hi
how can we insert null into a small datetime field (from client application VB)
Hi,
I am having a column subdate as smalldatetime.
The field can have null values. But I am not able to insert null values into the database.
i tried using subdate="". But it inserts some min value of my calendar popup.
Is there a way that i could insert null values into smalldatetime field of the SQl database.
Thanks,

Hi,
I am trying to insert null values into sql server from my access from. I am using sql statement. But it says 'Syntex error in Insert statement'. When i remove null values it works fine? How can I insert null values into a table?
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Hi,
We are using an SQL Server database and seem to be having some problems with inserting null values into numeric fields. The field is set to accept nulls, but when we try and write a record into the database and that field is null, the application craps out on us. Are there any issues that we should be aware of when inserting null values into numeric fields? What might the problem be? Thanks.
i have attached XML and XSD file
i bulkload xml file into 2 tables .ManifestID is the Relationship between 2 tables
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[BIOS_DataLoader_LDR_Manifest_Detail] (
[manifest_id] [varchar] (20) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
[order_num] [bigint] NULL ,
[track_code] [varchar] (20) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,

[box_type] [varchar] (20) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
[scan_time] [datetime] NULL ,
[scac_code] [varchar] (20) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
GO
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[BIOS_DataLoader_LDR_Manifest_Header] (
[trailer_id] [varchar] (100) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,

[destination_facility] [varchar] (20) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
GO
When the first TrackCodeid is NULL
all remaining NULL TrackCodeid is entered as null in the database table
but if the first/prev trackcodeID is not NULL then following null trackCODEID is populated with the prev trackcodeID and not as null in database
<TrackCodeId>ABCDEFG</TrackCodeId>
All Null TrackCOdeID is populated as ABCDEFG
if we remove ABCDEFG and then bulkload all null values are populated
if a null trackCODEID is to be inserted the prev trackCODEID must be null and must not contain any value
I am using a DAL and i want to insert a new row where one of the columns is DATE and it can be 'NULL'.
I am assigning SqlTypes.SqlDateTime.Null.
But when the date is saved in the database, i get the minvalue (1/01/1900) . Is there a way to put the NULL value in the database using DAL????how can i put an empty date in the database?
THANK YOU!!!
Hi,
I have fields in my table which allow nulls. Is it efficient to not insert anything (the field automatically shows up as null in this case) and leave or store some value into it. The field is a smallint field?
Thanks
We are writing a C application that is using ODBC to insert recordsinto a database. We have a NOT NULL column that can legitimately havean empty value, i.e. we know the value and it is empty (i.e. a zerolength string).We are using SQLBindParameter() to bind a variable to theparameterized insert statement <<in the form: INSERT INTO table VALUES(?, ?, ?)>>. We are using SQLExecDirect() to process the SQL.We are running into the problem where ODBC is converts the empty (zerolength) string into a NULL value and this errors due to the fact thatthe column is defined as NOT NULL.We do not want to redefine the column as NULL, becasue myunderstanding of the correct usage of a NULL column is to indicatethat a value is unknown or meaningless... in our case we know thevalue (it is empty) and an empty value has meaning within ourapplication.I'm sure that this issue has been seen and address thousands(millions?) of times... any guidance would be appreciated.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a pivot transform that pivots a batch type. After the pivot, each batch type has its own row with null values for the other batch types that were pivoted. I want to group two fields and max() the remaining batch types so that the multiple rows are displayed on one row. I tried using the aggregate transform, but since the batch type field is a string, the max() function fails in the package. Is there another transform or can I use the aggragate transform another way so that the max() will work on a string?

Hello everyone,
I am using DTS to transform data from foxpro.when it meets the date of NULL,it fails and says"Insert Error , column 4( 'Coloumn_name ',DBTYPE_DBTIMESTAMP), Status 6 data overflow ".
And then i try to open the DTS Transform Data task and do a preview of the data from the 'Source' side.The Null values are treated as "1899-12-30".
After reading something ,i try to write an ActiveX scripting Task to solve this problem using the function of "IsDate()",but it fails with exceptions.
Now I don't know what to do.could anyone give me some suggestion?Anything will be appreciated!ThankX in advance!
Hello - I have a column in a table (SQL 2005 EE) with a Data Type of smalldatetime and a Default Value of getdate(). When I insert a record from my webpage the new record contains the correct date via getdate(). However if I update the record from my webpage the date of the record then becomes NULL. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do about this from sql server? I am inserting/updating via an formview and ODS, using standard insert/update methods.
Cheers
Marco
Hi,
I am facing problem while inserting a Null value into a smalldatetime datatype field in sql server 2000 using code in vb 6.0
Error as : Type mismatch.
Kindly let me know how to insert Null or blank (dtDate = "") into a column.

how the hell you allocate a null value for a smalldatetime sql field?
Now, I'm putting a false date because of I'm stuck with this f.. and then I do an update:
.Parameters("@FecEnajenacion").Value = "1999-01-01"
error:
.Parameters("@FecEnajenacion").Value = vbNull
.Parameters("@FecEnajenacion").Value = Null
.Parameters("@FecEnajenacion").Value = SqlDbType.???????
I have a table that I would like to update with the current dateTime of Today. The Table Field is called "DateTimeStamp" with a format of SmallDateTime -- I'm using VS 2008.
When I use the following command and then cmd.ExecuteNonQuery -- the table is correclty filled in with the exception of the DateTimeStamp field. Instead of 3/23/2008, I get the value 1/1/1900 ...
SqlCommand cmd3 = new SqlCommand("UPDATE CameraPods SET CameraBlock1_ID = 98, CameraBlock2_ID = 99, Status = 1, DateTimeStamp = 3/3/2008");
any ideas?

I have a field which is currently of the "date time" data type. i want to convert it to smalldatetime, but everytime I try, i get an error of the "The conversion from datetime data type to smalldatetime data type resulted in a smalldatetime overflow error. " sort.
I have tried to find the values which are out of the smalldatetime range, with the following query
SELECT *
FROM midmar
WHERE bday BETWEEN '01/01/1900' AND '06/05/2079'
Which doesn't quite work, and gives me values that are actually between those two values listed.
I have also tried having the WHERE clause read:
WHERE bday <'06/06/2079' AND
bday>'01/01/1900'
and that doesn't really work either.
What's going on? Is there likely another problem besides the structuring of my queries?
From a text file I'm importing date values by a variable.
dFecha = Left(Row.Column21, 4) & "/" & Mid(Row.Column21, 5, 2) & "/" & Right(Row.Column21, 2)
After that I've got values as "0000-00-00" and obviously sql (at target smalldatetime) doesn't support them. How do I for to solve?
If IsDate(dFecha) Then
.Parameters("@FecEnajenacion").Value = dFecha
Else
.Parameters("@FecEnajenacion").Value = vbNull
End If
TIA

I'm trying to checking my production table table_a against a working table table_b (which i'm downlading data to)Here are the collumns i have in table_a and table_bDescription | FundID (this is not my PK) | Money I'm running an update if there is already vaule in the money collumn. I check to see if table_a matches table_b...if not i update table a with table b's value where FundID match up.What i'm having trouble on is if there is no record in table_a but there is a record in table_b. How can I insert that record into table_a? I would like to do all of this (the update and insert statement in one stored proc. if possible. )If anyone has this answer please let me know.Thanks,RB
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a DTSX package which reads values from a fixed-length text file using a data reader and writes some of the column values from the file to an Oracle table. We have used this DTSX several times without incident but recently the process started inserting NULL values for some of the columns when there was a valid value in the source file. If we extract some of the rows from the source file into a smaller file (i.e 10 rows which incorrectly returned NULLs) and run them through the same package they write the correct values to the table, but running the complete file again results in the NULL values error. As well, if we rerun the same file multiple times the incidence of NULL values varies slightly and does not always seem to impact the same rows. I tried outputting data to a log file to see if I can determine what happens and no error messages are returned but it seems to be the case that the NULL values occur after pulling in the data via a Data Reader. Has anyone seen anything like this before or does anyone have a suggestion on how to try and get some additional debugging information around this error?

Hi
can somebody explain me how I can assign a NULL value to a datetime type field in the script transformation editor in a data flow task.
In the script hereunder, Row.Datum1_IsNull is true, but still Row.OutputDatum1 will be assigned a value '0001-01-01' which generates an error (not a valid datetime). All alternatives known to me (CDate("") or Convert.ToDateTime("") or Convert.ToDateTime(System.DBNull.Value)) were not successful.
Leaving out the ELSE clause generates following error: Error: Year, Month, and Day parameters describe an un-representable DateTime.
If Not Row.Datum1_IsNull Then
Row.OutputDatum1 = Row.Datum1
Else
Row.OutputDatum1 = CDate(System.Convert.DBNull)
End If
Any help welcome.
Hello,
I have got a database with a datetime field. I insert a date into the database from a textbox. All is fine if someone enters a date. If someone enters nothing I want a null to be inserted. How do I do this?
Grant
how do you write an insert into statement and keep “<NULL>” in the null cells?
i was trying something like this BUT when you try to write an IS NULL statement it doesnt work.
ISNULL(dbo.TRUNK02_LastVersion_PayableClaims_01.MO D1, NULL) AS Mod1,
Is there a way, I can insert NULL value to "DT_Date" type Row Column using Script Component Transformation of Data flow?
View 8 Replies View RelatedHi,
My query "select blah, blah, rank from tablewithscores" will return results that can legitimately hold nulls in the rank column. I want to order on the rank column, but those nulls should appear at the bottom of the list
e.g.
Rank Blah Blah
1 - -
2 - -
3 - -
NULL - -
NULL - -
At present the NULLs are at the top of the list, but I do not want my ranking in descending order. Any suggestions?
Thanks

I am simply trying to use SQLCommand in .net to insert a record into a SQL Server 2005 table. There are 2 fields being pulled from a user input for that could have no values selected. In this case I want to insert a null value into the record. I get an error that Null is no longer supported and that I should use System.DBNull, but that can't be used as an expression.
How do I do this?
Thank you in advance.
Folks, this isn't exactly a 'Getting Started' question, but I couldn't find a more appropriate Application Development forum.
I'm porting an open source PHP application (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gallery) to use SQL Server as a backend. One of Gallery's unit test scripts tests the ability to insert a string containing a NULL character ( ). It's OK if the string is truncated during insertion, just so long as everything before the is there.
The string being inserted looks like:
$testString = "The NULL character should be escaped !";
(Note the between "escaped " and " !")
The error that the Gallery test script is getting is:
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Incorrect syntax near 'The NULL character should be escaped '.] in EXECUTE("INSERT INTO g2_PluginParameterMap (g_pluginType, g_pluginId, g_itemId, g_parameterName, g_parameterValue) VALUES ('module','unitTestModule',1,'test19476','The NULL character should be escaped !')")
It looks like SQL Server is complaining about the syntax. I've written a much simpler test script in the hopes of reproducing the problem, but I don't know if what I'm now hitting is the same problem or a different one.
My simple script is:
<?php
$localhost = exec("hostname");
$database = "gallery2";
$uid = "g2user";
$pwd = "g2pwd";
$connectString = "Host=PROVIDER=MSDASQL;DRIVER={SQL Server};";
$connectString .= "SERVER=$localhost\sqlexpress;";
$connectString .= "DATABASE=$database;";
$connectString .= "UID=$uid;PWD=$pwd";
$sqlTableDrop = "drop table ljmtemp";
$sqlTableCreate = "create table ljmtemp (col1 nvarchar(100))";
$sqlTableQuery = "select len(col1) from ljmtemp";
// Connect to the db
$db = new COM("ADODB.Connection") or die("Cannot start ADO");
$db->open($connectString);
// Drop & recreate the table
$db->Execute ($sqlTableDrop);
$db->Execute ($sqlTableCreate);
// Insert the test data
//$testString = "The NULL character should be escaped !";
$testString = "This is a test string.";
$res = $db->Execute("insert into ljmtemp (col1) values ('$testString')");
if (!$res) die ("INSERT failed");
// Disconnect from the db
$db->Close();
?>
And it results in:
C:MyServer>php testMsSqlInsertNull.php
PHP Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'com_exception' with message 'Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers
Description: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Unclosed quotation mark after the character string 'The NULL character should be escaped '.' in C:MyServer estMsSqlInsertNull.php:27

I'm not sure if this is the same problem as Gallery is reporting or another one.
It looks like somebody is treating the as a string terminator, but when i double the backslash the literal '
