2005 System Tables: Where Are They

Nov 7, 2007

In previous versions we could query the system tables to get metadata.
In SQL 2005 they seem to be hidden. They are there. You can query them, but I can't find them.

Question: Is there any way to see them in SSMS?

Yeah, I know you aren't supposed to, but hey, they are usefull and I like them.

Microsoft has given us a confusing collection of alternatives for finding metadata;
System views, Catalog Views, Dynamic Management Views, Compatibility Views, Information_schema views.

I have tried to organize some thoughts on what these are and here is what I make of them.
If any of this is in error, I would like some corrections.

SYSTEM VIEW - the stuff below and more. Shows system information.
...CATALOG VIEW - is a system view on the system tables
...DYNAMIC MANAGEMENT VIEW - is a system view on system tables and various buffers for current status info.
...COMPATIBILITY VIEW - is a system view which shows ONLY 2000 information. It is there for compatibility.
...INFORMATION_SCHEMA VIEW - each database has it's own set. Holds db-level metadata.

Sql Server 2005 Operating System Compatibility Warning Message In System Configuration Check

Apr 3, 2007

Ok guys, I am trying to install Sql server 2005 on Vista but I am still stuck with this warning message in the System Configuration Check during Sql server 2K5 installation :

SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility (Warning)
Messages
* SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility

* Some components of this edition of SQL Server are not supported on this operating system. For details, see 'Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2005' in Microsoft SQL Server Books Online.

Now, I know I need to install SP2 but how the hell I am going to install SP2 if Sql server 2005 doesn't install any of the components including Sql server Database services, Analysus services, Reporting integration services( only the workstation component is available for installation)?

Any work around for this issue?

P.S.: I didn't install VS.NET 2005 yet, can this solve the problem?

Thanks.

Determining What Are System Objects In Sp_help Or System Tables

Jul 20, 2005

Hi,I have a few things on my databases which seem to be neither true systemobjects or user objects - notably a table called 'dtproperties' (createdby Enterprise manager as I understand, relating to relationship graphingor something) and some stored procs begining with "dt_" (some kind ofsource control stuff, possible visual studio related). These show up whenI use"exec sp_help 'databaseName'"but not in Ent. Mgr. or in Query Analyzer's object browser, and also notin a third party tool I use called AdeptSQL. I am wondering how thosetools know to differentiate between these types of quasi-system objects, and my real user data. (This is for the purpose of a customized schemagenerator I am writing). I'd prefer to determine this info with systemstored procs (ie sp_help, sp_helptex, sp_...etc) but will dip into thesystem tables if needed. Thanks,Dave

This code was generated when I used the create a script to build a table from an existing table.
is there a way to check if a a table contains data or not,
The whole idea is to check if table A contains data, I need to truncate the table, otherwise I do nothing...

SQL Server 2014 :: How To Systematically Manage Big List Of Queries And Tables

Sep 12, 2015

Suppose someone has to work on a lot of different SQL Server Databases which have got a lot of Tables and Queries / Views inside them.

After a period of time, it becomes very difficult to remember exactly what kind of columns are present within a given Table and View.

Any method by which one can keep a systematic list of all the Tables and Views that are present within a SQL Server Database, along with the columns that are present within them.

Are there any Add-on products or services etc. available in making this type of work systematic?

Currently I add comments to each queries inside SQL Server to remind me of what this query is doing, but this method is not great.

List That Shows Which System SPs Are Most Used?

Feb 2, 2013

I had 3 questions regarding system SPs in SQLServer2008:

1. Does "stored procedures are documented in SQL Server Books Online" in System Stored Procedures (Transact-SQL) have a special meaning or it means that these system SPs have documentation while the others don't?

2. Why the system SPs listed in MSDN are less than the actual ones in SQLServer2008?

3. Is there a list that shows which system SPs are most used?

The Variable System::LocaleID Is Already On The Read List.

Sep 17, 2007

I've been getting the error below inconsistently when kicking SSIS packages off from a custom windows service. This same service works fine on our development and integration servers but not on our production servers. When I run the packages manually, it works great. Can someone provide any insight as to what is going on?

Error:

The variable "System::LocaleID" is already on the read list. A variable may only be added once to either the read lock list or the write lock list.

I have tired the soultions found in http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=211081&SiteID=1 and applied the hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918091

SQL Server 2000 To SQL Server 2005 - Any Changes Required To Existing Code, System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection?

Dec 13, 2007

My web project (ASP.NET 2.0 / C#) runs against sql server 2000 and uses the System.Data.SqlClient.using System.Data.SqlClient;
I use System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection and System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand to make the connections to the database and do selects and updates.  Is it correct to continue to use these against SQL Server 2005?  I ask because I made a connection string (outside of .Net) for SqlServer 2005 using the SQL native provider and it had the following - Provider=SQLNCLI.1 and any connection strings I had made (also outside of ASP.NET) fro SQL Server all used Provider=SQLOLEDB.1.  This is why I wondered if there is a different SqlClient in .Net 2.0 for SQL Server 2005?
Cheers

Can SQL Server 2005 Evaluation Be Used To Upgrade A System?

Mar 7, 2006

I have multiple development SQL Servers running Enterprise edition that I want to upgrade for application testing before upgrading our production system. All of the servers meet the hardware and software requirements for SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition. However, when I try to install to use the SQL Server 2005 Evaluation Edition to upgrade the servers in place, I get the blocked upgrade message:
Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2000
Reason: Your upgrade is blocked. For more information about upgrade support, see the "Version and Edition Upgrades" and "Hardware and Software Requirements" topics in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online.
Edition check:
Your upgrade is blocked because of edition upgrade rules. For more information about edition upgrades, see the Version and Edition Upgrades topic in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online.

Can the Evaluation Edition be used to upgrade these servers or do you need the full blown version?

thanks

Help Please - Upgrading To SQL Server 2005 / Setup Of System

Jan 3, 2008

Help please...
We have developed a system for a medium size company in NYC using SQL Server 2000.
We are about to go live and thought it may be a good idea to upgrade first from SQL Server 2000 to 2005.

I believe standard edition would be sufficient but I am not 100% sure... There isn't a whole lot of data but high availability is crucial. I was thinking of a 2-node fail over cluster setup and/or mirroring.
We need only one instance of SQL Server with about 30 client machines accessing the same databases.

Any thoughts/comments as far as:
Standard or Enterprise?
What type of licensing? Support agreement?
What about the best setup for highest availability? (fail over cluster vs. mirroring vs. replication)

Thanks,

Toshu.

I have noticed in the database logs that someone is trying to log

address on a list to access the database. We really only need the local machine
and the office using SQL Express management studio to access the database.

I would appreciate any help sometimes the database runs very
slow and we do not know what is causing this.

We are running server 2003 and SQL Server express.

Unistall Unsuccessful And Can Not See Microsoft SQL Server 2005 In Installed Programs List

Jul 7, 2006

I went through the install of the MS SQL Server 2005 Std Edt only to find that I can not open up the "SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio" since I was missing the exe to run it that should have been located at "C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEdevenv.exe".  Due to this happening it seemed to me that some of the install failed, so I went about trying to uninstall the SQL Server setup.  Within the "Add or Remove Programs" tool I selected the "Microsoft SQL Server 2005" from the list and clicked on the button that said "Remove".  This did not seem to do anything except for remove the "Microsoft SQL Server 2005" selection from that tool selection list.  It went way to quick and did not display any dialogs as it removed the engine.  Also I can still opent the Management Studio and see all the normal stuff and I can query the data within the databases.  The two part question is...

1)  How do I get the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 program relisted in the "Add or Remove Programs" tool's selection list?

2) How do I get the "SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio" installed correctly?

The only warning message I received during the install was in regards to the hardware not being quite up to par with amount of RAM.  I saw no errors within the install tool.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!!!  Please let me know if anything else is needed to answer this question.
