I have a insert into statement in sp1 which executes sp2.sp2 retuns around 2000 rows after lot of processing.When I execute sp2 directly from query analyser it takes about 2-3 mins but if I do the
insert into tab1
exec sp2
It takes 20 mins.
what are my other options, how can i improve the performance?

Hi All
I decided to change over from Microsoft Access Database file to the New SQLServerCe Compact edition. Although the reading of data from the database is greatly improved, the inserting of the new rows is extremely slow.
I was getting between 60 to 70 rows per sec using OLEDB and an Access Database but now only getting 14 to 27 rows per sec using SQLServerCe.
I have tried the below code changes and nothing seams to increase the speed, any help as I would prefer to use SQLServerCe as the database is much smaller and I€™m use to SQL Commands.

I'm writing an application where I have to perform a lot of inserts/updates on a SQL Server Compact Edt. 3.1 database (up to 50.000 or even 100.000 consecutive inserts).
I'm using native C++ and OleDB. I set the command text only once for each table and I increased maximum buffer size (DBPROP_SSCE_MAXBUFFERSIZE). There are also no table indices or foreign keys.
The performance is quite well, but not good enough. I took a closer look at the MS Merge Replication and I observed a really good insert performance.
Maybe somebody can tell me some ''secrets'' how I can speed up my query performance!?

I have a database that holds an information about customers, each customer's data is holded in many referenced tables. In one stored procedure i should insert/update many customers. I have 2 options: bulk insert of all customers data in one transaction or insert each customer in separate transaction. My question is: what approach is considered to be correct, and gives better performance assuming that the number of inserted/updated customers is very large? Thank you
Hi,Any suggestions on the following as I've kind of run out of ideas.I have 2 servers which are the same spec ie box, processor etc. Theonly difference I can tell is that the production box has raid setupbut the test box hasn't (I think).I have created a stored procedure to insert 10k rows into a dummy tablewith two columns.I have logged onto the boxes directly so there are no networks issueshere. Also the boxes only have light traffic on them really, thereisn't much going on at the point of running.The production box inserts the rows two times faster than the test boxi.e 30 secs rather than 1 min. Does anyone have any idea why this couldbe, do you think it could be raid?The prod box has 8 disks I think in hardware Raid 5 but as the test boxhas 4 disks and it looks as if all the space is available i doubt raidis being employed.ThanksIan.ps. does anyone know if there is a way to check the raid configurationof a box from within windows? or do you have to re-boot and go throughthe setup?

Right now I am just doing many inserts, but the performance is lacking. I tried to wrap all the inserts into 1 sql command and process it like that, but it does not seem to want to execute. My first tests indicates that an insert statement with '?' ist 20 % faster than with '@p1' parameters:

So I'm a little bit afraid to use this version.

I have a table lets call it TABLE_A that has +- 100 million rows , obviously inserts into this table take some time as it has 1 clustered and 3 non clustered indexes.
I have another table lets call it TABLE_B, it is identical to TABLE_A and it holds 100,000 rows that must be inserted into TABLE_A.
As you can imagine a : INSERT INTO TABLE_A select * from TABLE_B takes alot of time.
What is the best way to speed this up? (Dopping indexes in not an option).
I know bulk insert gives the best performance, but can you bulk insert between tables ? Bulk insert in from a flat file source.
It seems redundant to write an ssis package to extract the data out of TABLE_B to file simply to bulk insert in back into the database?
So in a nutshell what is the fastest way to get the rows from TABLE_B in TABLE_A?

Currently we import some pretty large files (sometimes >1gb) using DTS into a staging table then into the active table after some processing every night. The DTS stuff (before my time) looks pretty messy when all is said and done compared to a BULK INSERT TSQL statement.
My thought is to switch to a stored procedure using BULK INSERT because it will be easier for others to maintain after me. My question is with performance. As I mentioned, our imported files can be extremely large at times and I don't want to sacrifice too much performance for readability sake. What can I do to optimize a BULK INSERT TSQL statement and how does it stand up to similar actions using DTS?
Does anyone know how to improve performance on insert statements. I have to run a query of several thousand insert statements, but it just takes too long. Does anyone know of any good tips to improve performance?

I'm testing Mirroing.
1) I have dedicated NIC for Mirroring - 100Mb
There is no issue with the network (file of 25MB goes in 2.5 seconds)
2) I'm issuing the next simple command
Select * into dbo.Table2 from dbo.Table1
3) the size of the table is 25MB
in async mode it takes 3-4 sec (as if it runs only local)
in sync mode it takes 25-29 sec !!!!
WHY ? IS THIS NORMAL ?
is there any configuration i can change ?

I have a series of queries which have doubled in the amount of time they take to execute since moving to SQL Server 2005. The queries being performance tested are utilising hardware that is very similar to that of the comparison SQL Server 2000 server. They have 6 CPUs exactly the same and we have swapped RAM around to eliminate that difference.
There are 4 parts to the query suffering performance degredation.
1. Create temporary results table
2. Create (using SELECT INTO) and populate temporary working table 1 - 212,263 rows
3. Create (using SELECT INTO) and populate temporary working table 2 - 5,102 rows
4. Insert into temp results table matches found in temp work table 1 and temp work table 2 - 382 rows
On 2000, the queries take a total of 15 secs. On 2005, they take 30 seconds. Part four of the query takes approx 17 secs on its initial run. However, if i truncate the temp results table and re-run just the last query it only takes 1 sec. Query Plan caching?
I have reviewed the forum for a solution to the problem but with no luck. Many of the solutions presented appear to relate to permanant user tables. Solutions such as UPDATE STATISTICS and recompiling stored procedures have no positive effect. When reviewing the query plans, there are very little differences. Some expected between versions right?

I am using SQL 2005 SSIS. I am joining several large tables and then the move result into another table in the same database.
I would like know which method is faster:
Use Execute SQL Task to insert the result set to the target table
Use the Data Flow Task to insert the result set to the target table. (Use OLE DB source to execute SQL command and then use the SQL destination)
Could you tell me why then other is slower?

Both are running SQL Server 2000.I encounted various performance issues with the production server with aparticular query. It would take approximately 22 seconds to return 100rows, thats about 0.22 seconds per row. Note: I ran the query in singleuser mode. So I tested the query on the Development server by taking abackup (.dmp) of the database and moving it onto the dev server. I ranthe same query and found that it ran in less than a second.I took a look at the query execution plan and I found that they we'rethe exact same in both cases.Then I took a look at the various index's, and again I found nodifferences in the table indices.If both databases are identical, I'm assumeing that the issue is relatedto some external hardware issue like: disk space, memory etc. Or couldit be OS software related issues, like service packs, SQL Serverconfiguations etc.Here's what I've done to rule out some obvious hardware issues on theprod server:1. Moved all extraneous files to a secondary harddrive to free up spaceon the primary harddrive. There is 55gb's of free space on the disk.2. Applied SQL Server SP4 service packs3. I have a web form with a text field that needs to take in as much as the user decides to type and insert it into an nvarchar(max) field in the database behind. I've tried using the new .write() method in my update statement, but it cuts off the text after a while. Is there a way to insert/update in SQL 2005 this without resorting to Bulk Insert? It bloats the transaction log and turning the logging off requires a call to sp_dboptions (or a straight-up ALTER DATABASE), which I'd like to avoid if I can.
View 6 Replies View RelatedAn insert statement was not inserting all the data into a table. Found it very strange as the other fields in the row were inserted. I ran SQL profiler and found that sql statement had all the fields in the insert statement but some of the fields were not inserted. Below is the sql statement which is created dyanmically by a asp.net C# class. The columns which are not inserted are 'totaltax' and 'totalamount' ...while the 'shipto_name' etc...were inserted.there were not errors thrown. The sql from the code cannot be shown here as it is dynamically built referencing C# class files.It works fine on another test database which uses the same dlls. Is there a way to avoid entering column names in the excel template for me to create an excel file froma dynamic excel using openrowset.
I have teh following code but it works fien when column names are given ahead of time.
If I remove the column names from the template and just to Select * from the table and Select * from sheet1 then it tells me that column names donot match.

Hello, I'm new to the forum and new to SQL, ASP.NET, etc. I am creating an intranet site for my company in VS 2005 and have run into a very annoying problem that I can't seem to solve. I have tried Googling it and came up empty. I have a database in SQL Express 2005 and my website will be accessing several tables within the database. I can retrieve info just fine and I can update, delete, etc just fine using gridview or other prebuilt tools, but when I add a few text boxes and wire a button to the SqlDataSource.Insert() command, I get a new record that is full of null values except for the identity key I have set. The kicker is that I am also using a master page and when I duplicate the web page without the master page link, everything works just fine. but i want to insert the data into table having two columns. if iam trying to insert the data into table having two columns its not inserting.
can anyone help me how to do this?

I am currently successfully using the output clause of an insert statement to return the identity values for inserted rows into a table variable
I now need to add an "instead of insert" trigger to the table that is the subject of the insert.
As soon as I add the "instead of insert" trigger, the output clause on the insert statement does not return any data - although the insert completes successfully. As a result I am not able to obtain the identities of the inserted rows
Note that @@identity would return the correct value in the test repro below - but this is not a viable option as the table in question will be merge replicated and @@identity will return the identity value of a replication metadata table rather than the identity of the row inserted into my_table
Note also that in the test repro, the "instead of insert" trigger actually does nothing apart from the default insert, but the real world trigger has additional code.
To run the repro below - select each of the sections below in turn and execute them
1) Create the table
2) Create the trigger
3) Do the insert - note that table variable contains a row with column value zero - it should contain the @@identity value
4) Drop the trigger
5) Re-run the insert from 3) - note that table variable is now correctly populated with the @@identity value in the row
I need the behaviour to be correct when the trigger is present
Any thoughts would be much appreciated

Ti has trigger for insert to add or update multiple rows in Table T2.
When I provide multiple insert SQL then only first insert works while rest insert statements does not work

I'm working on inserting data into a table in a database. The table has two separate triggers, one for insert and one for update (I don't like it this way, but that's how it's been for years). When there is a normal insert, done via a program, it looks like the triggers work fine. When I run an insert manually via a script, the first insert trigger will run, but the update trigger will fail. I narrowed down the issue to a root cause.
This root issue is due to both triggers using the same temporary table name. When the second trigger runs, there's an error stating that a few columns don't exist. I went to my test server and test db and changed the update trigger so that the temporary table is different than the insert trigger temporary table, the triggers work fine. The weird thing is that if the temporary table already exists, when the second trigger tries to create the temporary table, I would expect it to fail and say that it already exists.I'm probably just going to update the trigger tonight and change the temporary table name.
I am currently using openquery to insert data into a SQL 2000 database from a Lotus Notes database. The Lotus database is a linked server with a datasource named CLE_CARS_SF. My SQL table is called Webcases.
The query below works well because the table's columns are even in both databases:

I am moving this over to SQL 2005. The query works well, but I want to add a column to the Webcases SQL database and manually insert a value along with the openquery values.
My insert statement above no longer works because the column numbers don't match.
In a nutshell I would like a way to combine the following queries:

I have an asp page with some simple vbscript to add a record to a table, the record has a datefield (dob).
the insert results in a US formated date if I add a record to a dynamic recordset but a UK formated date if I insert direct to the table ?????
