I don't have any knowledge about SQL Server at all... I wanna know:
1. What is SQL Server?
2. Have SQL Server something to do with databases and Microsoft Access to do?
3. What is the link between Visual C++ Express Edition and SQL Server Express Edition?
4. Where on the web can I learn (tutorials) how to use SQL Server Express Edition?
I am loosing my mind on this one. I select info from a database. I then take that selected info, and select info from another table based on that. Straight forward. The CompanyKey attached to my username is 7 which displays in the ReaderResults.Text. I the following line: selectSQL2 = "SELECT * FROM Company WHERE companyKey = ('" + CompanyKey + "')"
I can change it to:
selectSQL2 = "SELECT * FROM Company_Membership WHERE companyKey = 7 "
and it works. I have no idea what is going on. Dissapearing string? Here is the code: Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load 'Database ConnectionDim con As New SqlConnection("Data Source = .SQLExpress;integrated security=true;attachdbfilename=|DataDirectory|ASPNETDB.mdf;user instance=true") 'Job1 InfoDim currentUserID currentUserID = Context.User.Identity.Name.ToString() Label1.Text = currentUserID Dim selectSQL1 As String selectSQL1 = "SELECT companyKey FROM Company WHERE UserID = ('" + currentUserID + "')"Dim cmd1 As New SqlCommand(selectSQL1, con) Dim reader As SqlDataReaderDim CompanyKey 'Job2 Info Dim selectSQL2 As String selectSQL2 = "SELECT * FROM Company WHERE companyKey = ('" + CompanyKey + "')"Dim cmd2 As New SqlCommand(selectSQL2, con) 'Job1 Select Try con.Open() reader = cmd1.ExecuteReader()Do While reader.Read() CompanyKey = reader("CompanyKey").ToString() Loop reader.Close()Catch err As Exception ReaderError.Text = "Error selecting record." ReaderError.Text &= err.Message Finally ReaderResults.Text = CompanyKey con.Close() End Try 'Job2 Select Try con.Open() reader = cmd2.ExecuteReader() GridView1.DataSource = reader GridView1.DataBind() reader.Close()Catch err As Exception ReaderError.Text = "Error selecting record." ReaderError.Text &= err.Message Finally ReaderResults.Text = CompanyKey con.Close() End Try
Hello everyone... i am new to Structured Query Language. I am learning it for the past 6 months form a book by myself. I don't have a teacher available to me. Now when i have finished that with all of the exercises completed. i want to make sure what i've learned is i've really learned it. the problem is that there is no such organization here that i join and have some hand on practical. So now i am asking u guys to help me. Tell me some way so that i make sure of whatever knowledge i have about SQL.
I do a lot of hiring for my company and a lot of the people I interviewsay that they are experts at SQL queries, but when I give them somethingsimple just beyond the typical SELECT type of queries, they choke. For example I have a table that looks like this:PK_ID - primary keyPARENT_ID - a FK to another row in the same tableThis essentially is a tree structure. I will ask interviewees to writea query that will return all the rows that have 2 direct children. Noone knows how to do this.I don't get it. I have done queries which boggle the mind and they arefar more complex than this.Am I asking too much?--* Don VaillancourtDirector of Software Development**WEB IMPACT INC.*phone: 416-815-2000 ext. 245fax: 416-815-2001email: Join Bytes! <mailto:donv@webimpact.com>web: http://www.web-impact.com/ This email message is intended only for the addressee(s)and contains information that may be confidential and/orcopyright. My company asked me to do a tech interview on a potential contractor for a three month assignment writing SQL Server stored procedures.
I have some things I can ask him to test his qualifications, such as cross-tab query design, UDF usage, running total queries, select first 'N' queries, Primary Keys vs Clustered Indexes, etc...
I was curious what questions other people might ask in order to assess a person's skill. Remember that this is SQL programming only, not admin stuff, and I want to ask questions with a range of difficulty from easy to head-cracker.
I am having a puzzling problem with a DTS package in SQL 2000 that uses a combination of "Execute Process Tasks" and "ActiveX Script Tasks." The issue occurs with one of (the second) the ActiveX Script Task. The script invokes a COM object that was written in C#. This COM object connects to the database and writes a record set and then calls a stored procedure. When I run this step individually, everything works fine. When I run it as part of the package, the record set is being written but the stored procedure is not invoked (SQL Profile confirms this).
I haven't really begun a serious attempt to troubleshoot the problem, though I have played around with the Transactions and OLE DB properties of the DTS Package.
Any suggestions as to why the behavior might be different, or some straightforward tips on troubleshooting would be appreciated. I have access to the COM component source.
I dont know where to put this thread, I just wanna ask a question..actually what is happen when subscription synchronized the publications among IIS process.. (SQLMobile)
Dear Friends, please suggest me the best book to gain sound knowledge in DBA concepts as well as writing in sub queries, complex queries as well as inner queries.
I've been working as a .NET developer for many years. However, my educational background isn't in IT at all, so I occasionally find that there are big gaps in my knowledge when I'm called on to do certain things.
My current role is the first one I've had where the efficiency of my database calls has needed to be top-notch. Most of my previous posts have been in building intranet functionality for medium-sized companies so it's just not been an issue and my fairly basic level of SQL knowledge has been enough to get me by.
However, I'm increasingly finding I'm needing to look stuff up, ask for help and so forth and I'm not at all sure that what I'm putting out is up to scratch. I have three main areas of concern:
1) The developers here seem to like doing a lot of the "work" of data sorting and manipulation in SQL whereas I'd previously have just grabbed the whole table and done the manipulation in .NET. I'm finding building my complex queries is just doing my head in - I'm just not used to "thinking" in the way that SQL requires which seems very different from procedural programming.
2) A lot gets said about properly indexing tables for maximum efficiency. I know what an index is and vaguely what it does, but the means of applying them to ensure the best performance is pretty much beyond me.
3) In the same manner I'm now having to worry a lot more about performance issues in my database design. I now the five normal forms and so on, but is there anything else here I need to do to maximise performance?
What I'm asking, really, is whether anyone can recommend a good source for SQL knowledge (book, site, whatever) that specifically focuses on my first problem - it'll teach me the proper way to structure my queries and think about them properly so that they don't look so damn impenetrable. It then needs to go on and address my other issues.
Greetings,I have to admit that I'm still a beginner in the database field, but I'mactively studying, and this is why I will be utterly grateful for theproper, accurate, and wise guidance to the right direction or specificpaths of database studies.I simply want to make my first major database project a "personalknowledge database" or a "personal encyclopedia", so to speak. By this Imean that I want to gather diverse, multi-format bits of knowledge intoa single database divided into major categories, sub-categories, and soon. For example, I want to scan collected articles from newspapers &magazine and save them as images, type hand-written notes into thecomputer and save them as MS Word or Text files, save audio files withsearchable keywords, even save searchable MS OneNote audio & text files, all into directories & sub-directories. Then I want to be able to searchall these files for specific words or subjects; sort them according todate, subject, etc; update, add to or append, edit, or even cut & paste(within) any of those records in the database, which rely on easilycustomizable formats like text & images (in contrast with audio files orOneNote files, for example).I also want to prevent wasting time in the future, by avoidingrepetitive, same-keywords typing for every non-text new entry, like animage or audio file, by having a customizable keyword list open (byright clicking for example), where one could mark all the relevantkeywords for the picture or audio file. Also have a short descriptionfor each one of those entries when needed. And I want to be able to addslick, good-looking graphics to the interface of the database and theforms of the records.Basically, my priorities include: saving time filling the database withknowledge, quickly & accurately finding the future targets of anysearch, presenting the search results in a highly comprehensible &organized form, and a good looking interface & forms for every entry, which are pleasing to the eye and encouraging to study.I already use graphics applications for the "looks" part. So my questionis: what are the technologies or applications that I should learn byheart and use in order to design such a database in the best way? WouldMS Access alone do it all for me? Or should I learn other technologies?I'll be grateful for anyone taking the time to help. Thanks.Sincerely,Yasso"Claiming that God does not exist because there are people suffering anddying is like saying that barbers do not exist because there are peoplewith long hair! Hello, I've been trying for a couple of days now with the following problem in SQL Ive a table called tblRresults that has the following Date - just a regular date OfficeLocation - just a unique id such as a zip code SampleType - contains things like wall, floor, beam SampleResult - "Detected" or "NotDetected" When populated the table can look like 12/12/05 99505 Wall Detected 12/12/05 99505 Wall NotDetected 10/04/05 99211 Beam Detected 10/04/05 99211 Beam Detected 10/04/05 99111 Floor NotDetected 10/04/05 99111 Floor NotDetected What I want is (I guess) a crosstab query that produces the following Date Location SampleType CountDetected CountNotDetected 12/12/05 99505 Wall 1 1 10/04/05 99211 Beam 2 0 (or null would be ok) 10/04/05 99111 Floor 0 2 Any help gratefully accepted, this has been driving me mental! thanks
What is the Difference between the SQL Server Express Bundled with C#/VB VS the downloadable SQL Server Express SP1 with advanced Services?
I installed C# with SQL Server Express, however I wanted to add the Full Text Searching and the SQL Server Management Studio Express, so I downloaded and installed the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP1. When I installed it over top of my current installation, it complained of version mismatching, and then C# failed to recognize that I had SQL 2005 Express installed at all.
What I'd like to know is, which version is more current (they have to be different, they had different version numbers, one was 9.xx.xxxx the other was 2005.9.xx.xxxx) The one bundled with C#, or the SP1 downloadable one.
Firstly, I want to be up todate as far as security patches, and Secondly, how do I add the full text searching and SSMSE to the one bundled with C# without breaking it.
Q1: Does Sql Server 2005 Express support Web/Internet to other SQL Server 2005 Express Clients or does it have to Synch across the internet to a fully installed setup SQL Server 2005 with IIS?
Q2: Does SQL Server 2005 Express support Direct Replication between other SQL Server 2005 Express clients?
I downloaded the SSEUtilSetup.EXE and extracted the SSEUtil.exe to a folder of C:drive of my PC that is Windows XP Pro. I plan to learn the CLR programming via user-instance of SQL Server Express. I need to have SQL Server Express Utility installed. Please help and tell me how I can install SSEUtil.exe in my PC and how I use it to interact with SQL Server Express.
1, I have installed VWD express, sql server 2005 express.I also install management studio and adventureswork db.In the management studio I can able to connect and view adventurework db.But I can't manage to make a connection string to my db server when connecting to management studio server name is "KAMRANSHAHIDSQLEXPRESS".I wants a connection string with respect to this server.2,Is there new database for pubs and northwind for sql server 2005.Or they are of old sql server 2000.I have installed sample databases but can't find script for pubs and northwind nor it install automatically.I wan't to use tutorial's sample.
I'm a newbie and I have a problem that i can't solve despite sitting here all day trying to wortk it out.
I have installed SQL Server Express 2005 along with the associated toolkit. Previous to that i installed MS Visulal studio 2005, .NET 2.0 and MSDN.
The problemn is that it appears despite installing everything i don't have SQLExpress services running on my PC. I have admin rights, it installed okay but there is nothing to connect to.
When i run "sqlcmd.exe -s (local)SQLExpress -E" from the command prompt i get the following message:
HResult 0x2, Level 16, State 1 Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2]. Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : An error has occurred while establi shing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failu re may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.. Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : Login timeout expired.
When i run SQL Server Configuration there is no "SQLExpress" service present under "SQL Server 2005 Servcies" in SQL Server Configuration dialog; just a message saying:
"there are no items to show in this view"
When i run Surface Area Configuration i get the following message:
TITLE: Surface Area Configuration ------------------------------
No SQL Server 2005 components were found on the specified computer. Either no components are installed, or you are not an administrator on this computer. (SQLSAC)
------------------------------ BUTTONS:
OK ------------------------------
If you can shed any light on this id be extreamly grateful as i'd been here for hours before stumbling across the toolkit (why this wasn't bundled i don't know) only to realise once i had it that the SQLExpress service isn't running :(
When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data. Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing). When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server. Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine? Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?
The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.
In my SQL Server Express (that is installed in my Windows XP Pro PC), SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration has Protocols for SQLEXPRESS. I tried to do "Enabling CLR Integration" in my SQL Server Express: (1) If I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections", I got an error "An exception occurred in SMO while trying to manage a service, (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) Additional information: Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoEnum) The operation could not be completed. (WinMgmt). (2) If I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Features, I got a different error "Computer localhost does not exist on the network, or the computer cannot be configured remotely. Verify that the remote computer has the required computer has the required Windows Management Instrumentation components and then try again. (SQLSAC) Additional Information: An exception occurred in SMO while trying to manage a service. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo). Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoEnum) The operation could not be completed. (WinMgmt). Please help and tell me how I should do to get "Enabling CLR Integration" in my SQL Server Express done and how I can create SQLCLR Project in VB 2005 Express.
I have SQL Server Express and VB 2005 Express installed in a Microsoft Windows XP Pro PC that is a terminal PC in our office Network. My Network Administrator has granted my terminal PC for Administrator Use. I tried to do the ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 programming in my terminal PC and I could not get a remote connection in the Window Form Application via Window Authorization. I do not know how to make this kind of remote connection in my Network. Please help and advise.
For the first time, I want to set up the configuration of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to allow me in doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area": (1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the following: Select Computer The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer. Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer O Remote computer Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option? (2) Below the "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]", I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connections", Select a component and then configure its services and connections: |-| SQLEXPRESS |-| Database Engine Service I picked => Remote Connection On the right-hand side, there are: O Local connections only O Local and remorte connections O Using TCP/IP O Using named pipes only O Using both TCP/IP and named pipes Should I choose O Local and remorte connections and O Using named pipes only?
Please help and tell me what options I should choose in (1) and (2).
hii download free starter kit timetraker application( i downloaded both Visual web devaloper and sql server express from the Internet) when i tried to run it it is showing the following errorAn error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)plz give me the solution above error thanks in advance vittal
I am a newbie so i apologies beforehand for any mistakes i make on this forum. Anyway, i created an asp.net website using the MS Visual Web developer tool. This has a couple of SQL SERVER databases within it. I then latervinstalled the SQL SERVER management studio express in order to manage the SQL SERVER DBs that i had as part of my website but they do not appear within the management studio db list. As this is the express version, is there anyway of importing the existing SQL SERVER dbs that i have to the management studio so i can manage them from there?
Everything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server.
I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah.
Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that?
As I said in the subject I've a problem trying to restore a backup of a previous db created in sql 2000 server
When I try to do it I recive the following message:

In my office computer network system (LAN), my Windows XP Pro PC has SQL Server Express and VB 2005 Express installed and I was granted to have the Administrator priviledge to access SQL Server Express. I tried to create a SQLCLR project in my terminal PC. 1) I tried to set up a remote connection to SQL Server Express in the following way: SQL Server EXpress => SQL Server Surface Area Configuration. In the Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connection - local, I clicked on Remote Connection of Database Engine, SQLEXPRESS and I had a "dot" on "Local and remote connections" and "Using TCP/IP only". Then I clicked on "Apply" and "OK" buttons. Then I went to restart my database engine in SQL Server Management. When I went to check SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration, I saw the arrow is pointing to "Service", not to "Remote Connections"!!!??? Is it right/normal? Please comment on this matter and tell me how I can have "Remote Connecton" on after I selected it.
2) After I restarted the database engine (I guess!!), I executed the following project code (copied from a book) in my VB 2005 Express:

I am a new Microsoft VS.NET Express user to do the SQL Server 2005 Express and VB 2005 Express programming by using the example of a tutorial book. Please help and tell me what is wrong in my SQLCLR sep-up and project coding and how to correct the problems.
Downloading and installing VS 2008 Express also created a Miscrosoft SQL Server folder. How do I install the SQL Server 2005 Express? The following is what I found from the HELP menu bar of the VS 2008 Express. Where can I find the sqlexpr.exe? TIA,Jeffrey
To install SQL Server Express To begin installation, double-click sqlexpr.exe. Note: SQL Server Express is available as a self-extracting executable file (sqlexpr.exe) from both the Visual Studio 2005 CD and the SQL Server Express Web site. SQLEXPR.EXE installs on x86-based computers and to the 32-bit subsystem (WOW64). For more information, see Hardware and Software Requirements (SQL Server Express)
I've seen the following error posted when people try to connect to their server via their applications but didn't see anyone having problems when trying to connect with SQL Server Management Studio Express.
