Finding Position Of Character Within A String

Aug 25, 2000

Hi,
I've got a situation where a table column is composed of decimal numbersthat have to be converted to whole numbers. I want to use CEILING and FLOOR functions to round them up or down, but how do I extract the part after the decimal point to evaluate which operation to apply? I don't think there is a function in sql server that looks for a position of a character within a string. I tried INSTR (the vb function) and that gave me an error msg.

Thanks

Finding The Character Position Of Nth Occurence In A String.

Jun 15, 2001

Hi Friends:

I usually run this query in Oracle to find out the position of a character in a string from first position to the nth occurence.

For example, I run the following queries in oracle to get the desire result.

SQL> select instr('DADADAQQQA','A',1,1) FROM DUAL;

INSTR('DADADAQQQA','A',1,1) -- First occurence of 'A' from start.
---------------------------
2

SQL> select instr('DADADAQQQA','A',1,2) FROM DUAL;

INSTR('DADADAQQQA','A',1,2) -- Second occurence of 'A' from start.
---------------------------
4

SQL> select instr('DADADAQQQA','A',1,3) FROM DUAL;

INSTR('DADADAQQQA','A',1,3) -- Third occurence of 'A' from start.
---------------------------
6

SQL> select instr('DADADAQQQA','A',1,4) FROM DUAL;

INSTR('DADADAQQQA','A',1,4) -- Forth occurence of 'A' from start.
---------------------------
10

Is there ay equivelant way in Transact- SQL? If not, can anybody suggest the solution?

Using An Expression To Set The Position Of A Subreport.

May 2, 2008

Dear all,

I feel I am almost there with my current project but I am just trying to solve the last few problems here.

I was not able to have a columnized sub report within my main non columnized report as all sub reports inherit the layout of the main page (a known limitation).

However, I need to get some data into columns on my main page so I have had to hack around the issue to get the desired results.

Instead of creating one columnized subreport (which wont work in the main page) I have added two non-columnized sub reports to the main page listing the first half of the data in one subreport and the 2nd half of the data in the other subreport.

The problem is this. I need to put a total at the end of the data. And it depends how much data there is as to where the total should be (left column or right column) If there are only 10 lines of data then the first left hand sub report will display those results and the right hand sub report wont display anything. However, if there are 100 lines returned then both sub reports will display data and the total will need to be at the bottom of the right sub report.

Can I achieve this with an IIF statement? Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Can Import TXT File By String Start / End Position

May 23, 2012

I'm trying to import a large .txt file into SQL but a regular bulk insert will not do as there are no delimiters. Each line contains roughly 1080 bytes of data that are scrunched together. (1 byte - represents one character) The only thing I know for sure is the start and end position for each column entry which is fixed-format. For example:

col1 (1,3)
col2 (4,6)
col3 (7,7)
col4 (8,30)
col5 (31,39)
...
colN (1050, 1080)

This occurs for X,XXX,XXX rows. So for each row, I want to pull in the column info based on the string position of the data.

How can I do this in SQL? All I have found so far is bulk insert entry...

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Start Position Of Number Value In A String

May 2, 2014

In t-sql 2008 r2, I would like to know how to select a specific string in a varchar(50) field. The field in question is called 'CalendarId'.

This field can contain values like:

xxIN187 13-14 W Elem
HS321 13-14 D Elem
IN636 13-14 C Elem
030 13-14 clark middle.

What I am looking for is the first position that contains a number value for the length of 3. Thus what I want are values that look like the following: 030, 636, 187.What I know that I want is substring(CalendarId,?,3).The question mark is where I want the starting location of a number value (0 to 9) of the value in CalendarId . I tried pathindex but my syntax did not work.

Separate String For Each Row By & Character

Oct 13, 2015

I simply need to separate the string for each row by the & character and then I'm assuming i ll be able to COUNT and GROUP BY the occurrences of each separate value in order to find the most commonly used inputs.I have a column Variables in the table Functions, that contains a string of values separated by the & character that shows the inputs each student inserted into a function.

How would I go about splitting that string without the use of a function or stored procedure and the find the most commonly used variables? (I was thinking the latter part could be easily solved with a COUNT(*) and appropriate GROUP BY.)

Example of data:

StudentID FunctionName Variables

Strange Character At End Of String

Nov 20, 2007

Hello,
In an SSIS package, I am attempting to copy data from a source where I am using the .NET provider for ODBC. The destination is a SQL Server 2005 table, and the connection uses the OLE DB provider for SQL Server.

On occasion, the data in a column called ADDR1 can contain a character at the end of the string that comes across in appearance as a box (when observed from a UTF-8 encoded text file). When this occurs, the record makes its way to the error output. I've tried using RTRIM and TRIM, and a couple of things with REPLACE in a Derived Column transform, but I can't seem to eliminate this extra character.

If I don't configure the error output, then the package fails on a truncation error on the ADDR1 column. The error output shows that the physical number of characters in the string never excedes the allowable character length (30).

Any suggestions?

Thank you for your help!

Converting Datetime From Character String

Jun 28, 2004

Hi there,

I have the following code:

Dim CityTown As String = Ctype(Request.Querystring("CityTown"), String)
Dim Suburb As String = Ctype(Request.Querystring("Suburb"), String)
Dim SuburbValue As String = Ctype(Request.Querystring("Suburb"), String)
Dim Rooms As String = Ctype(Request.Querystring("Rooms"), String)
Dim Rent As String = Ctype(Request.Querystring("Rent"), String)

Dim DateToday = DateTime.Now
Dim mySQL AS String
If suburbValue = "- All -" Then
mySQL = "SELECT propListID, propListExpires, propBuildType, propRoomNumber, propRentPerWeek, propDescription, propCityTown, propSuburb FROM tblPropertyList WHERE [propCityTown]='" & CityTown & "' AND [propRentPerWeek]<= '" & Rent & "' AND [propRoomNumber]='" & Rooms & "'AND [propListExpires] >='" & DateToday & "' "

However I am having trouble getting the Date to work as part of my SQL String. I keep getting the following error:

Syntax error converting datetime from character string.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Syntax error converting datetime from character string.

Source Error:

Line 30: MyDA = New SqlDataAdapter (mySQL, myConn)
Line 31: myDS = New DataSet()
Line 32: myDA.Fill(MyDS)
Line 33:
Line 34: dlPropertyListing.Datasource = MyDS.Tables(0)

Source File: K:detailsdetailspropertylisting.aspx Line: 32

Any ideas how to resolve this?? I do not want to use Parameters in my statement.

Thanks in advance,

TCM

Converting Datetime From Character String

Dec 2, 2004

Can anyone tell me what this error message means and how I can correct it on my statement:
Code:

Server: Msg 241, Level 16, State 1, Line 1Syntax error converting datetime from character string.

Here's my query statement:
Code:

SELECT animalid AS "Animal ID", name AS "Name", categoryid AS "Category ID", DATENAME(MONTH, dateBorn) + ' ' + DATENAME(DAY, dateBorn) + ', ' + DATENAME(YEAR, dateBorn) AS "Date of Birth"FROM animalWHERE categoryid = 'Cat' AND dateBorn = 'May%'

I know it has something to do with: dateBorn = 'May%' because when I took out Quote: AND dateBorn = 'May%' I get results, but I need to narrow it down to list the cats born in May.

Adding A Leading Character To A String

Jan 27, 2006

I'm looking for a string function (or any other quick way) for adding a leading zero to make a string two characters long. For example, if the input is '12' the result will be '12' but if the input is '1', the result will be '01'.

It's actually about making a month number two characters long but I've understood there is no way to make Datediff() to fix it for me.

I thought there might be a string function for this, like there is in many programming languages, but I can't find anything in BOL. I want to keep it simple, because it will be used in a Select and a Group By for aggregating data based on time intervals (year + month).

And, I assume I can't make Datepart() to return year + month directly, only one of the parts at a time.
