Limit Recordset To X Number Of Records
Nov 14, 2000How do you limit the number of records returned in a recordset? I only want the 10 most recent and I've got a Date column in my database.

View 1 RepliesI am using SQL Server 2008 as a back end for a Microsoft Access front end. I have created a report that is essentially a Bill Of Lading. The detail section lists all the purchase orders that are being shipped on a single load. The problem with the Access Report is that I always need a set number of records (8) so that the layout is consistent. So, if the query returns 5 records, I need an additional 3 blank records returned with the recordset. If there are 2 records, I need an additional 6, and so on. For simplicity sake the query is:
SELECT tblBOL.PONumber FROM tblBOL WHERE tblBOL.BOLNumber=@BOLNumber;Now, I can get the results I want by using a union query for the "extra" records.
For instance, if there are 6 records returned for BOLNumber '12345', I can get the expected results by this query:
SELECT tblBOL.PONumber FROM tblBOL WHERE tblBOL.BOLNumber='12345'
UNION ALL SELECT '12345',Null
UNION ALL SELECT '12345',Null;
Another solution would be to create a temporary table with the "extra" records and then have only one Union statement. Not sure which is better, but I'm not really sure how to programmatically do either of these. I'm guessing I need to do it in a stored procedure. How do I programmatically create these extra records? One other note.... If there are more than 8 records, I need to return 8 of these "blank" records and none of the real records (hard to explain the reason behind this, but it has to do with the report being only a summary when there are more than 8 records while the actual records will go on a different supplemental report).
is there a limitations of number of records that shows in the table when you use show data table?
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn my ASP page, when I select an option from the drop down list, it has to get the records from the database stored procedure. There are around 60,000 records to be fetched. It throws an exception when I select this option. I think the application times out due to the large number of records. Could some tell me how to limit the number of rows to be returned to avoid this problem. Thanks.
Query
SELECT @SQLTier1Select = 'SELECT * FROM dbo.UDV_Tier1Accounts WHERE CUSTOMER IN (SELECT CUSTOMERNUMBER FROM dbo.UDF_GetUsersCustomers(' + CAST(@UserID AS VARCHAR(4)) + '))' + @Criteria + ' AND (number IN (SELECT DISTINCT ph1.number FROM Collect2000.dbo.payhistory ph1 LEFT JOIN Collect2000.dbo.payhistory ph2 ON ph1.UID = ph2.ReverseOfUID WHERE (((ph1.batchtype = ''PU'') OR (ph1.batchtype = ''PC'')) AND ph2.ReverseOfUID IS NULL)) OR code IN (SELECT DISTINCT StatusID FROM tbl_APR_Statuses WHERE SearchCategoryPaidPaymentsT1 = 1))'
Hey Everyone, I have what seems to be a unique problem, which I am not sure if it is an ASP problem or an SQL Server issue. I'm making a website that pulls its content from ntext fields within SQL Server 2000. Heres my problem, when I pull the data into the page it cuts off the text from the field at a certain spot. I pulled the data into a variable and did some tests on it, if I run length on it I get 1023 and also if I run length on just the recordset field I also get 1023. But if I check the SIZE of the recordset I get a return of 2046. I have had this problem before with an Access database as well but it seems as if the amount of characters that it cut off at with the access database was in the 200's. I've self taught myself ASP so this could very easily be something I have missed. Same for both Access and SQL Server.
View 4 Replies View RelatedHi all,
I have recently moved over from SQL Server 2000 to 2005 and am now having an issue with my application with what appears to be, the number of recordsets that I can open/close on a single connection.
Here is a snippet of what I'm doing, in VB 2005 using ADO... (assuming the connection is already open and working)
Dim RS1 As RecordSet.
DIM RS2 As RecordSet
RS1.Open("SELECT...")
Do While Not RS1.EOF
count = count + 1
Console.Writeline(count)
RS2.Open("SELECT...")
..some processing...
RS2.Close
Loop
RS2 = Nothing
RS1.Close
RS1 = Nothing
Now as I said this all works fine when I connect to an SQL 2000 server but on SQL 2005 it bombs out when 'count' is approximately 1940 with an exception saying that the login failed. If I have Server Management Studio open, that connection will then freeze and throw up an error about how only one usage of each socket address is normally permitted - I think thats more a red herring though.
Any ideas? I've been through all the server settings and can not seem to find anything about recordset limits or timeouts. The only way I've been able to get around this problem at present is to open a new connection object for each iteration to be used by RS2.
Thanks everyone. Any pointers would be much appreciated.
I am using ADODB.Recordset to retrieve the records from an MS Access database. The table has 11450 records and the recordset shows this number as the recordcount too. But when I try to fetch the records in a While loop using EOF as the check, I am able fetch only 4000 or so records. No error occurs and no exception is thrown. Control just comes out of the function. Why could this be happening?

Is this possible and in that case how?

View 1 Replies View RelatedIn other SQL programs I have seen the use of Limit to tell it how many rows to return.
Is there an equivalent in MS-SQL that will let me do a quick Select clause and tell it how many rows to return.

Hi,
Here's my problem.
I have an Area Chart, and I need to plot more than 300,000 records. Problem is RS cannot seem to handle this huge dataset. It would retrieve for 20mins, then after that it will just have an error "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". I am not encountering this if I just have a few records to plot. Please help

HI all !
I am having a bit of a problem trying to limit a number of columns in a matrix appearing on a page.
At the moment, I have a dataset that lists the month and the mail packages that were sent during the month
The matrix works great HOWEVER, if there were more than 8 months in the matrix columns, it does not break and would make the page look like a huge landscape page.
I am trying to limit the number of columns appearing (this is the months column) on the matrix so that the pages stay in a potrait position. IE: every 8 columns appear on one page. Is there an option or an expression I could use in the Matrix ?
Thanks!

Is there a limit of how many rows a table can have in SQL compact Edition? I didn't find anything in the documentation, but I get regularly a funny error message "Expression evaluation caused an overflow. [ Name of function (if known) = ]" when I try to create record number 32768 (is equal to 2 to the power of 15).
Where is this limit documented ?

Is there a performance limit on the number of indexes per table / database ? With Filtered indexes there appear to be many more opportunities for more finely defined, and therefore smaller indexes resulting in many more indexes on a single table.

How could I go about doing the following:
I have a column with lets say
AHA1
AHA2
AHA3
AHE1
AHE2
ARL1
ARL2
How could I make a column next to it that is basically the same but cuts off anything after the third letter? So this new column would look like:

AHE
AHE

I apologize if I'm posting this question in the wrong forum.
I have a query that exports data from an Oracle database to an Excel spreadsheet. The application that executes the query is Computer Associates Eureka Report writer. I do not have direct access to the database or any of its objects. With the data in Excel, I run a VBA macro-driven inventory report. The Excel spreadsheet row limitation is not a problem presently, however, the query exports a lot of extraneous data that I don't need. I actually export about a dozen columns of data however I'm only listing 4 in the example below.
Example:
CaseNum ActionDate ActionType ComplCd
1029901 09/08/2006 F 0
1029901 09/11/2006 C 0
1029901 08/18/2006 C 1
1029901 08/17/2006 F 1
1029901 08/01/2006 F 1
When the ComplCd = 1 I only want the query to export one row of data for each CaseNum. Is
there a way to code my query to accomplish this?

Hi,I'm using c# with a tableadapter to call stored procedures. I'm running into a problem where if I have over a certain byte size or number of parameters being passed into my stored proc I get an exception that reads: "Cannot evaluate expression because a thread is stopped at a point where garbage collection is impossible, possibly because the code is optimized." If I remove one parameter, the problem goes away. Has anyone run into this before? Thanks,Mark
