Error Trying To Import MS Access 2003 Database Via SQL Server Import And Export Wizard - Too Many Sessions Already Active

Nov 29, 2006

I am trying to simplify a query given to me by one of my collegues written using the query designer of Access. Looking at the query there seem to be some syntax differences, so to see if this was the case I thought I would import the database to my SQL Server Developer edition.

I tried to start the wizard from within SQL Server Management Studio Express as shown in one of the articles on MSDN which did not work, but the manual method also suggested did work.

Trouble is that it gets most of the way through the import until it spews forth the following error messages:

- Prepare for Execute (Error)

There does not seem to be any method of specifying a number of sessions, so I don't see how to get round the problem.

Does anyone know how I can get the import to work?

Import/Export Records Between Two Identical Databases In SQL Server 2005

Hi,Currently, I am developing an application for my client. The issue is that the client has the office and warehouse which are in different locations. Every month, all records in warehouse database will be synchronized to another database which is identical with the warehouse database but it is run in his laptop at the office. Since networking is not an option, I have to create two identical database like this. Does any one know what is the good solution to this? Is there any synchronize feature in SQL Server 2005?Many thanks,

Data Migration Using Import/export Wizard SQL 2000 To SQL 2005

Mar 16, 2007

I am trying to import data from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005

The Data schemas are the same in both (tables, relationships, key and triggers).

Using the wizard I am trying to import data from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. The issue I face is to manage the Idenity columns. I do not want the identity values from the SQL 2000 DB which may be at say 5000, instead I want to use the identity values from the SQL 2005 database which will problably start at 1

Is there a way to do this, should I use a custom query instead of a direct table dump. If using a custom query do I need to just specify a Select query or does it have to be a specific "INSERT INTO Table ..." type query

If I do import the data directly with Identity "ON" how can I advance the identity column value to current +1 on the SQL 2005 table.

Thanks

Periodical Import Of Access Db Into SQL Server 2000

Jul 20, 2005

Hi,One of my clients has the following situation. They use Access DB fordata update etc. some business functions while they also want to viewthe Access data quickly and more efficiently in SQL Server 2000. HugeAccess db with over 100 user tables, over 60 MB data. The DTS package that comes with SQL Server 2000 seems pretty "messy"in the sense that it assumes that one needs to do one time import onlyor accurately it does not seem to address periodical import well, likein this case, we need to fresh the Access data in the SQL Serverimport daily. And I don't see DTS package (saved or new) has anoption, that would allow one to delete existing destination datafirst, that is what we want for all freshes. For the saved package, the design screen is too busy, maybe, here one of the icon(function)provides what we need, however, I don't it's globaly applicable, Imean, the whole database vs. a particular table. So, what do you think of the following strategy?1) Create/save the Access import DTS process;2) Create a sql script that would check and drop the destinationdatabase, andrecreate the same new destionation database; The schedule the sql script a minute or two before the scheduledruntime ofthe saved DTS package.Does this approach make some sense or do you have a better idea? Now,a newquestion arises here, would this task of frequent drop and creation ofa reasonably large database contribute to disk fragmentation, whichwould slow down data retrieval among others.Thanks.

Import And Export Wizard: Transferring Multiple Tables From SQL Server 2005 To SQL Server 2000

Jun 15, 2007

Hi!

I just used the SSIS Import and Export Wizard to copy 50+ tables from SS05 to SS2K.

I found that the wizard created a package that I could not figure out how to edit, e.g., to change whether or not it had to CREATE a table, or just use an existing one. (I created some problems by manually editing the receiving table names to be ones that already existed -- but the original names it had did not exist, so it knew it had to create them. What I should have done, and eventually ended up doing, was scroll through my list of tables in the "receiving" box; I just figured editing the name would be faster, not realizing what problems I would create for myself.)

Anyhow, now that I see the complex package that the wizard creates, with a LOOP over the 50+ tables, I would like to know how/where in the package it is storing the information about the tables to copy.

Basically the wizard creates the following Control Flow tab entries (in processing sequence order):

an Execute SQL Task: NonTransactableSql
an Execute SQL Task: START TRANSACTION
a Sequence Container: Transaction Scoping Sequence, which contains
an Execute SQL Task: AllowedToFailPrologueSql
an Execute SQL Task: PrologueSql
a Foreach Loop Container, which contains
a Transfer Task with an icon I did not notice in the Toolbox
an Execute Package Task: Execute Inner Package
an Execute SQL Task: EpilogueSql
an "on success" arrow to
an Execute SQL Task: COMMIT TRANSACTION
an Execute SQL Task: PostTransaction Sql
an "on failure" arrow to
an Execute SQL Task: ROLLBACK TRANSACTION
an Execute SQL Task: CompensatingSql

Where, and how, can I look within this package to see the details about the tables I am transferring? I see that one of the Connection Managers is "TableSchema.XML" -- but it points to a temporary file on my hard drive, that I presume is populated by the package. Where does it get its information?

This is certainly much more complex than the package I would have written, based on my limited knowledge of SSIS. I would have been inclined to create 50+ Data Flow tasks, one for each table.

So now I'm trying to understand why the Wizard created this more-complex package.

Any help will be appreciated, including references to non-Microsoft books/websites/etc.

Thanks in advance.

Dan

SQL Server Express 2005 / ESRI ArcSDE Personal- How Do I Import/Export Data?

Nov 21, 2007

Greetings.

Our company is planning to upgrade to ESRI's brand new ArcSDE Personal edition and SQL Server Express 2005 platform to do GIS work for our clients. We are not in a position at this time to migrate to the full ArcGIS Server and SQL Server 2005 platform. We currently use a Microsoft Access 2003 relational database, and have no intention to move to Access 2007.

ArcSDE Personal cannot connect to SQL Server 2005, but it is able to connect and work with SQL Server Express 2005.

In SQL Management Studio Express, we were unable to find any feature that would allow us to import and export data to/from SQL Server Express. This is rather unusual, as we need to test how SQL Server Express will handle import and export data. In Microsoft Access we simply right click and choose import or export in the database window. Easy as pie. We ran the upsize wizard in Microsoft Access to migrate our data. But after that, our GIS team was pretty much stuck.

My question is, how does one import/export data to/from SQL Server Express? Do we need to install a missing component? Is scripting required? Or should we wait until we are able to acquire the SQL Server 2005?

Import And Export Data Wizard Missing In SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

Feb 9, 2007

After some weeks evaluating tools and platforms for developing an application, I decided to move to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. Everything was fine till last night, when after creating my tables, I needed to populate them. I tried to find the Import and Export Data Wizard that SQL Server 7.0 and 2000 used to have, but great was my surprise when I found -  in this forum - a post that said that it's not available in the Express Edition.

I'll have to move back in time (what I hate) to remember the way BCP worked. Can somebody post some examples to not start from zero ?  Does anybody know a third party visual tool that can import/export data from text files to a SQL Server DB via ODBC ?

What's the reason it was not included in the EE ?

THanks !

Import Some Data From Access To SQL Server

Aug 17, 2004

I have created some DB tables on SQL Server. Now I want to import some data from Access using Data Transformation Services.

The APPLICATION table I have created has the following columns:

AppID, AppName, AppMnem, GripsID, Decommissioned, Last Modified, Modified By

AppID is the primary key and is an identity column with an autoincrement on insert.

The query I used to import the data from Access is:

select `T>Application>General`.`Application Name`, `T>Application>General`.`Application Mnem`, `T>Application>General`.`GripsID`, `T>Application>General`.`Decommissioned`, `T>Application>General`.`Last Modified`, `T>Application>General`.`Modified By`
from `T>Application>General`
where `T>Application>General`.`Application Mnem`='TMS'
order by `T>Application>General`.`Application Mnem`

The transformation I used is:

'************************************************* *********************
' Visual Basic Transformation Script
' Copy each source column to the
' destination column
'************************************************* ***********************

Function Main()
DTSDestination("AppName") = DTSSource("Application Name")
DTSDestination("AppMnem") = DTSSource("Application Mnem")
DTSDestination("GripsID") = DTSSource("GripsID")
DTSDestination("Decommissioned") = DTSSource("Decommissioned")
DTSDestination("Last Modified") = DTSSource("Last Modified")
DTSDestination("Modified By") = DTSSource("Modified By")
Main = DTSTransformStat_OK
End Function

However, I keep gettting the following error:

Error at destination for row number 1. Errors encountered so far in this task: 1.
Instert error, column 1 ('AppID', DBTYPE_I4), status 10: Integrity violation; attempt to insert null data or data which violates constraints.
Unspecified Error

Any ideas as to what the problem is?

Thank in advance

Import Data From Sql Server Or Access

May 8, 2008

Hello,

I have been looking for a way to import data from sql server 2005 or access into sql compact edition.

The short end of the story is that our product supports 3 databases, sql server, mysql, and access(for standalone deployments)

if we can use sql compact instead of access i believe it woudl simplify our support and maintenance, however i am struggling to find a way to get our existing data into compact.

This product is not a mobile application, and the .sdf files will be deployed to desktops, the only way ive seen to convert data so far is to use activesync over a mobile device.

is there any other way to get our existing sql server or access databases into compact?

Thanks

SQL Server Compact Edition Sdf As Data Source In SSIS Import And Export Wizard - Error

Jul 31, 2007

Should I be able to use a SQL Server Compact Edition sdf file as the data source for the SSIS Import and Export Wizard?

When I select the .net Framework Provider for compact Edition from the data source drop down, I get a message box with "An error occured which the SSIS Wizard was not prepared to handle. Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. (mscorlib) Specified method is not supported. (System.Data.SqlServerCe)"

We have a user with a sdf file that will no longer sync, so we wanted to get her data from sdf file tables into SQL Server tables quickly and easily. Since the SSIS wizard wouldn't work with the sdf data source, we copied SQL Server Mgmt Studio query results into an Excel spreadsheet via the Clipboard, them imported those records with SSIS. But we need a repeatable process in case this happens in the future.

We tried to reinitialize her merge replication subscription with SQL Server Mgmt studio, and with C# code, but none of that would work.

How many MS data provider options are available for SQL Server compact edition? I see ".Net Framework Data Provider for Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition" in the SSIS data source drop down, but shouldn't I also see an OLE-DB Provider for SQL Server Compact Edition?

This is all on my XP workstation where I can successfully write C# code for SQL Server Compact data access with Assembly = System.Data.SqlServerCe = C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEPublicAssembliesSystem.Data.SqlServerCe.dll. So I think I have the proper tools installed.

Thanks.

Import Data From Access 2003 To SQL Server 2005 Via T SQL ?

Oct 5, 2007

I have a customer using a web app where the data is drawn from a database in SQL Server 2005.

In addition to its normal tables, the database has two lookup tables which are deleted, recreated, and repopulated once a week. The data for these two tables comes from two queries in an Access database which essentially turn many related tables into two flat tables.

I know this can be done with SSIS, I've done it, I suppose it could be done witth SSMA for Access, but could this operation be done with a stored prodecure ? Most steps would not be a problems. They would be:

- Drop the two tables in SQL Server (no problem)
- Recreate them (no problem, maybe better to just delete all existing records, either way)

- Connect to the query in the Access database (here is where I have questions)
- Simply do an INSERT from the Access query to the SQL table.

So my question is whether we can connect to an Acess query from a stored proc, I suppose using ODBC.

Can this be done? If so how? Are there any papers on this topic?

Msny thanks,
Mike Thomas

Data Import From CSV File With DTS (SQL Server 2000)

Oct 3, 2007

Hi All,
I am trying to import data via DTS from a CSV file. I have the "empty" tables already created with proper column names. Now, I have a subset data of each of these tables, which I am trying to import. I am facing problem in that, there is a datatype conflict between the source (CSV file) and destination (table already in the DB). All the data in the CSV file appears to be of DBTYPE_WSTR, where as in the table it is different (some are DBTYPE_WSTR, some are DBTYPE_DATE, and so on). Is there a way that I can import data successfully? This has become a work stoppage issue now. I had to actually go for this approach of creating the empty tables first and then importing data because, the backup file was very very large and could not be copied to our domain. Please help me out in this.

Thanks a lot.
Mannu.

SQL And CSV Data Import Export

May 29, 2007

Hi
I am using CSV (comma delimeted file) for exporting data from sql server table to CSV and then import to sql server from the CSV.
Now I have a problem, I could sucessfully export the data to CSV, but one of the field which has whole html for each product is giving me problem, It wouldnt save in one cell as for other data items in a record are. If I remove that field, the rest of records are exported okay, but with this one, it do export, but the data wouldnt go to one cell of the excel file and hence wouldnt work in importing to sql. I guess some tags in the string is creating problem plus also what should I do if the string already have comma as data, and we use comma as delimiting character.
Any kind of help greatly appreciated

EDIT:
Below is a sample of html thats already saved in one field but wouldnt come to one excel cell when exported to CSV...

DTS Import Data Problem (exel Into SQL Server 2000)

Jul 3, 2006

Hi all,

I face a small problem in DTS, hope you can help me to solve this issue.

I designed a DTS package to import excel data ( with 4 column ) into SQL server database,The database design for the database table was

column name type length

ID bigint 8

CountedQty decimal 9

Location nvarchar 8

Other nvarchar 50

The DTS package is work and does not appear any error message. But the data in column 'Location' appeared <Null> after import into the database, this issue happen when the excel data was <numeric> value (string value in this data column can be accepted and appear nicely).

Izzit because nvarchar cannot accept numeric value, how can i solve this problem ?

Thank you very much.
