I have installed MSDE2000 (name: mypcsql2000, port 1433) and sql2005 Express (mypcsql2005, port 1434) on my WinXP.
I'm developing some application and I need to test both server.
It has worked fine about 1 year, but last month i got error message.
When i'm trying to connect to SQL2005 from my application or import data from Excel, i get error message:
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Invalid Connection()).]Invalid connection.
I can access SQL2005 with Management Studio or cmd line (sqlcmd). But not with Excel (or with my application).
MSDE2000 works fine, i haven't any problems.
Last weekend I have reinstalled my WinXP and also MSDE2000, SQL2005 Express.
Worked fine, but when turn on automatic updates ON and afterwards installed latest updates, the problem is here again...
Any idea to solve this problem?
(sorry for my english...)

This may be a stupid newbie question, but being that I'm not a DBA I'm going to ask it anyway.
We discovered a problem with a clients server (Windows 2003 SBS) when we tried to install Veritas Backup Exec. Backup Exec requires an instance of either SQLMSDE or full SQL. This server has full SQL 2000 sp3a installed on it with a working account application. When backup exec trys to create it's instance it fails.
Investigating further...when I go into Enterprise Manager (logged in as Domain Admin) I get an error when I select the local server.
I.E.
"A connection could not be established to (LOCAL).
Reason: Data source name not found and no default driver specified.
Please verify SQL Server is running and check your SQL Server registration properties. blah blah blah.
Okay the server is running. The accounting application (client/server) is still working. I right click on the server and select "New Server Registration" for the field "server" I click the browse button and the "Active Servers" box is empty..:shocked:
I went to check the "Data Sources" under drivers, that field is blank. (no drivers installed). I downloaded MS's component checker and it says "MDAC 2.8 on Windows server 2003 sp1" is installed.
At this point I have exhausted my knowledge of MS-SQL server. My goal is to get BackupExec installed and NOT break the existing accounting application.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Will it be the same default as for the'typical' installation?Thanks

Hi, though i've been using sql server 2000 developer edition for awhile, I guess i overlooked the fact that the full-text search tool was never installed and i never needed it until now. Anyway, tried installing it today and get this error:
Installation of Microsoft Full-Text Search Engine Package Failed (-2147220991) 0x80040201
An event was unable to invoke any of the subsribers
I have no idea what this means - can you help me to get this installed correctly? I did just install service pack 4, and i tried reinstalling the components, tried rebuilding the registery of the current instance, and even tried creating a new instance with hopes that the new instance would install the full-text component - which it did not.
Any suggestions? I just completely uninstalled sql2000 and did a full-reinstallation and still it wont let me install the full-text search engine component - i check the checkbox in the installation wizard and then it gives me the same error as above.
Thanks ahead!
Dan

Hello,
When SQL05dev is installed a SQL05 version of Visual Studio (SQL05-VS) is also installed (called the €œSQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio€?). The SQL05-VS installs files into a €œC:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsinnVSShellCommon7IDE€? directory (and other directories - not described here).
When the full version VS05pro is installed it installs/uses files in a €œC:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDE€? directory.
The number of files in these two directories is different €“ the directory for VS05pro has (of course) many many more files than the directory for SQL05-VS. On the surface this seems ok since the install of VS05pro should supersede the install of the SQL05-VS and when VS05 is started it utilizes the files from the VS05pro directory and picks up the functions from the SQL05-VS (like SSIS, SSAS, SSRS and such).
But what about the SQL05-VS Common7/IDE directory? In this directory are 64 files that exist in both directores (556 files are not found in the VS05pro Common7/IDE directory). Additionally, there are 10 files that have different versions (mostly having to do with SQL-CE) €“ newer versions are in the SQL05-VS directory.
I€™m confused. Is Microsoft going to support revision changes (Service Packs and such) to both directories? I suppose so, but this introduces possible versioning problems when SQL is updated but VS is not or VS is updated but SQL is not.
I guess I do not understand the rational for not maintaining a single VS directory structure and the problems that this creates. Microsoft is utilizing VS as the IDE for SQL but to not have a really good matching installation layout with the full version of VS is wacky €“ to say the least. Maybe M$ considers maintaing the versions of 64 files to be unimportant for the correct functioning of VS???
Is Installing SQL05dev and VS05pro on the same machine supported?

Think this problem was cuased by installing the service pack 1 hotfixes in the wrong order?

Given than once SQL Server 2005 is installed, SQL Server Studio has to
be used instead of Enterprise manager, can both SQL 2000 and 2005 be
used on the same machine, be it development or production? (The second
one to be installed probably would be a named instance.)
Any experiance of doing this or a pointer to a Microsoft recommendation would be appreciated.

Hi there,
I'm trying to install the common components for SQL 2005 on a server that already has Reporting Services 2005 installed on it. It keeps comng up with an error:
"To change an existing instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to a different edition of SQL Server 2005, you must run SQL Server 2005 Setup from the command prompt and include the SKUUPGRADE=1 parameter."
The Reporting Services install has had SP2 applied to it, would that be what is messing up the install?
I have very little experience with SQL so any info would be helpful.
Thanks!

Hello!,
I'm trying to connect from a local server to a remote server using the OPENROWSET function (SQL 2000).
I'm having problems with the authentication, if I put a "SQL" user, everything goes Ok, but if I change the SQL user for a windows NT user, I get the error "login failed for user 'xx'"
For example, this query works fine:
SELECT a.*
FROM OPENROWSET('SQLOLEDB','myserver';'sqluser';'mypassword',
'SELECT * FROM myDataBase.dbo.myTable') AS a
But if I try WinNT login, it fails...
SELECT a.*
FROM OPENROWSET('SQLOLEDB','myserver';'MyDomainMyWinNTUser';'ThePassword',
'SELECT * FROM myDataBase.dbo.myTable') AS a
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

Help!
I am using Script Transformation to output a new column as image[DT_IMAGE]
field to store serialized object. In the VB script, the sample code as
Row.serializedobject.AddBlobData ( binaryArrayReturnedFromC#dll )
The package always runs fine on my developing machine and will halt on other
machine at AddBlobData after certain number row records were processed. I am
stuck here. Anyone has any suggestion?
What I need is reading data from mutiple tables in one database and writing
into a single table in another datable. In order preserve all the columns
data, I use input column fields to construct a new object and then serialize
it, and store the serialize data into detination db table. (The object and
serialization function is coming from c# dll.)
Dim b As BusinessLicense = New BusinessLicense()
b.ApprovalDate = Row.approvaldate
b.BusinessId = Row.busid
b.BusinessName = Row.busname
b.NaicsCode = Row.naicscode
b.NaicsDescription = Row.naicsdescr
b.OwnerName = Row.ownername
b.Phone = Row.phone
b.Pkey = Row.pkey
b.RenewalDate = Row.renewaldate
b.StartDate = Row.startdate
b.Suite = Row.suite
Row.serializedobject.AddBlobData(Serializer.Serialize(b)) '''----This is blocking line
Row.infoType = BusinessLicense.TYPE
Both machine is xp with sp2. and standard SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06

Hi to everyone,
I'm facing a problem that drives me crazy. I've a web application that has the following problem. When I test the application on my developement machine all runs fine, but when I put into production server there is a problem in connection pooling. Look at the following image, the blue line is the number of connection in the pool and the violet line is the number of connection reclaimed. From the image it is clear that connection are returned on the pool only in block, maybe when the garbage collection pass and reclaim the object. The strange thing is that on my developement machine all is good, and also I'm using Enterprise Library and the connection are managed internally.- Thanks to everyone for any help.

running the procedure as a Domain user results in a failed job/stored proc.
also creating an sql login and attempting to run it as that user also fails. How can I solve this problem ?
