Apr 22, 2008

i wanted to ask how to insert values from a single web form into two sql tables, i have been looking and the visual web developer i use doesnt seam to allow me to even atempt it
i've tried selecting all the values from two different tables and then adding those two tables to an insert function but it doesnt work likewise the update function
i have values in a table currently a reference number and i want to use this reference number to update the address values in this table so update this field.table1 and thisfield.table2 when ref number = @ refnumber the reference number is present in both tables and is linked PK to FK

Updating A Table By Both Inserting And Updating In The Data Flow

Sep 21, 2006

I am very new to SQL Server 2005. I have created a package to load data from a flat delimited file to a database table. The initial load has worked. However, in the future, I will have flat files used to update the table. Some of the records will need to be inserted and some will need to update existing rows. I am trying to do this from SSIS. However, I am very lost as to how to do this.

Any suggestions?

Inserting And Updating And Array Into An SQL Table

Dec 23, 2003

I have an asp.net project that displays a timesheet based on a fortnightly system.

It has a Y and X axis, i.e. Sun-Mon, Sun-Mon across the top and Categories of hour types accross the Y axis, i.e. Holidays, Overtime, Maintenance.

I was using a datagrid to gather the rows, but I need to have the whole grid in edit mode which is something that requires more coding. So I have swapped to a datalist.

It will take me 240 fields to store all the data in their corresponding fields. So I basically need to know if there is an easier way to store two dimensional array type data into an SQL table using a minimum of fields.

Inserting And Updating From An Import Table

Jun 9, 2006

SQLNewbie writes "I have a table 'ImportedListings' that is populated with data external to the database. This table is only used to hold the data until I can move it to the permanent table 'Listings' at which point 'ImportedListings' gets truncated to nothing. Both tables contain almost identical data and structure. There is a listing ID column available for joins.

Basically I need to compare each row in ImportedListing and if it already exists in Listing, UPDATE Listing with the new info. If the row in ImportedListing doesn't exist in Listing, I need to INSERT it.

Physically deleting rows from the listings table is not an option. Do you have any ideas on how I can do this? I initially tried using a temp table to hold the matching listing id's but I could not get figure out the update statement with this scenario.

Thanks for any help! I have been trying to hammer this out all night(I just started programming tsql)"

Deleting, Updating And Inserting---is It LOCKING The Table?

Aug 17, 2006

I have created a single Data Flow Task that reads a set of records from a source table and then makes determinations whether to insert, update or delete from a destination table. The data is basically being copied from one database to another with a small amount of data manipulation and lookups. The problem seems to be that when running the task, even a small amount of records read from the source table seem to take a long time for the task to finish. I feed the records into a Script Component (the brains) that sorts the records to three separate outputs. I use OLE DB Commands to perform the DELETE and UPDATE and an OLE DB Destination for INSERT. I thought that by using three separate database connections would help, but it just appears to be locked while trying to perform these commands against the same table.

Is there a way to control or route these three record sets in such a way as to perform them sequentially?

I know it's a bit of a simple question for some of you, but I'm just learning SSIS (but I like it!).

Thanks!

Updating Multiple Records In A Single Table?

Sep 3, 2014

I'm trying to update a checkbox from "False" to "True" within a single table for multiple records. I can update a single record using the script below. However, I'm having trouble applying additional Id's to the string.

(Works) - Update Name_Demo set KEY_CONTACT = 'true' where ID = 225249

(doesn't work) - Update Name_Demo set KEY_CONTACT = 'true' where ID = '225249, 210014, 216543'

It says query executes successfully but returned no rows.

SQL 2000: Inserting Multiple Rows Into A Single Table

Jul 20, 2005

To anyone that is able to help....What I am trying to do is this. I have two tables (Orders, andOrderDetails), and my question is on the order details. I would liketo set up a stored procedure that essentially inserts in the orderstable the mail order, and then insert multiple orderdetails within thesame transaction. I also need to do this via SQL 2000. Right now ihave "x" amount of variables for all columns in my orders tables, andall Columns in my Order Details table. I.e. @OColumn1, @OColumn2,@OColumn3, @ODColumn1, @ODColumn2, etc... I would like to create astored procedure to insert into Orders, and have that call anotherstored procedure to insert all the Order details associated with thatorder. The only way I can think of doing it is for the program to passme a string of data per column for order details, and parse the stringvia T-SQL. I would like to get away from the String format, and gowith something else. If possible I would like the application tosubmit a single value per variable multiple times. If I do it this waythough it will be running the entire SP again, and again. Anysuggestions on the best way to solve this would be greatlyappreciated. If anyone can come up with a better way feel free. Myonly requirement is that it be done in SQL.Thank you

Updating A Single Column On A Table SQL Server 2005 (45 Records), The Session Hangs...

May 12, 2007

Hello, I am pretty new with SQL Server 2005.

I have installed SQL Server Express Edition. I have migrated a set of tables from Oracl10g (by using Microsoft's Migration Tool Kit). While I am trying the following simple update command, the session hangs and it never finishes !!!!!!!!!!!!

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

select pos_key from pos_station where staff_key = 1105

POS_KEY
=======
NULL

update pos_station set pos_key = 1 where staff_key = 1105

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The table has a few constraints and a couple of indices in place.

Then I create another table (but no contraints or indices), just copy the data from the problematic one and the update WORKS (in msecs) :

update pos_station_new set pos_key = 1 where staff_key = 1105

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Is there any way to tell if the table (any table in SQL Server) is corrupted or not ?

How can I tell if a session is waiting for something and what is that something ?

Thank you very much for your help.

DataGridView/SQL Express - Updating Record Using Seperate Form

Dec 7, 2006

Hi,

I am currently using VC++/Cli 2005. In a project, I'm using a DataGridView control to show records from a SQL Express 2005 table. Instead of updating a specific item directly within DataGridView control, I would like to open a new form and allow user to update selected record/item within that form. The reason to update this way is conditionned by the fact that I have 3 levels of detail as following:

Level 0 Level 1 Level 2

1:N 1:N
Furniture --> Component --> Component

You all understand that update form of Level1 will/must include, as Level0 do, another DataGridView control to display/detail all related items issued from next level. This explains why I can't allow user to update Level 1 directly from DataGridView control.

I've searched in MSDN and even bought a few books on subject but unfortunately I found nothing on how to do it this way. All articles on DataGridView control were only showing how to update record directly from control.

My approach, I think, would be to transmit to my level1 updating form, as a single parameter, the selected DataRow object (or a brand new one if currently adding) issued from DataGridView and let user update it's content. When User finally leaves level0 update form, then I presume that DataGridView corresponding table would be automatically updated according to DataGridView's content.

What would be the proper way to do it? I would certainly appreciate to hear you view on this.

Also, what can I do if I want to refresh DataGridView's content when coming back from update form. Is it done automatically? I would certainly be sure that it reflects the reality, not only when I update it myself but also especially when other users could concurrently update same records?

Thanks in advance,

Stéphane

Inserting Data In SQL 2005 Using Javascript From A Form Object

Mar 4, 2008

I am new to ASP.NET. At present i am developing a web application in which i need to insert data in database(MS SQL 2005) from a form which uses only HTML controls. I need to use HTML controls so posting of form to the server is not done and hence i need to generate HTML controls using javascript. So the data in the form must be stored in the database. How this data can be inserted in the database is the problem and i think that javascript might be the solution for it.

How To Form A Single SQL Statement In A Datalist For A Challenging And Convoluted Problem ?

Aug 26, 2007

Hello, I'm really stuck at trying to figure out how to write out the proper SQL statement for my problem.   I'm relatively new to SQL, so this may not be so tough for some of you.  Basically, a user logs in (I'm using the default membership provider) and goes to his INBOX to see his list of messages sent to him.  The list is presented to him via a datalist.  Each item of the datalist contains a table of 2 columns and 1 row as pictured below.  The first box contains the user photo and user name of the person who SENT him the message (not the logged in user).  The second box contains the subject title of the message.
      FROM        |    SUBJECT   |  User Photo     |                    ||                       |    Subject     ||  User Name     |                    |
Here is the list of the relevant 4 tables of my database and the relevant fields.....
aspnet_Users tableUserId (used to link to Member table)UserName
Member tablememberId (int - primary key)UserId (guid - used to link to aspnet_Users table)primaryPhotoId (int - used to link to Photo table)
Photo tablephotoId (int - primary key)photoUrl (string - path to file on local drive)
Message tablemessageId (int - primary key)fromMember (int - connects with memberId from Member table)toMember (int - connects with memberId from Member table)subject (varchar(max))
So basically, from a simplistic high level point of view, the datalist is going to list all of the messages where Message.toMember = the logged in user.  The senders will be determined by the Member.fromMember fields.  Intuitive enough so far, I guess.   This is the SQL statement I have so far.....
SELECT aspnet_Users.UserName, Message.subjectFROM aspnet_Users, Member, MessageWHERE aspnet_Users.UserName = Profile.UserName AND aspnet_Users.UserId = Member.UserId AND Member.memberId = Message.toMember
Note that I'm grabbing the logged in user info from Profile.UserName.  So far, this SQL statement should make the datalist crank out all messages that were sent to the logged in user.  HOWEVER, how would I modify this so that the datalist generates the username of the sender, NOT the receiver (aka person who logged in)?  Do you see the core of my dilemna here?  I'm trying to get a resultset based on the Message.toMember (the logged in user), but also want data on the sender (the Message.fromMember so I can use the username and the photo of the SENDER, not the person logged in aka the RECEIVER).  Currently, the aspnet_Users in the SELECT statement gets the username of the logged in person, not the sender.
And once we solve the issue of retrieving the sender's username, I also have to get his MAIN photo (I say "main" since a user can have multiple photos and the main one is determined by the value in a given member's primaryPhotoId field of the Member table) ??  I'm a newbie to ASP.NET and to databases in general so this may not be as tough for most of you and perhaps you're laughing at the simplicity hehe.   The SQL statement so far asks to retrieve information based on the logged in user.  But how do I also tell it to now go grab the Message.fromMember data, go back to the Member table to A)get the username after going back to the aspnet_Users table and B) to get the Member.primaryPhotoId, and then finally to the Photo table where the Photo.photoUrl string value is obtained..... and still hang on to the results I have up until now?  And since I'm using the provided datalist control, I think I need to get all the results I need with just one SQL statement.  This is indeed very very complicated for me lol.
This problem has been giving me migraines this whole weekend.  Has anyone been through such a problem before?  Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance.

Form Field Returns Name With Double Quotes Instead Of Single Quote During Update Process.

Oct 3, 2007

I've a weird problem in my application. In of the pages, while trying to update the text box "Name", when I enter Linda's test, it gets saved as Linda''s test. I'm not sure if this is a problem due to SQL server. When I look at the stored procedure, I don't anything different. Also, when I update the table directly in SQL Server, the result is displayed in single quote. But if I update the field thro' the application, the returned name is with double quotes instead of single quote.  Has any of you faced problems like this? What am I missing? What do I need to do to get the name saved the way I entered (with single quotes) instead of double quotes?

Updating/Inserting Rows

Jul 16, 2002

Does anybody have a sample SQL script that will select table A and compare it to table B. If a row exists in both table A and table B, it will update the columns in table B with the columns in table A. If the row does not exist in table B, it will insert a row in table B using the row in table A. Is this possible?

Thanks Mitch

Inserting Row With Single Quote

Oct 5, 2006

I'm inserting a row of people's names and addresses to a table. This seems to work great, unless the person has ' in their name, for example O' Riordan. When the address has single quote (such as Wilder's Path), I'd get the same error, unclosed quote when inserting the row.

What would be the best way to work around this, other than read the line and replace it with a space.

I am having the problem of when i enter data into the text boxes and click update, nothing gets inserted or updated and whats worst of all no error message appears. Hi, I'm trying to store large strings to a database, so am using thetext field type (LongText). I have used this before when storing thehtml of a webpage, and was able to store more than 255 characters byusing just a normal update sql statement. Now I'm trying to store thebody of research papers, and must be doing something different, as Ican only store 255 characters. Can someone explain why SQL Server doesn't like what I am doing -should I be using the WriteText / UpdateText function? If so, pleaseexplain by example how I would do that, and why doing that works. Thanks so much,Iain

Converting Empty String To Null When Inserting/updating

Mar 10, 2006

I am using the following query to calculate date differences:select ..........DATEDIFF(d,  recruitment_advertising.advertising_date, career_details.RTS_Email AS Datetime) AS Ad_to_RTS_days FROM .....I have stored all my dates as NVARCHAR because of the issues with localization. If the value is an empty String my output is eg: -38700. which is way off and incorrect. Some of the values in my table are NULL and they produce the correct result. Is there a T-SQL statement to replace empy Strings with the NULL value in my tables.I'd like to use it as a trigger when inserting or updating to convert empty strings to NULLbefore the values are inserted. Thanks guys.

Inserting And Updating Unicode Strings Via Oracle Provider For OLE DB

Mar 8, 2007

We've installed the Oracle provider for OLE DB on SQL Server 2005, which has the default collation (SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS), and we've created a linked server for the Oracle 9.2.0.5 database, which has AL32UTF8 as the database character set. We can successfully insert strings into VARCHAR2 columns on Oracle from SQL Server via EXEC SP_EXECUTESQL('INSERT OPENQUERY(...) VALUES(...)') -- as long as the strings (whether selected from NVARCHAR columns on SQL Server or specified as literals with the N prefix during testing) only contain Windows-1252 characters.

If the SQL statement contains a character above U+00FF, the string on the Oracle side is incorrectly/doubly encoded; there are nearly (but not exactly) 4 bytes per character instead of the 1 or 2 you'd expect from ASCII/Latin-1 characters encoded as UTF-8.

We've tried reconfiguring the linked server: collation compatible = false, use remote collation = true, and collation name = Latin1_General_BIN2. But that had no effect.

What is the correct way to do this?

Thanks!

Best Practice For Updating Single Field In N Rows

Jan 16, 2006

Hi I haven't included DDL etc as this is theoretical at this time. I can rustle up an illustrative example if required.Following applies to disconnected environment. In general, most edits are broad (i.e. n fields affected) against a single record. However, there are certain circumstances where a single field will be edited against a deep (n) set of records. So business request:User needs to access and edit n records at a time (for arguments sake n is unlikely to be enourmous - say 50 max) but only editing one single field, and always the same field. The values for this edited field will differ for each record. Initially retrieving data for the app is no problem, nor is identifying those records that have been edited. What is the best means of updating the table? There are, to my mind, three ways of dealing with the latter senario - 1) Client calls the server n times editing a record at the time.2) Client creates a csv string and passes to sproc. Sproc parses string using some UDF split function (probably chucking into table variable) and updates using a single set set based operation.3) Client creates some flat file or other that is BULK inserted (or similar) by SQL Server. 3 - I think would only be an option if n was a very large number and or having the changes immediately reflected in the data is not priority.1 - would create a chatty app and presumably put the most load on the server. So I am left thinking 2 is (depending on circumstances) the best method. Is this fair? Are there any particular considerations gotchas I should be aware of? I know where to get hold of as many TSQL split functions as I could want so I'm not looking for code just opinions. OR - am I just plain wrong? Is there a better alternative or am I dismissing the other two methods prematurely? Thanks in advance

Inserting Multiple Rows With A Single INSERT INTO

Jul 23, 2005

Hi,I have an application running on a wireless device and being wireless Iwant it to use bandwidth as efficiently as possible. Therefore, I wantthe SQL statement that it uploads to the SQL Server to be as efficientas possible. In one instance, I give it four records to upload, whichcurrently I have as four seperate SQL statements seperated by a ";".However, all the INSERT INTO... information is the same each time, theonly that changes is the VALUES portion of each command. Also, I haveto have the name of each column to receive the data (believe it or not, these columns are only a small subset of the columns in the table). Here is my current SQL statement:INSERT INTO tblInvTransLog ( intType, strScreen, strMachine, strUser, dteDate, intSteelRecID, intReleaseReceiptID, strReleaseNo, intQty,dblDiameter, strGrade, HeatID, strHeatNum, strHeatCode, lngfkCompanyID)VALUES (1, 'Raw Material Receiving', '[MachineNo]', '[CurrentUser]','3/21/2005', 888, 779, '2', 5, 0.016, '1018', 18, '610T142', 'K8',520);INSERT INTO tblInvTransLog ( intType, strScreen, strMachine, strUser, dteDate, intSteelRecID, intReleaseReceiptID, strReleaseNo, intQty,dblDiameter, strGrade, HeatID, strHeatNum, strHeatCode, lngfkCompanyID)VALUES (1, 'Raw Material Receiving', '[MachineNo]', '[CurrentUser]','3/21/2005', 888, 779, '2', 9, 0.016, '1018', 30, '14841', 'B9', 344);Since the SQL statement INSERT INTO portion remains the same everytime, it would be good if I could have the INSERT INTO portion onlyonce and then any number of VALUES sections, something like this:INSERT INTO tblInvTransLog (intType, strScreen, strMachine, strUser, dteDate, intSteelRecID, intReleaseReceiptID, strReleaseNo, intQty,dblDiameter, strGrade, HeatID, strHeatNum, strHeatCode, lngfkCompanyID)VALUES (1, 'Raw Material Receiving', '[MachineNo]','[CurrentUser]', '3/21/2005', 888, 779, '2', 5, 0.016, '1018', 18,'610T142', 'K8', 520)VALUES (1, 'Raw Material Receiving', '[MachineNo]','[CurrentUser]', '3/21/2005', 888, 779, '2', 9, 0.016, '1018', 30,'14841', 'B9', 344);But this is not a valid SQL statement. But perhaps someone with a morecomprehensive knowledge of SQL knows of way. Maybe there is a way tostore a string at the header of the command then use the string name ineach seperate command(??)

Unspecified Error When Inserting/updating Record Using SqlCeResultSet On Sql Compact

Nov 14, 2007

Hi,

Inside a single transaction I'm inserting/updating multiple records into multiple tables, in this order:
table 1 record 1
table 2 record 1
table 3 record 1
table 1 record 2
table 2 record 1
table 1 record 3
table 2 record 3
table 3 record 3

Now I'm getting an unspecified error on a certain table:

Unspecified error [ 3,-1300704038,-1834095882,activitypointerBase,x lock (x blocks),PAG (idx): 1078 ]

From msdn I see that:

PAG (idx) means a lock on an index page.

x lock means an exclusive lock:

Indicates a data modification, such as an insert, an update, or a deletion. Ensures that multiple updates cannot be made to the same resource at the same time. (I assume that multiple updates within the SAME transaction can be made, only multiple updates from different transaction cannot be made, right?)
I cannot find any reference to this error message and don't know what the numbers mean. Maybe it relates to data that can be found in the sys.lock_information table like explained here, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms172932.aspx, but I'm not sure.

Furthermore, the sys.lock_information table is empty. I haven't been able to reproduce the problem myself. I only received an error log and the database to investigate it.

So, does anybody have an idea what this error message means and what I can do to troubleshoot this?

Thanks,
Jeffry

Newbie Q: Inserting Strings With Single Or Double Quotes

Sep 15, 1999

Hi: Got a newbie question that's been giving me fits! Basically I'm replicating what's going on here on this board...creating a "posting" interface that takes the "message" and inserts it into a table using an ADODB connection (using INSERT INTO table name, tablecells and VALUES)

However, if someone types in a single or double quote in the body of the message, I get an error similar to this:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e14'

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Line 1: Incorrect syntax near 's'.

/test.asp, line 29

I think I understand why it's happening (SQL is interpreting the quote mark as a string-end), but what am I supposed to do to get around it?
