Can I Manage MSDE With SSMS??
Jul 26, 2007Hello,We have an XP workstation containing a very important MSDE-basedapplication. Its MSDE database isn't likely to change for quite awhile.The app contains an internal backup method (File, Backup, Backup) andan auxiliary app/script for shrinking the database and logs. I wouldlike to automate the backup and shrinking so end users don't have toremember to do them.The workstation has a static IP so it can go out to the Internet whennecessary.The workstation is presently not joined to the domain.1. Can I install SSMS Express *only* as a local app (without SQLExpress 2005) and thus use SSMS to set up nightly backups and periodicshrink database/logs jobs??2. We have SSMS running on SQL 2005 server box in the domain. If Ijoin the workstation only to the domain (local account logon is notchanged, still used), could I use SSMS from the SQL 2005 box?? Say an application is developed with Visual Basic using MSDE and installed on a user PC.
The MSDE databases from time to time will/may need:
a. to be backed up
b. to be restored
c. to be shrunk
d. to be integrity checked
e. to be detached
f. to be attached
g. maybe a few more things
To provide support for these activities, it seems to me like you have the following choices:
a. Build into the VB application
b. Build/use SPs (stored procedures)
c. Use OSQL
d. Use a quasi DBA GUI tool independent of the VB application
Now it seems that building the support into the VB application is not the best choice.
Ditto on having your client use SPs and/or OSQL.
This leaves the quasi DBA GUI tool.
I am not particular keen on reinventing the wheel. Anyone know of any quasi DBA tool(s) which have already been developed? Where to find them? Their cost? Their limitations? etc.?

I'm a newbie with SQL so excuse my igorance. I'm running an application that uses MSDE2000 as its source db and would like to create a small [10 field] db that would also use MSDE. I want to use a separate db though and not share the first one. What I'm looking for is suggestions on a development tool to create the database with as I'm not familiar with SQL tools. I have a lot of Access experience though so the concepts are not new.
Database requirements are pretty basic.
10 fields [8 text, 2 numeric]
A button field to Add New Record
A search field
Column sorting.
That's it. I could do this in a pinch with Access so knowing what tool to use should make it easy. Any chance that I could do it with Access and then port it to a SQL db?

Aug 12, 2015I would like to be able to view the complete SQL command that is sent from a Microsoft Access query which has linked SQL Server tables through ODBC, and the query also has some VBA functions manipulating and filtering data.I tried using the SQL Profiler to view the sql command send to SQL Server but all I see is the simple query format and some of the fields. I don't see the fields that have a VBA function such as trim(fieldname) etc in the column. And If I use a VBA fucntion in the Criteria then nothing shows up in SQL Profiled under the TextData column.How can I see the complete SQL command sent to SQL Server?

I'm not sure if it's the setup I did wrong, but I can't seem to get my
text datatype in my database to store more than 900 characters.
I'm trying to setup a news database for my website, which will populate
the information into a datagrid. To test, I manually added a news
item in the database through the visual studio 2003 gui. I
immediately noticed a problem as the I was getting an error after a
long news item saying:
"The value you entered is not consistent with the data type or length of the column, or over grid buffer limit."
I couldn't find anthing to set the buffer limit and the datatype is
"text" filled with simple text in the column. As a further test,
I
simply entered 12334567890123... up to 900 characters and still
recevied the error.
I would appreciate someone leading me in the right direction on this one.

How Do I Change The Name Of A Computer Running MSDE With Out Reinstalling MSDE
May 27, 2000I am trying to change the computer name of a machine running MSDE but I get an error when SQL Server starts. With regular SQL when I change the name of a computer I re-run setup and setup fixes this problem. MSDE can only be installed from unattended mode so I can’t rerun setup and fix the problem.
My question is "How do I change the name of a computer running MSDE with out reinstalling MSDE"

same name and afterwards the name is changed. So we have the problem that
the checksum key for the MSDE isn't valid anymore. As MSDE can only be installed
from unattended mode so I can’t rerun setup and fix the problem. Does anyone
know a solution for this problem ?? A program recalculating the cheksum ??

The only db development that I have ever done is in MS Access. I have a project at work that is being accomplished in VB and I need a db engine to use as the back end. Visual studio came with a copy of MSDE. Is this tool worth using or should I invest in mySQL? Are there any advantages to using MSDE over mySQL?

i am using a OLE DB Source in my dataflow component and want to select rows from the source based on the Name I enter during execution time. I have created two variables,
enterName - String packageLevel (will store the name I enter)
myVar - String packageLevel. (to store the query)
I am assigning this query to the myVar variable, "Select * from db.Users where (UsrName = " + @[User::enterName] + " )"
Now in the OLE Db source, I have selected as Sql Command from Variable, and I am getting the variable, enterName,. I select that and when I click on OK am getting this error.
Error at Data Flow Task [OLE DB Source [1]]: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E0C.
An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80040E0C Description: "Command text was not set for the command object.".
Can Someone guide me whr am going wrong?

Oct 27, 2006Hey EveryoneI have a desktop machine and a laptop machine. Both have XP Pro. I prefer to code on my laptop, but I want to use my desktop machine as a home server/development environment because its always on. I have IIS (HTTP and FTP), .NET 2.0, my mp3 server, etc up and running just fine on my desktop.When I'm working on an application, I access the site with VWD through a network share. It's worked great so far. What I haven't been able to do, however, is connect to the database with VWD or Management Studio Express. I don't even really know where to begin with this one. What I don't want to do is open this up to the internet. I'd like to just keep it accessible from the LAN (the database, not the website)I'm new to database stuff, and I don't really know where to look to figure out how to do this. Basically, I want to have the same functionality with VWD or Management Studio that I would have if I was physically on the machine with the SQL Express server.If anyone can provide some advice, I'd really appreciate it.Thanks!Brandon

How Do I Manage 100.000 Actions A Day ?
Mar 27, 2008In a previous application i stored about 100.000 actions ( coming from an external system )in an access database for each day. Therefore i created everyday a new accessdatabase to have enough performance. Each month i copied automatically all databases in a new 'month' map as a backup.
The goal of the application is the view all actions of one day of week in one grid. This is a kind of history of the external system.
I'm afraid the application will become to slow if i save all actions in one database. ( after 1 month i will have 3.000.000 actions.
How this is done in an sql server ?
Do i have to use a different kind of method ?

May 24, 2007Say for example I have the following 2 database tables, the first one contains the old employee data, and has the fields shown below:
oldEmployeeID
FirstName
LastName
DateOfBirth
HiringDate
TerminationDate
and another one containing the new employee data with similar fields but instead of oldEmployeeID, it is showing the newEmployeeID.
During the conversion process, something were messed up and instead of putting in the original hiring date of the workers into the new employee database, the conversion date was put in, which, depending on the mood of HR ladies, could be any date, and at the same time, of course, new employee join the company, and we assume their hiring dates were entered correctly. On top of that, there are some employee who were terminated before the conversion took place but we still need to keep a record of that.
And I created a third table, say, emplyeeAll with similar fields to the employee data tables.
So here is what I need to do: if the firstName, lastName and DateOfBirth in the old employee data table and the new employee data table matches, I would assume they are the same employee, hence I would put the information for the employee obtained from the new employee data table to the employeeAll table, with the Hiring Date changed to the Hiring Date of the old employee data table (and do not copy the record from the old employee table to prevent duplicates), otherwise, I would simply copy and paste the data in new and old employee table to my employeeAll table.
I know this is really confusing, but...well...hope you know what I am saying...
Is it possible to have a SQL statement for all these? If so, how should the statement looks like?

Aug 5, 2007I have been having "fun" trying to get all the bits (SSCE 3.5, Orcas Beta 2, SQL Managment Studio) in Vista 64 and Xp 32.
So far I have found at the SQLMetal does work with SSCE 3.5 but not in Vista64
BUT I cannot get any tool (tried SQL and SLQ express) to manage my SSCE db - ie make relationshipos so that SQLMatal can do its stuff
Any advice as to which tool to use to manage SSCE 3.5

I'm currently migrating to Sql 2005 from 2000 and have a quick question about indexes.
In 2000 i used to click on Table > All Tasks > Manage Indexes... to view and create all my table indexes. There doesn't seem to be anything similar in 2005 Management Studio. I thought it was under Table > Modify but there's nothing there for indexes. I've had to create all my indexes manually through t-sql but this doesn't help when needing to view and manage current indexes.
Can anyone help me on this?
