I've running MSDE on a win xp box with SP2. The SQL server service manager indicates that the SQL server is running. I'm using Visual Studio 2003. According to the install page for 101 VB and C# Code Samples I should install the .NET frameword samples db.. See http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=08E3D5F8-033D-420B-A3B1-3074505C03F3&displaylang=en
I cd to the appropriate dir and run osql -E -S (local)NetSDK -i InstNwnd.sql (the cmd given on the page noted above). I get the following error:

I'm a newbie to .NET and SQL server so this makes no sense to me. If the SQL server service manager indicates that the SQL server is running why do I get that error and what is the work around?
Thanks .NET great ones for helping a newbie get off the ground...

Hi: I'm just getting started with ASP.net and am trying to install MSDE. I am getting the error message : Instance specified name is invalid. I have followed the directions in the downloadpage. Any help??
I am running Windows XP Pro. When trying to install MSDE, sql2ksp3, i go to the command line and enter: setup SAPWD=somegreatpassword SECURITYMODE=SQL and off it goes, gathering information and starting to install.
After a short period of time where the status bar shows about 9 seconds left the status bar runs backwards down to zero and installation stops.
No error message, no crashes, just packs up its tent and goes away.
I have tried running setup from a batch file with the same results.
I have turned off my antivirus program as well as all other programs.
I followed all instructions, then I got an example from microsoft on creating a database, it isjust a visual basic example, it has a button create database and it says sql server not found but i can see it on the tray that it is running and using the web interface i can see the databases so i dont know why doesnt the microsoft created example doesnt work. Thank you
I need help installing MSDE. I am using Windows XP. When I download it and try to set the password with the Command Prompt, it doesn't work. When I setup XP my username became the Admin. When I open the Command Prompt, it defaults into my documents and setting - I can't get a C: prompt. My login is the Admin and the old Administrator account isn't listed anywhere on my computer. Am I screwed? Do I have to reinstall XP and have the seperate Admin account? Please help.
I am having a problem with installing MSDE. I do not have SQL Server 2000 installed on my computer, but I am getting the error, "A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same..." If I am not running SQL Server, how can I get an SA password so I can complete the install. Thanks for the help in advance.
I've downloaded sql2ksp3. After I have extracted the file, I found MSDE folder and I ran the setup.exe. Halfway through the installation, it says the instance name specified is invalid.
Hi, are days that i'm trying to install MSDE on my computer (windows XP service pack 1). The problem is that when I run the setup program from console using SAPWD="(Some password)" SecurityMode=SQL, it fails with that error log:

Hi, I am trying to teach myself ASP.NET from the SAMS 24 Hrs book and I am trying to install MSDE for use with the web matrix project.
I think I succesfully installed it the first time I tried but entered a four digit SAPWD password not knowing it needed to be strong. I clicked on the data tab in the web matrix project as instructed to open the database and entered my user and password but it gave me some error message.
Now when I click the data tab it say I need to install MSDE on my computer and links me to www.asp.net.
Then when I try to install MSDE after it has downloaded, it gives me this error message. ----- 'Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and setup error logs for more information.'---
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling everything as well as everything else I can think of.
I would be forever grateful if someone could help me out with this.
after uninstalling my msde now i am not able to reinstall it. In logfile message in "failed due to stop my service of control manager". i couldnot understand it means. plz help.
Sorry if this seems to be very basic question. But after 5 hours I am thinking may be I am missing something.
I had always setup the dbs in server environment and I had never any issues but on my new Vaio Laptop with XP. Last time it was rather easy and I can not remember such issues. I downloaded (MSDE 2000) Release A from Microsoft and setting it up.
I set it up with the with the same parameters using an .ini file, I used Notepad to create a file named MyParameters.ini with these contents:
I find that my Visual studio is showing the instance at "Vaio/MSSQL" where Vaio is my Laptop. The setup created a folder in D:MSDEMSSQL$MSSQL and not in the target directory MSDE!!
Also my enterprise manager can not find it at all.
Also In visual studio I dont seem to be able to connect using my sa_password.
I get the following message and I am not in safe mode
any ideas
The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows on safe mode or if the Windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.
When a double click setup.exe, I get the following message:
“SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine Setup
SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine cannot be installed on this computer. This product requires Microsoft Windows NT Version 4.0 Service Pack 5 or higher. Please download the service pack from www.microsoft.com prior to installing.
My machine is running Windows 2000 5.00.2195 Service Pack 4.
I'm trying (and have been for ages) to install a MSDE server with a different instance name than the default. Im setting the instancename when using the setup.exe file and all seems to install fine, but when I then restart my system the SQL icon appears in the system tray but the white circle is completely empty. It says that it is not connected.
If i install with the default instance name then all seems to work fine.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong and what I can do to fix this problem?
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge what would be best way of installing msde with vb application I created vb app with msde database , right now app uses sql server, iam planning to move sql database to msde and distribute that with vb app. What would be best approach for distributing and installing those files? Does vb package deployment will do the trick or I should acuire some professional setup program ?? Thanks Robert
I am new to MSDE and want to deploy it in my company (because it is free). However, when I install it in a W2K professional machine, there is a messagebox saying that a "strong SA password is required". How can I solve theproblem?Arthur Cheung(The MSDE engine was downloaded from the microsoft sql server web page)
I am in the process of preforming backwards compatibility testing inside our software with our sql statements. In the past we have run into problems where we write our SQL code in 2005 and SQL 2k cannot handle that code. (ie: nested sub selects within the select statement) I want to maximize effiency and install MSDE 2k on my Vista test machine but i have heard rumors that this could be potentially bad. Also if anyone has done this can you explain how to set the instance name if you already have sql 2005 installed? I would assume this would be done in the setup.ini in the MSDE folder before launch. If this cannot be done i can certainly put a XP test machine online for me to dial into and install MSDE 2k as well but it would have an existing 2005 session on it and i would need to find out how to name the instance before msde installed.
I tried to install the MSDE 2000A to have a copy of the SQL Server northwind datbase on my machine. When I was installing it I got an error that said the following......
"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same. Refer to readme for more details. Set up will now exit"
MSI (c) (A4:AC) [14:17:38:828]: Grabbed execution mutex. MSI (c) (A4:AC) [14:17:38:828]: Cleaning up uninstalled install packages, if any exist MSI (c) (A4:AC) [14:17:38:828]: MainEngineThread is returning 1603
This is just the last little bit I can post the whole thing if necessary. The installation stops and rolls back anyone have any idea what's causing this to fail? The server service is started and running normally.....
I installed MSDE desktop with no problems... months later when creating a database, I stupidily forgot the "sa" password that I set during setup... So I decided to unistall MSDE and reinstall it, this time documenting the username and password... BUT now it is giving me errors which I am unable to solve... is there anyone out there that might be able to help me??
I go to a command-line, locate the directory where the install program lives and type in "setup SAPWD=(a password) SecurityMode=SQL" and it returns the follow error message: "Setup Failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and setup error logs"
My problem is I don't know where to locate these error logs. Please if anyone can help me with this problem I would greatly appreciate it.
Hi. I am taking a certification class for which I recieved MSDE 2000 SQL server to use. I had a version that came with my textbook installed, and uninstalled it to use this one. Now I can no longer install either version, when I try it gives me a "instance name specified is not valid" error message when I start the installation, then kills it. Anyone have any ideas?
I am Access user of both BE and FE. I would like to set my BE with SQL
Therefore, as trial I just downloaded MSDE2000A.Exe a Desktop SQL Engine from Microsoft. I need to install it. But due to some technical aspect (which I might not understand) I could not install it. Bcz whenever I am trying to install its setup file, it ask me a strong password. How to set it ? or how to supply it I dont know...
I dowloaded the MSDE 2000A and got an error when I was trying to install it. The error was as follows.......
" A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use a SAPWD switch to supply the same. Refer to readme for more details. Set up will now exit."
I have some trouble installing SP4 onto an existing MSDE 2000 (with SP3). I run setup like described in the readme: "setup /upgradesp sqlrun" => Setup starts and I get: "Product already installed ... " Im using the MSDE version of the SP4 setup, the MSSQL version Im running is 8.00.760 Ive also tried to use the UPGRADEUSER and UPGRADEPWD arguments, but with the same results.
I clicked on the setup.exe file which is located in C:sql2ksp3MSDE directory , then the following Error message appear to me:
========================================= ---------------------------------------- Microsoft SQL Sever Desktop Engine ---------------------------------------- The instance name spacified is invalid.

What is the solution??
FYI: I am using: MS Visual Studio.NET 2003 MS Windows XP SP1a MS SQL Server 2000
