Intermittent Openquery Error ..The OLE DB Provider 'MSDASQL' Indicates That The Object Has No Columns..
Jul 20, 2005
Help,
I am running a pass through query to oracle from SQL server 2000 as
follows;
select * from openquery(nbsp, 'select * from FND_FLEX_VALUES')
I have run this query through both DTS and the query analyzer and get
the foloowing error;
Server: Msg 7357, Level 16, State 2, Line 3
Could not process object 'select * from FND_FLEX_VALUES'. The OLE DB
provider 'MSDASQL' indicates that the object has no columns.
OLE DB error trace [Non-interface error: OLE DB provider unable to
process object, since the object has no columnsProviderName='MSDASQL',
Query=select * from FND_FLEX_VALUES'].
The really strange thing is, I'll get this error the first time I
execute the query but if I execute it immeadiatley after it will run
fine.
Any help would be most appreciated!
Cheers

I understand that the MSDASQL.dll is not available in 64 bit (unless you are running 2008 beta 3). I also understand that you can setup 32 bit ODBC without issues (using ODBCAD32.exe in WOW directory). My issue is how does SQL 2005 64 bit see these ODBC links? What is everyone doing to get around this? I want to be able to use openquery. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I just installed the latest VS 2008 C# Express and SSCE 3.5. I am trying to test the "LINQ to SQL" feature. I added a data connection to Nortwind.sdf, selected "Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 (.NET Framework Data Provider for Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5)" as data provider, tested the connection, and get the following error when I drag and drop the "Customers" table on the design surface "The selected object(s) use an unsupported database provider" ?. I can create new tables and view existing tables etc. except droppinjg it on the design surface. What am I doing wrong?
The installation on my WindowsXP machine went without a hitch.

Hi,
I'm working on an OLE DB provider. This provider is supposed to retrieve data from managed application running in background. The data retrieval is handled by C# component communicating with source application via remoting, the data are then exposed via component's COM interface. OLE DB provider itself instantiates the communication component.
Now, the problem: this worked ok in SQL server 2000, but it doesn't seem to work in SQL server express edition. Concretely, the communication component fails to get created (CoCreateInstance ends with 'class not registered') and SQL server logs this:
2007-08-24 14:48:49.42 spid51 Error: 6511, Severity: 16, State: 20.
2007-08-24 14:48:49.42 spid51 Failed to initialize the Common Language Runtime (CLR) v2.0.50727 with HRESULT 0x80131022. You may fix the problem and try again later.
I've googled a bit and found out someone else getting this message, and he was told something like 'trying to load CLR in some cases is disabled in newer (>2000) versions of SQL server'.
Now, I have very little knowledge of SQL server, CLR integration etc., so I'm not sure whether this applies to my case as well, but I think so - that problematic COM object is C#-based.
I'd be glad for any hints, ideas how to solve this issue, I just need the OLE DB provider to be able to access that managed application.
Thanks,L.

Hi,
Basically the error that I am getting is in our test automation when running as non-admin on the box (regular user). We use .Net C# SQLConnection class to connect to SQL express 2005 impersonating with admin credentials. After getting the connection we try to execute a select command and it some time fails with following error:
A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The handle is invalid.) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.ThrowExceptionAndWarning(TdsParserStateObject stateObj) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParserStateObject.ReadSniError(TdsParserStateObject stateObj, UInt32 error) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParserStateObject.ReadSni(DbAsyncResult asyncResult, TdsParserStateObject stateObj) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParserStateObject.ReadPacket(Int32 bytesExpected) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParserStateObject.ReadBuffer() at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParserStateObject.ReadByte() at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.Run(RunBehavior runBehavior, SqlCommand cmdHandler, SqlDataReader dataStream, BulkCopySimpleResultSet bulkCopyHandler, TdsParserStateObject stateObj) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataReader.ConsumeMetaData() at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataReader.get_MetaData() at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.FinishExecuteReader(SqlDataReader ds, RunBehavior runBehavior, String resetOptionsString) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteReaderTds(CommandBehavior cmdBehavior, RunBehavior runBehavior, Boolean returnStream, Boolean async) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteReader(CommandBehavior cmdBehavior, RunBehavior runBehavior, Boolean returnStream, String method, DbAsyncResult result) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteReader(CommandBehavior cmdBehavior, RunBehavior runBehavior, Boolean returnStream, String method) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior behavior, String method) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteReader()
This happen only in the non-admin scenario mentioned above. Any idea what is triggering this?
Thanks in advance for all replies.

I've seen several posts on linking an AS/400 to a SQL 2000 server.
I have created the link, I can use DTS packages to get data to/from the AS/400 to the SQL Server. However, I cannot write any SQL statements against the AS/400. Here is a basic one that doesn't work...
Select * from openquery(jdedwardspy, 'Select * from mhscrp.f0006')
If you look quickly enough, you can see that it does return a row or so, but then that is replaced by this error...
[OLE/DB provider returned message: [IBM][Client Access Express ODBC Driver (32-bit)]Driver not capable.]
We're running Client Access V5R2, SQL Server 2000 SP3 and MDAC 2.7.1.
Any suggestions?

Hi all,
I have created a System DSN to a MYOB database file. I have SQL 2000 and 2005 Express editions installed on the same machine. I am logged in to PC as Local Admin. I am also logged into 2005 Express using 'sa' to avoid any security problems.
Creating a New Linked Server using SQL 2000 works fine using the System DSN I created, however, If I use exactly the same settings (Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC) I get an error message.
"The OLE Provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "sname" reported an error. The provider did not give an information about the error."
"Cannot initilize the data source object of OLE DB Provider "MSDASQL" for Linked Server "name". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7399)"
I have installed SL 2005 Express SP2.
As another test I created a data source using the same System DSN in Excel. It worked fine and queries the MYOB database file.
Any ideas to assist me??
Thanks.

I am having trouble with a linked server using MSDASQL. I'm connecting to a PostgreSQL database and pulling over data. This process has been working fine.
In trying to pull data from a different client database (same schema), I received an error that the MSDASQL couldn't read the column names.
The actual problem I want help on is that after this happens, I am no longer able to make valid connections to any of my Linked Servers using MSDASQL. The only way I can get my other linked servers to work again is to restart the SQL Service. Usually this is impossible for me to do because of the number of active users.
Two questions:
1) Is there another way to restart a more targeted service or sub-set to reset MSDASQL connections, and clear out my problem?
2) Any idea why I'm getting this error connecting to PostgreSQL on a large dataset when it worked fine for a small dataset using the same linked server? "The provider reported an unexpected catastrophic failure."
Any help is appreciated.

Hi everyone,
I'v finally managed to get a New Linked Server setup on SQL 2005 Express SP2 using the 'Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers' MSDASQL. I have a Database setup on the SQL 2005 Express Database Engine which contains a query that OPENQUERY's the linked server. The query executes OK.
The problems in when I link an Access 2003 SP2 .adp file to the SQL 2005 Database Engine database. All objects, including the query containing the OPENQUERY (to the linked server) appear. However, when I run the same query within Access I get the following error:
"The OLE DB Provider for Linked Server "name" reported an error."
"The Provider reported an unexpected catastropic failure"
So the query works running within SQL 2005 Management Studio, but the same query doesn't work running within an Access 2003 SP2 ADP. I've closed down SQL 2005 Management Studio, but the same error is displayed.
I didn't know if the problem lies in Access 2003 SP2 or SQL 2005 Express SP2.
Any takers?? (I haven't logged this Thread in an Access forum)
Any assistance is appreciated.

We experience the 40 error when our Asp.net code runs under IIS and uses named pipes to a sql server 2005 named instance.
We've tried all suggestions found on blogs and KB articles such as making sure the named pipes protocol is enabled, making sure the Browser service is started, making sure Allow Remote Connections is enabled, making sure we're not using Asp.Net 2.0 membership providers, and the list goes on and on.
We boiled it down to a simple test scenario. We open a SqlConnection to the sql 2005 box in the code with the intention of binding a datareader to a gridview, but it never gets that far because the connection.Open() fails.
If we run this test application as a virtual directory in IIS and Asp.Net 2.0, the connection.Open() fails.
If we run this test application from Visual Studio .Net using Cassini (PWS), the connection.Open() succeeds and binds to the gridview.
What could be causing the connection to fail under IIS but succeed under Cassini? We've tried setting IIS to run as a domain user and with digest authentication enabled. That made no difference.
Any help or insight is appreciated!

myConnection.Open();
myConnection.Close();
But I could not connect. The error message highlights the line myConnection.Open() and displays the error

hi all
I realised this has been done to death, and so much information out there but I am still in a quandry.
I have had to rebuild my computer.
This is what I did
XP machine
using SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition
using Windows Authentication
NZ6(MSSQLSERVER)
straight default install all the way
unfortunately when ready to run reports from my instance(computer)
I received the error as in provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server
thought I had it all okayed but obviously something not right
so ended up unistalling then - did the following:
Load SQL Server from disc1 and start install
failed on alter Counter Registry key error
fixed this from KB article (known error that can happen)
restarted
Went to Windows Update
check IIS is installed - tick is on - IIS - admin tools - make sure asp2 is associated - yes ok
Then back to install sql server - there is no instance set up yet
Disk 2 and setup .exe
All ok on Reporting Services, Analysis etc.
But once again all seems fine but still getting the error:
connection is all fine in Management Studio - eg I can see tables etc
connection is all fine in Business Intelligence - eg I can preview my reports
I then can deploy up to - NZ6
open NZ6
eports
report is there fine - but just errors
some simple little tick that I have not done!!
I seem to have checked and rechecked everything and obviously doing another re-install does not seem a logical step from here.
I will continue to check but if someone jump in and advise please would be great.
cheers

Hello,
Once in a while we receive this error from a script task in an SSIS package that runs from a scheduled job:
Unable to receive files using "FTPConnMngr".
A search on google yielded nothing. Has anyone encountered this error, and/or what are some possible causes?
Thank you

I have the following query
SELECT [KPI].*
FROM
OPENQUERY(LINKED_OLAP,'SELECT
HEAD(TAIL(DESCENDANTS
(TAIL([Time].[CalendarMonth].[Year],1), [Time].[CalendarMonth].[Month]),4),3) ON COLUMNS,
([Game].[Game Code].&[1] ,
[Code] ...
The last three columns are dynamically generated because they change during time. Next month they will be different.
I like to introduce aliases for them and to have them in the select as 'TWO_MONTHS_AGO','ONE_MONTH_AGO', 'CURRENT_MONTH'
I wonder if exists something like [KPI].(0), [KPI].(1), and etc.. of the OPENQUERY to get the selected columns by their ordering number...

When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. Here is my con string :
