Jun 15, 2006

I installed sql 2005 a while back. Then I recently found out my file system was fat32 (I don't understand why the hardware people did this...) and I had to convert to NTFS. Naturally the sql service no longer worked so I uninstalled inorder to reinstall now I can't reinstall it I keep getting this message

I'll try to post the full log in a new post.

I am unable to handle - How to send variable number of parameters from Visual Stduio to Sql - Server ? My requirement is to use the SQL-Stored Procedure to store all the rows in the base table and related tables and then update one another table based on the updations done. Please Help .....

Row Size Limitations Of SQL Server 2005

Aug 13, 2007

I've created a database design and I'm trying to figure out if it's workable or not. I have 2 tables in particular that are sparse (20 columns, but only a few have data - about 100 bytes/row) but will grow very large - to the tune of 700 million rows.

My question is whether or not there is a problem with SQL Server 2005 having 1.5+ billion rows of data even though it will likely only take up 100 gigs or so on disk. Anyone have experience in large numbers of rows like this? We're still doing testing as far determining how slow queries will get.

Thanks,
Craig

Sql Server 2005 Vs Express Size Limits

Feb 28, 2006

I've been developing a vb app with sql server 2005 and had planned to use express as the client server so the db could be distributed with the app. After importing 21 csv text files, I realized that I have way too much data. My understanding is that sqlexpress can only work with max 4gb database.

The 21 csv files (total 925mb) brought the db size up to 1.5gb and I still have at least 250 more files to go. Obviously, I need a different approach. What are the size limitations of the non express version of sql server 2005? Any suggestions on the best approach for this type of situation?

Report Server 2005 DB Doubled In Size (dbo.ServerParametersInstance)

Apr 8, 2008

Our Report Server DB almost doubled in size over the period of a week and is causing backup issues and using too much disk space.

We have over a hundred SQL 2005 DBs running in a portal on the same server as the Report Server all connecting to SSRS and many run their own Report Builder models and custom reports.

The table dbo.ServerParametersInstance is currently 3.6gb. I'm struggling to find any help in how to manage this in terms of reducing its size or what it is even used for.

Any help would me much appreciated.

Thanks

Error While Storing A Zip File With Size More Than 1MB In MS SQL Server 2005 Express

Aug 9, 2007

I want to store a Zip file as a BLOB, but I get an error:
"File 'C:<path of mdf file> ' appears to have been truncated by the operating system. Expected size is 2560KB but actual size is 1536KB "
whenever the BLOB exceeds 1MB.

Any suggestions? How can I store larger .ZIP files to the Database?
I am using MS SQL 2005 Express and the data type that I gave for the column to store Blob is "varbinary(MAX)".

I am inserting byte array in to this field.
It works fine for a zip file less than 1MB but as soon as the zipped file size increases beyond 1MB, lots of error pop-up and then the database is not readable. Its says that, the data in the data base may have been corrupted...

Limit On SSIS String Variable Size, Trying To Get Big Xml File Into Xml Data Field

Putting the data into a ssis string causes an error. The length of the string variable is 58,231,886. The file will only get bigger.

How else can I get this data into a SQL Server XML field.

Update Statement Using Declared Variable Produces Unexpected Results On SQL Server 2005

Aug 7, 2007

We are getting unexpected results from the following update statement when it is executed on SQL Server 2005.

The strange thing is that we get duplicated values for QM_UID (although when run under SQL Server 2000 we don't get duplicated values)

Can anyone explain why this happens or suggest another way of populating this column without using a cursor or adding a temporary autoincrement column and copying the values over?

declare @NextID int;

set @NextID = 1;

update tmp set QM_UID=@NextID, @NextID = @NextID + 1;

Sql 2005 Transaction Log Size

Aug 9, 2006

We have a database that is backed up every night (full backup). The database size is around 5GB and the transaciton log is about 3GB. And it's 3GB after the backup too. I thought the log size should shrink after each full backup. I can't imagine what data the log needs to maintain after a full backup is complete.

What can be done about this large transaction log?

DB Size Increase From SQL 2000 To 2005

Feb 23, 2008

A few months ago a customer moved from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. The db wasbacked up on SQL 2000 and restored to SQL 2005. The application using thisdata works on SQL 2005 but takes no advantage of new features. The db onSQL 2000 was about 2.9GB, now on SQL 2005, it is 16.5GB. The db is set toSimple recovery so trx log is only 2mb. The mdf file is 16.5GB, ManagementStudio shows only 5mb free space. There has not been a huge increase intransactions. One of the largest tables has only added 2,000 rows since the move to SQL2005. Yet the data and index size has jumped from about 400mb to 3.5 GB. Iused the 'BigTables.sql' script found at various SQL sites:www.databasejournal.com/img/BigTables.sqlAny ideas why such a large increase? Thanks

SQL CE 3.0 (Mobile 2005) Max DB Size Question

Jan 26, 2007

Hi everyone,
What are the consequences for just setting the Max DB Size to 4GB and letting it go at that?
Is the MAX Size any arbitrary value I want or must it be close to what the actual database is expected to be?
Also, why did they default to 128MB? Wouldn't it have been better to set it to a larger value?
Thanks

Maximum SQL 2005 Database Size

Sep 19, 2007

Hello! I'm trying to figure out what the ultimate size limitation for a SQL 2005 Enterprise server is. This document is helpful but I'm a bit confused:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143432.aspx

In the document, it says that the maximum database size is 524,258 terabytes; however, it also says that the maximum data file size--which I assume is the .MDF file--is 16 terabytes. My question is, how can you create a 524,258 TB database if the maximum file size 16 TB?

Dumb question, I'm sure...please enlighten me!

Printing SQL 2005 Reports In A4 Size Format

Feb 13, 2008

Hi,

I had developed my reports using SQL 2005 reporting service. While crerating the report i set the page size to 8.27in Width x 11.69in Height.
I am calling this report in my aspx pages using report viewer.

But the problem is I can't able to set the size of the page to A4 size. When i set the size of the page to A4 while printing the page is divided into two pages.

Is there any way to override the print option in reportviewer where we can set the page size to A4 ?

Thanks and Regards,

Exceeding SQL 2005 Express' 4GB Databse Size Limit...

Sep 5, 2006

Okay, I know the maximum size limit on a database in SQL 2005 Express is 4GB, but what happens when you exceed that limit? I can't seem to find much info on that topic. What kind of error return would you get from a stored procedure attempting to do an insert that will exceed the 4GB limitation? Also what factors go into that maximum size, factors that might not be completely obvious of course?

Why Is SQL 2005 Giving A Msg 511, Exceeded Max Row Size Of 8060 Error?

Jun 24, 2007

A simple alter statement to populate a column is giving the error below.
UPDATE AM_PROFILE_4101_0 SET _92284 = CONVERT(varchar(1000),fv.varcharValue)
FROM AM_PROFILE_4101_0 pt
INNER JOIN cyfield_value fv ON fv.fieldID = 92284 AND pt.AM_PROFILE_ID = fv.AMid

Cannot create a row of size 8125 which is greater than the allowable maximum of 8060.
The table as many varchar(max) columns such as _92284, and many are populated with around 1000 bytes of data. Everything I'm reading tells me SQL 2005 supports large row sizes. But why is this error still coming up.

Other usage info: These numbered columns (i.e. _92284) are dropped, added, and repopulated with data every night.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you!

SQL 2005 SSIS Error - Packet Size Issue

Jan 18, 2008

Hi All...Thanks in advance for any help...

I am having an issue with SQL 2005 SSIS package...Win 2003 SP2...SQL 2005...

We receive files in the format of .TRK into an input directory...These files then are copied to a local directory on server and a .bat file loops through renaming each .TRK to MyFile.Txt...MyFile.Txt is then uploaded to a SQL table via DTS...Nothing complicated...The DTS runs fine when MyFile.Txt is placed there manually and executed...The rub is the call through batch file...

Here's the bat file...

ECHO ON

CD D:DOF

SET FromDir=D:DOFftp_in

SET ToDir=D:DOFconfirm

SET RemoteRoot=\MEMSRV079D$DOFGensrvnt

REM get files from remote server

MOVE %RemoteRoot%DOFOut*.trk D:DOFFTP_In

CD D:DOFFTP_In

FOR %%F IN (*.*) DO (

SET File=%%F

COPY %FromDir%%%F %ToDir%%%F

RENAME %%F MyFile.txt

DTSRUN /S MEMSRV079 /E /R /N "DOF_SAP_Confirm" > D:DOFLOGDOF_SAP_Confirm.run

DEL %FromDir%MyFile.txt

)

CD D:DOF

Works fine on Win2000 / SQL2000 environment but DTS had to be in MetaData, not normal...

All the copy, renames, etc in batch file work correctly...

Here's the error from DTS log...ie...The .run from above...

DTSRun: Loading...

Error: -2147217355 (80041035); Provider Error: 0 (0)

Error string: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Packet size change not honored by server, server size used

Error source:

Help file:

Help context: 0

Here's my trouble shooting...Reinstall SP2 on Windows to get MDAC 2.8 version...MS KB article states that the ODBC registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREODBCINST.INISQLServerDriverODBCVer should be 3.7 or greater...It's 3.5 on this server...MDAC 2.8 (which is installed with Win2003 SP2) is supposed to take care of installing right driver...All registry keys point to the proper version of sqlsvr32.dll in .WindowsSystem32...

I'm at a loss...Currently we are looking at rewriting the bat file in C# or something similar...I would really like to get running as is...

Thanks in advance...

SQL 2005 Mobile Merge Replication Size Limits?

Feb 8, 2006

I am in the process of testing a SQL 2005 Std x64 server with merge replication using Windows Mobile 5.0 clients and SQL 2005 Mobile. The test DB is a copy of the currently active DB, but has been expanded to include some new tables to support planned application functionality extensions.

Once the publication exceeds 97 Articles, the error is thrown that "The buffer pool is too small or there are too many open cursors". If I drop one article everything is fine. I ran a test with dummy DB that had 100 blank tables, and this initialized just fine on the client. The additional articles I am publishing (the 98th table) is also empty, but it throws the error anyway.

Is there a limit on the total size/number of changes that can be sent? Since I have run tests sending over 64,000 changes to a client during initialization this does not seem to be the case (I am only attempting a little more than 9,700 changes on this initialization).

Some other ideas that have been tested without success are to stop the user triggers from propagating, and toggling the AWE setting for SQL. The Replication Monitor does say the client completes replication, and it seems to choke at the very end of completing replication when it attempts to write to the tracking tables. The last successful action is sys.sp_MSadd_merge_history90, and it appears to be acting on the last table added to the publication.

There does not appear to be a limit on the number or articles, since I can publish more articles in a dummy DB than I am able here, so it seems to be something to do with size. Any information would be helpful, this is a very frustrating issue. Thanks!

ok, I am on Day 2 of being brain dead.I have a database with a table with 2 varchar(25) columns I have a btton click event that gets the value of the userName,  and a text box.I NEED to insert a new row in a sql database, with the 2 variables.Ive used a sqldatasource object, and tried to midify the insert parameters, tried to set it at the button click event, and NOTHING is working. Anyone have a good source for sql 101/ASP.Net/Braindead where I can find this out, or better yet, give me an example.  this is what I got <%@ Page Language="C#" %><!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"><script runat="server">     protected void runit_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)    {       //SqlDataSource ID = "InsertExtraInfo".Insert();      //SqlDataSource1.Insert();    }      protected void Button1_Click1(object sender, EventArgs e)    {        SqlDataSource newsql;                newsql.InsertParameters.Add("@name", "Dan");        newsql.InsertParameters.Add("@color", "rose");        String t_c = "purple";        string tempname = Page.User.Identity.Name;        Label1.Text = tempname;        Label2.Text = t_c;        newsql.Insert();    }</script><html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" ><head runat="server">    <title>mini update</title></head><body>    <form id="form1" runat="server">        &nbsp;name<asp:TextBox ID="name" runat="server" OnTextChanged="TextBox2_TextChanged"></asp:TextBox><br />        color        <asp:TextBox ID="color" runat="server"></asp:TextBox><br />        <br />        <asp:Button ID="Button1" runat="server" OnClick="Button1_Click1" Text="Button" />        &nbsp;<br />        set lable =&gt;<asp:Label ID="Label1" runat="server" Text="Label" Width="135px" Visible="False"></asp:Label><br />        Lable 2 =&gt;        <asp:Label ID="Label2" runat="server" Text="Label"></asp:Label><br />        Usernmae=&gt;<asp:LoginName ID="LoginName1" runat="server" />        <br />        <br />        <br />        <br />        <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConflictDetection="CompareAllValues"            ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:newstring %>" DeleteCommand="DELETE FROM [favcolor] WHERE [name] = @original_name AND [color] = @original_color"            InsertCommand="INSERT INTO [favcolor] ([name], [color]) VALUES (@name, @color)"            OldValuesParameterFormatString="original_{0}" SelectCommand="SELECT [name], [color] FROM [favcolor]"            UpdateCommand="UPDATE [favcolor] SET [color] = @color WHERE [name] = @original_name AND [color] = @original_color">            <DeleteParameters>                <asp:Parameter Name="original_name" Type="String" />                <asp:Parameter Name="original_color" Type="String" />            </DeleteParameters>            <UpdateParameters>                <asp:Parameter Name="color" Type="String" />                <asp:Parameter Name="original_name" Type="String" />                <asp:Parameter Name="original_color" Type="String" />            </UpdateParameters>            <InsertParameters>        <asp:InsertParameter("@name", "Dan", Type="String" />        <asp:InsertParameter("@color", "rose") Type="String"/>                                       </InsertParameters>        </asp:SqlDataSource>        &nbsp;        <asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" AllowPaging="True" AllowSorting="True"            AutoGenerateColumns="False" DataKeyNames="name" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1">            <Columns>                <asp:CommandField ShowDeleteButton="True" ShowEditButton="True" ShowSelectButton="True" />                                <asp:BoundField DataField="color" HeaderText="color" SortExpression="color" />                <asp:BoundField DataField="name" HeaderText="name" ReadOnly="True" SortExpression="name" />            </Columns>        </asp:GridView>           </form></body></html>

Bloated File Size - Export To Excel In SSRS 2005

Mar 22, 2007

Hi

When I export a report to XLS, I get a huge file size, and performance really takes a hit.

When I copy the Excel Data, and Paste Special - Values into a new excel, the file size shrinks considerably again.

When I export to CSV instead, the file size is halved, and the processing time comes down from 5-6 mins to 10 seconds.

I use SQl 2005 with SP2, so some of the old problems with RS2000 do not apply.

I suspect SSRS uses XML to export to excel. Is there some way I can get over this problem?

TIA

Kar

Should SQL 2005's BPool Reservation Size Vary With -g Startup Parameter?

Oct 17, 2007

Hello, all

We are trying to work out a memory problem associated with a SQLCLR procedure we have developed.

This procedure will run properly on a SQLExpress box, but fails with an Insufficient Memory error (701) when run on our 32-bit enterprise edition server on W2K3 Enterprise Server. The server has 3.25 GB of RAM, and does *not* have the /3GB switch enabled; AWE is *not* enabled on SQL Server.

I initially suspected the problem was due to the idiosyncracies of how the BPool is allocated on SqlExpress and its 1GB buffer pool limitation, giving a 1GB MemToLeave region for SQLCLR allocations -- substantially larger than the default available on the server with it's default 256MB allocation (+128MB for thread stacks). That seemed to explain why a memory problem might not manifest itself on the client, but would on the server. I then altered the server to include an explicit "-g" parameter at startup, reserving 512MB for MemToLeave, but the query still fails with the same memory errors. I've tried values as high as 1GB (-g1024), but none have worked Our DBA has installed a recent hotfix associated with certain memory errors, to no avail.

It appears that the server will max out the CLR allocations at 102MB, regardless of the presence of the -g parameter. Could it be that the MemToLeave region really is that severely fragmented? There are still log messages indicating failures to reserve virtual memory...

One thing I notice is that the buffer's VM Reserved value never seems to change regardless of the value of the "-g" option. I would expect to see it decrease by the amount specified as reserved, eg -g 768 should leave, for example, something like 1.2GB VM Reserved for buffer pool allocation, but it doesn't. That tells me I'm not really establishing a larger MemToLeave area. Is this expectation incorrect?

Bottom line, we don't know why this procedure is running on the server, but not in SqlExpress. It is a procedure that connects to a remote Oracle database and collects about 14,000 records, but dies after sending about 7,000 or so records when run on the server. Again, the same query running against the same code on a SqlExpress box works perfectly.

Any thoughts or suggestions welcomed and greatly appreciated.
