Linked Server W/ Text Field Gets Connection Broken Error
Sep 5, 2006
We have a stored proc on Server B called:
my_sp_server_b it takes 1 parameter a text field as a parameter, with default set to NULL
this proc calls:
my_sp_server_a through a linked server (which happens to be the same server, different DB), it has two parameters: my_id int, my_text text w/ my_text having a default set to NULL
This second stored procedure just selects back an ID that is passed to it (to keep things simple).
If we pass any string value to my_sp_server_b we get the appropriate hardcoded ID passed to my_sp_server_a. If we pass NULL to my_sp_server_b we get the following error:
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionCheckForData (CheckforData()).
Server: Msg 11, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
General network error. Check your network documentation.
Connection Broken
If we remove the linked server, and just reference my_sp_server_a via the scoped DB, we do not get an error. If we change the data type in both procs to varchar(50) we do not get an error. If we change the data type to nText we still get an error. If we put IF logic into stored procedure: my_sp_server_b to check for NULL in the input parameter and if it true then to pass NULL explicitly to my_sp_server_a we do not get an error.
It seems to be a combination of using a linked server and trying to pass a text (or nText variable) with a NULL value to stored procedure. Sometimes the error changes based on which scenario I described above - but we consistantly receive an error unless we do some of the workarounds described above.
I am currently migrating from SQL 7.0 to SQL2005. So far everything is going well except for one thing, my linked server to a Pervasive 8.6 server database. I've done the same configurations as with the SQL 7.0 server to create the linked server. I've created an Pervasive ODBC Client DSN system connection on the server called PervasiveDB pointing to the DataDB catalog, using TCP/IP as transport and the server name "PervasiveDB" as the server address. From this point, on the SQL2005 server, the DSN connection is successfull and I can see the different catalog names of the PervasiveDB server. When I create the Linked server on the SQL2005, I create exactly as done on the SQL7.0 which is :
SQL7.0 server : OS is Windows 2000 all service packs applied for both OS and SQL7.0
SQL2005 server : OS is Windows2003 standard edition all service packs applied for both OS and SQL2005.
Linked server name : TestPervasive
Provider : Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers
Product name: Pervasive
Data source: PervasiveDB
Location: PervasiveDB
Catalog : DataDB
I get the following error when I try to query the data to test if the linked server I just created is successful:
query : SELECT * FROM testpervasive.DataDB..schedule
error message:
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "TestPervasive" reported an error. The provider did not give any information about the error.
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "TestPervasive".
Anybody can help me on this one? I would greatly appreciate it !!
We have a SQL2005 server install running on a Win2003 Server. It has a linked server to iHistorian using the iHOLEDB provider for iHistorian. Randomly and after a few execution to this provider, we start getting errors
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "IhOLEDB.iHistorian" for linked server "fspheafhs1".I created a data source in VS2005 for BI on the SQL server using the iholedb provider. This was successful. However, all queries or OPENQUERY statements to the linked server fail. This seems to continue until SQL Server is restarted. Does anyone know how to reset a provider in SQL Server or tell if the SQL Server is having trouble with the provider? There are no message in the SQL Error Log. Again the provider continues to work outside of SQL Server, but no longer can be accessed from within SQL Server. Thanks in advance.
I upgraded a SQL 2000 installation to SQL 2005 this past weekend. Minimal issues overall, but one that did crop up relates to a linked server to an Oracle database. The linked server worked before the upgrade, and stopped working immediately after.
We're running on Windows 2003 x64, latest service pack. The linked server is set up using the MSDAORA provider. The error I'm getting post-upgrade is:
=====================
OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "PROD" returned message "ORA-06413: Connection not open.".
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Procedure RDM_GET_REP_LIST_SP, Line 12
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "PROD".
=====================
A tnsping from the server works fine. I've also tried recreating the linked server. Any help would be appreciated. Let me know what other information would be useful.
I'm currently having an issue with a linked server. Here's the surrounding information:
A) I have a clustered SQL Server 2005 Instance (A) and a SQL Server 2000 instance (B). B) There is a linked server on A to B. When I set it up, I did run the fix to ensure A could talk to B (There was an issue with communication between 2005 and 2000 servers). It has been there since I installed A, and has worked fine.. Until last week. C) This linked server uses static credentials to connect to B. D) Named Pipes are enabled on both servers to listen to both connections on both A and B in cliconfg. So A has a named pipe listening for B, and B has a named pipe listening for A. E) A has a view that looks at a table on B - It's a table view, very simple, just pulls in all the data from the table on B.
So, I go to do a select statement from the view, connected as a user other then 'sa'. I then get the error:
Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server Linked Server Error Source: ncli Client (Paraphrasing, didn't copy that down, but it was the ODBC connector)
Well, that's odd. It's been working fine for months now..
I then go and connect as sa on A to query B. It works! Mind you, absolutely NO QUERY from A to B will run again until I run SOME kind of query has been run as sa on A.
Mind you, this is not a credential issue. Every user who connects to the linked server to B uses a stored credential that is DBO to the database on B. The same User Name and Password exists on both A and B.
Also of note, I check the activity monitor. There's a process that is "dormant" every time I run a query against the view. The details of this connection are:
sp_reset_connection;1
My question is, why is it resetting the connection on B when being queried from A? Why is it "all of a sudden" a problem? Are there any changes that coudl ahve been made that would cause this?
Any help with this confusing issue would be appreciated.
we have tables with many image columns. We fill these image columns via ODBC and SQLPutData as described in MSDN etc (using SQL_LEN_DATA_AT_EXEC(...), calling SQLParamData and sending the data in chunks of 4096 bytes when receiving SQL_NEED_DATA).
The SQLPutData call fails under the following conditions with sqlstate 08S01
- The database resides on SQL Server 2000 - The driver is SQL Native Client - The table consists e.g. of one Identity column (key column) and nine image columns - The data to be inserted are nine blocks of data with the following byte size:
1: 6781262 2: 119454
3: 269 4: 7611
5: 120054
6: 269
7: 8172
8: 120054
9: 269 The content of the data does not matter, (it happens also if only zero bytes are written), nor does the data origin (file or memory).
All data blocks including no 7 are inserted. If the first chunk of data block 8 should be written with SQLPutData the function fails and the connection is broken. There are errors such as "broken pipe" or "I/O error" depending on the used network protocol.
If data no 7 consists of 8173 bytes instead of 8172 all works again. (Changing the 4096 chunk size length does not help)
Has anybody encountered this or a similar phenomenon?
I've discovered an issue with the text qualifier field in the file connection manager when upgrading a SSIS 2005/2008 package from a 32 bit platform to 64 bit platform runninn SQL Server 2008 R2 10.5.1600.
The package will convert <none> in this field to _x003C_none_x003E and therefore any package using the file connection manager i.e. import/export - common tasks on SSIS! will cause problems either with output data or imported data.
Simply replacing _x003C_none_x003E with <none> fixes the issue but ofcourse there can be many packages affected as a result.
Any existing/impending cumulative update for SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard that will fix the problem?double quote delimiters are converted to _x0022_ which I am assume by replacing with a double quote will fix the problem.
Hi I have a problem, when i do a select records from the production server which is situated in melbourne, around 20,000 records need to be fetched but sunddenly after 13,000 records the connection is broken why is this heppening what is the cause for this how to overcome this pls let me know asap with the evidence thanks venkat
Hi , I am running a process from from my client having TCP/IP sockets connected to WIN NT sql server 7.0. I get a error msg [MICROSOFT][ODBC SQL SERVER DRIVER][TCP/IP SOCKETS]ConnectionCheckForData (null())). Connection Broken .
The same thing happened in other NT SQL server as well, but it is ran o.k if i run from the server itself. Checked Microsoft documents they advised me to use Named Pipes and to check the client and server network utility. Check every detail but still facing same errors. Can anyone provide an solution for this.

I'm having serious problem with SSIS on my development machine.
each time I try to add a new Connection manager i got this error :
TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio ------------------------------ The new connection manager could not be created. ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This happen for any type of Connection Manager, ADO.NET, FILE,SMTP. I've already tried to uninstall SSIS , but nothing change.
Hi! I am running a SELECT query in SQL Server 6.5 and continue to get the following message (error?):
This command did not return data, and it did not return any rows
DB-Library Process Dead - Connection Broken
I'm running it directly from Enterprise Manager on the same box as the database itself. The problem seems to be specific to the query itself as minor changes work fine. There are lots of joins involved - the query joins 3 tables and a view, that view joins 3 tables and a sub-query, and that sub-query joins 2 more tables. Simple queries on the view seem to indicate that the view works fine.
I'm a web/DB developer, but not much of a DBA. Has anyone run into this problem and know what may be causing it? Please let me know if you need to see the code of the query and/or the view. (Will replies be emailed to me automatically? If not, please email to tmenier@ontrack.com.)
I have a stored procedure whose sole purpose is to assign a value to 26 variables using select statements (i.e. select @enroll = (select count(distinct upid)fromPATLOG). Some of the souces are tables and some are views.
After the 26 variables are assigned they are written to a table using a INSERT into Values (@enroll, @tbrconsents,...)
My problem is that when I run the SP I get the message
"This command did not return data, and it did not return any rows" "DB-Library Process Dead - Connection Broken"
and nothing is written to the table. I`m fairly new to SQL programming so I haven`t a clue where to start. The SP has run successfully four times intermittantly but I can`t get it to run consistantly.
In report builder 3.0 I have row groups. I want a total at the end of each row but I want the total to be broken down by 3 columns based on 3 possible values of a field in the dataset. The report expands as the date range entered is increased. I want the total of clinic id + service id + program id + protocol id + appointment date but I want the total column to be broken down by appts that have shown or not shown or canceled. Â
See screenshots below for seeing how I have it configured. Is this possible? I have tried every combination of possibilities but I keep getting the row total in each of the 3 columns comprised of the total column.
and
The results look like:Â
The last Total column displays the entire row count NOT separated by the show, no show, and cancel status'.  I have tried filters and different expressions but keep getting the same output. Is this even possible?
I have a column in a table that has a type TEXT,when I pull the length of a row it returns 88222 but when I select from that column it dows not show all the text in the result set.
I'm importing an Access database to SQL Server 2000. The issue I ran into is pretty frustrating... All Memo fields that get copied over (as Text fields) appear to be fine and visible in SQL Server Enterprise Manager... except when I display them on the web via ASP - everything is blank (no content at all).
I didn't have that problem with Access, so I ruled out the possibility that there's something wrong with the original data.
Is this some sort of an encoding problem that arose during database import? I would appreciate any pointers.
i've a reasonable amount of experience with MS Access and less experience with SQL Server. I've just written an .NET application that uses an SQL Server database. I need to collate lots of data from around the company in the simplest way, that can then be loaded into the SQL Server database.
I decided to collect the info in Excel because that's what most people know best and is the quickest to use. The idea being i could just copy and paste the records directly into the SQL Server database table (in the same format) using the SQL Server Management Studio, for example.
Trouble is, i have a problem with line feed characters. If an Excel cell contains a chunk of text with line breaks (Chr(10) or Chr(13)) then the copy'n'paste doesn't work - only the text up to the first line break is pasted into the SQL Server database cell. The rest is not pasted for some reason.
I've tried with MS Access too, copying and pasting the contents of a memo field into SQL Server database, but with exactly the same problem. I've tried with 'text' or 'varchar' SQL Server database field formats.
Since i've no experience of using different types of databases interacting together, can someone suggest the simplest way of transferring the data without getting this problem with the line feeds? I don't want to spend hours writing scripts/programs when it's just this linefeed problem that is preventing the whole lot just being cut'n'pasted in 5 seconds!
Hi,I need some help. I am getting this error after I complete the asp.net register control and click on the continue button. It crashed when it tries to get it calls this Profile property((string)(this.GetPropertyValue("Address1")));When I look at the stack, it is coming from my ProfileWrapper class which adds user address, city, etc.. from a class which inherits fromSystem.Web.Profile.ProfileBase. From the stack, it is calling the System.Web.Profile and crashed when it tries to open a connection atSystem.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionPool.GetConnection(DbConnection owningObject). I already migrated all aspnet_user, aspnet_roles, etc.. and don't get any connection errors. It is only when I try to get the profile data. This works on my pc, but throws an error on my lunarpage website.Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks,AJAn error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. We have a flat file import proces which imports data from a series of unicode flat files.
The files have text qualifiers and are being imported to a table with the following format: CREATE TABLE [dsa].[OBS]( [Kundenummer] [nvarchar](10) NULL, [Navn] [nvarchar](60) NULL, [Adresse] [nvarchar](50) NULL, [PostnrBynavn] [nvarchar](50) NULL, [Kursusdato] [datetime] NULL, [Varighed] [decimal](18, 2) NULL, [Kursustype] [nvarchar](100) NULL, [Risikokoder] [nvarchar](50) NULL ) ON [PRIMARY]
In one of our files we have two rows that looks like this: "19298529";"THIS IS ROW 1";"ADDRESS 9 -13";"4200 SLAGELSE";"02-05-2006";8.00;"Kombikursus Førstehjælp - Brand 8 lek.";"37" "19448242";"THIS IS ROW 2";"ADDRESS 50";"4140 BORUP";"04-05-2006";4.00;""Fra vil selv - til kan selv". Om børn 1½ - 3 Ã¥r";"22"
Both rows are OK according to the format, but the second row actually contains the text qualifier in one of the qualified fields (""Fra vil selv - til kan selv". Om børn 1½ - 3 Ã¥r"). It's the title of a course with a comment. The proces fails on this file, and wont even redirect the row, as it does on other erroneous rows in other files we import.
We believe this is a valid text, but apparently SSIS doesn't Is this a bug or is this record not allowed? Is there a work around, and why wont SSIS redirect the row?
We believe the reason is that the field before is not text quaified (which is of course specified in the connection manager).

Every now and again, we get a problem whereby an error 41 - Broken Pipe is reported. I can't find any info on this error on Technet, MSDN, etc. Google returns info, but only really affecting solaris, unix, linux, etc.
Anyone ever come across this error before? or know what might cause it? and possible resolutions?

What is the correct way to set a linked server pointing to a DB2 database?
I've been trying for hours with "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers" [MSDASQL] and "IBM OLE DB Provider for DB2" [DB2OLEDB] and I still cant setup a correct connection.
I already have a ODBC connection pointing succesfully to my DB2 database, but I can't make MSSQL to use it.
Should I created the connection using sp_addlinkedserver OR the "new Linked Server" under "linked Servers" on Management Studio?
I have this very big text file (2.5 GB - which of course I am not able to open). This resides on a server which has SQL 2005.
I have created a linked server for this text file on my SQL database, and when I try to query the table, I get an error:
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "txtsrv".
Why am I getting this error? When I make a dummy linked server on my local machine and test the steps it all works OK. but when I go to this server where the file and it's SQL instance is lying, I get this error. Please can someone provide me with some help on this?
Many thanks, ~S
P.S. Here is how I created the linked server (I also have the Schema.ini lying under the same folder):
I have a server with several linked servers. Before I execute sql against any of these linked servers I want to check to make sure the connection is active.
I created a small stored procedure that takes the server name. I am trying to get it to run a simple select statement. If the select statement runs without errors (meaning the linked server is active) I want to return a value for success. If the select statement fails I want to return a value for a failure.
The problem is that I am having trouble with the error. When I shut down the linked server and run the select statement I get the following error returned:
Server: Msg 11, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 General network error. Check your network documentation.
The stored procedure I have only returns this message and does not send the return value that I set. How do I get my procedure to return a failure value instead of the following error above? Is there a better way for me to check for this type of error?
Has anyone had problems using an OLEDB linked server connection to Sybase ASE 12.5? I'm having major performance problems when I use string criteria in the where clause. Queries that return 1 row and execute in less than a second using a native Sybase connection take 40 seconds to run using the linked server OLEDB connection. If I use ints in the where clause performance is almost exactly the same between native and linked connections.
I am trying to establish a OLEDB connection for a db2 server from SSMS adn some one tell me the settings. I haver tried different options but failed. This is my connection string from SSIS "Data Source=DB2W;User ID=myid;Provider=IBMDADB2.1;Persist Security Info=True;"
I gave Linked Server: DB2W Provider: IBM OLEDB provider for DB2 Product name: ??? DataSource: ??? Provider string:??? Location: ???
In my code, I need to update the table on the linked server according to the XML input. A table variable is used to store the value from XML.
But the collation of the linked database doesn't match with the default collation used by the table variable, so the table join fails.
I am thinking about to open the connection to the linked server directly, and use the target database. So the table variable collation should be as same as the target database collation.
Is it possible to open the connection to the linked server in c# ?
What is the connection string for access a database of a linked server in sqlserver
Thanks
I add a linked server (another sqlserver server2) to my sqlserver(server1) , I need make a sqlconnection to the linked server connecting my sqlserver (server1)
