hey everyone.
I'm new too SQL and have been having a little trouble trying to make an invoice report.
I have a database for a fake shop and want to pull out 5 colums of information from two different tables and only display the most recent case(latest date).
The 5 pieces of information i want displayed are called:
Product .ProductNo, Product .Description, Product .UnitPrice, Sale_Line.Qty, Sale_Line.SalePrice
...and saledate is stored in Invoice.SaleDate
My current attempts doesn't work(or even run) but i have included it below:
SELECT Invoice.SaleDate, Product .ProductNo, Product .Description, Product .UnitPrice, Sale_Line.Qty, Sale_Line.SalePrice
FROM Invoice INNER JOIN
Sale_Line ON Invoice.InvoiceNo = Sale_Line.InvoiceNo INNER JOIN
Product ON Sale_Line.ProductNo = Product .ProductNo
(SELECT max(SaleDate) AS maxdate
FROM Invoice) maxresults
WHERE Invoice.SaleDate = maxresults.maxdate;
....Any help with this problem would be much appreciated!
thanks
I am in a dilemma. The scenario is: I have a table with a long stream (1000 bytes non-fixed length)with delimited words. I need to get the words out in a separate table and do it fast. Ideally a cursor is the solution but having added things like User defined functions and Table data types, I was tempted to use these. The master table having about 15 million rows with upto 200 delimited words in each row on an average, the cursor would have taken weeks.
I got very close. I developed the function that will accept a stream of words and return table data that could be inserted into the second table where I wanted it to be. It worked great with a constant string(see the statement below)
select * from FnGetWords('aba ba ba baba ba baba bab ababa')
The only problem is now I need to pass the stream from another table: something like this select * from FnGetWords(stream), Mastertable
I know a functioncan be called in a select statement but what I need to figure out is how I can use that in the From clause or pass the stream to it without using the cursor.
I am rather new to SQL 2005 and I am currently facing a problem when I attempt to sum the income and expenses which requires joining 2 tables. My sql string that is currently having a problem is listed below:
I USED THIS STATEMENT:
SELECT TblIncome.Recieve, SUM(TblIncome.Amount) AS TotalIncome, SUM(TblExpenses.Amount) AS TotalExpenses FROM tblincome, tblexoenses WHERE tblincome.recieve=tblexpenses.paymentto GROUP BY TblIncome.Recieve
AND I ALSO USED THIS STATEMENT:
SELECT TblIncome.Recieve, SUM(TblIncome.Amount) AS TotalIncome, SUM(TblExpenses.Amount) AS TotalExpenses FROM TblIncome INNER JOIN TblExpenses ON TblIncome.Recieve = TblExpenses.paymentTo GROUP BY TblIncome.Recieve
The problem that occurs is it sums and multiplies the number of records in the second table. For example,
TblIncome:
Recieve Amount John 5 John 2 David 1
TblExpenses:
PaymentTo Amount John 3 David 2
Currently, it is showing me as follows:
Recieve TotalIncome TotalExpenses John 7 6 David 1 2
The problem is in total expenses, it multiplies the number of records in TblIncome.
Also, if TblExpenses has more than 1 record, it multiplies the total income with the number of records.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Thanks
I have two tables that contain product SKUs (12-character strings): Table 1Product IdSKU... Table 2ProductVariantIdSKU... I need to find the MAX (i.e., last used) SKU that exists in either table. I did write two sps, one for each table that I can compare in code and use the larger (latest) one but I am not that facile with JOINS, etc., so I can't figure how how to create a single sp to return the value I am looking for--although I assume this must not only be possible but trivial to more experienced SQLers. Thanks! Duncan
I have data like this in a two column temporary table -ID Age23586 323586 323586 223586 223586 123586 123586 123586 123586 1I need to create a temporary table that look like this:ID Age1 Age2 Age3 Age423586 5 2 2 0However, what I get is this:23586 5 NULL NULL NULL23586 NULL 2 NULL NULL23586 NULL NULL 2 NULLHere is the query that I am using...select managed_object_id, (select count(Age) where Age = 1) As Age1,(select count(Age) where Age = 2) as Age2,(select count(Age) where Age = 3) as Age3,(select count(Age) where Age = 4) as Age4into #enhancementCount from #enhancementsgroup by managed_object_id, AgeWhere's my mistake?Thanks-Danielle
A have a number of similar tables and what I want to do is to get the count of records grouped by day of week. All tables have date as an indexed unique column but the actual timestamps differs and have no relation. For one table I use this simple querry:
Select DatePart(dw,dato) AS DOW, Count(dato) AS NOR FROM AWP2 where dato > '2006-08-11' Group By DatePart(dw,dato)
Trying to join two or more tables in all sorts of variants of this:
Select datePart(dw,a1.dato) AS DOW1,Count(a1.dato) [Amount 1], datePart(dw,a2.dato) AS DOW2, Count(a2.dato) [Amount 2] FROM AWP1 A1 Inner Join AWP2 A2 on datePart(dw,a1.dato) = datePart(dw,a2.dato) Where a1.dato > '2006-08-11' AND a2.dato > '2006-08-11' Group By datePart(dw,a1.dato), datePart(dw,a2.dato)
Create view vwOrderItemTotal2 AS SELECT ItemName, fkMenuItemID, Sum(Quantity) as [SumOfMenuITems] FROM OrderItems GROUP BY fkMenuItemId, ItemName
When I present my data in a GridView, it works fine. For example, several orders for milk are returned as a summary quantity of 26 gallons in a single row of the GridView like this:
26 Milk
Now I need to filter my data by OrderDate and Zipcode. I created this new view:
Create view vwOrderItemTotal5 AS SELECT Orders.Zipcode, Orders.OrderDate, OrderItems.ItemName, OrderItems.fkMenuItemID, Sum(Quantity) as [SumOfMenuITems] FROM Orders INNER JOIN OrderItems ON Orders.OrderID = OrderItems.fkOrderID GROUP BY fkMenuItemId, ItemName, Zipcode, OrderDate
When I present my data in a Gridview using the new view I get a GridView with multiple rows for milk where each order has its own row like this:
1 Milk 5 Milk 6 Milk 6 Milk 3 Milk 1 Milk 4 Milk
But I want the data presentation in one row for each ItemName (e.g. Milk) as with my first view. Can I adjust my new view to achieve this, or should I stick with my first view (vwOrderItemTotal2) and adjust the Select Command in my SqlDataSource (hasn’t worked yet). I think that what I want is for the returned data to be grouped by fkMenuItemId only, but the sql server admin won’t let me create a view without including the other fields in the Group By clause. Thanks for any help provided in solving this.
This is so complicated (for me) because I usually only work with single table and simple queries (SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE), but now I am in a situation where I am stuck.
What I am trying to archive is that: when a project manager logged-into his/her account, a grid-view will show a quick overview for all of his/her projects (id, created date, name and how many files are in pending) like below picture:
3 tables will be involved are:
Sample data for manager_id = 11
I tried this query but it not worked, it seems to display all columns right but the COUNT pending files column (assume the manager_id = 11)
SELECT COUNT(file_id) as 'Pending files', projects.project_id, projects.project_name, projects.status, projects.start_date FROM ((project_manager INNER JOIN files ON project_manager.mag_id = files.manager_id AND project_manager.mag_id = 11 AND file_status = 'Pending') INNER JOIN projects ON projects.project_id = project_manager.project_id) GROUP BY projects.project_id, projects.project_name, projects.status, projects.start_date ORDER BY projects.status, projects.start_date DESC
Hiya,Is there really no way to use temporary tables from within a UDF? Ilike UDFs because I can use them like a table -- e.g., SELECT row1,row2 from MyFunc('abc')
I used a function to create dataset as below: Public Function GetSQLDataSet(ByVal SQL As String) As DataSet ...... MyConnection = New SqlConnection(MyConnectionString) MyCommand = New SqlCommand(SQL, MyConnection) MyDataSet = New DataSet MySQLDataAdapter = New SqlDataAdapter(MyCommand) MySQLDataAdapter.Fill(MyDataSet) ...... End function It works fine. How to code a function to return a dataset in which there are two tables and relationship?
Hi,I m searching for some Script / Function ... to find difference in datab/w 2 similar tables (exactly same fields structure) in sql 2000.plz update me asap !thanks in advance !
I have these 3 tables in a database for printed chamber music works:
Table INSTRUMENTS: List of musical instruments   Column ID      -- int, primary key   Column sInstrument -- string
Table PTRS_INSTRUMENTATION:   Column ID      -- int, primary key   Column lInstrument -- int, points to a row in table INSTRUMENTS via ID   Column lMainItem  -- int, points to a row in table MAINITEMS via ID   Column lInstrSeqNum -- int, sequential number of like instruments within one Main Item    Table MAINITEMS: List of chamber music works   Column ID      -- int, primary key   Column sItem    -- string    Each chamber music work (Main Item) requires an ensemble of musicians playing several instruments. Some of them may be the same, such as 2 violins. A classical quartet, for instance, consist of 2 violins, 1 viola and 1 cello. I am concerned here only with one of the instruments (although it may occur several times).
I want to extract a list of Main Items where the instrument is given (e.g., 'violin'),
And the maximum of PTRS_INSTRUMENTATION.lInstrSeqNum is a given number (e.g., 2).
When I am executing a query that uses a mathematical function on values from 2 tables the query takes much longer than the same query that uses values from 1 table, even though the join remains the same.
Why is this happening? Is there a way to bypass this problem?
Long query ( values from 2 tables ) : SELECT MAX ( ( SIGN ( attribute.keyValue- ( -2027587559 ) ) *SIGN ( attribute.keyValue- ( -2027587559 ) ) -1 ) *-1*data.val ) AS maxVal FROM DATA data, ATTR attribute, TREE_ELEMENT elm, TREE_ELEMENT subject WHERE data.elmId=elm.id AND attribute.keyValue IN ( 345647222,1569153803,1569146115,-2027587559 ) AND subject.id=elm.subjectId AND subject.name = ‘test’
Short query ( values from 1 table ) : SELECT MAX ( ( SIGN ( data.keyValue- ( -2027587559 ) ) *SIGN ( data.keyValue- ( -2027587559 ) ) -1 ) *-1*data.val ) AS maxVal FROM DATA data, ATTR attribute, TREE_ELEMENT elm, TREE_ELEMENT subject WHERE data.elmId=elm.id AND attribute.keyValue IN ( 345647222,1569153803,1569146115,-2027587559 ) AND subject.id=elm.subjectId AND subject.name = ‘test’

View or function 'MutualFund' is not updatable because the modification affects multiple base tables.
I get the above error when i try to delete rows from a view. i tried the following code with a table. it works perfectly. i want the same behaviour for a view. can anyone help.
Delete MutualFund from MutualFund inner join MutualFund_history on MutualFund.SecurityID= MutualFund_history.SecurityIDwhere MutualFund.MorningstarCategoryID=MutualFund_history.MorningstarCategoryID and MutualFund.MorningstarAssetClassID= MutualFund_history.MorningstarAssetClassID and MutualFund_history.insertdt =(Select MAX(DsegLastUpdated) from Timestamp_History(nolock))
"MutualFund" is a view. if it were a table, the above works well. but how can i simulate the same effect for a view. any help will be greatly appreciated.
I would like to wrap the following code in a function and reuse it. Â I use this code in many triggers.
DECLARE @Action as char(1); SET @Action = (CASE WHEN EXISTS(SELECT * FROM INSERTED) AND EXISTS(SELECT * FROM DELETED) THEN 'U' Â -- Set Action to Updated. WHEN EXISTS(SELECT * FROM INSERTED) THEN 'I' Â -- Set Action to Insert. WHEN EXISTS(SELECT * FROM DELETED) THEN 'D' Â -- Set Action to Deleted. ELSE NULL -- Skip. It may have been a "failed delete". Â Â END)
Is it possible to write a function and pass the INSERTED and DELETED logical tables to it?
I have this function in access I need to be able to use in ms sql. Having problems trying to get it to work. The function gets rid of the leading zeros if the field being past dosn't have any non number characters. For example:TrimZero("000000001023") > "1023"TrimZero("E1025") > "E1025"TrimZero("000000021021") > "21021"TrimZero("R5545") > "R5545"Here is the function that works in access:Public Function TrimZero(strField As Variant) As String Dim strReturn As String If IsNull(strField) = True Then strReturn = "" Else strReturn = strField Do While Left(strReturn, 1) = "0" strReturn = Mid(strReturn, 2) Loop End If TrimZero = strReturnEnd Function
I need to be able to pass the output of a function to another function as input, where all functions involved are user-defined in-line table-valued functions. I already posted this on Stack Exchange, so here is a link to the relevant code: [URL] ...
I am fairly certain OUTER APPLY is the core answer here; there's *clearly* some way in which does *not* do what I need, or I would not get the null output you see in the link, but it seems clear that there should be a way to fool it into working.
I'm new to my company, although not new to SQL 2005 and I found something interesting. I don't have an ERD yet, and so I was asking a co-worker what table some data was in, they told me a table that is NOT in SQL Server 2005's list of tables, views or synonyms.
I thought that was strange, and so I searched over and over again and still I couldn't find it. Then I did a select statement the table that Access thinks exists and SQL Server does not show and to my shock, the select statement pulled in data!
So how did this happen? How can I find the object in SSMS folder listing of tables/views or whatever and what am I overlooking?
Can anybody know ,how can we add builtin functions(ROW_NUMBER()) of Sql Server 2005 into database library. I get this error when i used into storeprocedure : ROW_NUMBER() function is not recognized in store procedure. i used MS SQL SERVER 2005 , so i think "ROW_FUNCTION()" is not in MS SQL SERVER 2005 database library. I need to add that function into MS SQL SERVER 2005 database library. Can anbody know how we can add that function into MS SQL SERVER 2005 database library?
I want to write function to call another function which name isparameter to first function. Other parameters should be passed tocalled function. If I call it function('f1',10) it should call f1(10). If I call itfunction('f2',5) it should call f2(5).So far i tried something likeCREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[func] (@f varchar(50),@m money)RETURNS varchar(50) ASBEGINreturn(select 'dbo.'+@f+'('+convert(varchar(50),@m)+')')ENDWhen I call it select dbo.formuła('f_test',1000) it returns'select f_test(1000)', but not value of f_test(1000).What's wrong?Mariusz
We have 20 -30 normalized tables in our dartabase . Also we have 4tables where we store the calculated data fron those normalised tables. The Reason we have these 4 denormalised tables is when we try to dothe calcultion on the fly, our site becomes very slow. So We haveprecalculated and stored it in 4 tables. The Process we use to do the precalcultion, will get do thecalculation and and store it in a temp table. It will compare the thetemp with denormalised tables and insert new rows , delte the old oneans update if any changes. This process take about 20 mins - 60mins. Ittakes long time because in this process we first do the calculationregardless of changes and then do a compare to see what are changed andremove if any rows are deleted, and insert new rowsand update thechanges. Now we like to capture the rows/columns changed in the normalisedtables and do only those chages to the denormalised table , which weare hoping will reduce the processing time by atleast 50%WE have upgraded to SQL SERVER 2005.So We like to use the newtechnology for this process.I have to design the a model to capture the changes and updated onlythose changes.I have the list of normalised tables and te columns which will affectthe end results.I thought of using Triggers or OUTPUT clause to capture the changes. Please help me with the any ideas how to design the new process
Ok, I'm pretty knowledgable about T-SQL, but I've hit something that seems should work, but just doesn't... I'm writing a stored procedure that needs to use the primary key fields of a table that is being passed to me so that I can generate what will most likely be a dynamically generated SQL statement and then execute it. So the first thing I do, is I need to grab the primary key fields of the table. I'd rather not go down to the base system tables since we may (hopefully) upgrade this one SQL 2000 machine to 2005 fairly soon, so I poke around, and find sp_pkeys in the master table. Great. I pass in the table name, and sure enough, it comes back with a record set, 1 row per column. That's exactly what I need. Umm... This is the part where I'm at a loss. The stored procedure outputs the resultset as a resultset (Not as an output param). Now I want to use that list in my stored procedure, thinking that if the base tables change, Microsoft will change the stored procedure accordingly, so even after a version upgrade my stuff SHOULD still work. But... How do I use the resultset from the stored procedure? You can't reference it like a table-valued function, nor can you 'capture' the resultset for use using the syntax like: DECLARE @table table@table=EXEC sp_pkeys MyTable That of course just returns you the RETURN_VALUE instead of the resultset it output. Ugh. Ok, so I finally decide to just bite the bullet, and I grab the code from sp_pkeys and make my own little function called fn_pkeys. Since I might also want to be able to 'force' the primary keys (Maybe the table doesn't really have one, but logically it does), I decide it'll pass back a comma-delimited varchar of columns that make up the primary key. Ok, I test it and it works great. Now, I'm happily going along and building my routine, and realize, hey, I don't really want that in a comma-delimited varchar, I want to use it in one of my queries, and I have this nice little table-valued function I call split, that takes a comma-delimited varchar, and returns a table... So I preceed to try it out... SELECT *FROM Split(fn_pkeys('MyTable'),DEFAULT) Syntax Error. Ugh. Eventually, I even try: SELECT *FROM Split(substring('abc,def',2,6),DEFAULT) Syntax Error. Hmm...What am I doing wrong here, or can't you use a scalar-valued function as a parameter into a table-valued function? SELECT *FROM Split('bc,def',DEFAULT) works just fine. So my questions are: Is there any way to programmatically capture a resultset that is being output from a stored procedure for use in the stored procedure that called it? Is there any way to pass a scalar-valued function as a parameter into a table-valued function? Oh, this works as well as a work around, but I'm more interested in if there is a way without having to workaround: DECLARE @tmp varchar(8000) SET @tmp=(SELECT dbo.fn_pkeys('MyTable')) SELECT * FROM Split(@tmp,DEFAULT)
Yesterday Peso was gracious enough to help me with creating function/views/sp's
I took those examples and extended what had from excel into function in SQL
however I see myself repeating certain parts of the query and i'm wondering if there is a way to call a function (in part or in whole) from another function?
Here are excerpts two functions I have:
We'll call this function UserUsage() ------------------------------------ RETURN( SELECT ut.LastName, ut.FirstName, CEILING(Sum(hu.session_time)/ 60000) AS [Time Spent(MIN)], Max(hu.time_stamp) AS [Last Log Date], pct.Title, cat.topic_name FROM ZSRIVENDEL.dbo.UserTable ut, ZSRIVENDEL.dbo.history_usage hu, ZSRIVENDEL.dbo.pc_CourseTitles pct, ZSRIVENDEL.dbo.cam_topics cat WHERE ut.student_id = hu.student_id AND hu.course_id = pct.CourseID AND hu.topic_id = cat.topic_id AND ((ut.ClientID=@ClientID) AND (pct.ClientID=@ClientID) AND (ut.GroupID=3400) AND (hu.time_stamp>= @StartDate And hu.time_stamp< @EndDate) AND (hu.session_time<21600000)) GROUP BY ut.LastName, ut.FirstName, pct.Title, cat.topic_name )
and will call this function UserSummary(): ----------------------------------------- RETURN ( SELECTut.LastName, ut.FirstName, CEILING(SUM(hu.Session_Time) / 60000.0) AS [Time Spent(MIN)] FROM ZSRIVENDEL.dbo.UserTable AS ut INNER JOIN ZSRIVENDEL.dbo.History_Usage AS hu ON hu.Student_ID = ut.Student_ID WHERE ut.ClientID = @ClientID AND ut.GroupID = 3400 AND hu.Time_Stamp >= @StartDate AND hu.Time_Stamp < @EndDate AND hu.Session_Time < 21600000 GROUP BY ut.LastName, ut.FirstName )
As you can see the first part of the both query are simlar. In particular the:
SELECTut.LastName, ut.FirstName, CEILING(SUM(hu.Session_Time) / 60000.0) AS [Time Spent(MIN)]
and also the variables @StartDate and @EndDate.
In C# it would create a method and just call that method as well as the variables. However i'm not sure how to do that with sql functions. Could someone shed some light please?
Hi,I have written a stored proc with some temporary tables and also useda getdate() in my stored proc. I am using the following select statement to get the row count from SQL linked server table.
SELECT Count(*) FROM OPENQUERY (CMSPROD, 'Select * From MHDLIB.MHSERV0P')
MHDLIB is the library name in IBM DB2 database. The above query gives me only the row count of table MHSERV0P. However, I need to get the names, rowcounts, and sizes of all tables that exist in MHDLIB librray. Is it possible at all?
