Large Value Data Type(bcp)

I want to store some binary things(pic and so on), so I create a table which contain a a "varbinary" data-type column.
but 1. I used OPENROWSET to insert the large file in this table. 2. I used master..xp_cmdshell to retrieve data out as a file. One strange thing happened: the size of the input and output is really different(output is 1k bigger than the input file).
and it seems that the file is broken with different file format......
I really don't know why....
Any help would be appriciated.....

I need to update a large table, about 55 million rows, without filling the transaction log, in the shortest time as possible. The goal is to alter the table and change the data type for Text column from VARCHAR(7900) to NVARCHAR(MAX).
Since I cannot do it with an ALTER TABLE statement (it would fill up the transaction log) I'm thinking to:
- rename column Text in Text_OLD
- add Text column of type NVARCHAR(MAX)
- copy values in batches from Text_OLD to Text
The table is defined like:

pID INTEGER NOT NULL,
cID INTEGER NOT NULL,

I've thought about a stored procedure doing this but how to copy values in batch from Text_OLD to Text.
The code I would start with (doing just this part) is the following, but maybe there are more efficient ways to do it, or at least there's a better way to select @startSeq in the WHILE loop (avoiding to select a bunch of 100000 sequences and later selecting the max).

After testing out the application i write on the local pc. I deploy it to the webserver to test it out. I get this error.
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: The conversion of a char data type to a
datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value.
Notes: all pages that have this error either has a repeater or datagrid which load data when page loading.
At first I thought the problem is with the date, but then I can see
that some other pages that has datagrid ( that has a date field) work
just fine.
anyone having this problem before?? hopefully you guys can help.

We are constrained to use a model that stores records in a main table and various attributes of the record in a second table. Something like this: main record table CAR, attribute table CAR_DETAILS with CAR_DETAILS have key value pairs like "color" "blue" and "doors" "4".
For reports we need to flatten the one to many nature of this to get CAR and color and doors by using an aggregate function like:Â
car_id, max(car_detail.value) filtered on car_detail.key = "color", max(car_detail.value) filtered on car_detail.key = "doors".Â
This works on other tables but the car_detail table (shall we say) appears to store its values as blobs. In any case when we attempt to aggregate we get "The query uses an aggregate function on a large value type expression. Large value type expressions can not be aggregated."
Since we can't change the model, we would need to use another function to change this to a smaller string (or date, these are actually mostly date), but none of the very limited set of functions available seems to work to make this aggregation possible (and there is no "first" or anything else similar).Â

Hi,
I can populate a dataTable with type double (C#) of say '1055.01' however when I save these to the CE3.5 database using a float(CE3.5) I lose the decimal portion. The 'offending' code is:

This did not happen with VS2005/CE3.01.
I have tried changing all references to decimal (or money in CE3.5) without luck.
I'm beginning to think that string may be the way to go!!!!!!!

It's necessary to update the datatable adapter as the 3.01 and 3.5 CE are not compatible.

We have some columns in a table where the date is stored as 19980101 (YYYYMMDD). The data type for this column is NUMBER(8) in Oracle.
I need to copy rows from Oracle to SQL Server using SSIS. I used the Data Conversion transformation editor to change it to DT_DATE, but the rows are not being inserted to the destination.
On Error, If I fail the component, then the error is :
There was an error with input column "ORDER_DATE_CONV" (1191) on input "OLE DB Destination Input" (29). The column status returned was: "Conversion failed because the data value overflowed the specified type.".

hello all .. I have a form that includes two textboxes (Date and Version) .. I have a field that is currently stored as the data type nvarchar(10), and all of the data in this field is in the format mm/dd/yyyy or NULL. I want to convert this field to the smalldatetime data type. Is this possible?
I've tried to use cast in the following way, (rsbirthday is the field name, panelists is the table), but to no avail.
SELECT rsbirthday CAST(rsbirthday AS smalldatetime)
FROM panelists
the error returned is "incorrect syntax near 'rsbirthday'.
I'm rather new to all things SQL, so I only have the vaguest idea of what I'm actually doing.

I am trying to use the Bulk Insert Task to load from a csv file. My final column is a bit that is nullable. My file is an ID column that is int, a date column that is mm/dd/yyy, then 20 columns that are real, and a final column that is bit. I've tried various combinations of codepage and datafiletype on my task component. When I have RAW with Char, I get the error included below. If I change to RAW/Native or codepage 1252, I don't have an issue with the bit; however, errors start generating on the ID and date columns.
I have tried various data type settings on my flat file connection, too. I have tried DT_BOOL and the integer datatypes. Nothing seems to work.
I hope someone can help me work through this.

I am using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Express 2005. The database was converted from MS Access 2003 to SQL Express by using the upsize wizard.
I would like to store the current date & time in a column in a table. This column is a smalldatetime column called 'lastlogin'.
The code I'm using is:

This code works fine on my local machine and local SQL server. However at the client side this code results in the error as mentioned in the subject of this thread. I first used 'datetime.now' instead of 'getdate()', but that caused the same error. Then I changed the code to 'getdate()', but the error still remains.
The server at the client is running Windows Server 2000 UK . My local machiine is running WIndows XP Dutch.
Maybe the conversion from Dutch to UK has something to do with it. But this should be solved by using the 'Getdate()' function..... ?

I'm trying to use the SSIS Execute SQL Task to pull XML from a SQL 2005 database table. The SQL is of the following form:

For some reason I can only get this query to work if I use an ADO.NET connection type. If I try to use something like the OLEDB connection I get the following error:

Can anyone tell me why the SELECT ... FOR XML PATH... seems only to work with ADO.NET connections?

I am studying indexes and keys. I have a table that has a fixed width of data to be loaded in the first column which is parsed in a view based on data types within the fixed width specifications.
Example column A:
(name phone house cost of house,zipcodecountystatecountry)
-a view will later split this large varchar string basedÂ
column b: is the source filename of the data load (varchar 256)
....
a. would there be a benefit of adding a clustered or nonclustered index (if so which/point in direction on why)
b. is there benefit of making one of these two columns a primary key (millions of records) or for adding a 3rd new column as a pk?
c. view: this parses the data in column a so it ends up looking more like "name phone house cost of house zipcode county state country" each having their own column.
-any pros/cons of adding indexes (if so which) to the view instead of the tables or both for once the data is parsed?

I get the following message in the vs2005 querybuilder when i do a preview:

Can anybody tell me why this is?

hello guyshere is my problem:i am developing a asp.net web app in .net 2.0. i have some sensitive data in my database. which is encrypted using DES ( with some key which is only known by the top level authorities ). now there is an option of changing the secret key. on changing the key the sensitive data has to decrypted using the old key and then again encrypted using the new key. Now if the no of records increases i am afraid that it might take a longer time and the application might look as it got hanged. guys i have no clue on how to do this. if you guys have any idea on how to implement this please let me know. any help would be appreciatedVignesh

I'm currently trying to retrieve results from a large dataset, there are over 45000 records and I need to use them all to peform counts etc. I have set up views, but my page is still being returned slowly, is there anything I can do to speed this up?

I was wondering if anyone can help me.
I am trying to import data into SQL Server 7. The table will be 700-800 columns, and the data will be about 150,000 records at a time.
The data source is flat file.
First I create the table using a database schema, and secondly I would like to populate the table.
The problem is that most of the data is numeric, and to be used for statistical analysis.
So far I have tried Bulk Insert, bcp, and dts.
DTS is the only method that has worked in any way, shape or form, but that requires importing each column as a Varchar. Importing to my pre-created table doesn't work, because it is interpreting some of the source columns as character data and refusing to insert them into an int field.
Bulk Insert and bcp both give error messages, and I am wondering if that is because of the size of the insert statement that is required to handle so many fields.
For the moment I am just trying to import the data in any way, but eventually, it will have to be run as an automated process, with the table structure probably needing to be altered as well.
Any help/suggestions would be very greatfully received.

when to use table variable and temp table. i told the interviewer that when rows is less like hundreds or thousand then use table variable else use temp table.After that he asked that what do u mean by less data or thousand rows may be there are multiple columns involved with that less rows and make a huge data set.

I have a database that is 70GB big. One of the tables has over 350million rows of data. I need to delete about 1/3 of the data in thatone table.I was going to use a simple delete command to delete the unnessacaydata.Something likeDelete from tablename where columname > '100'However, it takes SOOO LONG to run, over 8 hours, if not longer....What is the best way to delete this data???One idea was to create a Temp Table, then move the needed data to thetemp table, then Truncate the Table, and move that data back.I'm not very good with SQL Query Language, so can somone give me anexample on how to do this?? HiI have a SQL2000 server with 128m rows of data. I want to delete about65m of that. So far I have bcp'ed the relevent data out and put theminto another SQL database.We have a small amount of space for our transaction log so I cannotdelete all 65m rows in one go. So far I have been doing them is 0.5mchuncks, but it is extremly slow.Would a faster way be to bcp the data I wan to keep and truncate thetable and bulk import them in again ?What hapnes to log size in when builk import is happening and is thereanother way of doing this ?Thanks for any help

How do I input a large text page (notepad) into a SQL column. Or assign a pointer to the data. I've tried to use BOL (writetext) and to no avail, I guess I'm missing something. I'm just using EM and Query analyzer. I thought this should be easy. Image data should work the same way.

The purchased-application mssql 6.5, sp 4 that I am working on has one large table has 13m illion. It the largest table considering thenextlatgest table is only1.75 million rows.
Thew vnedor has made a change to this largest table in recommending changing a data type -- char to varchar. To make this change easier to do,
I want to "archive" older data not necessary for the current year or current processing to another table.
What is the best way to do this archiving?

Hi all,
I have a table which basically stores multiple users' responses to a questionnaire. I want to calculate certain statistics on this data (for example: how many users selected a specific answer to a question). If there are many questions and possible answers, then this can get really inefficient. I was wondering what would be the best way to go about doing this.
Currently, I was thinking of using what I believe are called crosstabs:
