is the best way of importing/exporting very large binary files in SQL 2005?

As far as I can tell SSIS requires a Flat File Source Manager object which needs a static filepath - not good.

Hope you can help,
Paul

Update Flat File Before Import SSIS?

Nov 29, 2006

Hi,

We have a csv file which contains a date field. The data in the field contains "0" as well as "dd/mm/yyyy". Is it possible to update all "0" to "01/01/1900" on import using SSIS.

Basically when we import the flat file now it falls over due to the destination table data type being datetime.

If this is not clear please let me know and i'll try and explain more?

Thanks for any help.

EBCDIC To ASCII Conversion In SSIS

Sep 6, 2007

I tried to setup a flat file data source that has code page 37 (EBCDIC)

Then I have a flat file destionation that is ASCII.

And inbetween I have tried several different data flow conversion tasks liked Data Conversion, and Derived Column. But I keep getting errors about different code pages.

I also tried to load the EBCDIC data into a SQL Server DB, and it complains about different code page.

Has anyone been able to do this with SSIS out of the box, without any extra components ?

SSIS Import Text File To SQL Server With Nulls?

Jan 23, 2007

I have a text file I am trying to import into SQL Server using OLEDB connection.

It's a fixed field text file, ragged right format. One of my columns maps to a numeric column in the DB. In some spots in the file, it is blank, in others there is actual numeric data.

I can't get it to import. If I set the text file column to numeric, I get an error "That value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data." If I set the text file column to string, I get a similar error from the OLE DB provider, "Invalid character value for cast specification"

I have tried telling it to retain nulls in the data flow and the other way as well. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Excel File Stays In Use After I Import It Using A SSIS Package

Dec 28, 2006

Hello everybody...
I have a very simple SSIS package that loop throught the worksheets of an Excel file and insert the data into a SQL server 2005 table.

The SSIS is very simple and works fine the problem is that after the Package executes if I double click on the Excel file imported I have the message that the file is in use.

I think that the Excel connection manager of the package doesn't release the Excel resourse but this is only a guess..

Do am I right? If yes how can I release the resource?

Thank you very much

Double Quotes In ASCII File

Feb 1, 2006

I've an issue with double-quotes in CSV file. One of the columns may contain this kind of value: "STATUS ""H"" "

I've got quote set to "

The file source fails on such records.

I found this thread and Scott tells us there that the file can't contain " in data.

Is this 100% correct?

I've got mutliple text columns and the pain is that I don't know which column might have these cases in future. To create a script means to write my own file parser for all files I use.

Any ideas?

Dima.

How To Import In Special Character Delimited Text File By Using SSIS ?

Sep 26, 2007

Hi,

I would like to know how to import in the custom delimited text file by using SSIS.
For example, instead by using tab or comma delimited, I use this character : '¶'
The reason is the delimited format that SSIS provided is too common such as colon, semi colon, tab, comma and pipeline.
I have the data that the user also key in the pipeline there. So I am thinking to separate the field by using this special character, but cannot see if there is anyway to import in by using SSIS.

Please help to share the solution on this :

A¶B¶C
1¶2¶3

How Do I Import A Varying Column Width Flat File Into A Table Using SSIS?

Apr 24, 2008

How do i import a Varying Column Width Flat file into a Table using SSIS?

I have a flat file that has 4 columns with varying width
Like I should read the file as
Col 1 - (1 to 10 Characters)
Col 2 - (12 to 21 Characters)
Col 3 - (22 to 35 Characters)
Col 4 - (36 to 38 Characters)
At the end of the record is a "LF"

I think "Fixed Width" Columns allow me to define a standard column length for all the columns.. Right?

Any thoughts on how to?

Integration Services :: Import Flat File Which Has Changing Column Order Using SSIS?

Jul 2, 2015

I have a flat with few columns

FirstName, lastName, Address
f1,l1,a1
f2,l2,a2

I build my SSIS package based on the above file. But now i receive files with different columns orderĀ let say

lastName,FirstNamr,Address
l1,f1,a1
L2,f2,a2
or
Address,FirstName,LastName
a1,f1,l1
a2,f2,l2

every time i receive multiple files in different order and i have to remap all my mappings. These are just a few columns and i have like 20 columns and the order can potentially change any time. so every time i have build new packages remap them etc.

through normal c# code it pretty easy. I tried to add script here but the script also needs a source and mapping so there is also a mapping issue. Is there a better way to do this.

Problem With BULK INSERT ASCII File Into Nvarchar Column

Aug 21, 2007

Hi,
I have a problem with BULK INSERT. I created the following table:

Code Snippetcreate table Test
(id char(4), name nvarchar(16), last char(1))

I am trying to bulk insert data from ASCII (not unicode) file with only two rows:
0011First name
0018Second name

Since it is a fixed length file, I am using the following format file:

Code Snippet
8.0
3
1 SQLCHAR 0 4 "" 1 ID HEBREW_CI_AS
2 SQLCHAR 0 16 "" 2 NAME HEBREW_CI_AS
3 SQLCHAR 0 0 "
" 3 Last HEBREW_CI_AS

With bcp utility everything works just fine!

Code Snippet
bcp Demo.dbo.test in c: est -T -f c: est.fmt

But when I use BULK INSERT in the following form:

Code Snippet
BULK INSERT Test FROM 'c:Test'
WITH
(
FORMATFILE='c:Test.fmt',
CODEPAGE='OEM'
);

I am getting error
Server: Msg 4863, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Bulk insert data conversion error (truncation) for row 1, column 2 (name).

Now, one interesting thing: if I change the name field from nvarchar to varchar, it is working with BULK INSERT as well.
Can anybody explain what is going on here?

I am using MS SQL 2000 and MSDE

Thanks in advance,
Eugene.
