Lots Of Individual Insert Commands Or String Parsing In Sql?

Feb 16, 2007

Wondering what's the preferred method for this.  I've got a scenario that a user is updating some content on a page and I need to update my word catalogs for my search feature.  I have some code currently to filter out words that are too small, make sure there are no duplicates and to count how many occurrences there are of each.  What I'm wondering is, does it make more sense to do a loop in my code to run all the insert commands to place the new words in the database, should I try sticking them together in one string and parse them when they get up there or is there a better method someone can suggest?

T-sql String Parsing

Jul 11, 2006

I have a series of strings (field name FullName) in a table (FullNames) that look like this:

FullNames

--------------

macdonald, ronald

Doe, John

I need to extract the first and last names. Here's my code:

select substring (fullname, 1, patindex( '%,%', fullname)-1) + ' ' +

substring (fullname, patindex( '%,%', fullname)+1, len(fullname) ) from FullNames

I hate having to use patindex twice in the same SELECT. Is there any way around this?

TIA,

SQL String Data Parsing

Sep 16, 2007

<p>
Hi everybody, I was hoping to get some advice something I can't quite get my head around.  I have a SQL db which contains a table with ratings using the AJAX rating control.
When someone rates an object, I need to select the current rating and then use those numbers to;
- calculate the new average
- add new score to total score
- increment number of votes by one.

I thought this can be best achieved using the SELECT statement and then parsing the SELECT string. (is the string comma separated?)
using each array, i'd need to convert this into integers and then do the calculation. and re-upload the data to the ratings table (using the UPDATE statement).

Is this the best way of proceeding?  I have tried initially to write the code using three sql statements. But that would mean to many requests from the server, right?
Below is the conde I have writting already.int myrating;
myrating = Rating1.CurrentRating;string getscore = "SELECT " +
"RatingScore" +"FROM Rating " +
"WHERE ItemID= '" + _ItemID+ "'";string getcount = "SELECT " +
"RatingCount" +"FROM Rating " +
"WHERE ItemID = '" + _ItemID + "'";string getaverage = "SELECT " +
"RatingAverage " +"FROM Rating " +"WHERE ItemID = '" + _ItemID + "'";

int _ratingscore;int _newscore; _ratingscore = int.Parse(getscore);
_newscore = _ratingscore + myrating; //add new rating score to old scoreint _ratingcount;
int _newcount;_ratingcount = int.Parse(getcount);
_newcount = _ratingcount + 1; //increase count by 1int _ratingaverage;
int _newaverage;_ratingaverage = int.Parse(getaverage);
_newaverage = _newscore / _newcount; //calculate new average rating
 otherwise
 otherwise would i be best off to do the following?...
string[] dbRatings = SQLstring.Split(',');
 ??
Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.

Parsing Character String

May 21, 2008

I'm running into a couple of performance issues with regards to the parsing of a text string. We have a function that will take a comma delimited character string, parse out the individual values, and then populate a temp table with those values. The two issues are 1.) the parsing process is VERY slow and 2.) there's a max to how large the string can be - at some point it could easily be 8000 characters or more in length.

Here are the function and the stored procedure wher eit occurs:

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Parsing A String

May 18, 2015

I have a table Alert_Types with these fields :

alert_id,
alert_source,
body,

Now whenever a new alert is registered record goes in table like

alert_id = 1,
alert_source= document_detail_view,
body = Document ID: @document_id
Customer Name: @customer_name
Item name: @item_name
Quantity: @qty

it was simple to parse simple variables using replace functions. eg. REPLACE(@str, '@customer_name', @customer_name). It worked like mail merge.the converted string was then sent forward using a webservice.now my requirement is to add conditional values in body field e.g:

body = Document ID: @document_id
Customer Name: @customer_name
Item name: @item_name
Quantity: @qty
IF isnull(@rate, 0) > 0 Rate: @rate
IF isnull(@rate, 0) > 0 Amount: @amount

how can i parse strings like this. I'm open to change format of values for body field.

String Parsing And Expression Builder....

Oct 10, 2007

I can't figure this one out. I don't have enough knowledge of the string functions I guess.

I need to pull a value out of a variable I setup in a for each loop. The value is the filename/path of each source file being processed. Let's say the variable that has the source file path is called VAR1.

One sort of off topic thing I've noticed is when watch the variable in bebug mode and I look at the value of VAR1 it has double back slashes. Here's an example of the value of VAR1:

"\\L3KRZR6.na.xerox.net\C$\Documents and Settings\ca051731\Desktop\Project4\DPT_20070926.ver"

How come the back slashes have been doubled? And do I need to account for that when I start parsing the string value?

Anyway, I need to grab part of the filename from VAR1 and I need the value populated at the start of the for each loop container - ideally when I capture VAR1 in the for each container. I'll be using the string in drop table, create table and create index statements before the actual Data Flow task within the overall package

In the above example I need to grab the characters before the underscore and after the last \. So I'd need the string "DPT" captured in this example.

The actual string could be 1 to 3 characters long, even though this example has it as 3 long.

Underscores could exist anywhere in the actual UNC path once this package is moved to our actual system environments so I can't key off of the underscore.

Because I can't count on the string being a fixed lenght I can't just use a positional string function and grab specific text starting/ending at specific points.

Is there a way to use the various string functions in the expression builder to grab the text between the right most underscore and the right most back slashes or something like that? Ideally I'd like to setup a new expression based packed scope variable called VAR2 and build it using string functions applied to VAR1.

Reading File As One String, Then Parsing - How To Do This?

May 7, 2007

Hi,

The suggestion to do this is buried deep in one of my posts, however I still do not have a clear idea of how to do this.

I have a flat file which has several "bad rows" in it. Because file error redirection is buggy, I need a manual approach to get rid of these incomplete rows in my data file.

Phil, you suggested I read the file as one long string, then parse out the bad rows (using a script?).... however I have no idea as to how to actually do this.

I was wondering if it's possible to clarify the steps involved in doing this, or perhaps point me to an example I can look at, as I cannot seem to get around this problem on my own.

Thanks much!!

How To Insert Several Insert Commands, Triggers?

Jan 22, 2007

Hello, what i want is simple.
This is a simple forum, it has several topics (that the users can create), when a user create a topic, its stored in forum_topics. The user can then view the topic and post a response that is store in forum_answer, the user can also add this to his favorite list, forum_favorites is simple, contains a TopicID that refers to the topic, a username of the user that has the topic on his favorite list and a auto increment id to be able to delete specified topic favorites.
Now my question is: when a user posts a answer to Topic X, i want a predefined message to be sent to post_inbox for all the users that has Topic X in their favorite list.
How can i get MS SQL 2005 to get all the users from Topic X and then loop thru them and insert a new post into post_inbox?

SQL 2012 :: Parsing Out Data String With Text Delimiters

Nov 5, 2014

I'm trying to parse out a line of data that is separated by the text "atc1.", "atc2." etc.

For example,

[atc1.123/atc2.456/atc3.789/atc4.xyz/]

If I only want the data after atc2., then I could search the string for "atc2." and collect all the characters afterwards. But how can I make sure to trim off all the data after "atc3." to make sure I'm only collecting "456" from the example above?

Concurrent Insert And Update Commands

Mar 20, 2006

Hi there,

I've had a look at this thread - http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=104399&SiteID=1 - but it's a bit old so I thought I'd try to clarify a couple of things.

I have a data flow which inserts or updates a table in a SQL 2000 database.

The insert is done via an OLE DB destination and the update is done via an OLE DB Command.

As stated in the previous thread, when these commands run concurrently issues arise with blocking etc.

The only way I've managed to get around it is by setting the access mode of the insert to OpenRowset.

So 2 questions:

1) Does anyone know how this problem occurrs and what the best way to get around it is?

2) Are there issues around NOT using the fast load options - I've read stuff about the double-byte character set etc but I admit I don't quite understand it.

Thanks.

when it does an SQL select inside the program. So for instance, I
do an insert into ORDER values (1, 12, 5.99). (1 = item ID, 12 =
quantity, 5.99 = price). I then do a select * from Order, and I
get those values back. When I open the DB in access, in between
doing the insert and the select, I dont see the values there
either. It is like it is making a temporary copy of the DB in
memory during the execution only. When I close the program and
re-F5, the data is no longer there. Maybe we need some kind of
commit transaction? What am I doing wrong? I am using
VB.Net 2005/MS Access 2003. Here is the relevant code :

Private m_Connection As OleDbConnection

''' <summary>

''' Defines the path to the database.

''' </summary>

''' <remarks></remarks>

#If CONFIG = "Debug" Then

Public Const DB_PATH As String = "DBsDB_Test.mdb"

#ElseIf CONFIG = "Release" Then

Public Const DB_PATH As String = "DBsDB_Production.mdb"

#End If

Sub connect(ByVal p_path As String) Implements IPartyDBase.connect

Dim connect_string As String = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" _

& "Data Source=" & p_path

m_Connection = New OleDbConnection(connect_string)

m_Connection.Open()

End Sub

Sub someSub(ByVal stock As StockClass)

Dim tempString

Dim command As OleDbCommand

command = m_Connection.CreateCommand

command.CommandType = CommandType.Text

tempString = "Insert into Stock VALUES (" & stock.ID & ", "

tempString = tempString & stock.Quantity & ", "

tempString = tempString & stock.Price & ")"

Dim tempInt as Integer

command.CommandText = tempString

tempInt = command.ExecuteNonQuery

If Not tempInt = 1 Then

Throw New Exception("Bad addStockToDB into Stock " & tempInt)

End If

End Sub

Sub anotherSub

p_dbase.connect(PartyDBaseAccess.DB_PATH)

p_dbase.someSub()

p_dbase.close()

End Sub

Edit : During execution, looking under bin/debug/DBs, there is a copy
of the database that has all the transactions I did during execution...
but the actual DB isnt being updated/copied over.

SQL Server 2008 :: Text String Parsing To Apply Operators To Datasets?

Aug 7, 2015

I have a problem at the moment, where the client wants to be able to type in a custom algebraic formula with add/minus operators, and then to have this interpreted, so that the related datasets are then added and returned as a single dataset.

An example would be having a formula stored of [a] + [b] - [c]

and if I were to write the SQL to apply that formula, I might write something like (let's assume 1:1 relationships with the ID's)

select a.a + b.b - c.c as [result]
from z
inner join tblA a on z.id = a.id
inner join tblB b on z.id = b.id
inner join tblC c on z.id = c.id

The formula can change though, maybe things like:

[a] + [b] + [c] + [d]
[a] + [b]

The developer before me wrote something SQL-based where they parsed the string and assigned each value of the formula as either positive or negative (e.g A is positive, B is positive, C is negative, now sum the datasets to get the result), and then created one large table of values then summed them. This does (kind of) work, I'm just contemplating potential alternatives, as it is quite a slow process, and feels like it is quite convoluted, when I get into the details. If I were to do something like this in SQL, I'd normally want each part of the expression to be a column, and then to just apply the operators, but because the formula can change, then the SQL would need to be somehow dynamic for this approach.

Having Trouble Configuring The SqlDataSource Control's Update And Insert Commands

Jul 24, 2007

I've just finished configuring the SELECT command for the SqlDataSource in my ASP.NET 2.0 web app.  It works fine and runs against a SQL Server 2005 database, using a stored procedure that I've written.
So, then I went to configure the SqlDataSource for the UPDATE and INSERT commands, and I've written two SP's for those as well.  In the designer the second form of the wizard asks for the Select statement.  I've already given that for the SELECT statement in the third form, and I also select the INSERT tab to specify the SP I want to use for inserting data and the UPDATE tab to specify the SP I want to use for updating data.  However, there appears to be no way that I can specify what the parameters are supposed to be for anything other than the SELECT command, through the designer.  Is that correct, or have I missed something?

What Is Going On Here? SQL Commands And ODBC Commands Aren't Compatible

Oct 1, 2004

I'm building a simple webform, except Visual Studio and my service provider have combined to drive me nutty.

First, I MUST use an ODBC connection to my remote SQL Server do to some unknown configuartion problem. I've been playing with Visual Studio for only a month, so normally when something goes wrong I can go look in the mirror and find the culprit. This is different. I've got a totally functional web form with a SQL Connection, but when I try to change it to an ODBC Connection, I get the following error.

An OdbcParameter with ParameterName '@CertHolder' is not contained by this OdbcParameterCollection

My coding is fine because I stole it straight from the walkthrough and it works. But the specifications that Visual Studio provide are quite suspect. Please note the failure to include some key "@" signs.

Please Help! I Have Lots Of Questions.

May 6, 2007

In case some of you have read my previous posts, you may be aware that I'm writing a webboard application as a replacement for the old one.The old one currently have approximately 50000 topics in the database, each has on average 10 replies (I just check recently. I though it was only 7000 topics).I need to provide paging and sorting feature to the topic list. But I can't just SELECT all of them and let GridView do the paging/sorting, right?I have been using stored procedures to store my SQL statement for several projects now. I know how to deal with the paging feature (ROW_NUMBER), but the sorting requires me to change to change the "ORDER BY" clause.1. Can somebody tell me how to change the ORDER BY clause in the stored procedure(s) at runtime? Or does anyone have other approach?
Currently I'm thinking about moving back from store procedures to hard-code SQL statements, and then modify/generate the SQL statement for each paging / sorting. But I've learn that stored procedures give more performance and security.2. According to the situation I provided, is it worth moving from stored procedures to hard-code SQL?I'm also using 3-tier architecture approach + OOP. But I reach a conflict in my thoughts. You see, according to OOP, I'm supposed to create classes that reflect the actual objects in the real-world, right? In my case the classes are "Board, Topic, Reply, ...." According to this and 3-tier approach, I intend to use ObjectDataSource as a bridge between Presentation Logic and Business Logic. But I wonder what my datasource class should return3. Should my data source class return data objects like1st approach[DataObject(True)]pubic class TopicDataSource{         public static Topic[] GetTopicList() { }}or should it return DataSet / DataTable / DataReader like2nd approach [DataObject(True)]public class TopicDataSource{          public static DataTable GetTopicList() {}}Personally I think approach 1 is more OOP and allow for more extendability, but approach 2 might be faster.4. If I go with approach 1, how should I control which property of my data objects is read-only after it's has been inserted/created? Can I just set my data object's property to be readonly? Or do I have to set it at page level (i.e. GridView-> Columns -> BoundField -> ReadOnly=True)? Or do I set it and the page level and write a code to throw an exception in the rare case the application / user try to change it's value? Or else?Please help. These questions slow me down for days now.If there's any concepts that I misunderstood, please tell me. I'm aware that I don't know as much as some of you.I will be extremely grateful to anyone who answer any of my questions.Thanks a lot.PS. For those who think my questions are stupid, I'm very, very sorry that I bother you.

Do Lots Of COUNTs

Sep 19, 2006

Hello :)

I seem to have somehow got myself into a situation where I'm having to run the following SELECTs, one after another, on a single ASP page. This is not tidy. How can I join them all together so I get a single recordset returned with all my stats in different columns?

SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tblQuiz WHERE [q3] = '5 years +' OR [q3] = '2 - 4 years'
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tblQuiz WHERE [q4] <> '' AND [q4] IS NOT NULL
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tblQuiz WHERE [q5] = 'Unhappy'
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tblQuiz WHERE [q6] = 'Yes'
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tblQuiz WHERE [q7] = 'Yes'
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tblQuiz WHERE [q8] <> '' AND [q8] IS NOT NULL

Lots Of Queries For My Db

Jul 20, 2005

Hello all,I have a database in SQL Server that should save data from a CRM-likeapplication.The database consists of tables like products, services, customers,partners etc. Problem is that the users should be able to find theseitems on different properties and with or without substring finding(SQL: LIKE). Example: I want the users to be able to find a customer,providing a customerID, but also providing a customername, zipcode orjust a part of those strings.This will result in a lot of queries. I bet there are some nicesolutions to this, since I will not be the first with this situation.If anyone can help, please.Thank you in advance.Regards,Freek Versteijn

Deleting Lots Of Records

May 21, 2004

Apparently, deleting 7,000,000 records from a table of about 20,000,000 is not advisable. We were able to take orders at 8:00AM, but not at 7:59.

So, what's the best way of going about deleting a large number of records? Pretty basic lookup table, no relationships with other tables, 12 or so address-type fields, 4 or 5 simple indexes. I can take it down for a weekend or night, if needed.

DTS the ones to keep to another table, drop the old and rename the new table?
Bulk copy out, truncate and bring back in?
DTS to text, truncate and import back?
Other ways?

Never worked with such a large table and need a little experienced guidance.

Thanks for the help

SQL Performance- Lots Of Little Tables Or One Big One?

May 25, 2004

I am planning an application where ~1000 companies will be accessing data. Should I use a key to identify the company and place all data in one table i.e (WHERE company =123) or should the application create company specific tables i.e should I have 1000 small tables with 100 records in each, or one table with 100,000 records?

Does Sql Server Slow Down If It Has Lots Of Db's?

May 7, 2008

Hi,

You know how there are lots of hosted applications out there, many of them provide you with your own database (not shared).

1. If a server has 1K databases on it, will this slow down the server just due to the # of databases? (each user has their own database, but they won't be accessing it that much really).

A seperate database is required for security purposes usually.

2. Can you still open up EM with 1K+ databases?

Lots Of Transactions, But No Activity

Jan 30, 2007

Hi all,

I have a strange situation. Performance monitor shows that SQLServer:Transactions Transactions value is 125, but SQL Server Profiler does not show any activity.

I ran sp_who2 and I have a bunch of processes with SUSPENDED status. Would those be counted in Performance monitor?

When does a transaction get suspended?

Thanks.

Trying To Restore Having Lots Of Troubles....

Sep 20, 2007

I used MS SQL Server Management Studio Express to back up my SQL Server 2005 database called "PMDB" on a server in my office to a jump drive. Then, I removed the jump drive from the server and plugged it into my laptop. I then tried using MS SQL Server Management Studio Express to restore "PMDB" to my laptop SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (instance "Primavera") to a database called "pmdb$primavera". I've had several issues:

1. pmdb$primavera is now "locked up" "in the middle of a restore". I can't seem to unlock it even by rebooting my laptop.
2. when I execute the restore (I've used several command sequences...) I get a message that there are additional "families" restore is waiting for. I don't understand that.
3. I tried restoring to a completely new database (in the same instance...), but got the "family" problem. The query just hangs forever. When I cancel it, it hangs the database (see #1).
4. I now have two databases in the "Primavera" instance on my laptop in the "restoring" state. I can't get to either one of them.

I'm desperate. I have a customer presentation on Thursday where I must have the database working. Help!

Here's one of the queries I executed.... though I tweaked items here and there for 3 and 4 above.

restore database pmdb

from disk='f:databasebackupPMDB-BAK.BAK'

with recovery,

move 'pmdb_Dat' to 'C:Program FilesMSSQLPrimaveraMSSQL.1MSSQLDATApmdb$primavera_DAT.MDF',

move 'pmdb_log' to 'C:Program FilesMSSQLPrimaveraMSSQL.1MSSQLDATApmdb$primavera_LOG.LDF'

go

The issue seems to be #2 above each time.

SS2005 Log Has Lots Of These Messages.

Every time a transaction log is dumped we see the following message in the log file:
