T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Import To Table From Varying Tab Delimited Text Files

Feb 10, 2014

I need to import data to a MSSql table from massive (read: a million and a half rows, every single day) logs that come in .txt format separated in tabs with a ";" symbol and then have some stored procedures analyze that data to generate some reports in an excel file with that info. The text files include the column headers in the first row and the data starts on the second one.

The challenge is that the text files differ in column order and count every single day.

The analysis that I need to do only needs about 15 columns from the nearly 90-120 that those files include, and those columns sadly happen to be in a different order in those files.

DTS: Copying Data From Text Files To A SQL Server Table

Sep 10, 2001

Hi all,

I got a situation here.....

From a source table (in SERVER1) I get ids of candidates and from another source (in SERVER2) I get their CVs (text files stored in various Folders). My destination table (in SERVER3) has two fields, CandidateId & CandidateCV.

I have to transfer the data in above fashion for nearly 1 million records.
How can I write a DTS package which picks up the text file from SERVER2 based on the CandidateId which comes from SERVER1? Probably I need some kind of looping mechanism which changes the candidate id & his CV file.

Can anyone help???

Thanks...

Import Excel Spreadsheet Data Into SQL Server Database Table Using SqlBulkCopy

Dec 13, 2007

Hi, I'm a Student, and since a few months ago I'm learning JAVA. I'm creating an application to call and compare times. For this I create in Excel a time table which is quite big and it would be a lot of typing work to input one by one the data in each cell in SQL Server, considering that I have to create 8 more tables. I was able to retreive the data from excel usin the JXL API of JAVA but it doesn't give all the funtions to perform math operations as JDBC. That's why I need to move the tables from Excel to SQL.
I found this site http://davidhayden.com/blog/dave/archive/2006/05/31/2976.aspx which gives a code to do so, but I guess that some heathers are missing or maybe I don't know which compiler to use to run that code, I would like you help to identify which compiler use to run that code or if there is some vital piece of code missing.// Connection String to Excel Workbook
string excelConnectionString = @"Provider=Microsoft .Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=Book1.xls;Extended Properties=""Excel 8.0;HDR=YES;""";

// Create Connection to Excel Workbook
using (OleDbConnection connection = new OleDbConnection(excelConnectionString))
{
OleDbCommand command = new OleDbCommand ("Select ID,Data FROM [Data$]", connection);

connection.Open();

// Create DbDataReader to Data Worksheet
using (DbDataReader dr = command.ExecuteReader())
{
// SQL Server Connection String
string sqlConnectionString = "Data Source=.; Initial Catalog=Test;Integrated Security=True";

// Bulk Copy to SQL Server
using (SqlBulkCopy bulkCopy = new SqlBulkCopy(sqlConnectionString))
{
bulkCopy.DestinationTableName = "ExcelData";
bulkCopy.WriteToServer(dr);
}
}
}
On the other hand in this forum I that someelse use that link but implements a totally different code which I'm not able to compile also http://forums.asp.net/p/1110412/2057095.aspx#2057095. It seems this code works as I was able to read, but I do not know which language is used.
Dim excelConnectionString As String = "Provider=Microsoft .Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=Book1.xls;Extended Properties=""Excel 8.0;HDR=YES;"""

' Using

Dim connection As OleDbConnection = New OleDbConnection(excelConnectionString)

Try

Dim command As OleDbCommand = New OleDbCommand("Select ID,Data FROM [Data$]", connection)
connection.Open()

' Using

Dim dr As DbDataReader = command.ExecuteReader

Try

Dim sqlConnectionString As String = WebConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("CampaignEnterpriseConnectionString").ConnectionString

' Using

Dim bulkCopy As SqlBulkCopy = New SqlBulkCopy(sqlConnectionString)

Try
bulkCopy.DestinationTableName =
"ExcelData"
bulkCopy.WriteToServer(dr)

Finally

CType(bulkCopy, IDisposable).Dispose()

End Try

Finally

CType(dr, IDisposable).Dispose()

End Try

Finally

CType(connection, IDisposable).Dispose()

End Try

Catch ex As Exception

End Try
The Compilers I have are: Eclipse, Netbeans, MS Visual C++ Express Edition and MS Visual C# Express Edition. In MS Visual C++

USE TESTDB

--Table Creation Starts here

Create table Account([ID] int IDENTITY PRIMARY KEY, Name Varchar(100),

Create table logtable (id int identity(1,1),
Query varchar(1000),
Importeddate datetime default getdate())

as
set quoted_identifier off
declare @query varchar(1000)
declare @max1 int
declare @count1 int
Declare @filename varchar(100)
set @count1 =0
create table #x (name varchar(200))
set @query ='master.dbo.xp_cmdshell "dir '+@filepath+@pattern +' /b"'
insert #x exec (@query)
delete from #x where name is NULL
select identity(int,1,1) as ID, name into #y from #x

--print @query
exec (@query)
insert into logtable (query) select @query

drop table #y

Exec usp_ImportMultipleFiles 'c:myimport', '*.csv', 'Account'

If i use the above Exec like

How To Create Table On Text File Import?

Sep 27, 2007

Hey guys,
I have a dilemma and hope someone can help.

I don't know of any utilities or commands in SQL that do this but I hope someone does.

What I need to do is something like a bcp import a text file in. I can do that with DTS as well. But what I wanted to do is create a table on the import. So lets say, I am importing a tab-delimited file with column names as the first row that is called ax.txt. On import, it would create the table ax with the column names in the file and then import the data into that table.

I hope I explained it clearly. Please let me know if there is anything I can use to do this without writing lots of code.

I have an idea how to do it the long way but hope there is a utility that already does it.

Thanks in advance.

Import A Text File To A SQL Table Question

Feb 6, 2008

Greetings all!

I am a relative newbie to SQL but I've written many queries for vb.net/.net code...I'm not an absolute beginner.

I'd like to import a text file into a sql database so that I can use SQL Reporting Services to report on the data. Here is a sample of the first 8 textfile records. All of the 6 potential database fields are separated by a comma and no spaces:

1,12/4/06 4:12:11 PM,67.13,70.50,71.56,8.23
2,12/4/06 4:17:11 PM,67.13,70.50,71.56,8.33
3,12/4/06 4:22:11 PM,67.19,70.69,71.69,8.19
4,12/4/06 4:27:11 PM,67.19,70.63,71.69,8.18
5,12/4/06 4:32:11 PM,67.19,70.69,71.75,8.05
6,12/4/06 4:37:11 PM,67.19,70.69,71.69,8.03
7,12/4/06 4:42:11 PM,67.19,70.63,71.69,8.05
8,12/4/06 4:47:11 PM,67.19,70.63,71.63,8.02

The description for field datatypes of the first record above is:

1 (this is an autonumber, should be a number for ordering)
12/4/06 4:12:11 PM (date and time, can be converted to text if necessay)
67.13 (number, 2 decimal spaces)
70.50 (number, 2 decimal spaces)
71.56 (number, 2 decimal spaces)
8.23 (number, 2 decimal spaces)

The textfile is big, 97K records. I have SQL 2005 installed on my PC.

Can anyone out there please help me with the import or SQL statement to create a SQL table from this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks and have a great day - gad1
